Book Description
Koreans living in the United States have generated an increase in trade between the United States and Korea of about 15 to 20 percent. This is just one of the surprising conclusions reached in this report, which, upon the 100th anniversary of the migration of Koreans from their homeland, looks at the impact of the 6-7 million Korean people outside the Korean peninsula who make up this diaspora on both overseas economies and on South Korea.
No country in history has ever succeeded and built a developed and high-income economy without participating in the global economy; globalization is a requirement for economic success. And one of the major elements in globalization, in addition to international trade and international investment, is migration. In The Korean Diaspora in the World Economy, experts hold up South Korea as one of the most dramatic examples of that experience, having gone from a poor, underdeveloped country less than 40 years ago, to a postwar economic success story. The report also looks at South Korea's role as a regional trading partner and its present and future relations with North Korea.

Book Description
This laboratory manual with detailed background information and practical protocols will be a useful guide for researchers engaged in all areas of parasitology. Most techniques described here are suitable for helminths as well as protozoa, but also included are protocols for particular parasite species. Parasite infections are very widespread. However, effective therapeuticals are not yet available. The analysis of the life cycle and parasite host interactions at the molecular level may help in the search of the "Achilles heel" of a parasite and thus promote the development of new therapeutic approaches. Parasite molecules such as surface antigens, excretory proteins or metabolic enzymes may serve as targets for new diagnostics tests, chemo- or immunotherapeutics or even vaccination.

Book Description
At once a rousing entertaining farce and gentle love story, this novel is set on a remote Pacific island during the waning days of the World War II. It follows the adventures of a group of young officers in the public relations sector of the Navydescribed as commissioned without the corrupting influence of any intervening naval trainingas they face wartime adversities with comic ingenuity. For these mariners, the Navy's immortal motto, "Don't Give Up the Ship" had become "Don't Go Near the Water." In combining a colorful cast of characters with absurd situations, the author has created a high-spirited tale of naval service that has appealed to generations of readers since it was first published in 1956.
Customer Reviews:
Naval Ha-ha's.......2005-11-15
Well, I did read this book repeatedly in the late 50's and early 60's, so I cannot in good conscience rate it lower than 4 stars. It is a moderately entertaining, and by now quaintly old-fashioned, story of some admen pressed into U. S. Navy Public Relations service in the Pacific. While everyone else fought the Axis, they fought the Air Force for their fair share of public recognition. The funniest bit is where the PR guys launch a "Typical Young Navy Man" campaign and select their candidate sight unseen, merely because his name contains two famous naval historical figures--Farragut and (John Paul) Jones. When he comes ashore for briefing, he proves slovenly, foul-mouthed, and all but intractable. The movie version memorably bleeped out his every use of the f-word with a ship's horn that sounded every bit as foul as what it was masking!

Customer Reviews:
Modern warfare.......2006-11-10
Brightly written, it let the reader to look at the man responsible of the air offensive in First Iraq War. How a man can learn all the stuff needed to coordinate such an effort? Tom Clancy and Chuck Horner give us a glance of the different areas a General has to cover to bring a mision to a succesful end, including a very important one, to know the strong and weak points of your allies and of course thats of your enemy. It also makes recounts of the early years when Gen. Horner (Ret.) learn the basics and conducted missions in Vietnam and most important how that experience lead him to plan and coordinate the efforts in Iraq war in a totally different way. At the end the authors give a little view of the possible evolution of the military in USA and the importance of the air and space programs to the future of armed conflicts.
The book reveals also a the light side of Chuck Horner's personality and the importance he give to personal relations including the knowledge and experience he acquired when working in different Arab countries.
I learn a lot of the develompent of the military technologies, warfare and of course how a combat pilot becomes a leader for his men as well as for the men of other allied countries.
It actually is an easy to read book. Difficult to stop reading it, once you begin.

