    Book Description

The advent of new stock markets (the German Neuer Markt, the French Nouveau Marché, the Italian Nuovo Mercato and Nasdaq Europe) has been one of the most important reforms of stock exchanges in Continental Europe in the 1990s. These stock markets aimed at attracting early stage, innovative and high-growth firms that would not have been viable candidates for public equity financing on the main markets of European stock exchanges. Of these new markets, the Neuer Markt emerged as Europe's answer to NASDAQ. However, Europe's new stock markets met with only limited success. Stock prices plummeted after the ending of the stock market bubble and new markets suffered from poor liquidity, insider trading scandals and accounting frauds. This volume provides an overview of the rise and fall of Europe's new stock markets. It contains twelve papers which investigate the characteristics, the ownership structure and the market performance of companies in the short and long run, In addition this volume examines the role of venture capitalists. New stock markets offered venture capitalists an attractive exit for their investments and helped to create a more vibrant venture capital industry in Europe. The private equity market in Europe today is as large as it was just before the advent of new stock markets. As such, the need for stock markets that allow private equity investors to divest their equity stakes in growth companies continues to exist.

        Book Description

During the past thirty years Asia has seen substantial increases in crop yields due to advances in plant breeding and the use of nitrogenous and phosphatic fertilizers. Whether this Green Revolution can continue to keep up with population growth remains an open question, especially given that in some cases yields are no longer being sustained. Soil quality is a key issue, and this book discusses ways to reverse soil degradation and improve nutrient levels in Asia. The result of an international conference held in Bali in December 1996 and initiated by The World Phosphate Institute (IMPHOS), the volume includes reports on nutrient management and balance, the potential of different phosphate sources, rock phosphate efficiency in acid upland soils, current usage and future requirements for fertilizers, sustainability and the environment, and policy and pricing.

        Book Description

The reductionist programme in biology has yielded amazing insights into the basic processes of life. In particular, the explanation of many cellular processes at the molecular level has revolutionized our understanding of biology. However, given the vast increase in the amount of analytical information now being obtained, we have to ask how much we really need to know in order to 'understand' a biological process. The reductionist programme raises fundamental questions about levels of explanation. This book brings together a celebrated group of philosophers and scientists to discuss these problems. Some chapters deal with the enormously powerful techniques of molecular biology, and analyse precisely how molecular information has improved our understanding of biological processes. Others deal with specific physiological systems in relation to the appropriateness of attempts to provide reductionist explanations. The area of brain and behaviour is given particularly close attention because there are a number of differing views held by scientists about whether an analytical and reductionist approach is even desirable in this context. Separate chapters deal with ecological and evolutionary issues. Providing a comprehensive account of the application of reductionist ideas in biology, this book deals with controversial ideas, particularly in relation to reductionist explanations of behaviour, and presents both sides of the argument. The issues raised are relevant to virtually every area of biological research.

4 out of 5 stars Can life be explained by first principles?.......2000-04-08

This book is the result of a symposium held 13-15 May 1997 exploring the question, if science can explain life by first principles. A series of seventeen chapters each presenting a thesis followed by a panel discussion covers a broad spectrum of biology. For biologists, reductionism means that a particular characteristics of a living organism can be explained in terms of chemistry and physics. This would, in other words, eliminate the need for biology as a science. No wonder the question is important to biologists. The problem with biology, unlike physics, is that its objects of interest are extremely complex. The simpler a system, and this does not refer to size, the easier it is to understand it based on first principles, i.e., that reductionism works and the whole is simply the sum of its parts. Exploring the limits of reductionism in biology is important, because there is ample evidence that many fields of biological studies are non-reductionist in nature. It appears to be the goal of the book to show that much of biology cannot be reduced to physico-chemical properties. Take consciousness as an example. Consciousness is the function of a very complex organ and not reducible to an atomistic description. Which does not mean that there aren't any people who believe that with enough work and insight, a reductionist explanation of the mind might one day be achieved, but that there are simply too many parameters still undiscovered for such an approach to work today.

