Book Description
In this book, Frederick P. Lewis examines the legacy of the Warren Court, analyzing why the court's activism survived largely intact despite the efforts of four Republican presidents over a 20-year period to replace activist federal judges with jurists committed to judicial restraint. The Context of Judicial Activism will be a valuable resource for students and scholars of twentieth century constitutional history and the judicial process.

Book Description
Until now, individuals wishing to identify British insects have had to choose between the difficult-to-find specialist keys published in obscure literature, and the misleadingly simplistic popular guides, which cover only a fraction of the species. This book bridges the gap, providing expert guidance through the taxonomic maze. This resource contains an introduction to each group of organisms, as well as over 2,000 references selected as being the most useful and up to date for accurate identification, together with notes on their relevance and coverage. An additional chapter covers the understanding and retrieval of scientific references, with advice on using libraries and other information services. This will be an essential reference book for anyone involved in insect and arachnid identification.

Book Description
The Coal Industry of the Former USSR presents a two-part study of coal supply systems and development of the industry in the territory of the former USSR. The first part covers the role of coal in the economy, provides an overview of current status and forecast of the eight major coal basins and environmental problems associated with the industry. It concludes with a discussion of the principles and problems related to the development of regional energy problems. The second part covers technological advances and development of coal carbonization, gasification, liquefaction and agglomeration. The book ends with a discussion on how to improve efficiency and information on coal waste utilization.
Customer Reviews:
Very comprehensive.......2006-03-23
I am not an expert or professionally involved in the mining industry but I bought this book for an overview of a particular sector of the FSU economy. It is extremely professionally produced and contains all the information you could want on this particular branch. It does not extensively explore the economy of coal mining in Russia/Ukraine/ other ex-FSU states after the end of the soviet government but that is understandable given the dislocation of the governments in the new states and its detrimental impact on statistical gathering and info. If you are at all involved in the coal industry or just interested in a detailed technical account of the state of the soviet planning/management/development process as seen from a single sector, I would recommend this book.
Book Description
Retired demon hunter Kate Connor must go back to work when she spots a demon lurking in the local Wal-Mart. But she'd better not arouse suspicion. This kind of thing could really hurt her husband's political career.
Customer Reviews:
Carpe Demon doesn't make it.......2007-09-20
Carpe Demon was a very uninteresting book. There was no character development, each person in the book was bland, without any individual personality. Things happened slowly.
Carpe the Fun!.......2007-09-04
Kate Connor, suburban stay-at-home mom to two, thinks her demon hunting days are behind her. She's been retired for fifteen years and she likes her life as it is...teenaged daughter, two-year-old son, politically-minded husband, and the daily duties of a housewife. Unfortunately, the demons have come to the California town of San Diablo, and Kate's the only Hunter to be found. So much for retirement.
Kenner's plot is fairly simple and straightforward: Kate's got to find out what Head Demon Goramesh is seeking in her town and get it safely to the Vatican. Kate's got to be on her guard constantly, and her fears for her family and community are well-founded. Kenner's given us some interesting supporting characters as well, including Eddie (rescued from the nursing home!), Laura the best buddy, and Cutter, the fabulous martial arts instructor. Of course the storyline is over the top, but the twists toward the end make this a fun, quick romp as we follow Kate righteously kick demon butt.
If you're searching for serious, scary demonic possession, this book won't satisfy the bill. Kenner treats most of her plot quite lightly, and often takes Kate into housewife overdrive, keeping her bouncing between projects and actually hostessing two spur-of-the-moment cocktail dinners for her husband Stuart (I'd have killed him, personally). There were a few issues for me, including the saint-like reaction of Stuart to Kate suddenly thrusting their two-year-old into day care without his knowledge and then springing an elderly stranger from a nursing home, bringing him into their own home to live, perhaps permanently. While I can stretch my mind around these points because, after all, we're talking Demon-Hunting Housewife here, I did wish the author would keep inside the realm of possibility when dealing with humans. However, this is indeed a fast, fun read, and I'm looking forward to the other entries in the series.
Too Neat and Tidy.......2007-08-24
The book did remind a lot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, season one. The heroine resembles Buffy with blonde hair, California living, and the occasional witty quip. It has lots of pages about her kids and normal household responsibilities, ending up more about being a Soccer Mom than being a Demon Hunter.
