3 out of 5 stars Didn't work that well for me..........2004-03-31

While I am a complete novice with no accounting experience, I do hold a college degree, and am facile with numbers and concepts (usually). Because accounting is such a terminology-laden undertaking, the fact that this book does not contain a glossary, and that terms used are not clearly defined, left me feeling lost. Given the recommendations I'd seen for this book, I'd expected a more basic treatment of the subject of bookkeeping as related to accounting, to make the mechanics of the process more transparent. I felt that this book rambled between accounting concepts and business accounting practices in its descriptions of procedures one might use. As for the use of this book for the "small business," it seemed to me that "small" was a relative term. I'd liken the scale of "small" to be along the lines of comparing Google to Microsoft -sure, Google is "small" in comparison, but for purposes of a small start-up service business, the scale seemed out of proportion.

Overall, for the rank beginner, I'd still suggest looking for something in a more graphically useful format, with a good glossary and more clear detail. For someone with accounting/bookkeeping experience, this book may provide more useable information, although I still feel that the way information is organized and presented is less than optimal.

4 out of 5 stars Good information for a quick review of accounting.......1999-04-23

It's a good overview of accounting terms and procedures, I liked that it was about the new business. I mainly concetrated on the record keeping chapters, and I don't know why some books call expenses, cash disbursements, and other books call expenses, expenses? I keep a record of expenses, and another of petty cash expenses. To me cash disbursements are always paid when they have to so I don't have a due date and a paid date. Also I don't generate a sales invoice and then record the income because they happen at the same time, I collect immediately, so that part is unecessary or could be elaborated on for the business that uses this method.

It helped me with quickbooks and I have a better idea of how to prepare financial statements using software. This is a good review even if you have other accounting books, it's small and easy and to read and you can take it anywhere.

Usually accounting is too dry for me, but the chapters were straight to the point. A good buy for an inventory based or service based business, Most accounting books lack a common sense explanation, this one is a good deal.

          Book Description

Oilseeds and legumes provide a significant proportion of the protein and energy requirements of the world population. This important new book provides comprehensive details of the main oil seed and legume crops focusing particularly on the nutritional aspects of these crops which are, or have the potential to be, more widely exploited in developing countries where are or have the potential to be, more widely exploited in developing countries where protein and energy malnutrition continue to escalate. The predicted rapid rise of populations in many world regions which are increasingly vulnerable to food shortages means that a full knowledge of the nutritional significance of available crops is vital in helping to prevent potential calamities. Food and Feed from Legumes and Oil Seeds has been written by a team of international contributors, each with direct experience of these important crops and their nutritional merits, and the editors are both international experts in the crops covered. This book will become of great value to nutritionists, food and feed scientists and technologists, agricultural scientists and all those involved with overseas developments and food aid organizations.

What do we, as a society, do with our aged and ailing? A fortunate few spend their last years in small, caring rest homes like Placida House, where each resident is lovingly treated like a member of the family. Baby Dog Benji rules the roost, lavishing canine warmth and affection. Lee and Svea are the expert cook and housemother, absolutely indispensable and adored by all. Henry does the maintenance and takes care of the grounds and occasionally saves somebody's life. And Dr. William is the all-wise father figure who patiently steers Placida House safely through many a storm and keeps things running on an even keel.

Set aside the cares of the day for a moment, and enter the safe haven of Placida House, where there’s plenty of laughter, good spirits, comic absurdity, and heartwarming spiritual growth. Here it is that men come to grips with their mortality and their prejudices, and try to answer the questions of what's it all been about and what's it all for. But mostly, here is where they at last find peace, protection, happiness, and sincere acceptance.

During the Iraq War, coauthor Capt. Jason Conroy commanded Charlie Company, which was part of Task Force 1-64, 2d Brigade Combat Team, part of the U.S. Army’s 3d Infantry Division. A tank unit equipped with mammoth M1A1 Abrams tanks, Conroy’s company was literally at the tip of the U.S. Army’s spear and one of the first elements into Baghdad. Veteran journalist Ron Martz was embedded in Charlie Company. Together, from the unique perspective of an armor unit that was in nearly continuous combat for four straight weeks, Conroy and Martz tell the unvarnished story of what went right and what went deadly wrong in Iraq. Conroy and his soldiers were able to overcome supply shortages, intelligence failures, and miserable weather to battle their way into downtown Baghdad, a place where they were told they would never have to fight. Heavy Metal evaluates the Army’s performance, including its use of tactics that were developed during the war but for which the soldiers had never trained.

