When millennial spiritual hunger replaces '90s infinite perfectibility as the trend du jour, self-help guru Ashton Robinson is there to catch the breaking wave. He's a surfer--a handsome, dreadlocked black Yale grad with a palatable message ("Try Harder") and no real convictions to capsize his motivational juggernaut. Then one night while he's tripping on a heady blend of expired cough suppressant and primo weed, a gender-bending Brazilian midget turns up, seduces him, and delivers this message: "You're hiding your ashay.... God chose you and only you to bring the world to the future. It will be a lonely and difficult journey, but you can do it." Ashton does enough spotty research to find out that axe (pronounced ashay) is more or less the Yoruba equivalent of chi--spiritual life force--as expressed in the Afro-Cuban-Brazilian traditions of Candomble, Santeria, and Vodun. To this he adds a much more rigorous pursuit of Tantric sex, collects a handful of true believers, and converts his California bachelor pad into the residential headquarters of a New Age cult, complete with GAP uniforms and cough syrup sacraments.

Ashton's community eventually comes undone, thanks to intrinsic jealousies and extrinsic envy--as such social-spiritual experiments historically do. But before things fall apart, Ellis pokes some pointed fun at the psychosexual shortcomings of white males and writes a lot of ebullient ménage à many sex scenes, during which Ashton reserves his bodily fluids while manipulating his female devotées to hours-long continuous orgasm. Right Here, Right Now claims to be the transcription of Ashton's ongoing conversation with his pocket tape recorder. This narrative device may provide less subtle character inflection than Ellis intended, but it does assure that the cult's strong suit and the novel's are one and the same--more kinky, invigorating sex than the Heaven's Gate gang ever imagined. --Joyce Thompson

I didn't really kow where this book was going to go. It takes you in weird whirlwind, to where you don't know if the hero is hallucinating, or is actually an enlightened spirirual master. You keep asking whether this guy is a nut or is he on to something.I really liked how Ellis keeps you guessing. It's really weird how the two bes fiction books of last year came out of Ssanta Cruz, this along with Brauner's 'Love songs of the tone deaf', is a very impressive display of literary talent in one town. Buy this book, you'll love it

Trey Ellis has lifted African Americans out of America's social-spiritual background. At the same time he has exposed the nasty underside of a tempting, yet clearly dangerous, avenue for finding "one's self".

In addition, however, rhrn is a primer for those with the, uh, might I say, golden tongue. One takes a chance on either side of the divide and some like it both ways.

Read trey's new book. It's about a self-help guru who goes a little too far for society's taste as he veers from "acceptable" behavior into the realm of megalomaniacal and quasi-mystical dillusion. In the process he drags along a bunch of gullible, souls who think all the big answers flow from his golden throat and his prodigious, erm...karma. How does the main character, Austin, an upper class African-American, go from a being relatively normal, if some what over achieving motivational speaker, to a man hunted by the feds for debunking dim middle class rubes out of their money and their wives...? It's a journey marked by wasted human lives and many empty cases of Evian water. We can see the end coming, but Trey gives us such a wickedly obnoxious blend of pretense and idiocy, that we can't help laughing all the way.

It takes a special brand of courage to operate as a sniper in combat - but Gary Mitchell displayed greater courage in telling his story. This book is absorbing and is the first 'real' portrayal of post traumatic stress syndrome that I have read. Every war produces many unsung heroes - Gary Mitchell is one of them.

A Supposed Non-Fiction: Long On PTSD, Short On Facts.......2006-12-18

In "A Sniper's Journey" Gary Mitchell (with Michael Hirsh) lays out a supposed story about a small-town Texas youngster, new to the Army, who is pulled into the Phoenix covert program as a sniper in Viet Nam. In fairness, the reviewer is far more familiar with the Marine's program, but this overall story simply did not seem to ring true to a real sniper's techniques and mental processes from that long-ago time.

Possibly as much as a third of the book deals with Mitchell's domestic problems with his wives and for filler, outlined a primer on PTSD. All this was "part of his journey" I suppose, but of marginal interest to outsiders.

We should thank Mr. Mitchell for his 24-year service to our country, but in respect for the fine Army snipers, the great Carlos Hathcock and other 'Corps "One Shot-One Kill" shooters from the past, I cannot recommend this book.

PTSD Essay, more than a 'scoop' on the sniper's experience.......2006-04-13

I had great hopes in enjoying a book about the sniper's world as pertains to the CIA and its contracting out shooters from the ranks..having met a few through my years overseas. As it was I found the copy more of a recollection of events that are lost to history and emotional blocking: it was way too convenient memory-wise to have the first two kills both have scars above the eye--the officer and the woman...please!

