Well Written.......2007-01-05
The book was used for 90% of my class. It well written for the student with little exposure to chemistry. The pictures and diagrams could have better depicted the subject matter. The price was $40 less than what my college bookstore charges. Great value.
Excellent Textbook.......2006-04-19
This is an excellent textbook for a two semester course in General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry for Health Professions. It does a very good job of explaining the concepts of General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry. It also has excellent applications on disease processes and pathophysiology. The organization of each chapter is a plus. I highly recommend this textbook. It is number one!
Excellent Book on Physiological Chemistry.......2006-03-05
This book is exactly as described by the publisher. A very readable overview of general and organic chemistry. A comprehensive study of the organic molecules and chemical processes specific to the human body.
I liked this book so much that I'm ordering a hardcover copy to replace my original paperback edition.
Book Description
This book examines the origin of the present diversity of marine invertebrate animals. A brief review of the early stages in the history of life discusses the time-scale of the relevant geological periods alongside corresponding events in the evolutionary sequence. These views of the early history of life are then matched against the fossil record and conjectures drawn from the living fauna, enabling the author to attempt for the first time an overview of the early diversification of marine animal life. Transitions to the succeeding assemblages of shellbearing fossils in Palaeozoic rocks are discussed and a number of stratigraphic adjustments are suggested for the period in which evolutionary events had their greatest impact on oceans and marine rock strata. The need for an interdisciplinary approach to early evolution is emphasized.

admirable balance of tactics and historical context........1999-04-09
Ginn from Arizona has written a fitting summary for Fuller's book. I would like to add my appreciation for the author's balance of the historical context with a complete account of the tactics, battle plans, decisions, and actions that carried the battles for one side over another.
I teach history on the college level, and while most textbooks teach the causes and effects of wars or battles, they sacrifice the details due to consideration of space. In many cases, the details of military conflicts pique students' interest in the event, and aid in remembering the impact of particular clashes or struggles. Yet most military histories overload readers on detail, as if the battle is the whole story. Fuller strikes a wonderful balance between the two purposes, and his book has earned a place of considerable importance on my reference shelf.
A must-read for anyone interested in western civilization........1998-08-21
War is perhaps the one social aspect that has influenced history more than any other. From the Greeks, to Alexander, to the Roman Empire, entire civilizations have been established or toppled by war. As such, any person who wishes to truly understand human history, and in particular, the history of western civilization, should at least be familiar with the military aspect.
Fuller was a general in the British army, and he displays complete mastery of the causes, strategies, and the repercussions of the most important battles in history. This first volume concentrates on ancient warfare up to the naval battle of Lepanto in the 15th century.
What makes the reading so fascinating is that Fuller not only summarizes the important battles, but he frames them within their context in how they influenced and changed history. Preceding each major military struggle is a short summary of the conditions which laid the groundwork for the battle. Additionally, Fuller concludes each chapter with a short analysis of the historical repercussions of the battle. It is here where you will learn why Alexander the Great's victory over Darius and the Persian Army was the most influential battle ever fought, or how how Rome slowly disintegrated after the reign of Julius Caesar, or what the effects of the fall of Constantinople were on Europe at the end of the Middle Ages.
This is the first volume of a three-volume set which chronicles the major wars up to World War II. I can think of no other written account of military history which is at once so encompassing, and yet so readable. Highly recommended!

If you want to have a brief understanding of the military history of the western world, this book is the one you needed. Enjoy it! The whole series has three volume. From Earliest Times to W.W.II. Get them all on your bookshelf!