According to the scientists presenting and discussing their work, the limits of reductionism in biology lie somewhere between biochemistry and physiology, with biochemistry being the most reductionist branch of biology (the body is a chemical factory). The series of chapters are organized accordingly. After a general epistemological presentation of the problem by the philosopher Thomas Nagel, scientists present aspects of biological studies that are clearly reductionist in character. These include the study of structure and function of macromolecules and the analysis of bacterial metabolism as an example of biological computation. The majority of contributions, however, come from studies resisting any reductionist explanation. This is true for the physiology of the human heart, the brain (memory, hearing), animal behavior, ecological systems, and mechanism of natural selection. Evidently, any theory of the chemical bond can tell us nothing about behavior, but certainly about the structure of a protein. The limits of reductionism in biology are intuitive. They are found right there where a Descartian philosophy would compare an organism to a machine (reductionist), while a holistic view sees higher level properties as 'emerging' from complex systems (anti-reductionist).

I believe this is an important book, but because it is the result of a scientific conference, presentations and discussions include terms like phototaxis, steady-state, subsynaptic cytoplasm, imprinting, equilibrium thermodynamics, gap junctions, long-term potentiation, sarcoplasmic reticulum, all of which have specific meanings unfamiliar to the general reader. The readers benefiting best are scientists interested in the philosophical aspect of their work. Add a glossary explaining scientific terms and this book could be made into an interesting and easier to read book for a readership beyond the scientific community.

          Book Description

In many past and recent earthquakes it has been shown that the local conditions and, in particular, the local geology have a great influence on the observed seismic ground motion and, consequently, on the damage distribution in housing, industrial stock, and life-lines. Seismic microzoning is the usual procedure to have these local effects taken into account for engineering design and land-use planning, being a useful tool for earthquake risk mitigation. This volume presents a collection of papers mainly originated from a workshop on Seismic Microzoning, organized during the 23rd General Assembly of the European Geophysical Society (EGS) in Nice, France in April 1998. The workshop dealt with various geophysical tools for analysing the effects of the local soils of subsurface geology on seismic ground motion, namely the methods using experimental data such as microtremors, and the theoretical/numerical 1-D and 2-D modelling methods. Additional contributions discussing techniques for characterising soil properties, microzoning applications to several urban areas, and others were added to the volume to broaden this important topic.

One More Beer and I Gotta Go will offend you in some way. That is a promise. From the moment you first meet James Laslow, you will immediately fall in love with him and hate him. Yet, you will love him and hate him for one simple reason. You see him inside of you. These are his memoirs from his senior year in high school all the way until his ten-year class reunion. Never will you find a boring moment inside of One More Beer and I Gotta Go from the high school running back that wants to be a magician to the bachelor party from hell where the groom's father does a keg stand to eating cold Chef Boyardee at a tavern in the middle of nowhere. These are laugh aloud anecdotes, but in between those insane stories of his youth come nuggets of truth showing what is real from his best friend to his love life. Simply think Dazed and Confused meets American Pie meets Breakfast at Tiffany's meets Scooby-Doo meets Romeo and Juliet.

                  Book Description

Rorke's Drift sums up some of the best traditions of the British self-image: steadfastness against the odds, victory in adversity and the thin red line. The British stand deserves to go down in history as one of the most heroic actions of all time. The story of a mere 150 British and Imperial soldiers defending an isolated outpost against over 3,000 Zulu warriors summed up the experience of the colonial adventure for the Victorians and remains part of our heritage even today. Ian Knight recounts the course of this famous conflict in which no less than 11 Victoria crosses were won.

5 out of 5 stars WRITTEN BY THE BEST!.......2007-09-11

I wanted a concise history of Rorke's Drift, and this book more than fit the bill. Ian Knight is the undisputed expert on the Zulu War's, so that is a bonus, as are the wonderful illustrations and photographs that Osprey books are known for. You can't go wrong with this one. It is a wonderful, informative read.

5 out of 5 stars Great Information in a small space.......2006-04-01

This was a wonderful read, informative, concise and clear. The explanations of the cause of the war, the cause of this battle, the tactics used, the actual ebb & flow of the combat and the aftermath are all very well presented. The illustrations and photographs add quite well to the written information. If your only information on this battle comes from the movie Zulu, you really should pick this up and read it to get the real story, which is even more fascinating than the movie makes it out to be.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent account of a hard fought battle.......2000-10-20

