Althought the book recieved was in new condition(as advertised), It was linked to it's purchase through the 13th edition textbook which I also purchased(via another seller). The Working Papers recieved were for the 12th edition, I needed the 13th. In the future I will make it a point to ask any seller the book edition if they fail to mention it in the adversement.

        Book Description

Holdsworth, William S., and C.W. Vickers. The Law of Succession, Testamentary and Intestate. Oxford: B.H. Blackwell, 1899. xiv, 311 pp. Reprinted 2004 by the Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. ISBN-13: 978-1-58477-471-6. ISBN-10: 1-58477-471-1. Cloth. $125. * Intended as an introductory treatise for law students, this treatise serves as an excellent introduction and a useful reference. And as one would expect from a book co-written by Holdsworth [1871-1944], it goes beyond the law of his day to analyze its historical development. In addition to a valuable introductory chapter on the history of succession, the authors enrich their discussion in the main text with observations on the ways its principles developed over time in response to particular conditions. Their functionalist view, which owes much to Maitland's example, enabled them to create a sophisticated text that avoids the pitfalls of contemporary formalistic and "scientific" treatises.

                          Book Description

Research in the field of shock physics and ballistic impact has always been intimately tied to progress in development of facilities for accelerating projectiles to high velocity and instrumentation for recording impact phenomena. The chapters of this book, written by leading US and European experts, cover a broad range of topics and address researchers concerned with questions of material behaviour under impulsive loading and the equations of state of matter, as well as the design of suitable instrumentation such as gas guns and high-speed diagnostics. Applications include high-speed impact dynamics, the inner composition of planets, syntheses of new materials and materials processing. Among the more technologically oriented applications treated is the testing of the flight characteristics of aeroballistic models and the assessment of impacts in the aerospace industry.

                          Book Description

In the far northern parts of the world, near and above the Arctic Circle, summer days are very long. In Barrow, Alaska, for example, the sun rises in May and sets 83 days later, in early August. During this time, the sun shines all through the night. People call it the midnight sun. When the midnight sun is shining, people and animals stay active even at night. This sweet poetic narrative, illustrated by award-winner Jeremiah Trammell, showcases the many pleasures of this unique time as a little girl dances, fishes, plays games, watches moose and fox, and communes with family and nature.

                          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A picturebook about a young girl living in Alaska who looks forward to the longest day of the year - the solstice.......2005-09-12

Featuring a skillfully written text in the form of a kind of prose poetry by Deb Vanasse, which is perfectly framed by the full color artwork of Jeremiah Trammell, Under Alaska's Midnight Sun is a picturebook about a young girl living in Alaska who looks forward to the longest day of the year - the solstice. During this time the sun never sets on Alaska, people and animals are reluctant to sleep, and the midnight sun shines brightly. The playfully exuberant illustrations are the perfect complement to this read-aloud storybook that will introduce young readers to how different day and night can be at far northern latitudes.

                          5 out of 5 stars Charmingly whimsical.......2005-07-03

This story brings me back to childhood and brings back forgotten memories of how fun it was to stay up late with my family as a child. In this story you follow a little girl and her little brother on a journey through a world of majestic sceneries and wildlife which is brought to life by Trammell's beautiful paintings.
I beleive that a succesful children's book needs to inspire a childs imagination and keep them interested and involved from cover to cover, this book does all of these and has my highest recomendation for children of all ages and adults alike.

                                  Book Description

Does love exist? Is this emotion—this feeling that has inspired and dazzled humankind throughout history—in fact provable? This is the question that baffles Lewis Maxen. A doubting romantic, Lewis hopes that love is real, and he thinks he has found his true soul mate in Jamie Hollister. If only he could be sure.

Suddenly he has the very means within his grasp to prove the existence of love and seizes the opportunity presented. The result is not only a lively adventure but a meditation on the nature of love itself.

A love story with a twist, this will appeal to anyone interested in the humor of the human condition.

An instant southern Oregon classic. Reeder captures the magic
and feel of the Rogue valley in a story that is both far reaching and deeply personal. Mixing humor and heartbreak in a narrative that is eloquent without being pretentious, this is simply a great read. Anyone who grew up in the 70's or 80's should be able to appreciate the mix of angst and warmth that Reeder puts to the page in this hilarious, well crafted novel. I loved it!

                                    Book Description

First mentioned by name in AD 297, the Picts inhabited Northern Britain from the end of the 3rd century AD to the 9th. They rose to power in the devastation following Emperor Septimus Severus's repression of the Caledonians in AD 208, and dominated Northern Britain for over 500 years, before vanishing mysteriously. The Picts represent a high point of Celtic civilisation, remaining free and unconquered beyond the borders of the Roman world, and rising to become the first barbarians to form a recognisable 'nation'. This title takes a detailed look at their origins, and examines Pictish heroic and warrior society, covering education and training, appearance and equipment, the status of women, and the experience of battle.