This Tom Clancy real-life military thriller is more nuanced than his novels, because its object is not simply to dramatize armed conflict but to relate the life lessons of his source, jet-pilot-turned-Desert-Storm-air-commander General Chuck Horner. Horner is no war cheerleader like General "Buck" Turgidson in Dr. Strangelove. He loathes the arrogance of the backwards, nuke-happy Strategic Air Command and the madly out-of-touch Vietnam War planner Robert McNamara. McNamara confesses his folly in two books, Argument Without End and In Retrospect, but Horner's you-are-there account more vividly demonstrates Vietnam's grim lessons. He flew an F-105 Thunderbird "Thud" fighter in the Wild Weasels, the unit with the highest medals-per-aircrew ratio, knew pilots who were stoned to death by villagers, and realized all the bombing did zero good. "All we really had to do was befriend Ho," says Horner sensibly. "Seems he wasn't part of a monolithic Communist plot, and hated the Chinese more than anything else." Horner is savvy about the screwups, the achievements, and the political maneuvering in and after the Gulf War, as leaders and branches of service battled for PR victories. His idea of a hero is Boomer McBroom's pilot Captain Gentner Drummond, who won a Flying Cross medal for refusing AWACS orders to down a jet that turned out to be a Saudi ally. Horner thinks the interservice and international cooperation in the Gulf War was way better than in Vietnam, but there's ample room for improvement. The action scenes aren't quite as brilliant as those in Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War, but Clancy fans will find plenty to admire. Horner's improbable survival of a 150-m.p.h. near-crash in Libya in 1962 belongs in a Tom Clancy film. --Tim Appelo
Book Description
The second in an extraordinary series of nonfiction books by the #1 bestselling author--a look deep into the art of war as seen through the eyes of four of America's outstanding commanders.
Written with armor and infantry General Fred Franks, Jr., Into the Storm won Clancy unanimous praise for its masterful blend of military history, biography, tactical analysis, and unique insight into the art and practice of leadership. Every Man a Tiger soars above it, into the sky.
General Chuck Horner was the right man in the right place at the right time. Combining a broad experience of all aspects of aerial warfare with a deep respect for and knowledge of Arab culture, Horner commanded the U.S. and allied air assets during Desert Shield and Desert Storm--the forces of a dozen nations--and was responsible for the design and execution of one of the most devastating air campaigns in history. Never before has the Gulf air war and its planning, a process filled with controversy and stormy personalities, been revealed in such rich, provocative detail. Beyond that, however, Every Man a Tiger is the story of two revolutions: of how a service damaged by Vietnam reinvented itself through vision, determination, and brutal-ly hard work--in Horner's words, "We had to learn how to be an Air Force all over again"--and of how war changed fundamentally in the last decade of this century, not only in the new dominance of air power but in all aspects. It is a story of speed, accuracy, efficiency, decentralization, information, and initiative, as well as smoke, fear, courage, and blood. It is a front-row seat to a man, an institution, a war, and a way of war that together make this an instant classic of military history. Index.
Customer Reviews:
Horner 1, Clancy 0.......2007-03-22
I recomend this book because of Gen. Horner and in spite of Mr. Clancy. (I think "The Hunt For Red October" is great but its been down-hill from there...) I'm sure Mr. Clancy brought organizing talent and expertise in formatting chapters, paragraphs and pages to this book, but I felt I could tell when Horner, or Clancy, was the primary writer, and I'd have been happier with the General's own voice the whole time.
General Horner comes across as a full character, with a story to tell. I'd rate his part 5 stars.
The "there I was" parts about planning and carrying-out the air-war in Desert Shield and Desert Storm are illuminating, and the description of the troubled USAF trying to find purpose, meaning and funding, after Viet Nam, are interesting. But the heart of the book for me are Horner's two tours in Viet Nam. Actually, in Thailand, but over Viet Nam when flying. By the end of his first tour, Horner realizes that the USA, his country, and the USAF, his service, doesn't actually want to win in Viet Nam, and isn't willing to do what it takes to win. Its not the left wing media, or the protesters, its the chain of command, from Johnson down, and he makes this point directly.