Through the exciting personal stories of the young troopers of Charlie Company - who experienced a very different war from what was seen back home on TV - Heavy Metal tells us much about the qualities of today’s American soldier, about twenty-first-century desert and urban warfare, and about how the Army should prepare to fight future wars.

Heavy Metal is an outstanding and insightful glimpse of the innerworkings of an armor company training and going to war. The authors' dedication to put the soldiers at the forefront of the story truly shows. For this reason, Heavy Metal succeeds at clearly illustrating the bravery, tenacity, and creativity of the armor warriors that fought during the famed Thunder Runs into Baghdad.
Considering the conditions that the authors endured and the short time involved getting this fine work to print, Heavy Metal is an indespensible reference for the combat operations that shaped the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom. This book will not only make you proud of the soldiers that fought through tremendous uncertainty and harsh conditions, it also illustrates how armor (tanks) can be used in future operations.

4 out of 5 stars Honest and Informative.......2006-05-27

Heavy Metal is a very informative book without losing the reader in trivial information. Prior to reading this book I did not know much about tanks. Conroy describes tanks, their crews, and the impact of tanks in modern warfare quite well. Some other reviews have mentioned that it lacked detail, but I believe Conroy did an excellent job of describing what he saw and what his group accomplished. His portrayal of his men and the army appear to be quite honest. He admits to problems he faced while he also describes how he and his men problem solved. I would recommend this book to those entering the service as it provides perspective on leadership roles.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling, Inspiring & Instructive Combat Story .......2005-11-26

Kudos and thanks to Captain Jason Conroy and veteran journalist Ron Martz for a compelling, inspiring and instructive combat story about Charlie Company's battle to Baghdad. The book provides a clearer vision of war for those of us who have never been in combat and presents some awesome personal stories in that "up close & personal" way. This is an amazing story of survival - all came home - from Charlie Company. The story is told in an "unspun" version which is very refreshing. Telling us what went right and what went horribly wrong shows that Capt Conroy and Ron Martz took off any "armor" that some may use to hide the truth. The portrayal of courage and the commitment of the young soldiers was very poignant. The book should be read and viewed as one of those rare accounts you can read and truly look at the "lessons learned" and carry them as vital tools for the future. One cannot be the same person after reading this gripping story of what these men went through on their way to Baghdad. I highly recommend this book to any person who wants to learn more about the reality of war and a profound example of the human spirit at work under adverse and life threatening conditions.

4 out of 5 stars Well done but too general at times and too brief........2005-10-28

If you have not read 'Thunder Run' read that book first. It gives you a more complete picture of events and will help you glean more from 'Heavy Metal'. If you are new to armor operations this is a very good book. I am writing this review assuming you are looking for the more detailed information you would expect from someone who was an armor company commander.

Coming out months after 'Thunder Run' it is hard not to compare 'Heavy Metal' to that work. 'Heavy Metal' is well written and details CPT Conroy's and Charlie Company's viewpoints during the war. I had high hopes for this book but I think it falls short of its potential. CPT Conroy does a good job of covering the highlights of his year in Iraq as well as going over some lessons learned. He does shed some light on a number of particular events but overall the actions are not given enough detail considering what was already covered in 'Thunder Run'. I wish the book had been about twice as long. I was particularly disappointed that CPT Conroy did not include more of the direct experiences of the men under his command beyond what he observed. Obviously this is his story not a unit history but as someone who was in the perfect position to get his fellow tankers' thoughts on the particular actions he could have related far more about armor combat at the platoon and company levels.