As with all of osprey's Men-at-Arms books, this one is well written and jam packed with useful information. The only problem I see is the art work. Every Osprey book I've read so far has amazing illustrations. This one however seems as though it was thown to a random staff member who likes to draw. The illustrations seem much more like japanese anime than anything else. It doesnt seem like any of the images were taken seriously and it was hard for me to take them seriously seeing as I felt like I was watching an episode of Pokeman. This aside, its still a great booklet and I highly recommend it.

A fine book. The author uses a combination of Roman historians, Welsh and Gaelic mythology, and archaeology to paint a believable picture of the fearsome warrior culture today called 'Picts'. He examines their origins as a people, the origin of their name (it may well be a tribal name in their own tongue, rather than from Latin 'painted'), and their history with the late Romans, the Anglo-Saxons, the Gaels, the Norse, and the Scots who finally assimilated them. The text also details the daily life of the noble warrior, the warband on campaign, and the philosophies by which the Celtic warrior in general lived. What little is known of Pictish armor, costume, weaponry, and battle tactics is also detailed. The plates, by Wayne Reynolds are excellent and do a fine job of supporting the text.
Plate A shows a Caledonian warrior at the time of Septimius Severus' Scottish campaigns of the beginning of the 3rd Century. The Caledonians are often said to be the same as the Picts, but appear to have been a Brythonic-speaking people (similar to the southern Britons) that were assimilated by the Picts
Plate B shows characters from Irish myth recreated as Pictish warriors. These are Chulainn and Scathach training at the latter's School of War, while other champions and students look on.
Plate C shows a Pictish boat, like they may have used to carry out piratical raids
Plate D shows a Pictish raid on Hadrian's wall in the 4th Century AD. Several heavily tattooed Picts are shown in combat with Romano-British soldiers. Some of the Celts are also shown fighting naked in the traditional manner, and one is using a lasso to pull a defender off the wall.
Plate E shows different Pictish weapons, swords, bucklers, axes, and a spear.
Plate F gives us two warriors of the later Pictish period, a noble horse-warrior in scale armor, and a common warrior with a pike and buckler. The illustrator illustrated most of his Picts, even the later ones, with swirling tatooes on at least their lower legs.
Plate G shows the 'Law of the Innocents'; a Pictish warrior-woman was killed in battle with Northumbrians, and upon the sight of her child sobbing at her breast, the mother of the Abbot of Iona forced him to pass a law in which women were forbidden from going to war-a custom that had been very common in northern Britain.
Plate H shows Pictish pikemen in combat with the horsemen of Strathclyde, while some Pictish horse-warriors ride around the left flank throwing spears at the enemy.
Both the text and plates in this book are highly detailed and exciting, and are highly recommended for anyone interested in this fierce warrior society.

This is a typical Osprey book. A great introduction to a specific topic. It has many color illustrations and maps. Not many books written about the Picts. This is a good introduction to the style of warfare in Great Britain toward the end of the Roman Empire. I like these books because they give you a general background and then suggestions for further reading. The book is only 64 pages so it will only take an afternoon to read it. Very little detail, but enough info to get you started and give you the ability to talk about the subject. The following is an "About This Book" quote from the Osprey website which is not included on the Amazon.com site. It is helpful. Mathematical Snapshots is a wonderful excursion into the mind of a mathematician. It answers a question that was asked of the author "You claim to be a mathematician; well, what does one do all day when one is a mathematician?" This book explores games, the computation of shortest paths, why two soap bubbles blown from the same pipe are different sizes, how to pursue another boat on the open water, how to color maps, the simplest forms of solid objects, mobius strips, where to locate schools, the ideal musical scale, and many, many others. Each topic is presented in a short, concise paragraph along with a diagram or picture of explanation. The author asks the reader to supply answers and reasoning. It is readily readable by those with mathematical inclination (even if they can no longer `push' the numbers) and provides hours of enjoyment and expansion of the mind.