And then he goes back for a second tour, flying Wild Weasel missions at great personal risk. Why? He says its because this was "the war he had". He doesn't dwell on it, but it seems that having signed up, and being willing to serve, so far, he's willing to risk his life to do what he's been trained to do, in the persuit of foolish, pointless, even counter-productive things. I'd say immoral things, once you know you can't win, many might disagree.
But there, in a real officer's words, more or less, is why our nation must take (more) care in choosing its leaders, and give great thought to its citizens in uniform, volunteer or otherwise. People, all people, our people, are amazing, and they will try to do every job they are given to the best of their ability.
Give them a stupid job that hasn't been well thought out and they will die trying to make it happen. If its a military job and it involves killing, they'll kill. Not from blood lust or to be evil, but because that's what they've been asked to do.
Its no use blaming the soldiers- after a very brief time at war, soldiers have more in common with each other, with the soldiers of the other side, than they do with the folks at home. Its the leadership, which, in a democracy, is US, which is responsible. We cannot casually send out the Marines, or the 82nd Airborne, or the carrier battle group, and assume all is well. We have to be damn sure we know what we want before we ask our service people to risk their lives for it. They may do what we ask, and it may not work, it may not be the right thing, it may not be what we actually want.
This book is rather technical (about the level of "The Naval Institute Procedings", NY Times or Aviation Week, more so than "Air Force Review" or one of Clancy's books. Having a background in the subject helps, having an interest in the subject is a must.
Its hard to keep reading when Horner steps out and Clancy lets his fingers sing on the keyboard. But its worth it, at least through the first third, and after that, its like "Day of the Jackel"- you know how it ends, but you want to know this version anyway. Skim if you have to.
This is a far *better* book than Richard Hallinon's "Storm over Iraq" (Hallinon, the "Offical USAF Historian", is too rah-rah, with too little critical thinking or self awareness) and provides an interesting 50,000 foot view to contrast with, for example, "Warthogs", the first-person, 15,000 feet and under, stories of A-10 pilots & squadrons.
Every Man A Tiger.......2007-03-19
Great book. General Chuck Horner is a real character and I enjoyed his insights immensely. Tom Clancy does a great job explaining military technology although some of his graphs' Xs & Ys axises needed to be labeled. Overall a great book. I enjoyed it more that "Enter the Storm" which was based on Fred Franks.
A Warrior's Unique Story.......2006-06-01
The best part of Every Man a Tiger is the compelling voice of General Horner revealing the inside story of a revolutionary air campaign as it unfolded. General Horner, the man, the tiger, allows the reader to climb inside his head as he choreographs the human aspect of critical air operations while managing a multi-national coalition, freely admitting that the burden of failure rested with him. Indeed, destiny put the right man at the right place at the right time. All his prior training, assignments, and experiences in Vietnam and the Middle East coalesced during Desert Shield and Desert Storm. In future conflicts, we will need tough, compassionate, selfless, military leaders like Chuck Horner if we are to overcome the daunting challenges that lay ahead. Read it.
Great book for those in the armed forces.......2005-04-25
I've read other negative reviews on this book but it was definitely worth the read, and I'd highly suggest it to anyone in the armed forces or anyone intrigued by their inner workings. I doubt someone with little interest in the Air Force would really get much out of this book but, like I said, if you are in the armed forces you'll love it and it'll make a lot of sense to you.
Excellent.......2003-04-16
This is on the U.S Air Force's list of recommended reading for a reaon. If you have an interest in what the USAF is and how it does what it does, this book is a must.

Book Description
A "hen frigate," traditionally, was any ship with the captain's wife on board. Hen frigates were miniature worlds -- wildly colorful, romantic, and dangerous. Here are the dramatic, true stories of what the remarkable women on board these vessels encountered on their often amazing voyages: romantic moonlit nights on deck, debilitating seasickness, terrifying skirmishes with pirates, disease-bearing rats, and cockroaches as big as a man's slipper. And all of that while living with the constant fear of gales, hurricanes, typhoons, collisions, and fire at sea. Interweaving first-person accounts from letters and journals in and around the lyrical narrative of a sea journey, maritime historian Joan Druett brings life to these stories. We can almost feel for ourselves the fear, pain, anger, love, and heartbreak of these courageous women. Lavishly illustrated, this breathtaking book transports us to the golden age of sail.