Still, I can recommend this book, as I found it to have a similar PTSD section to my own memoir that is also available on Amazon. I like the variety in letter responses from different PhDs specializing in the recognition of PTSD and treatment...which is what I can see resulted in Mitchell's book...considering the topic I sure wish I could give it more stars, but this was very thin in description and clarity of rememberance...a very far departure from Valentine's co-written pieces.

I would suggest getting this book, as I did, to read the PTSD and then resell it on Amazon, which is what I'm preparing to do right now...the 3 stars are mainly for the PTSD section.

Probably Stolen Valor material.......2006-04-11

Whenever I see a veteran start to opine about his PTSD, it sends up a red flag for me, especially when mixed with assassination stuff.

The book deals with a guy who was selected for a very short sniper school while in Vietnam, and he then is sent into the field in order to basically assassinate people. He also claims the word "sniper" was never once used during his training.

As I read on, my suspicions were confirmed when he described being assinged to the "2nd Battalion, 7th Infantry", (in the 1st Cav Div), which he also described as "the Garry Ownen battalion". Now those two gaffes right there show me he's a poseur. And I don't think you can hang that one on his ghost writer, who also allegedly was in VN.

He also slipped up later, when he described being shown a photo of his intended target, who had a scar over his eye. After dispatching that guy, a couple missions later he looks through his scope and identifies a female he is supposed to snipe, and he recognizes her by a scar over her eye. Oops! The other thing is: you can not expect me to believe that he could just be given a photo to examine for a few seconds. That's ridiculous.

Yeah, the book is a joke and the last half of it has a bunch of useless filler about PTSD etc.

Having worked with snipers in Viet Nam, I can assure you that this book doesn't have any relationship to the real thing.
Reader's Digest condensed version would read - Served in the Army, collected some war stories, wrote a book with a grabber title (and little else), made money.
This guy is right out of "Stolen Valor".

Nature of reality:
The nature of reality has been the subject for debate since Plato. The philosopher and scientist has been tantalized, while artists were mused.
Physics has pioneered alternate interpretations of the 'reality' of different experiential domains, but they cannot be applied to inner experiences or meaningful behavior. "Here, constructions of reality are needed that make the data from these realms lawful, not constructions borrowed from other realms," state Margenau, a physicist and LeShan, a Psychologist, who together hold that one set of rules is insufficient as a reality measure, it is a must to have sufficient valid applicable data. A number of alternate realities must be allowed for, in order to make significant strides in science. They specify five principles: sensory realm; microcosm, too small to be sensed ; the macrocosm, too large to be even theoretically sensed ; human inner experience, and meaningful units of behavior of living things. Our organization of reality is what we observe of it and different organizations of it work best for different purposes. However, it must be organized lawfully, not whimsically; "reality is somehow there, but we alloy it into being with our consciousness".

Einstein & Van Gogh:
Einstein and Van Gogh represent the western genius in science and arts' cultural and philosophical milieu, that developed into precise systems that explain reality in a literal sense. Those systems evolved to satisfy a human necessity to exert an ever increasing control of the environment. The metaphysical experience was not taken into consideration, and those explanation fell short of presenting a holistic reality.
In an often quoted passage, novelist and essayist Arthur Koestler wrote, "Einstein's space is no closer to reality than Van Gogh's sky. The glory of science is not a truth more absolute than the truth of Bach or Tolstoy... The scientist's discoveries impose his own order on chaos, as the composer or painter imposes his; an order that always refers to limited aspects of reality. Einstein's space is certainly closer to the world 'out there' than is Van Gogh's sky. But Van Gogh's sky is closer to our inner world. We must find ways to make these two worlds, these two visions of reality, mutually reinforcing. Artist-in-residence programs at scientific research institutions can help."

Indigenous soil and water conservation practices are rarely acknowledged in the design of conventional development projects. Instead, the history of soil and water conservation in Africa has been one of imposing external solutions without regard for local practice. There is a remarkably diverse range of locally developed and adapted technologies for the conservation of water and soil, well suited to their particular site and socio-economic conditions. But such measures have been ignored, and sometimes even overturned, by external solutions.
" Sustaining the Soil" documents farmers' practices, exploring the origins and adaptations carried out by farmers over generations, in response to changing circumstances. Through a comparative analysis of conservation measures - from the humid zones of West Africa to the arid lands of the Sudan, from rock terraces in Morocco to the grass strips of Swaziland - the book explores the various factors that influence adoption and adaptation; farmers' perceptions of conservation needs; and the institutional and policy settings most favourable to more effective land husbandry.