I'm not a soccer Mom, I'm a guy who likes reading supernatural fantasy and horror. This novel was in the SF/Fantasy section at Borders, and I'm unsure it belongs there. It is a mixture of urban fantasy (demons in modern California) and chick lit (the life of a Soccer Mom). It felt a lot like toned down paranormal romance, since the heroine is married.
Characterization is ditzy, since it's written from the perspective of a main character a lot like Buffy, a ditzy blonde herself. The handling of the supernatural badness is too pat. Kate fits the demony stuff into her busy schedule, and it never interrupts what she is doing to such an extent she had to drop everything. Kate never gets in trouble disposing of dead demon corpses, and never gets wounded in combat despite being retired and out of shape. A major plot point is her husband doesn't know she's a former demon hunter, and I can't help thinking if she really loved him she tell him the truth. Ironically, the author writes how worried Kate is about her family being targeted, yet she doesn't tell them why she suddenly wants them to be careful. Retired, mature Buffy would own up, and actually tell the truth to help protect her family. She'd also start to carry hidden weapons once danger materialized... hello Kate?
I give it three stars... it is a fluffy book and I thought too hard about the plot.
Funny, awesome book.......2007-08-19
Loved this book. I'm not normally a paranormal reader. You couldn't make me read about vampires or demons or whatever... but I like funny and a friend recommended this one. I really enjoyed it. Liked the brisk dialogue and engaging characters.

There is nothing better than a romantic comedy that incorporates the paranormal, and Julie Kenner has penned a jackpot winner with CARPE DEMON. At times laugh-out-loud funny, once I started reading this book I couldn't put it down until I finished the last page-and then I wished it wasn't the end.
Kate Connor, on the surface, appears to be a pretty normal suburban mom. Mother to fourteen-year-old Alison and two-year-old Timmy, wife of Stuart, an assistant county attorney, and all-around chauffeur, nanny, housekeeper, and family pep squad rolled into one. It wasn't always that way, though. Kate was once a Level Four Demon Hunter, although no one knows it. It's the secret of secrets, and for the most part, Kate's pretty happy keeping it that way. Until one day, while shopping with the kids at the local Wal-Mart in San Diablo , California , she spots a demon.
Immediately, all sorts of questions are raised. Why would a demon willingly come to San Diablo? And, in fact, was it a demon at all? And does it have anything at all to do with her?
Sadly, Kate realizes way too soon that she's going to be forced out of demon-hunting retirement. Incorporeal demon Goramesh has come to California with one goal in mind, and it's up to Kate to figure out what he wants, find it before he does, rescue it, and send Goramesh back where he belongs.
Sounds easy, right? Not really, especially when you can't tell anyone what you're doing, including your husband, best friend, or children. Balancing home life has always been tricky enough, but now that there are murderous demons following her around, dodging her every step, life has become even more complicated.
I've heard that some readers have compared this story to a sort of Buffy the Vampire Slayer read, but I didn't get that feeling at all. What I read was a hilarious story of a stay-at-home-mom whose past comes back to bite her on the butt, with the risks being even higher than ever. For anyone who has ever been bored with their life, or has secrets from the past that they just wish would stay there, this book is for you.
Not to mention that it's just an all-around enjoyable story from a very talented author. Pick up a copy of CARPE DEMON today-you won't be disappointed.

Book Description
In October 1973, the State of Israel was invaded by Egyptian and Syrian forces. Despite early losses, Israel managed to outfight its opponents. The brief and bloody Yom Kippur War stands as a unique chapter in modern military history. Fought primarily by tank units, the war became a story not only of battle strategy and tactics, but also one of human discipline, endurance and sacrifice. While many historians have chronicled the events of the Yom Kippur War, few have been seasoned by actual combat. Avigdor Kahalani, commander of a tank battalion on the Golan Heights during the Yom Kippur War, describes this experience in The Heights of Courage. Beginning with a description of the initial Syrian offensive, he recounts the personal endeavors of his men, their fears and their ambitions, as well as their emotional and physical hardships. His stark account traces the efforts of the Israel Armored Corps as they struggle to overcome extreme difficulties and setbacks. The author describes their ultimate penetration into enemy territory and their approach to within forty kilometers of Damascus.
Customer Reviews:
A Must Read.......2005-03-05
I have served in Iraq and Kosovo as an officer in the US Army and this is one of the best accounts of Tank Warfare I have ever come across. It was mandatory reading in my Military History Class at West Point.
