                  Book Description

This book explores the relationship between the location of the firm, the location of its markets and suppliers, and the inventory holding behaviour of the firm. Space costs and time costs are manifested in inventory costs. The examination of these inventory costs allows new insights into the reasons for observed industrial location behaviour. In particular, we see that transport costs are only a small part of total distance costs, and that the values of the goods being shipped and the value-added by the firm, are crucial location determinants. This approach is then extended to an analysis of Just-In-Time (JIT) production.

                    Book Description

This book provides the theoretical basis and the relevant experimental knowledge underlying our present understanding of the electrical and optical properties of semiconductor heterostructures. Although such structures have been known since the 1940s, it was only in the 1980s that they moved to the forefront of research, largely due to technological developments that made it possible to grow several ultrathin layers of different materials _ down to a few atoms in thickness _ on top of a silicon or other substrates. The resulting structures have remarkable properties not shared by bulk materials. One can, for example, confine the motions of electrons to a single layer, making it possible to investigate effectively two-dimensional systems. One can also build materials with large-scale periodicities by alternating layers of different compositions, thereby modulating the optical and electronic properties of the resulting structure. The text begins with a description of the electronic properties of various types of heterostructures, including discussions of complex band-structure effects, localized states, tunneling phenomena, and excitonic states. The focus of most of the remainder of the book is on optical properties, including intraband absorption, luminescence and recombination, Raman scattering, subband optical transitions, nonlinear effects, and ultrafast optical phenomena. The concluding chapter presents an overview of some of the applications that make use of the physics discussed. Appendices provide ackground information on band structure theoy, kinetic theory, electromagnetic modes, and Coulomb effects. Intended for graduate students, physicists, and engineers beginning research on semiconductor heterostructures or interested in their

                    Book Description

Meet Roanne Chappell -- definitely not your ordinary teenage girl. A product of the loving but decidedly unorthodox guardianship of her mother, Del, Roanne is a fascinating study in contrasts. Equal parts bold seductress and wide-eyed innocent, smart-ass teenager and wizened sage, she is an outlandish, charismatic, and wholly inspired creation. Unabashedly outspoken (and an increasingly accomplished flirt), Roanne quietly longs for escape -- particularly from her mother's overwhelming and over-powering shadow.

Her chance comes after she discovers, much to her horror, that the professor she had slept with is also bedding her mother. "I just can't seem to stop feeling like one of those air-sucking dogs people leave in cars with the windows open just a tiny bit. I need to put my whole face, my whole self, in the air for a while to try and figure out who I am when I'm not standing next to my amazing mum."

To clear her head, Roanne begins a journey and goes from feeling like an outsider to being embraced by a very special group of people -- people whom most others have found strange or different but with whom Roanne feels right at home. From a marriage proposal by the teenage son of the founders of the Christian Rebirth Center, to her relationship with new best friend Gilbey Tarr -- the sixteen-year-old "Teenage Goddess from Outer Space" -- to a reunion with Dickie Siggins -- international pop star and her mother's life-long friend -- to a bittersweet reconciliation with Del, Roanne soars headfirst into a world of tragedy and comedy, and in the process learns about life, love, and death -- and everything in between.

With this richly satisfying debut novel, Gale Zoë Garnett has channeled Roanne's outsized passions into a tightly crafted and powerfully moving narrative, charting a journey to lands unknown, emotions untapped, and experience unforeseen.

Visible Amazement injects contemporary fiction with welcome jolts of crackling humor and unexpected drama. Written in a totally original and unique voice, the novel, like its heroine, is delightful, disturbing, and utterly unforgettable.

                    1 out of 5 stars awful.......2006-06-04

If she were my daughter, she'd be grounded for life. There is nothing cool about being promiscuous when you are 14. There is nothing cool about sleeping with a man 3 times your age.

