2 out of 5 stars Wait 'till you try it.......2007-05-08

This seemingly great book has a fatal flaw - it doesn't say when (at what time of the year related to what criteria) to put into practice what Mr. Barnhart suggests.
I've written him about this but never got a reply.
Did i miss something it the book?
Aside form this point, it's a five star...

4 out of 5 stars "Informative and interesting".......2003-12-30

I liked this book. The concepts it contains are simple to understand, in fact, sometimes too simplified. This book is almost completely about finances, which is an imperative subject to understand, and follow, if one is ever to have financial stability or wealth. I hoped this would have been more of a feel good motivational book, along the lines of Tony Robbins, but it isn't that kind of book at all. This book does show its age, as it was written in the mid nineties, however, with the current resurrgence of the stock market I can look back and see some of the financial mistakes I've made since that time. When I began reading this book I felt the author lacked a deep understanding as a financier, however, by the time I'd read about half the book I was convinced that He is concerned about the welfare of those he teaches and inspires. In comparison with a book like Rich Dad Poor Dad, well, this book blows that one away. Hopefully you will read this review and skip that one.

5 out of 5 stars Tony Robbins' Top Financial Student Gets an "A"!.......2002-01-13

Here's a truly excellent book on wealth. What most people aren't aware of (as a student of Tony Robbins Wealth Mastery Course) is that the power of belief precedes all planning and action. So to the average person there may not appear to be enough advice on what to do. But the most leverage really comes from the financial mindset and the wealth blueprints.

The highlights of this book include: great quotations, clear charts and tables, and a thorough understanding of wealth unconsciousness (taught by Tony Robbins).

I guess Tony won't be writing a finance book because this one tells about all there needs to be said at this level (belief and planning).

For those who are looking for stock market advice (since the author is a stockbroker), his simple advice on buying the 10 highest yielding Dow stocks is really great. And if that's too much for investors to comprehend, then just buy an Index fund of the Dow (DIA). The key here is long-term passive investing in the highest-quality American companies. Active investing is a full-time job for pros. Daytrading is for dummies.

There are too many gimmicky books on finance (too simple, for women only, Rich Dad's, etc.). This book is one of the truly great ones.

5 out of 5 stars This should be a regular subject in Public Schools.......2001-12-01

Sure they teach you all the math about money in high school. But this book is the "real deal" on setting up an attitude about your money. If we all could just go back in time and use the tips in this book. ahhh.

5 out of 5 stars Terminate your fears of becoming rich!.......2001-11-28

I like this book, I really do. I think it teaches some important lessons that no other book does as far as I know. He really explains in detail, much more so than Tony Robbins does. Sure, his philosophy comes from Tony Robbins ideas but I think he is more focused to some few ideas whilst Tony has millions and millions of tips and ideas.

The book has a diffrent approach to money, it teaches you to understand that you dont have to be ashamed of being rich and that you really deserve being rich. I love this book to tell you the truth. The books begin quite silly and I almost stop reading it after the first chapter but after the third chapter I Understood what the book was about. THIS BOOK WILL CHANGE YOUR ATTITUDE TO MONEY, and it will unlock your power to become rich!

This book is good as a complement to other financial books I think and the excerises are really good too. But if your searching for mathematical stuff and figures this book is not it, this book talks about who you are and what you can do to devolop in to a millionares attitudes, mindset, values and beliefs!

A GREAT BOOK, BUY IT!!!

    Book Description

    Structuralist macroeconomics has emerged recently as the only viable theoretical alternative for economists and practitioners in developing countries. Lance Taylor's innovative work represents a landmark in this field. It codifies a new generation of structuralist macroeconomic models that incorporate the economic power relationships of key institutions and groups, integrates both finance and real macroeconomics, and covers a diverse range of experience in the developing world over the past three decades.

    In an introduction Taylor explains his methodology, describes assumptions underlying the models used, and reviews theories that relate economic growth and the role of financial assets. He then takes up basic structuralist models of a closed economy and moves on to consider the open economy cases. He incorporates the latest developments in the field (inflation, financial crisis, exchange rate management, increasing returns, and the like) in a treatment that departs substantially from economic orthodoxy.

    Taylor first addresses the question of how to specify .closure" or define the causal structure of macro models. He also considers how income redistribution influences growth and output and how income redistribution interacts with inflation. Next, an investment-driven non-full employment growth model draws on ideas introduced earlier to illustrate how different sorts of macroeconomic policies affect short-run adjustment and growth prospects over time. Taylor then turns to the problems proposed by economic openness in a stylized semi-industrialized country, starting with international trade. A fix-price/flex-price model is developed, and additional models demonstrate cases of policy relevance as well as interactions between class conflict and growth.