Customer Reviews:
Hen Frigates.......2002-01-09
This is an outstanding non-fiction book so alive with detailed stories about women aboard ships that it reads like a novel. It discloses not only women's stories about long journeys, shipwrecks, and daily experiences on board, but how women served as navigators across seas around the world. A splendid source on 19th century sailing.
Interesting ride along.............2001-02-28
"Hen Frigates" is such a specific book, one can hardly imagine the time and research it must have taken to pull it all together. Ms. Druett has compiled list after list, diary excerpt after diary excerpt etc. to transport us into days past. Even though the time periods vary with the womens accounts, the stories all seem to ring the same. Each wife suffered through the same torments of life on the sea, but also in time relished with her husband. This is an interesting fact as husbands could sometimes be away for three years at a time with ittle or no contact home. By allowing the wives to share in the shipping/whaling experience, their marriage became all the stronger, or all the weaker in some cases. It is so easy for we in the 21st century to take advantage of all the amenities we use in everyday life, but the brave women portrayed lived as the sailors lived...sparsely. Raising children is difficult enough on land, but to do it on a ship sailing the seven seas, must have proved to be near impossible at times. All in all, a very interesting book on a forgotten subject.
Fascinating chronicle of womens' history/Victorian mores.......1999-06-08
This book is a compendium of the experiences of 19th century women who spent much of their lives on board sailing ships. Largely invisible in naval chronicles, a not inconsiderable number of wives and daughters accompanied merchant captains of that time. These globe-hopping women and girls led highly unconventional lives. They faced everything from abject boredom to dire peril from pirates, mutineers and the loss of loved ones from illness and injury - yet managed to overcome almost every challenge.
The book is organized into broad categories of experience, and uses the womens' own words from letters and diaries to tell their stories. There are lots of thumbnail illustrations of shipboard life, too. All in all this is a fascinating peek at Victorian conventionality and how far women could go in stretching it while remaining firmly trussed within its bounds.

Change the Way You View Biology.......2005-07-10
This is one of the most original biosystematics book available. It takes a completely different perspective from any other. Until now, the majority of creationist books on the market have been mostly criticisms of Darwin. While some of these have been quite good, there have been few books of substance that answers the question, "how do you do biology from a creationist perspective?"
Rather than being critical of other approaches, this book sets out to describe how scriptural biology can completely change your perspective on biological systems. At its essence, this is a creationist biosystematics book. But even more, it shows how a believing God transforms how a scientist views the world.
The start of the book is slow, but it gets progressively more interesting. The terminology is a bit wierd, but this isn't abnormal for systematics. The opening chapters present the kinds of classifications used as well as the kinds of evidences used for classifications.
It then presents statistical methods for creationist classification, including BDIST and ANOPA, both of which are statistical methods for finding patterns of sameness and difference between species.
The end of the book is the best, covering special topics of interest, including biological imperfection, biodiversity, and biogeography.
My favorite chapter of the whole book was the biodiversity chapter, which discusses the diversification mechanisms which creationists believe are at play. The most interesting of these is genomic modularity -- the hypothesis that genomes are preprogrammed to rearrange themselves in response to specific environmental stresses. Several very good examples are given.
To give you a little spoiler, one of the things that this book does is set up both continuity and discontinuity as real, fundamental features of biology, and sets up ways of analyzing them from a unique, creationist perspective.
While not being a perfect book, this is a must-read for anyone who wants to know, "what is it that creationists believe". If you are a creationist, this book is a must-read. If you are an evolutionist and simply want to know, "what on earth do creationists think" this is also the book for you.
