A Must-Read Book for any Financial Professional.......2001-04-21
I was skeptical that another book could be different than any other on this same subject, but was I wrong - this is a "must-read" book for any financial professional, accountant, CPA and appraisal expert who conducts online research and looks for in-depth information. Lang and Tudor have outdone themselves. Bravo to a world-class effort! One piece of information in the first chapter alone more than covered the cost of the book.

Book Description
The Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) is an event of historic proportions with far-reaching implications in the years to come. The essays in
EMU, Financial Markets and the World Economy provide an analysis of several theoretical and policy issues associated with these implications. They are organized under four broad issues. First, the likely consequences of the euro for the international monetary system is analyzed, its role as an international currency and the level and long-run volatility of its rate of exchange against other major currencies. Second, the potential long-run impact of EMU on European capital markets, diversification opportunities, and the analytical framework for equity and fixed income analysts are explored. Third, macroeconomic policy issues resulting from the institutional design of EMU are investigated. Finally, the possible impact of EMU on countries outside the euro area is discussed, particularly on countries in Central and Eastern Europe, in the Mediterranean basin, in Africa, and in the Middle East.

Book Description
It is unanimously accepted that the quantum and the classical descriptions of the physical reality are very different, although any quantum process is "mysteriously" transformed through measurement into an observable classical event. Beyond the conceptual differences, quantum and classical physics have a lot in common. And, more important, there are classical and quantum phenomena that are similar although they occur in completely different contexts. For example, the Schrödinger equation has the same mathematical form as the Helmholtz equation, there is an uncertainty relation in optics very similar to that in quantum mechanics, and so on; the list of examples is very long. Quantum-classical analogies have been used in recent years to study many quantum laws or phenomena at the macroscopic scale, to design and simulate mesoscopic devices at the macroscopic scale, to implement quantum computer algorithms with classical means, etc. On the other hand, the new forms of light – localized light, frozen light – seem to have more in common with solid state physics than with classical optics. So these analogies are a valuable tool in the quest to understand quantum phenomena and in the search for new (quantum or classical) applications, especially in the area of quantum devices and computing.