    Lance Taylor is Professor of Economics at MIT.

      Book Description

      Equality in law between men and women in the European Community is an integral part of the EC's social policy and crucial to its economic and social cohesion. This 15-Volume Encyclopedia analyzes the legal framework for equal opportunities which now exists in the Community due to the adoption of EC Directives on equal treatment, equal pay and social security, and to the work of the European Court of Justice in this area. It looks at how the EC Directives have been implemented and interpreted in each Member State, and at the other legislative and constitutional provisions affecting the principle of equality. All the principal legal provisions are reproduced or translated. Extracts from or digests of national case law are also included. Each volume is structured so that Member States's provisions on equality can be directly compared. The editors of this Encyclopedia are Michel Verwilghen, Professeur ordinaire a la Faculte de Droit, Universite catholique de Louvain, and Ferdinand von Prondzynski, Professor of Law and Dean of the Law School, University of Hull. A French version of this text has been published through Les Editions juridiques Bruylant, Brussels.

        Book Description

        Although European policy initiatives to advance the position of women in Academia (and especially in science) have proliferated, both at national and EU levels, serious inequities of many kinds remain. This situation is exposed and investigated in this outstanding book, which presents reports and discussions from a two-day conference held at the Law Faculty of Lund University in December 2004. The participants law professors and social scientists present detailed reports on domestic experiences and regulations in eight European countries: Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

        Among the many provocative issues raised and explored are the following:

        positive action in theory and practice;
        the progress of the EU Commission s strategy to integrate equal opportunity into all Community policies and activities;
        the motives for promoting women in Academia;
        the importance not only of setting targets but of funding to achieve them;
        the extensive group of part-timers and fixed-term employees at the margin of the traditional academic career;
        the importance of creating a situation in Academia where woman excellence shows; and
        the development of marketable research disciplines embodied in private research institutes.

        With its penetrating analysis of its subject women in Academia in Europe and its many keen insights into the possibilities within Community equality law to move forward quickly and effectively toward equity in academic positions for women and men, Women in Academia and Equality Law. will be read avidly and put to use by committed lawyers, academics, and policymakers throughout the EU countries.

                Description:
                Analysis of detailed data on habitat turnover derived from the Countryside Survey of Great Britain indicates that some types of habitat conversion can be predicted. We report that parcels of semi-natural grassland were more likely to have been converted to intensive agriculture if they were large, had a high nutrient status and were in the proximity of land that has already been intensified; three variables indicating an environmental potential for intensification. Most of the conversions predicted by the models were observed (high specificity) but a substantial number of conversions were not predicted (low sensitivity), indicating that the models could be refined by integrating additional information. We suggest that the ecological and spatial characteristics of individual parcels of semi-natural habitats and their surrounding land use should be used as a basis to assess the risk of biodiversity loss in dynamic agricultural landscapes.

                    Book Description

                    This book presents a massive data set for benthic foraminifera found in the classic southern Caribbean region. It assembles data on 1000 of the most important species for the time span Cretaceous to Miocene (120 to 10 million years before present). Age ranges are placed within the framework of those used for planktic foraminifera found in Plankton Stratigraphy (Bolli et al., CUP, 1985). The taxa have been brought up to date generically, and in many cases new comparisons among species have been made--the Late Cretaceous and Early Paleogene are particularly detailed. This information, together with detailed illustrations, will enable the taxa to be used stratigraphically.

                      "A wonderful mixture of insecurity and insanity. Every line of Laurie Foos' new novel is suffused with intelligence, wit and daring. Exhilarating!"-Fay Weldon

                      A fabulist for the twenty-first century, Laurie Foos is back with a whip-smart, refreshingly contemporary take on the nature of beauty, the importance of appearance and the all-too-human cravings for friendship, spiritual fulfillment and love.

                      A modern-day superwoman, Cass embodies the Elvis adage "Taking Care of Business"-from coping with the disappearance of her Elvis-obsessed parents and caring for her agoraphobic sister to treating the folically-challenged and avoiding the attentions of a perverse podiatrist-until the day a horn sprouts from her forehead. As Cass seeks treatment for her unwelcome appendage, she finds herself in a facility only Dr. Moreau could love. Join the beautiful Cass as she plans her escape and, in the process, resolves her physical and spiritual ailments, discovering more about herself than she ever thought possible.