Ian Knight did an excellent job in presenting the famous battle of Rorke's Drift which pitted 150 British and Imperial Soldiers against over 3000 battle trained and tested Zulu warriors. Knight describes the circumstances that led to the battle beginning with the British having posts far within Zulu territory (present day South Africa) and having failed peace treaties between the British Crown and Zulu Kings. These treaties between the British Empire and Zulu Nation began with the great King Shaka Zulu and newly crowned Queen Victoria, and as such previous times the British Empire wanted more land subjegated under their influence. Thus began the trouble. This book describes the background of this and also tells about the British loss at Isandlwana which is considered one of the worst defeats in British History. The battle at Rorke's Drift was fought due to one of the Zulu nobility wanting his warriors to fight and taste blood without realizing the tremendous loss of warriors would take place. The British and its Imperial Forces (Boers, and non Zulu tribesmen) did an outstanding job by defending the Rorke's Drift Outpost and thus gaining immortal glory. This is an outstanding book that is highly recommended to those who want to read about overcoming tremendous odds and bravery at all levels of both the British and Zulu Warriors.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book to initiate anyone into the Anglo-Zulu War.......1999-07-13

This book is highly recommended for anyone who wishes to acquaint themselves with battles of Isandlwana, and especially, Rorke's Drift. The author gives a brief history of the British presence in South Africa that led to the events of 22-23 January, 1879. Knight gives a detailed and accurate account of the battle at Rorke's Drift using battlefield drawings showing the movement of both troups, British and Zulu. The author also does a good job of disspelling many myths that have surrounded the battle for years. An added plus is the vast array of vintage photos of many of the key players in the Anglo-Zulu campaign. For anyone that wants to get a short(96 pages), concise, detailed history of Rorke's Drift, you will never need more than this book.

4 out of 5 stars Dispells some myths.......1999-05-20

I enjoyed the book as it corrected some of the inconsistencies shown in the movie and fact from hollywood's license.

Martin Gilbert, official biographer of Winston Churchill, is a British historian of the highest credentials. He attempts here in 1,000 short pages to encapsulate the tumultuous events of the second half of the 20th century. In straightforward language, he presents a chronological narrative of what happened around the world. Each year is given its own chapter. His direct style recaptures the immediacy of the epoch-making events he describes, and the book sometimes reads like a breaking news report. The author maintains a laudable objectivity: The material is not Eurocentric but attempts to provide a genuine world overview. Besides politics, he includes stories with social significance, such as environmental disasters, the plight of refugees, even the sociological impact of birth-control pills. Thirty-six maps clarify accounts of military campaigns and international and ethnic rivalries, and 52 photographs present iconic images of the period. What Gilbert cannot do within this narrative format is analyze or comment at length on the episodes he is describing. Themes such as the growing awareness of human rights or the increasingly interrelated nature of complex global phenomena emerge almost by accident; they are not defined and developed, and the book becomes a prodigious procession of unfolding events. The value of A History of the Twentieth Century is as an encyclopedia, as an easily accessible store of raw material: in this sense it is a useful addition to the amateur historian's library. --John Stevenson

                    Book Description

Martin Gilbert brings readers up to date in this rich historical narrative of the contradictory events of the last fifty years. Volume II ended in 1951, as the world recovered from World War II, and the nuclear threat increased. In this volume, Gilbert recalls the Cold War and communism--including McCarthyism, the Soviet and Warsaw Pact, the Berlin Wall--and the wars, from Korea to Vietnam to Bosnia. He moves from Poland's Solidarity Movement to Ireland's Bloody Sunday, from Pol Pot and his killing fields to the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Mao began a cultural revolution, Martin Luther King, Jr. and John F. Kennedy were assassinated, and Beijing's Tiananamen Square shocked the world. Technology and medicine advanced in leaps and bounds as the society struggled to catch up. Art, literature, and music, as well as epidemics and natural disasters, all have their place here. Many of the events are described through the words of those who were present. As in the previous two volumes, Gilbert creates a vivid picture through a wide array of sources. The result is extraordinary.

