        Book Description

The ongoing process of increased integration of national economies, culminating in the single European market of 1992, still leaves as virtually separate the national fiscal systems. In this book international economists Jacob Frenkel and Assaf Razin join forces with public finance economist Efraim-Sadka to provide a new treatment of international taxation, one that focuses on the interactions between fiscal policies of sovereign nations and the magnitude and directions of international capital and goods flow in an integrated world economy. They unfold a lucid and clear analysis of the implications of tax competition, tax harmonization, capital flight, external imbalances, and the terms of trade for the design of efficient national tax systems. The book extends concepts developed in Frenkel and Razin's Fiscal Policies and the World Economy and includes a theory of taxation in an open world economy.

International Taxation in an Integrated World presents the stylized facts and concepts and outlines the main issues of international taxation and the implications for the international movements of goods and capital. It reviews the principles of international taxation and international macroeconomics, analyzes the international transmission of various tax and budget policies, and provides a rigorous analysis of optimal open economy tax policy in an integrated world economy. Special emphasis is placed on the interdependence between direct and indirect taxes and on the international allocation of saving, investment, and production.

Jacob A. Frenkel is Director of Research and Economic Counselor at the International Monetary Fund. Assaf Razin is Daniel Ross Professor of International Economics at Tel Aviv University. Both are Research Associates at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Efraim Sadka is Professor of Economics at Tel Aviv University.

The author has one of the most jaded views of people, business and consulting that you could imagine. 5 out of 5 stars The Reality of Management Consulting Revealed.......2004-02-20

M.F. Moss has penned a witty and bitingly satirical look at the unique and sometimes perverse world of management consulting. This overlooked book breezes through the basics of the industry in order to set the stage and then turns the author's sharp wit loose on a rich medley of fictionalized characters and anecdotes obviously drawn from the painful reality of experience. Reminiscent in many ways to Samuel Shem's treatment of the world of medicine in his classic novel, The House of God, the experiences related in this book may leave readers not familiar with the industry almost incredulous. However, those close to the industry will recognize the unimpeachable ring of truth. Management consulting attracts an esoteric collection of personalities ranging from the brilliant and decisive to the callous, sexist, and occasionally stunningly stupid. Ms. Moss delivers them all to us with a graceful mixture of intense sarcasm and tongue-in-cheek humor that is engaging for everyone and essential reading for clients, consultants and, especially, ex-consultants everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful, entertaining and well worth reading.......2003-03-14

In this book M.F. Moss provides a revealing, albeit sometimes irreverent insight into the world of management consulting. Through anecdotal stories and humorous observations M.F. Moss provides the aspiring consultant with knowledge equivalent to their first year's experience as well as some of the most important tools they will need to succeed in their chosen career.
A must read for those considering a career in consulting, a humorous introspective for those already in the field and an amusing uncensored peek behind the scenes of the consulting world for the rest of us.

5 out of 5 stars Hysterically funny and true.......2003-03-01

I thought that this would just be Dilbert-like silliness, but it is funny while providing some real advice and insight into the management consulting industry.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious and Insightful.......2003-03-01

I thought that this was just going to be funny, but it's much more. It is definitely hysterical, but it also has a lot of real world consulting advice in it. Perfect for anyone considering a career in management consulting or wants to laugh at the industry a bit.

                    Book Description

A remarkable and engrossing account of medieval England's epic conflict with France.

From 1337 to 1453 England repeatedly invaded France on the pretext that her kings had a right to the French throne. Though it was a small, poor country, England for most of those "hundred years" won the battles, sacked the towns and castles, and dominated the war. The protagonists of the Hundred Years War are among the most colorful in European history: Edward III, the Black Prince; Henry V, who was later immortalized by Shakespeare; the splendid but inept John II, who died a prisoner in London; Charles V, who very nearly overcame England; and the enigmatic Charles VII, who at last drove the English out. Desmond Seward's critically-acclaimed account of the Hundred Years War brings to life all of the intrigue, beauty, and royal to-the-death-fighting of that legendary century-long conflict.

