Book Description

Among the major professions, certified public accountancy has the most severe underrepresentation of African Americans: less than one percent of CPAs are black. Theresa Hammond explores the history behind this statistic and chronicles the courage and determination of African Americans who sought to enter the field. In the process, she expands our understanding of the links between race, education, and economics.

Drawing on interviews with pioneering black CPAs, among other sources, Hammond sets the stories of black CPAs against the backdrop of the rise of accountancy as a profession, the particular challenges that African Americans trying to enter the field faced, and the strategies that enabled some blacks to become CPAs. Prior to the 1960s, few white-owned accounting firms employed African Americans. Only through nationwide networks established by the first black CPAs did more African Americans gain the requisite professional experience. The civil rights era saw some progress in integrating the field, and black colleges responded by expanding their programs in business and accounting. In the 1980s, however, the backlash against affirmative action heralded the decline of African American participation in accountancy and paved the way for the astonishing lack of diversity that characterizes the field today.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Every African American current and potential CPA.......2005-08-15

As an African American CPA since 1980, this book is very comprehensive in describing the trials and tribulations of our entry into the accounting profession. My father was born in 1927 and had wanted to become a CPA after hearing about Jesse Blayton. Due to the limitations described in this book, he never realized his dream. Because of his interest in accounting, I studied bookkeeping in high school and became hooked.

In 1974, I got very lucky and was admitted to the accounting program at North Carolina A&T State University. There I studied under Dr. Quiester Craig who is chronicled on page 111 on the book. Just as Craig said in his story, at that time, all our students were naive; however Dr. Craig established that the program at NC A&T would be geared toward preparing every accounting graduate to pass the CPA exam.

This book is a must read for every African American CPA and potential CPA and should be textbook material in every HBCU accounting program in the country. Again, against all odds, we have achieved remarkable things.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring, Exhilarating Yet Heartrending.......2002-08-23

From my vantage point as a black CPA, this book is at once inspiring and uplifting yet heartrending and depressing. After having read about the trials and tribulations of the pioneers of my profession and of my race(who were/are heroic in some sense), I feel compelled to take advantage of today's opportunity out of respect for what they've done to pave the way for those who have followed.

The author does a fantastic job of taking an erstwhile research paper and making it extremely enjoyable to read. This book is must reading for CPAs in general and black CPAs in particular.

5 out of 5 stars Important, Moving, and Entertaining.......2002-08-06

Hammond chronicles the stories of the remarkable individuals who blazed the trail for African-Americans in the accounting profession. Or I should say, began blazing the trail, because as Hammond points out it is still by far the most segregated profession. When most people hear "accounting" they think of something very dry and technical. But this book is far from that. You learn about the profession and how institutional racism operates, but always as a context for the amazing stories, struggles, and personalities that Hammond conveys. She obviously spent many hours interviewing these pioneers and she tells their stories with academic rigor, but also with compassion, respect, and a sense of humor.

5 out of 5 stars Super Duper!.......2002-07-19

Ok, so maybe I haven't read the book, but since I doubt this is going to break best seller records, I figured I could give some information about the author.

She was my accounting professor last semester in a class called Accounting Information Systems. Theresa is funny, engaging and most importantly a very passionate individual, especially about the struggle for racial equality.

She is undoubtedly the first person to do any research on the subject, and in her powerpoint presentation of the book she unravels an interesting tale of the business world's most caucasian profession. The African americans which are the subject of her narrative show themselves are driven by their interest in this niche profession long after all hope has vanished. The quirky personalities of her story tell a story that sheds light upon the grit of the human spirit.

I had no idea how to present myself, or how to put together a proper portfolio. When I was applying for schools and now, when applying for jobs, I was having difficulty getting noticed. The tools in this book helped me land an awesome creative job... yeah no more restaurants. The book comes packed with photos... great for me since I'm not a big reader. And comes with a handy CD, for the computer savvy. I wish I had this book when applying for colleges, and then I might have gotten into the college of my choice.

        Book Description

Intercropping is a method of sustaining or improving soil structure by growing two or more crops on the same field. It is a technique of wide application and of growing importance for both commercial and subsistence farmers. This textbook provides a comprehensive survey of the design and analysis of intercropping experiments. Its main themes are that techniques such as relative indices make it possible to cover a wide variety of conditions, and that statistical models for density-yield relations enable recommendations to be made to growers of crops. As a result, graduate students and researchers in statistics, biometry, and agriculture whose study involves intercropping will find this an invaluable text and reference.

5 out of 5 stars special designs important in agricultural experiments.......2002-04-09

The design of experiments plays a major role in industry today. Much of the original statistical research began in the 1920s and 1930s motivated by agricultural experimentation. After the seminal work of Fisher, Federer was among the leading researchers in this area and he produced a major text many years ago. Intercropping is apparently an effective procedure that helps maintain soil. Intercropping experiments require special designs. These designs also apply to some other areas including chemical mixture experiments but by and large are rather specialized. Federer chose to write two volumes. This one deals with the less complicated case of one two crops. Nevertheless there is enough material to fill a book.