Here we have the conclusion of Martin Gilbert's massive three-volume history of the 20th century. One running theme is the relentless conflict ever present in the world. We didn't gain any wisdom in the last century. Starting with WWI and WWII to Vietnam, Lebanon, and Rwanda, we do keep killing each other somewhere. An old joke goes something much as this: for one brief, fleeting moment there was peace on earth. It lasted just long enough for everyone to re-load. Much attention is given in the book to remote regions of the world. America and Western Europe are relegated to the back burner. If it happened in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa, or anywhere in the Third World, the author seemingly considers it more worthy. Gilbert asserts that world history is certainly more than America and Western Europe. He then proceeds accordingly in a deliberate and thoughtfully eclectic manner. The defining event of the second half of the 20th century may have been the collapse of the Soviet Union. The previous tensions between the super powers were filtered down to regional conflicts. To date, the 21st century isn't any better. So it goes. This is a tremendous endeavor by the author. It also requires time and perseverance by the reader. The text is almost 1,000 pages. Many maps are included in the appendix. There are also plentiful B&W photos. Not to everyone's taste, perhaps, but worthwhile for armchair historians. ;-)

Martin Gilbert, a British Jew who has written extensively and comprehensively on history, has added to his compendiums a three-volume set on the 20th century as a whole.

Martin Gilbert's writing and selection of material is first class. He chronicles the history of the 20th century through three substantial volumes (each bout 500 pages long), covering everything from the horrors of the World Wars to Global Warming. Most of the examples reflect in some way or another the historical currents and trends at the time, and show a deep and mature understanding of history.

The written format of the book is somewhat unusual, seeming more like a series of newspaper clippings than a true study of the 20th century. But it is wrong to claim that this is merely 'collecting clippings' at random. Gilbert's selections, often tragic and poignant, magnify the human dimensions of history often neglected in more formal studies of the subject. Whether it is the promising Russian writer deported to Siberia to be shot, the cold, hungry Jew in Auschwitz, the miserable African living in a refugee camp in absolute squalor, or the harried World War I soldier, Gilbert captures them all.

The only real weakness of Gilbert's three-volume study is the lack of restrospective commentary on the events he depicts. Gilbert appears to suppress his personal views and opinions, for the main part, in favour of recording historical events objectively. This makes the work somewhat more dry and less aware of the 'human' dimension in history; a perspective badly needed for a century as violent and fast-changing as the 20th. Nevertheless, this study is a fine introduction to the history of the 20th century.

A very disappointing set of books, reads like strung together clippings of (primarily) political events from newspapers. Inconsistent in places, dead wrong in others, practically no synthesis. OK perhaps if you want an outline of some of the major events and when they occurred, but to get the significance and any depth of analysis, you'll have to look elsewhere. One of the strangest excuses for "History" I've ever read.

                    4 out of 5 stars A flawed masterpiece.......2001-03-07

I can hardly imagine a more compelling (i.e., compulsively readable) account of the major events of the twentieth century than Gilbert's in the first volume of this allegedly "masterful" book; it is the events themselves that account for most of the book's interest, not any explanation of them offered by Gilbert.Gilbert's views can be inferred only from what he thinks fit to include in his book, and what not. Curiously enough, what is remarkable about the book--Gilbert's willingness to stand aside, to allow events their intrinsic interest--is exactly what many readers find fault with it--namely in the absence of a considered world-outlook, an overarching explanation of or attitude towards the events he describes. That he offers no explanation cannot be denied; but to this reader an attitude towards the events he describes is so clearly implicit in his language as to constitute a kind of intellectual autobiography: Gilbert, despite his strong commitment to England and Israel, is utterly fair-minded in describing them. (For example, he is shocked by the willingness of generals [particularly Haig and Kitchener] to feed thousands of young men to German machine guns in the interest of gaining ten feet of ground along the Siegfried line.He is staggered by the quasi-feudal political arrangement that enabled the Habsburgs and the Hohenzollerns to ride roughshod over the slight democratic process in place in Autria-Hungary and in Germany, and by the revolting anti-semitism of both leaders, who ignored the fact that Jews were fighting for their countries, and explained the incipient social revolution occasioned by the tragic loss of life to "Jewish-led communism.") He is willing to allow facts to speak for themselves (each major initiative in WWI is characterized in terms of numbers--of deaths, of casualties civilian and military). He believes, to some extent, that history is out of human control, and thus we get a palindrome at the end of each chapter detailing the loss of life to "Acts of God" and to sepsis. He writes a good English style, never opaque though full of implication, but his book is horrendously badly edited, a statistic on one page at variance with the same statistic on another page, and the grammatical howlers, superfluous words, bad punctuation doubtless originate in the unseemly haste with which Gilbert pours out his popular histories. Nevertheless, I would not willingly part with a single page of these books, as they purvey something more valuable than "vision": they convey a sense of the tragedy of this century, its odd, paradoxical commitment to decency hand in hand with a savage, unpitying biologically driven tendency to make a god of death and killing.