                    5 out of 5 stars coolio.......2005-03-02

Visualize yourself a girl of 14 in British Columbia, whose mother is an artist, and sleeping with the professor you've just fallen for. This is the very first of a number of refreshing and exhilarating occurrences in the life of Roanne Chappell. Visible Amazement was an exceptional book, filled with rare adolescent maturity and humorous quirks.
The main character's adventures are somewhat unrealistic but enjoyable non-the-less. Although some actions executed by our young heroine can be viewed by some to be premature and anomalistic, the author portrays her in such a fashion where these actions are expected but not condemned. For example, sleeping with a college professor who is twenty years older than she is, running away to California with seven-hundred dollars in her pocket are both extremely rash and impulsive. However, Gale Zoë Garnett has achieved a high respect in us for Roanne's decisions with her mastery of words and of the manipulation of the eager minds of her readers.
The development of Roanne's character was notable smooth and progressive. She quickly evolves from the minor triviality expected of her age to the maturity that befits most adults. She is affected by the lesser characters of the story, growing wiser with each experience. For example, the homosexual dwarf, Didi, that Roanne idolizes for his stature as a cartoonist and outer serenity despite the deep loathing he has for himself is the major transition in her life from childhood to adulthood. He is the solid rock in her life, being without a father, and constantly moving around from province to province. Didi's home in the Redwood forest, Inn Nainity, is the small piece of heaven that we all really long for, and is the place where Roanne begins to truly understand how beautifully unique she is. This is where she can finally escape the rift between her mother and her that came shortly after their mutual involvement with the college professor, Marcus.
After meeting Didi's giant sized half brother, Pascal, and going to San Francisco with him in Didi's absence, she falls in love with him. Sadly, he doesn't seem to return the feeling, being twenty-eight years older than she is. When she can no longer intrude upon Pascal's hospitality, Roanne relocates to the home of her clown-camp heart throb, Gabe. She learns how people are crushed by success and crush the dreams of others by living amongst Gabe's movie star religious zealot parents. And when Gabe's father dies in a Rebirthing prayer session, she helps him to realize his dreams.
Back at Pascal's place, she meets the teenage supermodel, Gilbey, who becomes her best friend. While exploring the life of the rich and famous, Roanne falls even more deeply in love with Pascal, and now it seems that he loves her as well. Amidst all her joy, Gilbey gets involved with a sexual deviant whose sadistic practices nearly cost her her life. As Roanne nurses her friend back to health, she discovers she is pregnant and goes through an abortion surgery under a fake identity. When Roanna's enraged mother, Del, finally tracks her down, she declares that she will take her home to start high school. Amazingly, Roanne manages to convince her mother to let her skip highschool to live in California. However, when she goes back to Gilbey's house where she has been invited to stay, she discovers that Gilbey has committed suicide due to the parental negligence of her father. And from this, she learns the pain and want that comes hand in hand with having everything.
All in all, Visible Amazement was a spectacular read, and I highly recommend it to all those who read as hungrily as I do. Garnett is a true artist for portraying Roanne in the mature and fresh way that she has. Her style and the complete passion that comes pouring from these pages are a marvelous variation to the average person's dull life. This book is definitely a great source of inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars Worth more than any of us are paying, lol........2004-11-07

I was lucky enough to find this book at a clearance sale for $2, new. I figured it would bring a couple of hours of amusement, but was completely unprepared for the depth of feeling this quirky piece of literary achievement would evoke in me. Garnett is a fabulous author. Her young character, Roanne, is one of the most refreshing and fully developed teenage characters I've ever read, which is saying something. She is a startling combination of sexual maturity, intelligence, and wide-eyed innocence. For those of us who know what it is like to struggle with life and relationships--and who doesn't?--Roanne's thoughts and adventures are like a balm for the soul. If you know a young woman with more than a few eccentricities, it would almost be cruel not to let her know about Visible Amazement. And if you feel as if your world has lost its magic, I suggest you purchase this book, curl up with something sweet and hot to drink, and allow yourself to see things through Roanne's eyes. ;)

                    5 out of 5 stars visibly AMAZING.......2003-03-24

I begged my dad to buy me this book because of the cover and the review on the back that called Gale Zoe Garnett, the book's author, "a female Salinger." While Roanne is not exactly Holden Caulfield in a bra, I could totally relate to what she was going through.

Roanne Chappell is a 14-year old Canadian girl who feels suffocated by her artist mother. She wants to be known by something other than "Del's daughter." She hungers for a world of her own, an existence entirely separate from her mother's. Roanne runs away to the home of D.D.A.(Didi), a renowned cartoonist whom she idolizes, and who turns out to be a lovable, gay, French dwarf.

As Roanne continues her adventure, travelling to California and even swinging by Mexico, Roanne meets quite a number of unusual characters, including Pascal, Didi's photographer brother, Gabe, an old friend from "clown school," and Gilbey Tarr, a gorgeous, Southern "teenage goddess from outer space," who soon becomes Roanne's best friend. These people all help Roanne learn important life lessons, as well as find the wonderful individual hidden from beneath her mother's shadow.

Roanne is unlike any character ever written. I think it is wrong to liken her to Holden Caulfield, for she does not possess Holden's jaded view of the world. Roanne truly is "visibly amazed" by everything she sees.