"Mr. Seward shows us all the famous sights of those roaring times . . . and illuminates them with an easy scholarship, a nice sense of detail . . . and a most agreeable clarity of style." --The New Yorker

3 out of 5 stars How did the French win?.......2006-07-14

Mr. Seward gives a good overview of the war and a fair overview of the consequences to everyday peasants. His accounts of the crushing English victories are well told. What's missing is the ultimate French victory. They drove the English out, but the battles and campaigns by which they did are very slightly recounted.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent overall view of the conflicts.......2005-03-05

This series of conflicts really starts with the ascendency of the plantegenet line at the time of Henry II. This was an inevitable conflict due to a sovereign King of England also having a Lordship over Gascony, a title held when King Henry II married Eleanor, Duchess of Aquitaine. With Edward III having a legitimate claim to the throne of France through his mother Isabella, Seward's book tells the story of the off and on conflicts that occured from 1337-1453.

Early in the conflict, with victories at Slurs, Crecy and Poitiers, the French became aware of the fact that they could not defeat the English forces in the field. However, though the English were capable of conquering territories, they never possessed the strength to hold them indefinately. Seward does a good job of putting the reader in the shoes of the main characters, from the proud but unlucky Philip VI, to the crazy mental patient known as Charles VI. He also gives a good biographical sketch of English monarchs and princes during this period, from Edward "the Black Prince", to John of Gaunt's militarily incompentent bastard granchildren, the Beaufort brothers John and Edmund.

Seward gives a historically accurate portrayal of English hero Henry V that is a far cry from the anglo-centric version we all know through Shakespeare. A man with a tenuous claim to the throne of England invaded France and nearly became the King of France. The atrocities he committed are repugnant, even by the standards of the day and should include him with other evil despots who have ruled through terror and murder. After Henry V's death, despite the competence of his brother the Duke of Bedford, England was doomed to a protracted conflict when the young religious fanatic Joan of Arc decided she was called by God to evict the English from France.

Seward does a good job of viewing the conflict from the perspective of the French peasant, who suffered mightily under the oppression of English rule and the anarchy that existed in the conquered lands. He also details how the loss of the alliance with Burgundy, coupled with the ending of the minority of the incompetent Henry VI doomed England and precipitated the Wars of the Roses.

This is a fascinating period of time in English history that impacted greatly the history of the world. One of the most significant conflicts that shaped the modern world, I highly recommend this book as an overview of the period.

5 out of 5 stars Great overall view of this important time in history.......2005-01-19

Seward does a great job in illustrating what the Hundred Years War was and how it affected the French and the English. For someone looking for a concise overview of this important time, I would recommend this book. It does not go into too much depth within the actual battles and how they were fought, focusing only on who fought and the general formation taken, so if you are looking for the military approach this book should only be used as a reference.

Seward is a great historian and one that I will gladly turn to when I have a question.

3 out of 5 stars Loses the forest for the trees.......2003-04-25

This is a straightforward and well presented narrative history of the Hundred Years War. It concentrates mostly on the military conflict, with some asides on major figures. It is quite detailed and pithy. On these terms it's a good book. Alas it gives short shrift to the wider aspects of the war and the time. The rest of Europe, the Great Schism, the growth of nationalities, the effects of the Black Death ... these all get only a glancing look. I also hoped for more on military tactics and weaponry.

4 out of 5 stars The Hundred Years War.......2003-03-27

The Hundred Years War is about the war that the English fought with the French. Due to the fact that the French had no king and the pretext was that the English king had the right to the French throne . The two groups of people involved in this story were the English crown and Army, and the French Noble(wo)men and the French Army. England repeatedly invaded France and the French, which was a small, weak country at that time, stood strong against the English. Due to France's lack of resources and weaknesses, their army wasn't that strong. The English dominated most of the war and won most of the major battles. During the period of the war, one of the major things that happened was Joan of Arc, who lead Charles VII to become the king of France and France finally had a sovereign. My favorite character was France because they were more disposed to win the war by using whatever they could find. They also had much better looking armor.