                      In a world gone mad, where we're all on display and our obligations and obsessions are magnified by a voyeuristic culture, this feverishly hip, comic caper is the perfect tonic-one that may even answer the burning question that lurks deep in all of our hearts: "Has Elvis really left the building?"

                      Laurie Foos, lauded as "the unholy love-child of Kafka and Erica Jong," is the author of four previous novels: Ex Utero, Portrait of the Walrus by a Young Artist, Twinship and Bingo Under The Crucifix. She teaches in the Lesley Seminars in Cambridge and lives just outside of Boston with her husband and her dog, Jesse. Visit her website at www.lauriefoos.com.

                      5 out of 5 stars Not your average Elvis.......2005-05-21

                      I picked this up on someone's recommendation and was surprised to find I liked this book as much as I did. I'm not normally a fan of so called surrealism, if that's how you would characterize this kind of book about a woman who grows a horn in the middle of her head. Once I got into it, I thoroughtly enjoyed it. There are lots of Elvis jokes in it, which some people may not like, but the author shows great compassion, also, instead of letting it just be an easy, bad joke. Parts of the book are very sad and other parts are totally bizarre. Somehow it all works. What the author has to say about beauty and family and Elvis made me think about all those things in new ways. Foos has a really interesting way of looking at life. I'm looking forward to reading some of her other work.

                      5 out of 5 stars A great read!.......2005-05-17

                      Laurie Foos mixes characters who are afflicted with agoraphobia, female pattern baldness, and rhinoceros horns, for starters, and sets this band of freaks in a suburban ghost town with its own King -- Elvis. Ordinary people and the prosaic details of their lives are Foos' stock in trade, yet you find yourself contemplating the nature of beauty, loyalty, abandonment, and life's other, larger truths. The plot pivots on a surreal sequence set at a special hospital that shatters the narcotic routine of suburbia. Despite the story's fluid pace, memorable characters, and scattered truisms ("All roads lead to Elvis"), there are no pat answers here. Foos is following her own literary trajectory, beginning with Ex Utero, and doesn't feel obligated to spoon-feed meaning to her readers. A great read, impossible to put down, though far too brief -- I was in for a dozen more chapters, at least.

                      5 out of 5 stars Foos Delivers Really Funny Wacky Book .......2005-05-11

                      Foos's new book is both hilarious and very sad. The narrator, Cass, is a hair replacement specialist who wants to be Jewish because she can't eat ham for fear of choking like her namesake, Mama Cass, and has an agoraphobic sister, Lena, who can't stop pining for their long-lost parents. The parents, Elvis fanatics, took off one night and never returned, but that doesn't stop Lena and Cass from speculating about where they are. There's also all sorts of trivia and bits about Elvis, who may or may not be hiding out at a hospital for people who develop animal characteristics. After Cass grows a six-inch horn in her forehead, she winds up in this hospital, and things get wackier and wilder from there. Foos has drawn a really sharp heroine who imparts wisdom about hair, identity, beauty, and Elvis throughout the book. I found myself rooting for her all the way. There are so many themes interwoven and many different surreal and strange plot lines, but somehow it all works, and you put down the book feeling you learned something you hadn't known before. I read it all in one sitting, and it made me laugh out loud and get choked up all at once. I wonder why Foos doesn't have a bigger following.

                        It lets the reader know why the soviets were dominant militarily for a long time in Eastern Europe. They were brutal and trained to be efficient in that subject. This book is an eye openner in all that it shows technique wise and the little history lesson the author gives. International Bodyguard Association president wrote this book.

                        I was laughting loudly while reading this book.
                        I've newer red a such BS about former Soviet special forces.
                        If you want to be busted in no time then read this "manual" and try to follow it.
                        It may be a "good guidance" for stupid Hollywood screen writers
                        to produce another amusing movie for ignorant general public.
                        Author or a "translator" is a real dumbass. He/She couldn't even properly translate the original insignia on the KGB sign shown on the front cover of this book. This sign has been issued only as a memorabilia to the veterans and other KGB personnel in connection with round (jubilee) dates in KGB history since its creation. In original form it shall be red "(number of years) of VChK - KGB". The real KGB sign of honor has a totally different design and insignia on it.
                        The most important skills you learn in special forces is how to be invisible. The main principle is that "You're invincible until you're invisible". I wouldn't give this book even one star but unfortunatelly it's not an option.

