some clarification.......2006-12-21
I felt the need to clarify some of the information that other reviewers have submitted. First of all, Wiley's Focus Notes have worked well for me. As one reviewer suggested, there are abbreviations used. However, these abbreviations are made with the assumption that you have some basic understanding of the material, and you are using these for review. It sounds like the reviewer is using these as his principle method of study. In which case, there are no flash cards out there that would help such an individual, as they are all made for review (not study)
Also, I like the spiral binding. You don't have to worry about losing or misplacing cards. Just make sure you have a paper clip or two to mark your place. Hope this helps. This is a really really good product, and I hate to see it disparaged.
Not very useful.......2006-01-17
These Focus Notes don't provide any additional material beyond what Wiley's CPA review books have. Also, it seems like they overly abbreviate material sometimes in order to fit it on one page. At times, the organization of the information is confusing. Moreover, this is somewhat of an awkward format to work with - no wonder there aren't very many books out there with spiral binding at the top of the page.
The whole point of Wiley books is that they're cheaper than the books you'd get with a review course. Yet, you can get a set of Becker flashcards off eBay for the price of these Focus Notes. I'd go with the flashcards.

Book Description
Latina Ivy League grad Milagro de Los Santos can't find her place in the world or a man to go with it. Then one night, at a book party for her pretentious ex-boyfriend, she meets an oddly attractive man. After she is bitten while kissing him, she falls ill and is squirreled away to his family's estate to recover. Vampires don't exist in this day and age -- or do they? As Milagro falls for a fabulously inappropriate man, she finds herself caught between a family who has accepted her as one of their own and a shady organization that refuses to let the undead live and love in peace.
Customer Reviews:
Happiness!.......2007-08-14
This author is sooo good! The book is well-written, involving and fun, fun, fun. The characters are well realized, especially the oh so clever Latina gardener/reluctant vampire. Don't get on her bad side, baby! Just sit back and enjoy - you can't go wrong with this book or the sequel.
Marta Acosta is pitch-perfect!.......2007-05-15
I am not a person who would normally gravitate towards a book whose title elicits imagery of blood-sucking and booze. A friend sent me "Happy Hour at Casa Dracula", and from the moment I started to read this genius book of fun, I was hooked! Marta Acosta has written a witty, tongue-in-cheek romantic comedy which closely parallels Jane Austen's "Mansfield Park". This is NOT a paranormal romance, but rather a sultry, satirical romp which takes the reader along for the fun. I can only hope that some astute producer options this book for a movie! I cannot recommend "Casa Dracula" highly enough!
Sometimes You Just Want a Fun Read..........2006-12-13
This gem is filled with charm and edge in the same breath. I enjoyed the main character Milagro's refreshing wit and sense of humor. The author has also created a fun spin on the usual vampire theme. Marta has a very unique style of keeping things light and humorous yet not insulting your intelligence. It is obvious she has a great capacity for storing a plethora of information and somehow making it fun and useful in this novel. I am buying this one for my buddies for the Holidays!!!
I'm in love with Milagro.......2006-12-12
OK - I have to admit I didn't plan on liking this book. It was sitting on the shelf next to the bed and I was bored. But the characters got to me almost immediately. Milagro is a strong quirky, sexy and slightly vulnerable woman with a great sense of fashion and an even greater sense of adventure. She reminded me of my wife (and trust me, that's a good thing!) The vampires are all interesting people with real lives and human frailties. There is wit, charm and adventure here all in good measure. I particularly enjoyed the pace of the dialogue. It's a bit too fast of a read, but all that means is there really needs to be a sequel.
Quirky, intelligent, and a great read.......2006-12-11
I've been a fan of Marta's writing for years now, in its various incarnations (webzines, newspapers, and more). She's a funny and thoughtful author, who doesn't let you off the hook easily with trite ideas.
Take someone as gifted as that, and it's natural that her first book would be something that you haven't seen before. The story boasts a strong Latina lead but she goes on to mix in some romance and some danger, throw in a secret organization, some clever wordplay, and she ends up with a great read.
Go ahead an order this right now, and - while you're at it - pre-order her next book as well. (I did, I liked this one so much.)

