Book Description
Hardbound. Sedimentary basins contain most of the extant record of the earth's history, and they provide us with most of our earth-sourced raw materials. Therefore their study is both scientifically and economically important. This book gives the first comprehensive coverage of sedimentary basins in the New Zealand region. Comprising 21 chapters by 32 authors, it discusses sedimentary basins ranging in age from Permian to Quaternary. The chapters are process- and topic-oriented. Three distinct basin-forming periods are covered: 1) Permian through Jurassic arc-related terranes; 2) Mid-Cretaceous through Oligocene extensional basins; 3) Neogene convergent margin basins.
Resource scientists investigating sedimentary basins and all researchers working on basin-related topics will find this volume of interest.

Product Description
HOLLYWOOD HUSSEIN: HOW THE U.S. >REALLY
< CAPTURED SADDAM George W. Bush has been keeping a real big secret from America. Texas big! And we're not talking about his secret crush on Paris Hilton. No, what Bush really doesn't want you to know is how Hollywood helped him capture Saddam Hussein. Shhh. Bush doesn't want you to know he recruited tabloid journalist Tom Peppers and a rag-tag team of paparazzi to do the job the CIA could not. He doesn't want you to know he hired sexy celubutante London Marriott to distract America. Bush especially doesn't want the public to know he turned to Arnold Schwarzenegger and a reality-TV guru to create the first presidentially produced reality show, Who Wants To Be An American Hero. Well, too bad, W! Hollywood Hussein uncovers it all. In Hollywood Hussein, author Ken Baker presents phone transcripts, classified documents and his very own interiews with the key players in Bush's top-secret "Operation Hollywood." Indeed, Hollywood Hussein reveals the previously untold story behind Saddam's curiously Hollywood-like capture in December 2003 from a spider hole in Iraq. The White House in Hollywood Hussein is one where the president uses weekly magazine sales figures - rather than scientific polls - to guage popular opinion, where the president spends more time plotting propaganda with Karl Rove than planning policy with Colin Powell, and where unlikely heroes emerge to save America from itself. Hollywood Hussein's hilariously scathing depiction of the events surrounding Saddam's capture not only will have you laughing, but the book's shocking final twist will also make you question everything you see on the news, not to mention the next thing you hear out of a politician's mouth.
Customer Reviews:
A Masterpiece of Mirthful Whimsy.......2005-10-07
Hollywood Hussein is a deliciously irreverent romp into the cloak-and-dagger world of espionage and diplomacy, with a healthy dose of Hollywood thrown into the mix just for fun. I enjoyed the raucous and funny story line, and recommend this book to star watchers, political junkies, spy groupies, and anyone who wants to take a trip into the labyrinth of pop culture and world affairs at the same time.
Book Description
The 3rd to the 6th centuries saw the collapse of the classical Mediterranean civilization and the emergence of new states in western Europe based on the Germanic warrior society. This book focuses particularly on the men who made up the retinues of the Germanic warlords who carved kingdoms out of the carcass of the West Roman Empire. Although sources are scarce, Simon MacDowall constructs a convincing picture, using evidence from Roman historians, German archaeology and Anglo-Saxon poetry. The warriors' society, hierarchy, training, equipment, appearance, tactics and style of fighting are all examined, building a comprehensive portrait of the Germanic warrior in this period.

Germanic Warrior.......2007-04-08
These are some of my favorite McBride plates, depicting not only Germanic warriors in battle, but also treatment of the wounded, a soldier paying homage, a feast, the making of weapons, and the 376 crossing of the Danube by the future Visigoths. The text is also very good, not only for the information itself but how it is presented. McDowall gives a realistic portrait of the typical 'barbarian' warrior of this period, putting the reader in his shoes during his recruitment, training, combat experience, and personal life. Overall, this book breathes life into a turbulent and beautiful people who have tragically been remembered only as hairy savages and destroyers of civilization.
So thats what Beowolf looked like!.......2005-07-02
Some good text but its the illustrations that led me to buy this book. If you want to get an idea of what the Guys who took over Western Europe looked like then here you go!