After reading this book, I felt as if I had walked in the author's shoes and seen the war from his prospective. I could not believe that his Brigade Commander gave him only a few hours to attack into Syria.... amazing.
What is truly compelling to learn how Israelis viewed this war in a much different way from Americans. If an American is sent to war, it usually requires a one week boat ride or a 24 hour+ flight. Loved ones are a distant memory an ocean away. For the author and his men, defeat meant that their wives and children would die too, for they were living only a few hours behind the front line soldiers.
A hero of Israel tells his story .......2004-11-23
I read this book in Hebrew. Avigdor Kahalani is one of the great soldiers in the history of Israel. He was close to death from wounds on the field of battle, and yet came back to fight another war. The action of Kahalani and his men on the Golan Heights during the first days of the Yom Kippur War helped save the State of Israel. Kahalani is a soldier's soldier who does not idealize war but presents it in all its confusion, disorder, dirt and difficulty. He tells his story straightforwardly and clearly . Those more experienced than myself have said that this is one of the best books about combat that they have ever read. It is also a book about real heroism and character and how they truly do exist in the world.
Best of its Kind.......2004-01-12
I've never read a better personal narrative than Kahalani's "Heights of Courage." Without question, it's the finest combat memoir ever written by an Israeli soldier. Kahalani's blow-by-blow account of fending off successive waves of Syrian T-55's and T-62's is fascinating. Perhaps more importantly, his story is invaluable for its detailed descriptions of the physiological effects of modern mechanized combat. Fatigue, confusion, exhaustion, the entire gamut of the sensory experience of fighting (and leading) from inside a tank is covered in detail. I can't understand why a similar book by an American Gulf War veteran hasn't yet been published. For professional reading or personal study, "Heights of Courage" is highly recommended.
First hand account of fighting on Golan Heights in '73 war........2002-11-24
Undoubtedly this is one of the greatest, most well written battle stories of our time. This is an excellent first-hand account by one who was there and experienced the fighting from beginning to end. A brilliant book written from the vantage point of the men actually fighting on the front line.
This is the absorbing story of a Unit Commander of Battalion 77 of the Israeli Army, fighting against incredible odds against numerically superior and better equipped Syrian forces on the Golan Heights, during the Yom Kippur War of 1973.
The author, Avigdor Kahalani (who received Israel's highest military decoration - the Medal Of Honour), reveals and transmits the fears, traumas and other aspects of human behaviour experienced during the often unbearable stresses of battle.
We are provided with detailed accounts of how a few courageous men and their leaders, prevailed against desperate, apparently insurmountable odds.
This in the context of a failure by Israel to recognise the Arab threat, to sufficiently mobilise in time and thereby being forced to face immense enemy offensive actions with only a small standing force of regulars.
The author provides an analysis of the tactics used, initially just to contain the Syrian offensive & survive, and then to counter-attack resulting in a victory which forced the Syrians to sue for a ceasefire.
This is the compelling story of an elite brigade, from the Commanding Officer through to the soldiers on the ground, who defeated the Syrian forces and succeeded in destroying all the Syrian tanks that had penetrated the Golan Heights.
A breathless read which proceeds at a lightning pace. I highly recommend this book, it really is a first class read.
I also recommend another book on this subject entitled, "Duel For The Golan; The 100 Hour Battle That Saved Israel" by Jerry Asher/Eric Hammel. To fully understand the Yom Kippur War, one really needs to understand what occurred on the Golan Heights and the possible repercussions of an Israeli defeat. These two books will provide an excellent reference on this subject.
Good book on what was happening from the troops POV..........2002-08-18
Bought this book on the recommendation of a friend and it was a good read. In fact, I read it while on a 12 hour flight from Europe to the southwestern US. Parts of it kind of dragged on, but overall it was a good story about what happened in that war from the point of view of the troops who fought it.

Book Description
In the dozen years since the end of the Cold War, the threat of nuclear, biological or chemical attacks-the "weapons of mass destruction" we have become familiar with-being unleashed against civilian populations has loomed ever larger. A deadly combination of shortsighted mistakes by Western governments, chaos in the former Soviet Union, and virulent international terrorism has succeeded in making us all far more vulnerable than many would like to admit. Avoiding Armageddon is a world citizen's guide to the worst possible threats to our individual and national security-from easily accessible uranium to smallpox outbreaks to a new breed of suicide bomber-and what we can do to save ourselves, our country and the planet.