Book Description
The history of quantum theory is a maze of conceptual problems, through which Olivier Darrigol provides a lucid and learned guide, tracking the role of formal analogies between classical and quantum theory. From Planck's first introduction of the quantum of action to Dirac's formulation of quantum mechanics, Darrigol illuminates not only the history of quantum theory but also the role of analogies in scientific thinking and theory change.
Unlike previous works, which have tended to focus on qualitative, global arguments, Darrigol's study follows the lines of mathematical reasoning and symbolizing and so is able to show the motivations of early quantum theorists more precisely--and provocatively--than ever before. Erudite and original, From c-Numbers to q-Numbers sets a new standard as a philosophically perceptive and mathematically precise history of quantum mechanics. For years to come it will influence historical and philosophical discussions of twentieth-century physics.
Book Description
Ellen Franck isn't in love with Big Bird. After all, he's a big yellow Sesame Street character -- and she's an intelligent single woman with a fabulous job. On the other hand, Big Bird is looking like a better candidate for fatherhood every day: he's tall, affectionate, and steadily employed. And right now, for Ellen, thirty-five years old and dying to have a baby, almost any father will do.
In her hilarious and heartbreaking new novel, Laura Zigman, bestselling author of
Animal Husbandry, explores what happens when the life we've chosen isn't that life we expected it to be. And at this point Ellen Franck is rethinking all her choices.
Mired in a relationship with a man who is better at brooding than breeding, sister to a woman who can't seem to stop having babies, and working under a boss who is about to have the baby shower of the decade, Ellen knows the path to motherhood is clear. All she has to do is leave her relationship, horrify her family, find an anonymous father, and become independently wealthy.
Piece of cake.
Customer Reviews:
A truly asinine novel........2007-08-08
"Dating Big Bird" features an annoying protagonist with a fierce desire to have a baby. Undoubtedly, this character would raise any child to be as whiny and useless as she is. Her preoccupation with "the Pickle" and Big Bird border on pathological. After detesting "Animal Husbandry," I shouldn't have expected anything different from this book.
I wanted to love it..........2007-02-23
I love Animal Husbandry. It may be my favorite recent read, and I wanted to love this book. I didn't. I kept wondering why.
I thought perhaps I couldn't relate to the pain of delayed motherhood. I like to think that I'm a good enough reader that a book doesn't have to speak directly to my personal life experience in order to engage me. Even if that were the case, this character actually does what I do for a living and I've never found this in a book before. Wouldn't that engage me at least a bit? It didn't.
I enjoyed the side characters more than the main character. Her work friend was wonderful. Same with the impoholic writer, he rang very true, though the situation was bizarre--and I liked how bizarre that situation was. At least it was interesting. Her descriptions of her niece's very specific behaviors rang true, but did not particularly entertain me.
I guess what was missing, for me, was a sense of the real emotional core of this main character. She was flat, bleached out, kind of lost. I wondered if having a child to fill up this blankness was going to work for her, but sadly, did not particularly care.
Dating Oscar the Grouch.......2006-04-20
Well, that's what my girlfriend says she does. But I read this, at her suggestion, and thought it was pretty funny and well written. Even though I'm not a 30-something single woman with a biological clock ticking away.
Ole Yella Bastidd.......2006-03-11
I can't say I was entirely shocked by some of the behavior recounted in this one. Rumors have been flying around for years of what was going down on that Children's Television Workshop soundstage.
Culled entirely from hypnosis confessions, several of Big Bird's victims come forward and tell of their experiences at the hands of this madman. At this point, we're all familiar with BB's quirks. Shame, lawsuits, and disease just seem to follow this guy around. I'm a little tired of it, and a lot of the material is old news. The more famous stories weren't interesting anymore. After all, we've heard them a million times. Who wants to hear again about Grover and that mule? Or how our protagonist got the nickname "Birdy Sanchez?"
The really telling stories were of the lesser known episodes in BB's life. I, for one, didn't know he grew up in a jail brothel or that he lost his virginity to Marth Raye. (yes, he said he often called her "The Big Mouth" during)
That lady was the Wynona Ryder of her day. Not many got away from her. (Hugh Downs and one other)
I bet ole Martha Raye would put a hurtin' on Bright Eyes. She'd tear that Kansan a new one alright!
I felt a little sorry for the young ladies (and gentlemen) as they told of their hotel experiences with Bird. I have to admit though, I couldn't help but chuckle when Dottie M. said she actually fell for it when asked upstairs to see his "Yella Fella!!"
I mean, jeezey pete, that's the oldest puppet trick in the book.
I should know, I wrote the motherscratcher.
Started out good..........2005-01-21
I found this book to be entertaining...for about the first 200 pages. Which is not bad, considering that constitutes more than two-thirds of it. However, the ending seemed incredibly rushed. I wouldn't have minded the book ending the way it did (happily, of course) if the events had unfurled at the same pace as the rest of the story. It just felt as though the author was concerned about missing her deadline. It's too bad; the rest of the book was great!

Book Description
In the vein of James Marshall, this picture book provides a gentle lesson about sulking.
With humor and a light touch, this story shows that sometimes a bad attitude is the only obstacle to a good time. Silly Penelope Nuthatch receives a letter from her friend Luther Crow promising an unforgettable surprise outing. When she sees a rave newspaper review of Swan Lake, calling it "unforgettable," she assumes Luther is taking her to the ballet. Unfortunately for Penelope, her surprise is a trip to the splashy, sticky, sweaty water park. Pouting and drooping, she sulks her way through the park until she realizes that the right attitude, not location, is the difference between a bad and a good day.
Children will delight in the wildly populated world of Penelope Nuthatch, filled with animals of all shapes and sizes. In addition, kids will relate to Penelope's enthusiasm and pouts, while also feeling pleasantly superior to the silly bird.
Customer Reviews:
Penelope Nuthatch and the Big Surprise.......2006-05-20
While Penelope Nuthatch imagines spending a wonderful day with her friend, his surprise initially disappoints her. Readers or listeners will cheer as she decides to have fun and not disappoint her friend. Gavril's wonderfully funny story and fine illustrations that tell the story as well will have children clamoring to have the story read again and again. For Hector and the Noisy Neighbor fans, look for Hector to appear in one of the scenes. Remember Hector love to read.
Grrreat!!.......2006-05-14
I purchased this book because I love the author's previous book, 'Hector and the Noisy Neighbor' which my 4 year old also loves. Penelope is a great character and the lesson of going with the flow after a disappointment is one even adults can learn from. My son wanted to read the book over and over when we first bought it. There are subtle jokes to keep parents entertained as well. Sometimes, I find myself reading the book when my son is not around! The illustrations are also very clever; my son loved Penelope's costume changes. If you look carefully you'll see some characters in the background from the 'Hector' book. I think anyone would enjoy it.