The second volume deals with three or more crops where the computations become more difficult.

This book is authoritative and well-written. It contains references to all the relevant literature. But this is not the text to go to if you want a general account of experimental designs for industrial applications.

          Book Description

The techniques described in this book provide an alternative method to understanding cellular biological structures and processes. Molecular genetic methods mainly analyse single molecules or very small cellular parts, which does not necessarily enhance our understanding of the fundamental cellular processes. However, using techniques such as atomic force or infrared microscopy, neutron reflection, stopped-flow cytometry, laser microscopy, or biosensoric-based electronics, it is possible to study cells and biological systems in their entirety. Physiological processes of cells, such as movement, development, plasticity, regeneration and communication, can be visualized using the high precision biophysical techniques described here.

4 out of 5 stars Before Jeeves and Wooster.......2005-12-25

After watching the excellent Steven Fry and Hugh Laurie Jeeves and Wooster programs, I read a few of the Jeeves and Wooster books and found them as hilarious as the TV shows. Little did I know that Wodehouse had a seventy-five year writing career which included plays, lyrics, poems, magazine articles, novels, and short stories. The Uncollected Wodehouse assembles some of Wodehouse's early works and short stories that haven't appeared in other collections and had therefore been unavailable until the publication of this book, shortly after Wodehouse died in 1975.

The stories aren't bad, but there are only glimpses of Wodehouse's future genius and humor. To be fair, many of these pieces were only intended for magazines and were "disposable," in a sense. The short article on advertising, for instance, was probably funny at the time (circa 1909) but doesn't compare to Dorothy Sayers's scathingly funny indictment of the advertising profession in her Murder Must Advertise.

A few of the short stories in The Uncollected Wodehouse, on the other hand, are still quite funny. You can visualize the chaos of nineteen baskets each containing a pug dog arriving at the door of the very proper Colonel Reynolds in When Papa Swore in Hindustani. And Reggie Pepper in The Test Case is funny enough as a precursor to Bertie Wooster that it would be worthwhile tracking down the other six stories he appeared in.

              5 out of 5 stars Uncollected collection.......2005-09-20

P.G. Wodehouse is known to generations of fans as the creator of Jeeves and Wooster, but his writing was quite more eclectic and widespread than that venerable collection of tales. This text, compiled by David Jasen (Wodehouse's principal biographer) shows a new breadth to Wodehouse - this includes newspaper and magazine articles, short stories beyond his usual genre (including the only mystery short story Wodehouse ever wrote), and even a little bit of poetry.

Wodehouse himself had an eventful life, including time spent in a prison camp as well as incarceration in a maternity home in France, but, according to Malcolm Muggeridge in the Foreword, there is no diminishment in the quality of Wodehouse's writing regardless of his personal circumstances. This is apparent reading across this broad collection that spans the greater part of seven decades, that Wodehouse had a particular gift and style that remained permanent.

Wodehouse, according to Muggeride and Jasen, was a clown of the highest order - clowns are often keen observers of human nature and activity, knowning what makes people tick, so as to make them laugh. 'Laughter, indeed, is a great equaliser between the impulse to adulate and a propensity to scoren those, as the Book of Common Prayer has it, set in authority over us - which is why, incidentally, laughter is so abhorrent to all authoritarians whatever their ideology.' Humourous romances are rarely the stuff of revolution, but they often do little to support the existing order of things. Wodehouse's stories have depth to them, but there's always an undercurrent that simultaneously admires and disparages the system - whatever that system may be.

In this collection are characters little known even to Wodehouse fans. For example, the character of Reggie Pepper, was the first series character for Wodehouse; however, with the advent of Bertie Wooster, Pepper receded from view. This is a book full of 'what ifs' that the keen observer can derive much pleasure, and much frustration, from considering. This, in the end, is only true to form of the Wodehouse style.

4 out of 5 stars It's Wodehouse. How bad could it be?.......2001-12-01

These collected writings, of various sorts, while not the cream of the Wodehouse crop, are still Wodehouse. As such, they are still superior to roughly 95% of everything else written in a humorous vein. What's more, taken as a whole, they show the evolution of Wodehouse's writing from schoolboy days into his prime. And, some of them are, in fact, gems.

Not, perhaps, the book with which to makes one's acquaintance with Wodehouse, but a worthy addition to the published Wodehouse collection.

4 out of 5 stars No Bottom to This Barrel.......2000-05-02

When the wary reader encounters "The Uncollected So-and-So", he is wise to keep a tight grip on his billfold. He may suspect that what has gone uncollected may have been left lying about for good reason and perhaps should have been placed in the hands of a "collector" of a kind other than literary.

Happily, P. G. Wodehouse inspires no such fears. One might say that, while some Wodehouse is better than others, none is worse. Though falling largely into the second class, the pieces in this modest volume lack nothing of the familiar Plumsian delight.