Published in conjunction with the eight-hour PBS series, Avoiding Armageddon focuses our attention like never before on threats posed by terrorism and unsecured weapons of mass destruction. It delves into an exploration of those who endanger our national interest, the forms their threats might take, and what can be done to avert the kinds of disasters likely to ensue.
Drawing on numerous interviews with world leaders, experts, former terrorists and would-be nuclear thieves, Martin Schram explain how and why biological, chemical, and nuclear warfare may very well be our next nightmare. Reporting from hot spots around the globe, Avoiding Armageddon is a riveting and sober story of America and the world's vulnerability in an age of terrorism. Impeccably researched and compellingly written, it offers an original assessment of how the threats and solutions are intertwined-and how world leaders and citizens must act boldly to assure our personal, national, and global security.
Customer Reviews:
A good book...if you're a Democrat.......2003-06-28
I was very disappointed with this book. I was looking for a comprehensive review of all of the issues associated with WMD proliferation...something evenly balancing conservative and liberal policies/viewpoints and accomplishments over time (no one's perfect with respect to this stuff). But instead this book reads like a Clinton re-election speech. Should have known since it was funded by Ted Turner Documentaries.
To save you a little time (and money), let me summarize the main points in the book:
- Nunn-Lugar Act is good (that's the only bipartisan point I agreed with)
- Clinton's blanket waiver policy for the Russians to comply with Nunn-Lugar is good
- Bush's insistence that Russia comply before receiving billions of US $'s is bad
- Anything that Clinton did was good...and Gore would have kept it going
- Anything that either Bush did was bad...and Reagan was 50/50
That's about it. I just saved you from reading 330 pages of Democratic eyewash masquerading as journalism...unless that's what you're looking for. In that case, it'll be a good book for you.
World issues...analysis and solutions....one view.......2003-04-14
In a classic example to the power of anecdotal style of writing for discussing "serious" issues, Schram is successful in conveying the perils faced by the world (mostly from the Western, and more specifically from the US point of view). The book has been organized into distinct and independent sections covering various aspects of the terrorist threats. The author does manage to convey important ideas and some potential solutions (mostly utopian dreams) to the problems identified in each section (the identification of the problem and the analysis of the origins of the problems are well discussed and documented). Of particular interest were the section on nuclear threat in the South Asia, and the interview with terrorist "planner" from Al-Queda. In the former, the author provides a chilling array fo scenarios of what could happen if indeed a nuclear war does erupt in South Asia. The dangers of "fog of war" , quoting mostly Pakistani army personnel and US analysts makes for some compelling reading. The section also provides an interesting account of how the two main players - India and Pakistan became nuclear players from the seemingly innocent "atoms of peace" program. The role of the West (particularly US and Canada) in the case of India and the role of China (in Pakistan's program) is well discussed. The author fails to provide any "reasonable and practical" solutions to defuse the tense situations. The same holds true for most of the book - good discussions on problem statement and description, fairly good analysis, not-so-great proposed solution methods. There is also a section on what ordinary citizens and "world leaders" can do to decrease the threats mentioned in the book..makes for some interesting reading, but doubtful if any foreign policy framers would abide by it, given the political framework the foreign poliocy decisions have to depend on.
Overall, the book is well-organized, written for easy reading, avoids political hyperboles (though a tinge of leftist agenda is noticable at times), and provides an excellent summary pf the origins of most of the current threats we face as a world . A must read for anyone remotely interested in current affairs, foreign policy and modern history.

Book Description
Event history analysisùa method for explaining why some people are more likely to experience a particular event, transition, or change than other peopleùhas been useful in the social sciences for studying the processes of social change. One of the main difficulties, however, in using this technique is that often information is (partially) missing on some of the relevant variables. Author Jeroen K. Vermunt presents a general approach to these missing data problems in event history analysis that is based on the similarities between log-linear, hazard, and event history models. The book begins with a discussion of log-linear, log-rate, and modified path models and methods for obtaining maximum likelihood estimates of the parameters of these models. Vermunt then shows how to incorporate variables with missing information in log-linear models for non-response. In addition, he covers such topics as the main types of hazard models; censoring; the use of time-varying covariates; models for competing risks; multivariate hazard models; and a general approach for dealing with missing data problems, including unobserved heterogeneity, measurement error in the dependent variable, measurement error in the covariate, partially missing information on the dependent variable, and partially observed covariate values.