Even the lessons learned are a bit general. Armor is useful in urban warfare is one lesson he relates but that is certainly nothing new. He obviously is aware of WW2 armor operations. The M1 Abrams has shifted the old armor vs. anti-armor equation but is that a lesson? What if a defender is prepared or better armed? He touches on this but again does not offer much analysis or insight. He mentions the Abrams he lost on road during the thunder run was probably not hit by an RPG. There is a considerable amount of public information now on armor vehicle damage from hostile fire in Iraq. He does not seem to take any of this into account and analyze it against his own experiences and observations.

CPT Conroy also gives almost no information about the actual responsibilities of a tank company commander. How was resupply handled? How often was he in communication with higher HQ and how? How did he communicate his orders with his platoon leaders? How much sleep did he get? How much did he fight his tank vs. leading the company? He only gives occasional glimpses at these questions. It is hard to believe but even after finishing the book you will be hard pressed to describe what an average day was like for him commanding a tank company in battle.

As a result, while it makes for an interesting read and does add a bit to the history of the events it is not detailed enough to serve as a learning tool for the combat leaders of today, or tomorrow, nor particularly useful for the military historian. This is particularly disappointing considering the experiences and lessons he obviously has to share. More frustrating is that you can tell he was thinking along these lines as he wrote the book but he did not quite follow through. Perhaps his editors thought it would not sell.

If you are interested in modern armor operations, the war in Iraq, or the Thunder Run in particular 'Heavy Metal' is a good read. Just don't expect too much.

3 out of 5 stars More of an overview than the details........2005-09-08

Good book. I was looking for another "Thunder Run" by David Zucchino, which is more of a blow-by-blow account of the Baghdad armored invasion.
This book covers the same material but from the perspective of a higher level commander on the ground. Not quite as much detail about the fighting (which I am more interested in). Still a good read.

                                        Book Description

This richly detailed account provides an important addition to current work on women in late medieval England, taking as its starting point the household diary of Alice de Bryene, a Suffolk noblewoman of the late 14th and early 15th century. Like Christine de Pizan, de Bryene enjoyed greater status and influence as a widow and owner of several large estates than most married women of her time, allowing her a remarkable degree of social and financial independence. Moving outward from de Bryene's own life, this illuminating work provides a vivid picture of the medieval household , examining marriage, education, patronage, and the private and public roles of the medieval woman of privilege.

This is a great starter book for those who are interested in a medieval gentrywoman's life.Ffiona Swabey is an interesting writer who gives us a general idea of Alice de Bryne's life, and consequently any gentry woman's life in general. It was interesting to see that although Alice was considered gentry, not aristocracy, and therefore lower on the wealth scale, this woman still had numerous estates, four personal chaplains, dozens of servants and hundreds of peasants working under her.

Her book is written based on household accounts and records from Acton Manor, the estate of Dame Alice Bryene, a widow in her 50s in the period the book covers. Ms. Swabey analyzes the data from the household accounts to give us a vivid picture of Dame Alice's life and the world in which she lived and conducted business. Despite the fact that it is heavy with primary documentation, this book is not at all dry. Ms. Swabey manages to tell us a story while retaining the accuracy that we historical reenactors desire.

                                            Book Description

"Every body perseveres in its state of rest or of uniform motion in a straight line, except in so far as it is compelled to change that state by impressed forces." -Issac Newton, Principia (First Law of Motion)

In other words, students in grades 4-8 (bodies in a state of rest) need lots of hands-on activities (impressed forces) to learn (compelling change)!

All the activities in this book are based upon science principles, many of which are explained by Newton's laws. The spirit of Sir Issac is present on the pages of this book offering explanation, advice, additional information and encouragement. The labs range from determining the characteristics of matter, experimenting with elastic matter, overcoming friction, discovering the laws of motion, making a pendulum and having fun with falling. Many of the Science Action Labs provide data tables and other additional information, and an answer key is provided.

This innovative collection of Science Action Labs provides a multitude of material for your students. Choose some activities to animate your class demonstrations, convert some to hands-on labs for the entire class or develop some for individual projects or reports. You'll find that each Science Action Lab is designed to encourage your students to THINK and SOLVE PROBLEMS and, after all, isn't that what science is all about?

                                            Newton would approve.
