Book Description
Get refreshed with Horngren/Sundem/Stratton's Introduction to Management Accounting, 13th Edition. This best-selling book offers a relevant,
real-world decision-making approach to management accounting. Readers develop a solid understanding of costs and cost behavior and the use of cost information for planning and control decisions, not just inventory valuation. This book emphasizes the notion that “You need to understand the business first, before you can understand the accounting of business.”
Updated to cover the most recent methods in management accounting, topics include: cost behavior, cost management systems, and activity-based costing; marketing and product decisions; the master budget; flexible budget and variance analysis; management control systems; capital budgeting; cost allocation; andjob-costing and process-costing systems; basic accounting concepts, techniques, and conventions; corporate financial reports and basic financial statements; and consolidated financial statements.
An excellent reference resource for managerial accountants.
Customer Reviews:
No university/college should use this.............2007-08-19
I had to use this book for an online course while earning my bachelor's degree. This book was horrible. This group of 3 authors did not do a good job. The ideas and points did not run smoothly together from one point to another. It seems like the 3 authors did not work very close together to make sure their ideas connected and related directly with each other's ideas. It was as if the authors went from talking about point A, skipping all the way to point F, then going to point C, then back to point F, etc. etc. Their ideas did not flow in an understandable sequence. I also agree about the examples. The examples were no help and they were not thorough examples of material that you would run into the real-world. The examples needed much more details in them.
Huge waste of money.......2007-07-06
Horngren makes a notoriously dry subject even worse. It is filled with long winded verse and practically devoid of dynamic examples. Accounting is something that 'works' and can be worked out. It's best learned when applied to real world situations...this book aims to have you memorize boring definitions and then support those definitions with scarce examples. Even our professor said he's been lobbying to get this book out of my school's curriculum...too bad that didn't happen BEFORE I came along.
Introduction to Management Accounting.......2007-02-19
This book was not at all what I expected and was not very useful.
Introdution to management accouting.......2006-09-02
Very good. Cover is a little worn. Some pages have been written by pencil.
Used in MBA program - Intro to Accounting.......2006-04-06
I have had experience with accounting and found this book to be fairly basic. However, if you are a beginner with no knowledge of accounting, this is a good textbook. I read one of the other reviews about how there is a bunch of useless junk on each page and while this is partially true, it would be UNBEARABLE to read if there wasn't this so called "junk" on every page. Overall a good textbook that I will keep around as a reference for accounting basics.

clear narrative of concepts.......2006-12-25
Leach explains how to do serious molecular modelling. Naturally, this has to be done by computer simulations. The text is a blend of the physical principles and equations needed, and how to implement as code. For example, there is the Lennard-Jones potential for intermolecular attraction. But modelling using this often also involves a cutoff. The problem with the latter is that it can create discontinuities in both the potential and the force [which is the derivate of the former]. You can shown how to suitably modify matters to avoid these complications.
Another familiar potential is the Morse potential, used to model bond stretching. Empirical but very useful, and in general quite adequate for most simulations.
The text even has an example of modelling a high temperature superconductor. Partly to enhance the relevance of the narrative for practical applications.
Comprehensive and self-contained.......2005-07-01
In this book, Andrew Leach has done a great job in putting in almost every important concept, sundry as well as significant, from the field of computational chemistry and molecular modeling. From basic but very useful concepts like atom types, Z matrices, and force field parametrization, to advanced topics like Ewald Sums and Low Mode Monte Carlo conformational searching, Leach gives due importance to everything. The discussions on quantum mechanics in the first few chapters are moderate on the mathematics without shying away from it, and provide just the right amount of detail. Later chapters cover the whole gamut of computational techniques, from Molecular Dynamics and Molecular Mechanics, to Moelcular Similarity and QSAR. Examples that are relevant in chemistry and biology are scattered throughout the book and illustrate every key idea. There are many good books for Computational Chemistry and Molecular Modeling, and some are good for a few topics, others for other ones. However, if one wants to get a grip on ALL important topics in the area, I think this is the most comprehensive reference that one can look up.
An excellent overview.......2004-06-04
Good:
This book gives an excellent overview of molecular simulation techniques starting with quantum mechanics ab initio type calculations and going up through molecular dynamics and polymer simulation. It gives a good step up from your standard physical chemistry text (such as Atkins or Chang) to being able to read the literature on modern molecular modelling techniques.
Bad:
The treatment of many methods is somewhat superficial.
The book was first written in 1996 and updated in 2000 - it is starting to get a bit out of date.
Overall I would recommend this as a solid introduction and reference.
The bible.......2003-02-12
If you could choose only one book about molecular modelling - this should be it. Everything is covered, more or less thourough, from ab initio to molecular docking, algorithms, force fields, molecular dynamics, etc. It is well written, but also works well if you want to look up single key words. The book can be read by novices to molecular modelling as well as it is useful for experts. I can highly recommend it.
Review by a molecular tyro.......2002-11-20
I'd like to recommend this book from the perspective of someone who is new to the field. I have only an informal background in chemistry and biology and an undergraduate physics degree that's 20 years old. Mr. Leach works through a broad range of material, from numeric solutions to the quantum equations for a molecule to algorithms for searching through the conformational space. His descriptions have to be concise in order to fit the enormous volume of material he has to cover, yet I found that I had no trouble following along. He often takes a historical approach. I found this effective. I would find myself wandering down blind alleys when examining the early solutions, then read the later art and have a greater appreciation for the problem than if the ultimate answer were presented first. I have been able to use much of the book as a practical guide in my work.
Frankly, I'm amazed that someone with a professional life can find the time to put together a book of this scope.