I did liked the book. My favorite parts were the battles where Joan of Arc was. I didn't quite like the begining because it went pretty slow. If I could change anything in the book it would be adding more exitement in the starting part, because I'm an author also and I know what most of the people want.

I think I might recommend this book to a person who might like history.

                                    Book Description

What would have been the outcome of World War II if Germany had succeeded in developing their Vengeance Weapons earlier in the war and had been able to mass produce them? This novel provides the answer in an action-packed story. One that came uncomfortably close to actually occurring. It was June 1944, a day that was to be the beginning of the end for the Third Reich-but Nazi Vengeance Weapons turn the tide of the war forcing the Allies to negotiate for peace. Suddenly Hitler is assassinated and Field Marshall Rommel becomes chancellor of Germany. Stunning events that follow change the entire post-war history as we know it. Joseph Kennedy becomes president of the US, Japan invades Russia and Molotov assassinates Stalin

1 out of 5 stars What a waste of trees and ink!.......2003-01-12

Have you ever begun reading a book and gotten so distracted by the technical and English errors? Have you ever waded through a manuscript that was so filled with misspelled words, terrible grammatical constructions and English so poor that a 6th grader can spot the errors? This describes my experience with this book.

A few months ago I went on a buying binge of alternate WW2 books, which, unfortunately, included this incomprehensible piece of trash. The author has no style, no concept of how to provide the reader with any sense of continuity, absolutely no schooling in the German language, and very lame technical errors liberally sprinkled throughout the book. For instance: There is a passage that refers to the yield of the atomic device as "twenty thousand kilotons." This comes out to 20 megatons. By contrast the device that was dropped on Hiroshima was a 15 kiloton device. There are many anachronistic references to agencies (NSA, US Air Force) that didn't exist until after the war.

Then there is the junk German: "frau" is a noun and should be capitalized. "tochers" should be "Töchter," which is the plural of "Tochter," the word for daughter. "Prostituierens" is a nonsense word. In this context the author probably means "Prostituierte." "prostituieren" is a verb, not a noun. "Kornel" is not a German word. The author probably means "Oberst," the German equivalent of colonel. "Kreigsmarnie" is a poor spelling of "Kriegsmarine."

The response by an editor at this publisher who responded to my extensive list of problems replied, "In a topic of Alternative History, we depend on the author for his research. And as we come across corrections that need to be made, we apply then in the next printing." In other words, they don't even do a copy edit of the basic English, which was totally atrocious and bears no relation to the language you and I speak and write.

Not recommended on any level. I wish there were negative stars to rate this juvenile attempt.

                                    1 out of 5 stars Doesn't work for me.......2002-02-24

I have a couple of recommendations that I would like to offer to the author:

If you really need to use German words, please use them correctly and see that the spelling is right. Free advice: to thank - Danken, but: Thank you - Danke. And another one: When addressing a group of "Gentlemen", it is not just "Herren", but "Meine Herren"...

See that the timelines are coherent and don't jump back and forth

Decide whether you want the book's style to be a (fictional) documentation or a story - don't jump back and forth between both.

An finally: There are way to many "convenient" incidents, that make the whole book completely unbelievable. Nice try, but doesn't work for me...

3 out of 5 stars not the best out there.......2002-02-20

Details, details, details. These are what is missing in the book. If one reads it carfully the USS Arizona is seen in action in Normandy. The Hanford Nuclear Reservation is in Oregon, And Stalin is easily reached. Also the use of jet bombers as fighters is bending the reality of just how the planes work. Also no mention is made on the Allied bomber campaign and its results in hammpering production. While some of the figures are close the aircraft ones are for the frames, not compleated fighters. Tanks and fuel also are not mentioned well. As to the elimination of Hitler, that is just a joke. Most of the political moves are also pure moonshine. All in all poor but still well written except for those annoying little details.

1 out of 5 stars the worst book...ever.......2001-10-26

This is without a doubt the worst book I've ever read. Dialogue is comically bad, as though only one character speaks throughout the book. I forced myself to finish the book, then recycled it.