Get it for the pictures.......2003-07-13
The text is interesting, but what sets the book apart is the illustrations. I am a fan of the Beowulf epic, and these drawings help me imagine how Beowulf the Geat might have appeared. The king on his throne receiving a new thane could have been Danish king Hrothgar, in a rundown throne room next to what was left of his meadöhall, receiving Beowulf!
A Useful Overview.......2003-06-19
It's always difficult to cover a large subject in the brief but effective Osprey format, but MacDowell has made a useful addition to his volumes on the Late Roman cavalry and infantry to give an overview of the later Germanic warriors. The author is faced by twin difficulties: (i) the evidence is often sparse and fragmentary and (ii) the Germanic tribes differed markedly from each other in many ways and changed and adapted over the centuries. Generalisations are thus difficult, and what may be true in relation to a noble Ostrogothic cavalryman are unlikely to be true for their Frankish infantry contemporaries. Despite this, MacDowell compresses a large amount of information into a useful book.
THe volume covers obvious territory in relation to the early Germanic warrior social structure, which forms a good context for the beginner or general reader. The sections on training and tactics go some way toward modifying the Hollywood image of "screaming savage barbarians", with MacDowell emphasising the influence of centuries of contact with Rome on the organisation of these warbands. Similarly, the convergence between the equipment used by the Germanics and those used by their Roman foes and allies also creates a very different image of these "invaders".
The section on the "experience of battle" gives an immediacy and vitality to what could be a dry catalogue of ancient fragments and archaeological evidence. As ever, Angus McBride's evocative watercolours bring the evidence to life, with several pictures, such as that of the blond Germanic lord in late Roman costume, flanked by his comitatus guards and receiving homage from a new retainer in his (rather run-down) Roman villa telling a story while illustrating some artefacts.
Overall, this isn't a perfect book and the text can be thin in places (since this isn't really MacDowell's area of specialisation), but in terms of context and as a starting point for newcomers to this area, this book is a good contribution.
highly welcome.......1999-06-04
A valuable addition to the Osprey Elite series. Author Simon MacDowall covers the Germanic Warriors from 236 to 568 AD. The chapters: Chronology -- The warrior society -- Leadership and hierarchy -- Training -- Equipment and appearance -- The warrior on campaign -- The experience of battle. The book is beautifully illustrated by the well-known artist Angus McBride.

Product Description
This book describes a new way of seeing the world we live in which offers greatly increased information for many fields of study. It provides a framework for understanding many different mysteries of everything from commerce and advertising to the functions of brain tissue. It is a very simplifying and powerful theory that also explains the origins of all human religious impulses. In this book, a veil is being lifted on the future. You will never look at the world in the same way again.
Customer Reviews:
The Most Stupidest Thing I Ever Read!!!.......2006-07-07
This is by far the most stupidest book ever written. I think most reviewers have already said what there is to say. This book is about HATRED and nothing more. I also read the author's review on the "Journey Of Man" here in Amazon, where he said 99.5% of all the arts and music came from Europe. As a historian I can only laugh at this statement! - Asian countries like India & China were the cultural centres of the world. India is the bithplace of language and music. It is from India where Europe learned that it is a good idea to have a bath more than once a year!! This man surely knows nothing about history and this book proves he knows nothing about science either!
All human beings were black once. Our color differences come from adapting to various climates. And if this man hates black people, he is not a human being!!!!
Read This Thoughtfully.......2006-06-30
Half way into this book I wasn't sure if it was the work of a crackpot or a genius. Upon finishing it I concluded it was much more the latter. It is truly unlike any book I've ever read. It was difficult to read, but there was always a sense of something big emerging. Somewhat distracting were the author's claims of profundity. Though perhaps true, they were off-putting to others to whom I showed the book. Two other distractions, especially to those I tried to interest in this book, were the numerous typographical errors and amateurish cover design. I suspect that the controversial nature of the author's thesis precluded publication by a major publisher whose budget would have taken care of these problems. This is all the more reason to read it. It's hard to summarize the ideas because they are presented on such a large scale. Yet, I found myself almost trembling with excitement as, for instance, the conflict between religion and science was resolved in a unique way. There was nothing at all in the book that sounded like hate. Often, however, the author spoke of love, especially love of truth. My sense is that this man has paid a price for saying what he thinks. My hope is that his book will gain the wider readership it deserves.