Book Description
The clash between King Richard I ‘The Lionheart’ of England and Saladin has become legendary. Throughout the ages, military enthusiasts have been fascinated by the strategy of the resolute, heavily armed Anglo-Saxon army versus their more lightly armed opponents. Richard’s inability to recapture Jerusalem was disappointing, but it proved to the crusaders that Saladin was not invincible. This book describes the struggle that has evolved into a mythic campaign for the Holy City of Jerusalem, providing an in-depth look at the battle, the personalities involved and the tactics employed by each army.
Customer Reviews:
Good Overview.......2007-02-20
These small Osprey books on various historical events pack in a lot of information and present it in a very easy to understand language that the casual reader may find a good source for research.
David Nicolle is a good historical writer, speaking in plain English and keeping the reader interested. The material in this particular offering is well balanced. There are books that have focused on one side of the story, or the other. Nicolle very successfully attempts to keep both sides focused, discussing the pros and cons of each leader, giving each side to the story and a very well rounded look at the events.
However the book, because of its size, does not go into some of the finer details or "in depth" examination of events and situations that some might be looking for. To be honest, these books are not intended for that purpose. There are volumes out there that you can spend years going through. This book is meant as an overview of the topic and should be taken as such.
The battles do not go into as much detail as some of the other books put out by Osprey. The usual focus of these books is to look at a particular historical event or aspect and go into details. But in choosing a large historical event like The Third Crusade in such a small presentation, there will be a lot left out. The book focuses on a singular year, 1191, in which the whole Crusade came to a crashing close. While the lead up to this year is examined, the focus is more on the battles fought that year and how it brought about the end of that era. And even this is a lot to cover in such a small format.
Not to be left out are the graphics, photographs, maps and the artistic renderings of Christa Hook. These elements are included to keep the interest of the reader. There is a lot of photographs to go over, giving the reader an overview of the art, architecture landscape and battle fields of the time. Christa Hooks paintings give the book a feeling of action, and adds interest to the story.
The maps are valuable and in this book they have included what they label as "3D views" of the particular battlefields. While interesting, I didn't find it added anything to the overview of the battles. However, they are nice topographical additions to the book.
Going over this book, I would have to say this will appeal to the school aged reader who is looking to write a book report for school, or augment their studies of the Historical Crusades. It will even appeal to the casual reader who is curious, but not a serious student of the Crusades.
This is a good look at the cultures of the time, both the Crusaders as well as the forces of Saladin. Some of the key battles are examined. And it favors neither side. We are presented with a fair view of the events. A good overview and presentation of the material. medievalcrusadesbabe
Offers Cultural Perspectives, but less on military side.......2005-12-21
Dr. David Nicolle continues his survey of Medieval battles in Osprey Campaign #161, The Third Crusade 1191. Certainly the clash between two charismatic opponents - Saladin and Richard the Lionheart - make for an interesting subject and Nicolle handles it with admirable balance. However, Dr. Nicolle's primary interests lie in the cultural realm - particularly Islamic art and architecture - and readers seeking more detail on the military aspects of the campaign will find these matters covered in a more perfunctory manner. Furthermore, the graphic quality of this volume - the maps and the battle scenes - is somewhat less than in other Osprey volumes.
This volume includes five 2-D maps (the forces assemble, 1188-91; events in Cyprus, Syria and Palestine, 1188-91; the siege of Acre, 1191; the coastal march; and after Arsuf, 1191-92) and three 3-D BEV maps (initial movements on 7 September 1191; Richard's counterattack and later phases of the Battle of Arsuf). Unfortunately, the 2-D maps are far too complicated, with up to 36-37 events in several maps, and the 3-D maps are "zoomed out" too far to see any close-up detail of the Battle of Arsuf. A close up 2-D map showing the relative dispositions of each army would be more useful to the reader than maps that just show a bunch of blocks and arrows. Also, no individual units or formations are identified in the 3-D maps, unlike most Osprey volumes. The three battle scenes are: Richard's men tearing down the Duke Leopold's banner at Acre, the death of Ayaz al-Tawil and King Richard ordering the Crusader cavalry to halt at Arsuf. Frankly, these battle scenes are rather disappointing, being rather "primitive" and lacking in detail compared to the artwork that normally appears in this series.