                        I was dissapointed by this book, trully it is telling you how to run ove stuff, how to go prone, how to stab someone (duhhhh, could it be just push the knife in someones chest). I thik if you really want good fighting stuff there are better things around. Check out Master of the Blade, excellent book. Also check out some other stuff by that author, a really smart guy, not a fighter not a writer.

                        This book is the translation of a Russian text dating back to 1945, the hayday the Soviet Union. The chapters covering the history of the Spetznaz, past and present, is very interesting, especially the parts detailing the different branches of Special Action teams and how they relate, but the technical portion of the manual tends to be vague and too general to be of use unless you're already a student of Samooborona bez Oruzhia (commonly known by the Russian acronym "Sambo" and translated as "self defense without weapons"). Don't buy this manual if you're looking to study Soviet hand to hand combat. If that's what you're after, go to www.russianmartialart.com or www.amerross.com.

                        The author/translator, Jim Shortt, retained many of the terms common in the Soviet Union, which may seem odd to Americans (I wouldn't even try to explain "moral-political" to your average American, as I have a hard time grasping it!).

                        There is also a section on physical fitness and recovery which is interesting, and probably as relavent today as it was in 1945.

                        This is not a bad book, and I do recommend it, but only if kept in perspective.

                        I found the book to be very interesting from a historical viewpoint but found many of the techniques inside to be very standard issue.Not a groundbreaking book but not a bad one either.

                        Book Description

                        This scholarly yet engaging book presents a dynamic interpretation of Jewish history—from biblical to modern times—as a set of interconnected and evolving events and relationships that spring directly from Judaism's core beliefs.

                        Rivkin explores how monotheism has enabled Jews throughout history to adapt themselves, their communities, and their vision of the Covenant whenever they were confronted by new circumstances or historical forces. This flexibility and redefinition has time and again ensured Jewish survival and vitality, and placed Jews in the forefront of the modern trend of globalization.

                        The Unity Principle is newly revised and expanded based on Rivkin's classic work The Shaping of Jewish History.

                        "This remarkable book captures much of the scope, passion, originality, and incisiveness of an inimitable teacher and cherished mentor who opened new vistas for our understanding of Jewish history—indeed of history itself."

                        - FROM THE FOREWORD BY ROBERT M. SELTZER—Professor of Jewish History at Hunter College and author of Jewish People, Jewish Thought: The Jewish Experience in History.

                        This audacious book presents a creative theory of virtually everything! I am so in awe of Professor Rivkin that anything I write here is going to be inadequate. It's impossible to do justice to Rivkin's comprehensive knowledge of Jewish history and world history, to his powerful explanations of the creative power of monotheism or his observations of our present global challenges and possibilities. One must experience this great mind first hand. The Unity Principle is as accessible as it is brilliant. The man writes beautifully. This is a transformative book. You may not be the same after you read it. We are God seekers, and our God is a God who teaches. That is the essence yet only the beginning of Rivkin's offering here.

                        5 out of 5 stars An elegantly written, scholarly review of Jewish history.......2003-12-19

                        This distillation of the wisdom gained in a lifetime of scholarly inquiry and teaching by a professor of Jewish history concisely presents complex concepts in a readily comprehensible and elegantly written style. Dr. Rivkin traces the metamorphoses of Jewish concepts of deity throughout the vicissitudes of Jewish historical experience, in the process documenting "the chosen people's" remarkable capacities for adaptation and survival. Inculcated and nurtured by scholars, priests, and prophets, the Jews' commitment to monotheism has remained constant through mutating prisms of experience and historical process. Indeed, Dr. Rivkin emphasizes, there is no simple or universal Jewish theology, but rather a process of searching for, rather than finding, an omnipotent deity who endowed humankind with free will and therefore with the capacities for both good and evil. Within this historical perspective, the author finds an underlying unity in the spectrum of Jewish beliefs from those of the ultra-orthodox through those of their secular and non-professing counterparts, and he identifies this unity with the liberating impulses of capitalistic globalization affecting all of humankind that are disproportionately implemented and advanced by urbanized, well-educated intellectuals, professionals, and merchants of Jewish descent. In short, this work constitutes a summary of world history with especial emphasis on the unique contributions made by those schooled in Jewish thought, values, and faith.

                              Summarizes our current knowledge about the ecology, evolution, and conservation of columnar cacti and their vertebrate mutualists to show that the very survival of these cacti depends on animals who pollinate them and disperse their seeds. Ranging from the Sonoran Desert to the northern Andes, these studies explore aspects of geology and evolution that have forged this relationship, review findings in anatomy and physiology, and discuss recent research in population and community ecology as well as conservation issues.