Book Description
This is the first book of its kind on seismic amplitude inversion in the context of reflection tomography. The aim of the monograph is to advocate the use of ray-amplitude data, separately or jointly with traveltime data, in reflection seismic tomography.
The emphasis of seismic exploration is on imaging techniques, so that seismic section can be interpreted directly as a geological section. In contrast it is perhaps ironic that, in decades of industrial seismology, one major aspect of waveform data that potentially is easier to measure and analyse has generally been ignored. That is, the information content of seismic amplitudes. Perhaps the potential complexity has deterred most researchers from a more thorough investigation of the practical use of seismic amplitude data. The author of this volume presents an authoritative and detailed study of amplitude data, as used in conjunction with traveltime data, to provide better constraints on the variation of seismic wave speed in the subsurface.
One of the fundamental problems in conventional reflection seismic tomography using only traveltime data is the possible ambiguity between the velocity variation and the reflector depth. The inclusion of amplitude data in the inversion may help to resolve this problem because the amplitudes and traveltimes are sensitive to different features of the subsurface model, and thereby provide more accurate information about the subsurface structure and the velocity distribution. An essential goal of this monograph is to make the amplitude inversion method work with real reflection seismic data.

Book Description
At present, there is an increasing interest in the prediction of properties of classical and new materials such as substitutional alloys, their surfaces, and metallic or semiconductor multilayers. A detailed understanding based on a microscopic, parameter-free approach is thus of the utmost importance for future developments in solid state physics and materials science. The purpose of this book is to provide this understanding.
Electronic Structure of Disordered Alloys, Surfaces and Interfaces consists of two major parts. The first explores the theoretical background while the second is devoted to applications. Researchers in solid state theory, surface science and computational materials research will benefit from the book's comprehensive treatment while graduate students will find this text a suitable introduction to these topics.

Book Description
San Francisco's underground unleashes a wild tempest of melancholy and psychodrama on an unsuspecting world. Poets, drag queens, performance artists, musicians, and strippers wander in and out of a yearlong hangover through seedy nightclubs, all-night basement parties, and unexpected revelations. The hapless narrator's evolving relationship with a serious girlfriend combines with deep self-understanding and pain to reveal something true amid the chaos.
Customer Reviews:
A psychedelic rave-up of a novel.......2006-10-14
It might help you to follow the narrative of this novel composed of weird anecdotal episodes if you've altered your consciousness at some point in your life because this book doesn't have a traditional plot line... but there's definitely a story here. Often laugh out loud funny and sometimes just plain creepy and gross, Longhi can turn a phrase on a dime.
Book Description
Civil wars attract much less attention than international wars but they are becoming increasingly common and typically go on for years. Where development succeeds, countries become progressively safer from violent conflict, making subsequent development easier. Where development fails countries can become trapped in a vicious circle: war wrecks the economy and increases the risk of further war. This new World Bank Policy Research Report challenges the belief that civil wars are inevitable and proposes an agenda for global action.
Customer Reviews:
civil war != development.......2006-02-02
These days, when the idea of failed states occupies the minds of many policymakers in the developed world, Collier provides a timely study of how civil war can help bring about a failed state. He studies several decades of civil wars, spread across the world, though primarily focused on Africa. In these wars, we see how the development of those countries was severely stunted. From Liberia to Sudan to Cambodia and other places.
The tragedy of course is that these countries already had parlous economies, prior to the conflicts. Plus, during the wars, conditions naturally worsened.
Quite a thoughtful book. The author and, implicitly, the World Bank, argue that until such wars end, it is futile to seriously contemplate any development policy.