When the first edition of Ivars Peterson's The Mathematical Tourist was published in 1988, the New York Times called it "a rich array of ideas, drawing on virtually every branch of mathematics and bunging in plenty of late-breaking developments to boot." Now Peterson has expanded this popular book to feature another decade of mathematical progress, including new sections on crystal structure, string theory, mathematicians' use of computers, chaos theory, and Fermat's Last Theorem. Most of the other sections have been reworked and reworded as well, and there are many new illustrations. One thing that has not changed is the clarity of Peterson's writing and his almost unparalleled ability to make mathematical ideas themselves interesting, without focusing on the lives and personalities of mathematicians. Martin Gardner called the first edition "a travel guide that the professional mathematician will read with as much excitement and pleasure as the veriest amateur ... a masterpiece of popular exposition," and this second edition is no less. --Mary Ellen Curtin

                                      Book Description

In the first edition of The Mathematical Tourist, renowned science journalist Ivars Peterson took readers on an unforgettable tour through the sometimes bizarre, but always fascinating, landscape of modern mathematics. Now the journey continues in a new, updated edition that includes all the latest information on mathematical proofs, fractals, prime numbers, and chaos, as well as new material on* the relationship between mathematical knots and DNA* how computers based on quantum logic can significantly speed up the factoring of large composite numbers* the relationship between four-dimensional geometry and physical theories of the nature of matter* the application of cellular automata models to social questions and the peregrinations of virtual ants* a novel mathematical model of quasicrystals based on decagon-shaped tilesBlazing a trail through rows of austere symbols and dense lines of formulae, Peterson explores the central ideas behind the work of professional mathematicians-- how and where their pieces of the mathematical puzzle fit in, the sources of their ideas, their fountains of inspiration, and the images that carry them from one discovery to another.

Peterson does a good job of covering many mathemaical concpts in a well-paced narrative. This is an enjoyable book to read, even for those who don't like math. The author wisely steers clear of lenghthy equations and problems, and takes the time to lead the reader through the concepts in a way that doesn't require a background in math. Anyone with an inquisitive mind would appreciate this book.

5 out of 5 stars Take the Tour.......2004-01-02

Let me start off by saying that this is not a work for the layman or the mentally lazy. It deals with several outstanding mathematical issues in so far as they relate to our understanding of the universe. The writing is erudite, refined and continually interesting. Subjects as far-ranging as knot theory (I didn't know it existed), fractals, prime numbers, multi-dimensions, shapes, hyperspace - it's all here with a large number of illustrations and drawings including several color plates of fractals produced by computer.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful tour across the mathematical spectrum..........2003-04-11

Get this updated edition even if you have the paperback 1988 edition. There are quite a few updated topics in this edition. While I still prefer the four volume Newmann classic, "World Of Mathematics", this book gives a fast but full overview of the subject.

Beginning with the world of numbers one is enchanted chapter by chapter into the labryinth. Some effort is required on the reader's part but that is rewarded in full measure. It is something to ponder the sheer beauty of ideas and proofs. Patterns and their "invention" surprisingly correspond to aspects of nature.

The presentation here is excellent. I found this book a great joy to read. While much that is presented here I have read before, the work still gives me further insight on things that I missed. This book is a gem.

5 out of 5 stars A great tour of the World of Mathematics.......2001-11-21

The journey begins.Attention Passengers! We first arrive at Numeralis..

What a way to start the journey to the world of Mathematics. You open the book and start reading it.True to the title he takes you to a guided tour into the world of Mathematics considering each pillar of Mathematics as a country on its own.
I have a read a four Volume series on the World of Mathematics by Newmann and I did wonder how beautifully the Mathematical areas with its own *Scenic beauty* has been described. But when I read this one,Yes ! I did get a feeling of having travelled to Mathematics World visited each place and had a good insight into each one.
Ivars Peterson starts the journey by first visiting the Number World. He names this as the "Prime pursuit" and then slowly into the *theory of mathematical spaces* -topology and minimal surfaces.Wait!I hear you asking if it is all about pure mathematics.Certainly not, then and there to make the passengers feel comfortable ,just like a real guide ,he introduces the usefulness of the concepts in the emperical world.Be it quantum computing-the century's scientific thirst or the age-old yet golden primes ,the journey is very smooth ,no harsh surprises what one would term as mathematics of the mathematicians. This one is for the layman..A cool and lucid entry and exit in the world of Mathematics.
After reading this book you will wonder,"have I visited so many *places* " but you will feel that you have learnt so many Mathematical stuffs, what this world is all about and mind you ,all these without even the slightest fatigue:)

A must read Popular Maths Book!

                                      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Guide.......2001-04-18

Not every topic in here is appealing to me--for example, I loved the chaos, fractals, and prime number sections and skimmed the sections on higher dimensions and topology. But the point is that Peterson gives a skilled description of each area of mathematics. There are enough pictures / illustrations and intuitive explanations / examples for a layman, but also enough "real" mathematics to inform one who has a decent background in math. And of course, the additional resources listed for each chapter would allow one to more formally pursue a topic that captures one's interest.

Overall a very fun read. And Peterson's brief treatment of the clash of computers with mathematical theorems is thought-provoking.

I have NOT read the updated edition yet but the original was quite good; surely the updated only improves upon it.