Good Research Does Not Always Produce a Good Book.......2006-01-15
Watts' book is a series of related essays about the social construction of 6 major diseases. He has poured years of research into this work. The thesis of each chapter is fascinating, and most may well be correct. For example, he posits that biblical leprosy was not Hansen's Disease, and further that medieval leprosy was a social category, and that the "lepers" of that time did not have the disease. There could be something to this.
But this book cannot do better than raise the questions. There are both scientific and historical aspects to this book, but the editing did not bring the writing close to scientific standards. Many generalizations are based on a single piece of evidence. Primary sources are cited without considering that the author's comments may have been self-serving.
Epidemics and History loses its way badly when it tries to intuit the intentions of groups of people, rather than letting their actions speak for themselves. A word count would reveal unusually high frequencies for "desire," "intention," "understanding," "perception," and so forth. I wonder to what extent groups of people through history have been aware of themselves as groups, as the book assumes throughout. Further, it tries to inflame with unnecessary emotive language. Pity.
Academic anti-imperialism was the wrong voice for this work. Watts' research is interesting, theses provocative. But the writing is all wrong. Where were the editors?
If you are interested in the history of disease, you do want to know what Watts says. But the flawed writing makes this a frustrating read.
From a different point of view.......2005-10-04
Seldon Watts embarked on a very difficult and higly political issue. You may agree or disagree that imperialist powers used contagious diseases as yet another weapon but everyone has to agree that this is a new perspective in viewing history. For example, i was amazed by his analysis in Leprosy and found it to be logic, even though i don't have his sources available. Sometimes the scientific data seem a bit weak but if you want details on each and every disease there other books to consult. This book talks about politics.
I see this great book as a cry from a scientist of the ''Third world'' who reminds that science (and charity) is not as neutral as we sometimes consider it to be. Personally i believe it is a ''must'', even if you disagree with the author politically.
Anti-imperialist screed.......2000-01-21
Sheldon Watts took us on a journey of exploration of a gigantic subject, followed his political views and lost his way. This book wants to put such a strong spin on disease as as an element of conquest, that it neglects and distorts too many facts. You can usually find the distortions by noting which paragraphs contain statements that treat some previously unknown fact as common knowledge and then not finding an end note providing some references. I also noted that most of the sources for the book were less than ten years old, and were often teritiary. Sheldon Watts also gets his biological facts wrong on many occasions, usually when trying to underline some action he feels is imperialist. His most unpardonable sin has to be attributing current knowledge to figures who had no such understanding, and then judging their actions using that assumption. For example, he assumes that since people understood that smallpox was communicable, that they had to understand that all diseases were communicable. This was long before Koch or even Snow. And Sheldon Watts does this even though he acknowledges that medical knowledge was effectively non-existant until the mid-1800s. Unless of course it is folk wisdom that he is talking about, which gets a pass, no matter how silly. If you are a Powerful White Man, on the other hand, you are assumed to be omniscient.
If you want a more limited treatment about the subject of diseases and public thought, I suggest that you try "The Cholera Years" by Charles E. Rosenberg. If you want a good treatment of multiple diseases and their biological progression around the world, try "Plagues" by Christopher Wills. Those two books together will cost less than this one, and you'll learn more. And they are far, far more readable.
An excellent treatise, marred by lapses into indignation.......1999-08-20
This work is impressive in its breadth of scholarship, but the author's personal rancor at Europeans' ill treatment of the rest of the world detracts from the narrative. The descriptions of the decimation of the Taino, the Aztecs, Inca and others within a century by the Spanish is truly horrific. Repeatedly referring to the Spanish as "terrorists" weakens, rather than reinforces the point. They were not terrorists: they were behaving as Europeans historically have. The author's succinct explanation of the reasons for the Spanish attitudes toward New World peoples makes his subsequent indignation with their actions curious, to say the least. Similarly, his explanation of malaria and yellow fever is extensive, but his indignation at Europeans in response to the diseases detracts from his scholarship. That Europeans are arrogant, naive, biased, pig-headed, murderous and short-sighted should come as no revelation to anyone reading this book. Other peoples in the world are too, but they didn't all have the opportunity to impose their will on others. To complement this work, Diamond's Guns Germs and Steel,and MacNeill's The Rise of the West, and Plagues and Peoples cover much of the same ground and posit theories how Europeans came to be in a position to impose their will on much of the rest of the world. Overall, a very interesting book, which would be better without these occasional, distracting polemics.
solid and interesting.......1999-06-23
I found this book an excellent companion to earlier books on the subject (McNeill, Crosby), as it puts diseases in human society in a historic social/cultural and political context. I started out sceptical but then got caught by the book and its analyis was for me an eye-opener on how (Western) medicine was a tool often used for ends that had nothing to do with physical well-being, sickness prevention and care. The end conclusions on economics and health economics i do not share at all, i think the author gets carried away a bit and goes way too fast to condemn economists here, (guess what my profession is). Definitely worth while.

Archaeoastronomy is a discipline pioneered at Stonehenge and other megalithic sites in Britain and France. Many sites in the southwestern United States have yielded evidence of the prehistoric Anasazi's intense interest in astronomy, similar to that of the megalithic cultures of Europe.
The authors describe the astronomical alignments at the well-known sites of Chaco Canyon and Hovenweep and present new evidence, based on recent field work of alignments at Yellow Jacket, Chimney Rock, and Mesa Verde.
Drawing on the archaeological evidence, ethnographical parallels with historic pueblo peoples, and mythology from other cultures around the world, the authors present theories about the meaning and function of the mysterious stone alignments and architectural orientations of the prehistoric Southwest.

With an Eye to the Sky.......2006-05-03
Malville and Putnam bring an interesting and informative study with "Prehistoric Astronomy in the Southwest" (1993). As a means of understanding the now long disappeared life of the ancient Anasazi people the authors review several southwestern prehistoric Native American sites from an astronomy viewpoint.
With an eye to the sky, Malville and Putnam study Chaco Canyon (New Mexico), Hovenweep (Utah), Chimney Rock (New Mexico) Yellow Jacket (Utah), and Mesa Verde (Colorado), to form the basis of their scientific conclusions. The authors talk about the similarities and differences between each archaeological site. They make several informed suggestions about corner windows (page 35), sunrooms (page 39), the significance of carved spirals on cliff dwelling walls (page 44), ancient Anasazi male and female industry (page 52), T-shaped doorways (page 92), and much more. They think Anasazi life was continuously influenced by celestial activity and portents.
Proving conclusively that the ancients were fervent sky watchers, Malville and Putnam consider the subterranean Kiva, found at nearly all Anasazi locations, to be the principal astronomical symbol. This community central structure may have represented the center of the ancient cosmos. Much of Anasazi belief and living pattern may have focused around what happened in the Kiva as representative for what was seen in the sky.
Although this book is small (108 total paperback pages) its science is well documented (with 6 pages of endnotes). It offers dozens of black and white photos, sky charts, maps and illustrations (of particular interest is page 14's illustrated method for using a gnomon to locate "true north").
This is a very good book. It inspired family tours to most of its study locations (Yellow Jacket is unaccessible to the general public). Malville and Putnam is a must read for all students of the southwest, ancient astronomy buffs, and students of Native American archaeology. Amazon.com's price is good. Get your copy soon.