Book Description
Previous volumes in the ambitious series The Making of Modern Freedom
have shown how modern freedom emerged most decisively in a modern form in seventeenth-century England. The present volume looks back in time to address some of the very different concepts, antecedents, and realizations of freedom before the modern era.
Book Description
This book provides a clear, topical and wide-ranging introduction to the idea of "the West." It engages with both Western and non-Western representations and demonstrates that "the West" is not merely a Western idea, but something that many people around the world have long been creating, stereotyping and deploying. Bonnett offers an accessible but provocative portrait of the ambiguities and diverse connotations of "the West," teasing out questions of race, politics and power from the late nineteenth-century to the present day.

Human Trials tells the life story of an unusually dedicated contemporary scientist who strove to revolutionize his field with his innovative ideas, and whose story is far from over.
Susan Quinn, biographer of Marie Curie and Karen Horney, focuses here on Dr. Howard Weiner and his belief in oral tolerance--"the long-held observation of systemic hyporesponsiveness to an antigen fed prior to immunization." He believes that compounds based on oral tolerance can be used to successfully treat autoimmune diseases, particularly multiple sclerosis. His attempts to prove this belief and bring such a compound to market are told as representative of what all scientists, investors, and patients involved in drug discovery must endure. This approach yields interesting observations regarding clinical trials in general. Most notable among them is that the trials are designed to treat large populations in the future rather than the individuals enrolled in them today.
Human Trials is a heartbreaking book. All the characters--the researchers in Dr. Weiner's laboratory, the executives in his fledgling biotech company, and especially the patients he treats--are sympathetic, and there are no happy endings for any of them. But Dr. Weiner still believes in his idea and is still toiling to prove it. Let's hope that one day we will read about how he fulfilled his life's ambition and cured MS. --Diana M. Gitig
Book Description
[A] modern American tale of one man's quest for a cure for multiple sclerosis and other autoimmune diseases. It is bejeweled with insights into the lives of patients, researchers, and businessmen."-New Scientist.
Susan Quinn's extraordinary story takes the reader into the closed world of experimental "human trials" in which new drugs are developed. Both the portrait of a dedicated scientist and the archetypal story of all medical research, Human Trials is the emotion-laden, roller-coaster trip from the lab bench to the medicine cabinet, in which scientists risk their reputations, venture capitalists their millions, and patients their very lives.
A Merloyd Lawrence Book
Customer Reviews:
Blends science with medical insights.......2001-08-11
Susan Quinn's Human Trails blends science with medical insights as it draws unusual and important connections between scientists, investors in scientific and medical research, and how drug trials are financed and conducted. Hers is written from lead investigator diaries and closed-door meetings with investors, offering more than an outside look at the facts.
A Thrilling Journey into the War Against Disease.......2001-08-10
I knew Susan Quinn's HUMAN TRIALS would be an engaging, informative inquiry into the intricate process of bringing a new drug therapy to market. What I didn't expect was that the book would read like the best of thrillers -- it takes the reader on the suspenseful and sometimes heart-wrenching journey into the very heart of the war against disease. HUMAN TRIALS is ultimately about the people who populate the closed society that chronic, degenerative illness creates (in this case, MS and rheumatoid arthritis): the patients and their families who suffer and hope, and the doctors, scientists, and investors who, from motives that mix intellectual egotism, financial gain, and selfless dedication, bring their best weapons of mind and spirit to the battle. Quinn does an admirable job describing and demystifying the strategy involved in one novel approach to conquering, or at least containing, MS and RA; the reader learns in compelling detail just what it takes to develop an untested theory into a viable, marketable protocol. However, HUMAN TRIALS goes beyond scientific process to tell a story of risk and courage on both sides of the line. On this particular journey, failure is simply a subset of perseverance, knowledge arrives in unexpected ways, and victory is really a matter of the heart more than the body.
Facinating look into clinical trials.......2001-05-31
This book grabbed me from the start since I also have one of those incurable, untreatable autoimmune diseases that rarely threaten your life, but certainly ruin it. Scleroderma patients had a recent, similar roller-coaster ride with what was thought to be a promising therapy. I could easily relate to everyone involved - patients, treating doctors, researchers, and investors. Ms Quinn took very complex material about MS and the research surrounding it and made it understandable, while telling an exciting and emotionally engaging story. Though it doesn't help me to cope day-to-day with my disease, it does make me understand the processes and people involved in the search for a treatment.