The historically minded will find the very first writing for which Plum received pay ("Some Aspects of Game-Captaincy", in which the terms "blot" and "excrescence" are coupled in the way that would someday rolling trippingly off the tongues of Bertie Wooster's aunts), his first appearance in Punch ("An Unfinished Collection", the prelude to many a future collecting mania), his first published short story ("When Papa Swore in Hindustani", where, not for the last time, a recalcitrant father learns the hidden virtues of his daughter's beau) and his first butler story ("The Good Angel", whose Keggs misplaces his h's and lacks Jeeves' nobility of spirit but nonetheless applies a keen understanding of the psychology of the individual to reunite young hearts separated by an interloping poet).

There are, in all, fourteen stories, none likely to be familiar to even the most assiduous Wodehousian, and fifteen occasional items from newspapers, including a couple of poems. The non-stories ("nonfiction" would be distinctly not le mot juste) are very slight (averaging only two pages each), and some depend on topical references for their humor. They are best enjoyed as bon-bons between the more substantial fare.

Wodehouse unfortunately stopped writing a few years ago. Editors must now fish into the barrel for new entertainments. It is our good fortune that this particular barrel has no bottom.

                      4 out of 5 stars A book with reading.......2006-11-28

No Excuse Leadership is an excellant account of personal triumphs of everday individuals who enlisted in military service, challanged Ranger School, and graduated from this outstanding leadership course. I am not a Ranger, but did serve in the armed forces, and believe that these personal accounts of Ranger school demonstrates that people can over come physical obstacles and mental boundries to accomplish their goal. This book will motivate people to stay focused so they can overcome lifes challenges. One Ranger I work with says that "commitment" was one thing that Ranger School instilled in him and still lives by. You can read about these Ranger students "commitment" as the tackle this well respected school.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Beneficial to Future Rangers/Personally Rewarding to Civilians.......2006-09-25

In this book, Brace E Barber makes excellent use of former Ranger School students as his sources. The prologue is important to providing a basis for the book, which is commonly tied together by a leadership theme. The body of the book contains each of the students' recollections on Ranger School. Each provides a different perspective on the school, which helps to broaden the type of information the reader will encounter. Each student, though, portrays the primary importance of the school to be its underlying focus on leadership.

All readers will further their knowledge of their own strengths and weaknesses. Future Ranger School students will be greatly motivated by this book, and will find it to be insightful in its description of the school. Civilians can benefit as well, as it directly presses the importance of self-truth, ownership of goals, and the mental consequences of failure. More importantly, both parties will realize the colossal importance to one's self-esteem that achieving a challenging goal can afford.

I strongly recommend anyone to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars You Have No Excuse!.......2006-03-16

You have no excuse, not to read this book! As a 20 year vertan of the US Navy I know a little bit about Leadership and Teamwork. Brace Barber examines the complexities of Leadership and shows everyone how it is teamwork, team building and faith that makes a great leader. By Far the best book on leadership for the Corporate and Military world I have ever read. You do not need to be in or have served in the military to learn something from this book. For those who equate military leadership with not having anything to do with the corporate world, you are sadly mistaken. I have paralelled my personal corporate and military experiences with those that Brace has written into his book and I was amazed by the similarities and the lessons I learned through them. In some cases the lesson I have learned was to make better choices in my leadership style. A real Leader is also the Servant to those being led. Brace illustrates that clearly here!

5 out of 5 stars A "MUST READ" FOR PARENTS.......2005-12-31

As the mother of a December 2005 Ranger School graduate, I recommend this book to parents. This book helped me to understand and support my son during Ranger School. I would not have known HOW to support him without this book.

2 out of 5 stars Another one of those books that confuse business & military.......2005-02-10

No corporate workers have nothing in common with the military. There is no correlation between war fighting and business. Go join the military if you cannot distinguish between the two. Another one of those books that tries to make a business buch off the military.

                            Book Description

On the eve of the American Civil War, the old predatory powers of Europe were waiting to capitalize on the split in the Union. President Lincoln had to prevent foreign governments from giving official recognition to the Confederacy. Jay Monaghan shows how the underestimated, “rustic” president dealt with diplomats both in this country and abroad—and also with contentious politicians and cabinet members.

                                  Book Description

When Benjamin Franklin, the 18th-century American statesman and scientist, watched the calming effect of a drop of oil on the waves and ripples of a London pond, he was observing what Pliny the Elder and generations of seafarers had done before him. Franklin, though, was the first to wonder exactly what was happening to the oil, and to investigate this strange phenomenon. Following Franklin's lead, a motley crowd of scientists over the next two centuries and more chose to investigate the nature of atoms and molecules through the interaction of fluid membranes. They included Lord Rayleigh, an altruistic English Lord, Agnes Pockels, who conducted experiments in her kitchen and became one of the earliest women to make lasting contributions to science, the renowned Dutch pediatrician Evert Gorter, and Irving Langmuir, one of America's greatest industrial scientists. Building on Franklin's original experiments, their work has culminated in the discovery of the structure of cell membranes, research that continues to bear fruit today. Ben Franklin Stilled the Waves is far more than the story of oil on water; it is a voyage into the very nature of science and its place in our history.