Dr. Nicolle's introductory sections on opposing commanders, armies and plans are quite good, although readers unfamiliar with this era would be wise to read the earlier volume on the preceding Hattin campaign first. The only weakness in this material is the lack of any kind of order of battle or even the identification of any specific formations beyond generic nomenclature such as "the Damascus contingent." Surely some Crusader banners under Richard must have been identified? Although the main focus of the volume is on the struggle between Saladin and Richard Lionheart, Dr. Nicolle also makes interesting observations about Sunni-Shia power-sharing arrangements in the 12th Century and politics in the rump Crusader states. The author also provides brief background on the death of Barbarossa before moving on to the siege of Acre and the Battle of Arsuf.
Although Dr. Nicolle's narrative about the Battle of Arsuf is quite coherent, it is difficult to follow actions on the 3-D maps. Nor does the author pay enough attention to Crusader logistics - which other sources note as having a major impact on the campaign. Furthermore, the author does not mention relative strengths and losses at Arsuf, although other sources do include estimates. Arsuf took some of the luster off Saladin's reputation but the Crusaders were not strong enough to regain Jerusalem - although Nicolle suggests that it might have been in their reach. The volume ends with an excellent bibliography and notes on the battlefield today. It is obvious that Dr. Nicolle is well-versed in the cultural aspects of his subject, if not the specific military details.

A flawed but interesting study.......2001-10-02
In Africa in America, Michael Mullin attempts to link the level of assimilation among American slaves with the forms of resistance they displayed. While he does not believe that assimilation into white culture actually made slaves more or less likely to rebel, Mullin argues that the nature of their resistance to slavery was heavily influenced by how much of their native African culture they retained. To prove his theory, Mullin contrasts Caribbean slave culture, which was much less influenced by European practices, with slave societies in the American South, where African traditions were minimalized.
To do so, he relies primarily on sources such as plantation records, travelers' accounts, and contemporary newspapers, as well as a variety of secondary sources. Unfortunately, while these sources are perhaps well suited for understanding black culture in the Caribbean, they do not provide much information on slave culture in the Chesapeake and Carolinas, which leads Mullin to make incorrect assumptions that undermine the validity of his comparison.
Because Caribbean planters were so outnumbered by their slaves, they were much more likely than Southern masters to become intimately acquainted with their slaves, and include their observations of black culture in chronicles of plantation life. This results in the impression that African traditions were actually more prevalent among slaves in that region, whereas in actuality the practices of Southern slaves were simply less likely to be recorded in the writings of their masters. Subsequent studies by Robert Olwell and Phillip Morgan show that African traditions were retained by Carolina slaves, and to a lesser degree by Virginians. While Mullin may ultimately be correct in his assertion that Caribbean slaves were less assimilated, this characterization cannot be proven with his limited sources. For example, Mullin assumes that because Southern planters did not write lengthily about independent slave production and marketing, slaves did not enjoy a large role in local markets. A study of Charleston newspapers and legal proceedings would have shown otherwise.
Africa in America is therefore not of much use as a comparative study, but Mullin's observations on Caribbean slave culture and resistance may be treated independently. Here Mullin finds that slaves retained much more of their African heritage than previously thought by historians who believed that the traumas of the middle passage had a debilitating affect on native culture. Rather, newly arrived Africans immediately sought assistance in running away from seasoned tribal kinsman, often joining maroon communities. Those who did not immediately flee established societies similar to those they had left in Africa within the plantation community, and were likely to resist by wandering off for short periods, rather than in any organized rebellion. Only when slaves began to organize through Christian churches did they begin to plot the large-scale rebellions that would eventually win them freedom. Even in making this argument, however, Mullin is undermined by his lack of organization and tendency to jump around between time periods and places, making causality difficult to determine. Ultimately then, Africa in America is useful for its information on black Caribbean cultural and religious traditions, but little more.
A must!.......1997-03-04
Michael Mullin has done an impressive, one of most serious jobs on Slave Acculturation and Resistance 1736-1831 periode. Anyone doing serious work in this field cannot miss this reference

Book Description
This research assessed membrane integrity monitoring methods for microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF) membrane filtration processes. The project evaluated existing and newly developed methods for integrity monitoring using literature review and full-scale testing of the essential criteria of sensitivity, continuity, identifiably, reliability, and implementability. Recommendations are included. While this research was motivated by the USEPA's LT2ESWTR, the coverage and results have international applicability.