The life story of the highest decorated soldier of the Wehrmacht. Many photos of Rudel's aircraft., 8 1/2" x 11"
Customer Reviews:
My Favorite Book on Rudel!.......2007-06-09
Printed by Schiffer Publishing, an assurance that it is top quality. There are other books that deal more in Rudel's life, both the good and the questionable post-war, but this one pretty much has everything that all but the most ardent reader would. Enough text to please, and many, many splendid photographs. Most people don't realize that the greatest Lufwaffe pilot didn't fly fighters, but the Ju-87, and man, did he ever fly it! He had no equal. Whatever his post-war activities, I'm not here to judge, but this is a splendid book of perhaps the most accomplished pilot of WWII.
Good Book........2006-07-04
THis is a wonderful book. So many photographs telling his life story. This is a must book fro any person who likes history.
Mislead.......2006-05-05
I purchased this book after hearing about Hans Ulrich Rudel some years ago, I actually thought the book was going to be a full story about the man, but the book has mainly photo's so out five the photo's rate a 5/5 but the biography 2/5
A Great Historical Account Tarnished.......2006-03-13
I found this book to be both facinating and detailed. Rudel's bravery and skill can not be debated. I came away from the book with a better understanding of how and why the Germans fought. Rudel writes effectively that the German fighting man was fighting for his family and country--not the ideals of the Nazi party and derived his courage from his comrades. Towards the end of the war, he claimed to have known nothing of the Nazi attrocities that were committed upon the Jews and many other ethnic groups.
With this in mind, my experience with the book was considerably diminished to learn that Rudel was actually one of the leading Germans who continued to finance fugitive Nazis living in South America after the war. At first denouncing the Nazi attrocities in the book, he went on to financially support and conceal the very people responsible for these attrocities. It leads me to question some of the accounts in the book, but still reccommend it as "must read" for WW2 history buffs.
The autobiography of the greatest soldier.......2005-01-23
Despite his post-war political activities, Rudel still stands out as the most noteworthy soldier of the war, arguably the greatest combat pilot (Marseille was probably the best fighter pilot) in history and possibly the greatest pilot. He was apparently known to some as arrogant and unpleasant. He was the only soldier in the German armed forces to receive the Knight's Cross with golden oakleaves swords and diamonds, and was by far the most successful dive bomber. He destroyed, among other things, 519 tanks, over 1000 other vehicle, 70 landing craft etc. He flew 2530 sorties, was shot down 32 times but never by an enemy aircraft and survived the war less a leg. Many of his incredible exploits are in this book. His story is good reading on the war and is a compelling story. One can only imagine how much his signature would cost had he been killed in action. Book is well-written & translated, and the pictures are good. Well worth it.
Book Description
This volume contains the text of the three Cook Lectures, delivered by Sir Geoffrey Elton at the University of Michigan in April 1990, which reviewed various current doubts and queries concerning the writing of reasonably unbiased history. The lectures offer critical advice on how such unbiased history might be achieved, together with a general critical survey of â~fashionableâ theories on the writing of history. The Cook Lectures appear in print for the first time. Also included in the volume are reprinted versions of Sir Geoffreyâs two Cambridge inaugural lectures, as Professor of Constitutional History, and as Regius Professor of Modern History. These tried to dispel, respectively, what Sir Geoffrey sees as the anti-historical fantasies current in the 1960s (but by no means yet gone), and the artificial attempt to denigrate the history of oneâs native country.

Useless study aid.......2005-05-02
This book is the companion to the text. It provides step by step solutions to help in arriving to an answer. However, it only provides a solution to the odd questions, and only to about half of those. It seems to skip the majority of problems that I got stuck on. For example: I had a problem on question #15, but the manual provided answers for 11 and then proceeded to #17. This was aggravating. $40? I think not. I may have paid $4 if I had been warned. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND SKIP THIS PIECE OF TRASH.

A very useful book for this type of course. It might not be exactly what you're looking for if you want something to read on your own.