1 out of 5 stars An...excuse for an alternate history.......2001-09-18

Mr. Cooper makes many dozens of historical errors in every chapter. The dialogue is stilted and childish. the flow of the narative is choppy. The premise is so wholy absurd as to be totaly unbleievable. In short I wonder if the author is a Jr. High School student. If I could give negative stars, I would

                                    I found this book inspirational.
I purchased a copy for my son. I hope he reads it. It is a truly important book and the story itself is a unique experience. At a period of history that showed mans inhumanity to man at its worst, this book rose above the human capacity for evil and has a modern day application.
That application is simple the authors (Marion Pretzels) attitude to life
I found more relevent than any self-help (secrect to success) book I have ever read. The story is written with warmth and pain and is a cronicle not of the injustices he has seen and suffered but a hope for the future.

4 out of 5 stars sobering read of Polish Jew and his wartime escape.......2007-01-08

Marian Pretzel was a young jew living in Lvov in Poland when war broke out in 1939. This is his story, and that of his family told with simplicity and without indulging in over-emotion. The bleakness of the observations make it extremely powerful and moving story.

Pretzel tells of his life in Poland prior to the war, of the Russian invasion and his suddenly increased opportunities, and then the invasion of the Nazi's and the sudden increase in nastiness from the Polish who were once his friends and neighbours. Of bribery, blackmail, violence and the slow descent which eventually led the Jewish population to the concentration camps.

Marian Pretzel got transported to a concentration camp nearby, but managed through luck and the interference of Simon Wiesenthal, to escape. On the run he realised that he could pass as an aryan and his forging skills and knowledge of the right stamps for various things allowed him to be fed, clothed and housed by the Nazis. This is the story of his wartime survival, but it is also tempered with the realisation at the time that despite his survival, thousands, if not millions of other Jews were suffering, starving, dying in cities and concentration camps. He says that the worst thing was the slow death which was wreaked on many, rather than a fast end.

His story makes sobering reading. The guilt of survival has pursued him over the decades, that at times he has had to let his friends, and family go, simply because their will to survive was not greater than their will to remain where they were, or to do rash and idiotic acts which led to their demise. His sister Giza refused to accompany him into flight and did not survive, as many of his friends. Despite their parents already being shipped off to certain death.

A well written memoir which makes disturbing reading. At the end of this I wonder how people can be so cruel - how could so many people act so inhumanly - and with people they already knew. I hope that the experiences from WWII remain with us, that everyone should learn and know what can be, that it never happens again.

                                        Book Description

The Nazis saw film as a major vehicle for both indoctrination and escapist pacification of the masses; in fact, Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels tried to create a German counter-Hollywood. This highly acclaimed study, by one of Germanys leading commentators and authors on cultural policy, analyses the pictorial and spoken language of the various film genres in the Third Reich, including news reels, documentaries, feature and cultural films. It shows how a powerful and sinister propaganda machine emerged which, by deploying a wide range of psychological techniques, exerted a strong fascination on the masses. These methods were so successful that they continue to serve as models for totalitarian rgimes to this day.

                                                  Book Description

This thoughtful and engaging text challenges the widely held notions that science exists outside of society, and that technology proceeds automatically down a singular and inevitable path. Through specific case studies involving contemporary debates, this book shows that science and technology are fundamental parts of, and undeniably shaped by, society.

Drawing on concepts from political sociology, organizational analysis, and contemporary social theory, this book is a first-rate study of technoscience that places power, stratification, and discourse at its center. The author shows how social groups and organizations in powerful positions shape developments in technoscience in significant ways, and how new developments affect people differently depending on class, race, gender, and geographical location. Avoiding dense theoretical debate, this book is ideal for those seeking a fresh approach to science and technology studies.

Few subjects arouse the passions the way the environment does. How will we feed an ever-increasing population and how can that food be made safe for consumption? Who decides how land is developed? How can environmental policies be made fair for everyone, including people of color, women, children, and the poor? These volumes present more than 350 biographies of men and women who have devoted their lives to studying, debating, and organizing over these and other controversial issues over the last 200 years.