                    5 out of 5 stars Final Of Gilbert's Terrific 3 Volume 20th Century History.......2000-10-29

British historian and academic Sir Martin Gilbert (knighted by the Queen in 1995) has a well-deserved reputation as one of the most authoritative academics on the subject of the twentieth century, and has written perhaps more prolifically than anyone else on various aspects of this remarkable epoch. Indeed, he has written such a torrent of different books on everything ranging from a multiple volume biography of Sir Winston Churchill to histories of World War One, World War Two, that a complete accounting of his efforts would require more space than is available for the review. Thus it should come as no surprise that he has written a three-volume overview of the twentieth century itself. What is so surprising is how engaging, entertaining, and accessible each of the three volumes is to the reader.

In this third and final volume of the epic narrative of the twentieth century, Gilbert carefully and cogently describes the unfolding of the post world war drama as the struggle between the forces of the western democracies face down the forces of the socialist states of the Soviet Union, China, and Cuba in a fight for the hearts and minds of the burgeoning world population. In providing this continuous narrative thread from the beginnings of the struggle from the beginning of the century and the transformation from all that was traditional, autocratic, and orderly to all that was democratic, innovative, and chaotic, we see the master forces behind the massive dislocations, murderous warfare, and technological transformations that characterize the last hundred years. Of course, much of the narrative covering the last fifty years is a description of regional conflicts, from the so-called police action in Korea to American involvement in Vietnam, from the continuing Irish "troubles" to the murderous genocide in Cambodia under Pol Pot, from the fratricide in Rwanda to the ethnic cleansing in Bosnia and Kosovo, this is a portrait of an increasingly violent, dissonant, and fractured world in which many more voices, angry and otherwise, add to the shouts and clamorous sounds of history.

From the description of the postwar resurrection in Europe to the momentous dissolution of the Soviet Union in the last ten years, this is a narrative of a world in the process of multiplying its faces, voices, and flavors. This is a book that engages the reader in the spectacle of the transformation of our world from everything autocratic, traditional and rigidly controlled to all that became so characteristic of the century thereafter; democratic, irrational, murderous, and wildly chaotic. With an amazing and delightful eye for absorbing detail, Gilbert threads his way through the particular personalities, events and issues as they arise chronologically. One criticism I have read about concerning the book is absolutely dead-on, and that is Gilbert does somewhat pedantically stick to a faithful chronological narrative.

Yet, given the plethora of events, issues, personalities and changes occurring throughout the world, any other organization would suffer from other problems such as maintaining context for the reader, so one can appreciate all that faced a particular leader in a given situation. Understanding how the multitudes of actors, issues, and countries are involved and intertwined lends itself to better comprehension, at least in this reviewer's mind. After all, it is mind-boggling to understand in the last hundred years the western world transformed itself in almost every dimension imaginable; technological, scientific, social, economic, and philosophical. To attempt to do justice to this wide panoply of revolutionary change requires a certain perspective and rigorous discipline to do so, especially in the 3,000 or so pages allotted to the overall work. This is a book and also three volume set I can heartily recommend. Enjoy!

This exceptional reference belongs on the shelf of anyone, not just programmers, who presents quantitative data for scientific audiences. The authors discuss graphic design issues only briefly. Instead, the real core of this book is its 128 case studies, with topics including comparisons, multivariate data, time processes, and more. Each study identifies the researchers who originated the display, the scientific phenomena under study, and the programs and hardware used to generate the study's sample images. An unusual set of indexes then sort the images in several ways. Functionally, different displays identify shape, correlate scalar or vector fields, emphasize cluster of similar values, and so on (Appendices A, B, and C). Displays are also categorized by numbers of dependent and independent variables (Appendix D), and by the application area from which the example was drawn (Appendix E). An extensive glossary and numerous references give other ways for readers to expand their understanding of each image, or of image generation in general.

Many readers will benefit from this set of examples. That includes the scientists who have huge volumes of high-dimensional data to reduce to human scale, as well as technical illustrators looking for inspiration in organizing oceans of numbers for maximum impact. The ideal readers, however, may be programmers with good graphics skills and more CPU cycles than they know what to do with, and who want to learn from best examples of the time.

