SWORDS SWORDS SWORDS.......2007-01-10

THIS BOOK WAS BOUGHT FOR MY SON WHO IS VERY INTO SWORDS. HE LOVED THEM.

A Basic Overview.......2001-02-12

This book lays out the basics on knightly weaponry, accompanied by very good sketches showing the differences between the various weapons. While the text is simple and obviously written with a young audience in mind, it's actually a lot more detailed than it seems. The processes involved in making scabbards, hilts and inlays are all explained in the "Swords and Knives" section, which is about half of the book. The evolution of various weapons is also covered, although not quite in as much detail as I would have liked. Overall this is a good starting point for research on the subject. Note, however, that armour is not described at all, except to note how armour interacts with the various weapons. I know the writer has other books in this series, on the subject of armour, horses, and knightly battle. Those are probably worth checking out as well.

A Pretty Good Overview.......1999-10-12

This book defines its goals clearly and does a good job reaching them. Most of the nomenclature is defined in a glossary in the back which makes it a good book for beginners.

I would rate it as especially good for, say, a 10 to 14 year old, just starting the subject, as it is easy to read, brief and to-the-point.

An informative and compelling book.......1999-08-30

The Knight and His Weapons is a solid, if brief look at a knight's armaments in the twelve to fifteen hundred (though, earlier weapons are paid less mind). The introductory fiction was nicely done, and tied in well with the rest of the book, which is broken into several sections, each dealing with a particular type of weapon:

The sword and knife section was initially somewhat mundane, but Oakeshott spends a good deal of time on the construction of the sword, which isn't something I've seen elsewhere in as much detail.

The last section deals with early firearms, and while interesting, much less detail was spent there than on other topics (as is appropriate). I would have preferred the space used for something else.

For me, the best part of the book, by far, was the first to sections which deal with polearms, maces, etc. Few books cover these weapons at all, and Oakeshott does an excellent job, detailing each weapon's evolution and tactical use. Even if you know all there is know on swords (unlikely), these tow sections are worth the cost alone.

Overall, an excellant book. It is written in a casual but precise way, and the accompanying scetches are very nice. Definitely worth it.

Because this book was released at the same time as John Laband released "Rope of Sand" there were bound to be comparisons, but Taylor escaped virtually unscathed. While Laband's masterpiece is majestic and quite brilliant, Taylor has assured his readers of an entertaining journey through nineteenth-century Zululand. Although there is no ground-breaking material contained in the book, it is well-researched and cleverly written. Taylor quotes extensively from the James Stuart Archives and other reliable sources. Sometimes, for instance when he writes about the relationship between the young Shaka and his mother Nandi, the tone becomes cluttered with melodrama. But there is no doubt that the age was one of great drama, and so Taylor is excused the verbose frillings. In conclusion, then, this is a fine historical book, worthy of any library and a tempting setwork for future South African history scholars.

The greatest pictorial work on Okavango!.......2001-02-02

Frans Lanting had created marvelous book. His pictures portray the unique beauty of the region, convey the wildness of a place, and force a viewer to visit the place immediately. The photographs and text also urge the people to save this unique ecosystem. We realize the impact of water on the unique environment of the delta that supports the greatest variety of the flora and fauna in the world. At the same time these photographs make us realize what will be lost if the water will be gone. This book has inspired me even more after I visited the Okavango delta. It made me to relive my own experiences once again. After more than 5 years of its publication, this book is still the best pictorial work on Okavango delta. Simply, the greatest!

This is a terrific book to learn more about this region. I can't recommend the book enough. The photography is stunning and the narrative is just right. I only wish it didn't end.

Frans Lanting sees Botswana with a keen eye........1999-02-06

Mr. Lanting is a unique and wonderful photographer who is a great help to all of us. His photos capture the wildlife of the Okavango as they are -- not postcard photos. He has a respect and reverence of this fragile ecosystem (unlike none other in the world) and all that lives and dies there that is captured in this book. Botswana is a special country with a unique ecosystem in the Delta that you should travel to. I've had the good fortune to experience Africa eight times, Botswana twice. I will return many times to the Delta as there is so much there to experience and each time its fresh. Let Mr. Lantings photos pursuade you to go.

This book makes me suspect that Frans Lanting is not only the worlds greatest wildlife photographer but also the greatest bird photographers, crocodile photographer, elephant photographer etc. As usual, his photography is far from the species type of photography often seen. Lanting connects with the subject and transform the experience into art. In addition, he is not afraid to break the rules and make it work. The book is a must in any nature photographers library.