Racism Unchecked?.......2006-06-20
How can amazon.com allow "authors" like stephen e. romer to publish books under their banner. this is pure racism at work there is absolutely no other way of seeing, unless you are ignorant. i, for one, am ashamed at the existence of this person among humans.
Book of Lies under cover of psuedo science.......2005-04-06
This book was basically unreadable. It was simply white supremacy wrapped up in fake and unprovable science. I can't believe this idiot has a degree in anything much less in nueroscience, probably doesn't. I noticed that he loves to talk about "white power" in his reviews, he is pushing a hateful agenda and not true science. Run do not walk away from this piece of trash.
Like Gravity: Unity and Meaning are Intrinsic to the Cosmos .......2004-09-02
The first chapter was somewhat difficult to read. I found that this was so initially because the author talked about so many seemingly disconnected and unrelated things that I was unsure what to make of the book and why he was talking about them.
Only as I read some more, did I see it all come coherently together, and as the many examples that he provided eventually built more evidence for his theory of a monolithic Natural Law that solves many problems in various divisions within science and religion and language and symbolism and within social and racial issues.
Mr. Romer discusses the historical and "politically-incorrect" fact of almost 100% White European/American supremacy in their own Modern Western Civilization's cultures and inventions, in their scientific accomplishments, and in their technology and medicine.
Romer then tells us just why this is important to the world and to the relationship to the informational-based purposes that are inherent to our own continued Human survival and that is also true for all species and for all of life.
There is a coherence and a natural hidden force behind our everyday world that allows us to recognize patterns, metaphors, analogies, symbols, and to develop languages based upon our experiences and consciousness.
This coherent and natural hidden force is slowly revealed by Romer in his many original examples and in his many colorful illustrations.
Reading this book will be quite a mind-expanding journey for the open-minded and for any of those capable of free and independent thought.
An April 2004 issue of Scientific American had a cover story on glial cells in the brain that echos many of the ideas in the glial cell chapter of the book.
This fact alone reveals the revolutionary and cutting-edge nature of what Romer explores in his book.
This also gives some actual scientific credibility to some of his radical ideas since these very same ideas are now being backed-up by much of the more recent and emerging scientific evidence through research.
Big changes are coming soon and based upon this new knowledge and Romer is one of the first to see it.
I do highly recommend that you read this book
by Romer for your own self and to discover these
recently uncovered scientific and religious insights
into these previously-hidden Natural Laws of the Cosmos.
Book Description

Revised edition includes material on minimal surfaces in relativity and topology, and updated work on Plateau's problem and on isoperimetric inequalities. 1969 edition.
Customer Reviews:
Accessibility, Understandability to Balance Theorem Proving.......2003-05-08
In my experience accessibility and understandability have to balance theorem proving.
This book is well on it's way to becoming a modern classic even if it is somewhat dated
in it's material. Robert Osserman is recognized as a great teacher of mathematics
by many in the mathematics community. But his approach has come between
the seeker of knowledge and his goal of understanding and mastery of the subject.
It is not his fault as in a peer review he would be generally
rewarded for his approach as he has been in his paper
publishing. But I can see grad students rushing to resell this book
as it has a limited amount of useful reference information
and very few of the actual definitions of the curves talked about.
The references are classic and many of the people are dead or retired by now.
It is access to the actual formulations for the minimal surfaces and explanations that
help in understanding the material not by theorem proving ,
but by visualization and explanation that are needed.
In that: this book fails. But compared to many other such mathematics books , it is actually superior!
A classical source.......2000-09-22
Osserman's survey is both an excellent starting point for beginners and a reference for some interesting problems in the subject (although it was written some years ago!). Weiesrtrass' classical representation of minimal surfaces, their topology...how can all these be in such a small book?