The only small problem with this book is that its time is 1993, when it was published. Rendering hardware and practice have moved on, especially in illustrations for biological and biochemical concepts. Also, a few examples (e.g. 1-9) disregard that one male in 8 (one woman in 64) with some kind of color vision deficiency. Don't let those deter you, though. The concepts presented are still salient, the examples are just as meaningful as ever, and the principles of human perception are timeless. This remains a worthwhile reference for everyone involved in creating, comprehending, or presenting large, complex data sets.

Nature is an untamable and chaotic system that needs our protection, as so does humans. Earth, Air, Fire, Water: Humanistic Studies of the Environment edited by Jill Ker Conway, Kenneth Keniston, and Leo Marx., is a collection of essays gives an account on how humanists realized the importance of the study of the environment and how modern organizations have been very valuable in protecting the further degradation of the ecosystem due to industrial progress. This book is a valuable tool for an introductory academic study of the initial stages in policy making as it recollects the real-life examples on how humans have affected the natural course of ecological environment due to the implementation of programs and projects that have failed due to the lack of information and knowledge of this specific science. The intention of these set of essays is to incorporate the different narratives produced by different environmentalists over the period of time, how culture, politics and gender has played an important role in the conservation of nature that had led to a myriad of ways of protecting it. In a broad view nature is a set of chaotic events that can neither be modified nor controlled. Through history human beings have been led to the idea that through technology nature can be tamed, but different catastrophes have forced us to realize its fragility and how in the event of few years we have reverted evolution that have evolved over the course of millions of years. Now, that humanity has science to measure change, it is expected that we will make better decisions however, other players come into the game such as politics, economy and the unavoidable power necessity.

Scientists have acknowledged that humans are responsible for the radical change in the environment. According to the editors, there is a new trend on how different institutions, men and women respond to these problems. The interest nowadays is how "environmental degradation" affects people and culture and how they respond to these problems respectively. The following set of essays provide social perspective on how environmentalists have used the idea of sacredness to protect places. Many of these ideas of sacredness come from non-European civilizations. Europeans viewed Native Americans as being "more close to nature", savage due to their nakedness and their closeness to natural environments. However, these essays provide a new perspective because they demystify culture by explaining that many environmental problems come from Indian practices such as burning, that rural communities in the Amazon will not care if they are polluting the environment as when it comes to doing business, it means more money for their families. In terms of institutional intervention, two other essays address how environmental activism has strengthen due to the proliferation of toxic dumps near poor minority communities, something nowadays called "environmental racism", likewise, how the Russians have no interest in environmentalism due to the collapse of their government, and women's participation in initiatives in their rural communities are decisive because they are the ones who gather fuel wood from forests and the destruction of forests make it difficult for their survival. As it seems, these essays provide a culture-based perspective on modern environmental issues. Nature is been affected directly by human intervention, these changes occur on the localized level therefore, environmentalists should stay focused on specific issues.

However, with new environmental issues on the horizon, environmentalists are lead to new perspectives in addressing these problems such as a new movement called "eco-feminism". Women are viewed in a pastoral interpretation as being "closer to nature" (such as Indians as described in a previews essay). The essay proposes that the environment has been degraded by men. Historically women have neither had real influence nor participation in institutions that have had part in "contemporary environmental destruction". Men are environmental hazards due to male-related activities such as hunting. Women on the other hand are more concerned on nature related issues due to childbearing. On the other hand, another essay acknowledges new perspectives on modernity and its analysis on the Enlightenment perspective on technology, and how in a modern perspective "scientists and engineers are associated with the devastation of nature". Scientists are viewed as custodians of nature. They identify that the problems in nature are a consequence of different institutional effects. It is therefore, necessary to understand first hand the socioeconomic context of the said issue before dealing with it. These specific problems are rooted in history and culture and leave "presentism"on the side. Presentism by itself accuses modern scientists of the problems that exist in the present. The editors of the book call for a new postmodern thinking that will be inclusive and will recognize the social role of science and engineering.

Since the book has different voices that address many problems, it can serve as the first step towards the education of our fragile environment. All of the essays are very well written and contain a large bibliography that can serve as a reference for future research. As the title suggest, nature is composed of different elements such as the earth, air, fire and water, they are all interrelated, therefore should be studied by an interdisciplinary approach. All problems are caused by individual issues related to culture, politics and history, therefore environmentalists should unite their efforts to address specific and localized problems by including all social institutions and citizens in the conservation of our natural environment.