Although the book's ending was quite abrupt, and the period in which the book is set was not clearly illustrated, I still consider this one of my favorite books. Like Roanne, I often feel the need to run away and forge a world that I can truly call my own. Roanne is not afraid to explore unknown territories, such as her sexuality. You'll be glad the book is written in first person, for Roanne's original blend of coined expressions and Canadian jargon will have you laughing out loud.

Read the book. It will truly amaze you.

                    5 out of 5 stars The Amazing.......2002-09-12

This book was amazing. I suggest to anyone who wants to take an adventure, to take it with this 14 year old girl. She is incredible and the way the story was written was in a way that you don't want to put it down. It took me only a few days to read because all I did was keep my nose in the book. If you put it down, you want to know what's going to happen next and you never want it to end.

Few books are written of the common soldiers of the wars. Most are written of the battles they faught in and the generals they served under. This is a nice exception.

A most insightful and highly informative study of the common soldier of the Confederacy. Well written and very well reseached.

A must have for anyone interested in the Civil war.

I read this book for a military history class and came away very glad I did. The book really lets you know what it was like to be a common soldier in a Confederate army. I agree with another reviewers sentiments that the book reads very much like a research paper, but a well written one at that. You won't always feel like you are right there, but you will come away knowing exactly what these men did, how they did it, and why. To understand the common Southern soldier in the Civil War, start here. Other books have been written since Wiley's, but this is still the place to start.

4 out of 5 stars A Pioneering Study of the Confederate Soldier.......2004-08-17

Bell Irvin Wiley (1906-1990), a scholar of the American Civil War, is best known for his two early books describing the lives of common soldiers in the Union and Confederate Armies. His book, "The Life of Johnny Reb" appeared in 1943 and was followed in 1952 by its companion volume "The Life of Billy Yank". At the beginning of his career, Wiley tended to concentrate on the Confederate War effort and wrote his book on "Billy Yank" as a result of the fascination he developed from writing his initial work with the common soldier. Ironically, Wiley's book on "Billy Yank" is the stronger of the two in terms of detail, organization, factual material, and analysis. His book on the Confederate soldier remains an important effort, essential to understanding the Southern Civil War experience.

In the Preface to his book, Wiley points out the fascination that the campaigns and personalities of Lee, Jackson, Stuart, and other Southern leaders exert (and continue to exert) on students of the Civil War. He aimed in his book to discuss the life of the soldier "as it really was" including among much else "how the hungry private fried his bacon, baked his biscuit, smoked his pipe". His book succeeds in that aim. Wiley's book gave me a good picture of life in the Southern Army with all its privations and hardships. He does not romanticize his subject or, for all his affection for the Southern soldier, fall prey to "Lost Cause" mythology.

The book opens with a discussion of the enthusiasm of the Southern soldier during the early stages of the War -- largely resulting from the conviction that the War would be short and that the Yankees would go home. He discusses how the dream of a short, decisive conflict quickly faded and how the troops were left with the dangerous, boring, and dehabilitating business of soldiering. Some men continued througout with their convictions and enthusiasm but for most the War became something that could not end soon enough.

Wiley gives good pictures and stories of the tedium of life in the camps during the winter and during the long periods when the armies were not in combat or on the march. He describes the bad food, shoddy clothes, and low pay that were the lot of the Confederate soldier. He discusses the various ways the troops spent their time. ranging from the sins of gambling, drink, and vice to the repeated attempts at religious revivials. Wiley is sensitive to the instances of cowardice and fear in the Confederate war effort but he rightly praises the valor and courage, overall, of the Confederate soldier. They fought tenaciously and hard. Wiley discusses the loneliness of soldier life as the men in the lines went to great efforts to write letters home and thought of their wives and sweethearts.

I thought Wiley's discussion of the unsanitary conditions of the camps and the toll taken by disease and poor medical treatment among the best sections of the book. He also discusses well the ambivalent relationships that frequently developed between Johnny Reb and his enemy in blue. Although it became a total and brutal combat, the Civil War was marked by attempts at fraternization, and what later writers have termed the "brotherhood of men at arms." The feelings the combatants developed for each other became important in the reconciliation efforts following this devastating conflict. Wiley also offers a good discussion of the various types of shoulder arms used by the Southern troops during the war, their manufacture, and their limitations.

There is a great deal of anecdotal material in this book. The text is repetitive at times. But this book and its companion volume remain essential Civil War reading and will give the student a feel for life in the lines.

                        5 out of 5 stars Overlooked heroes.......2004-06-28

Bell Irvin Wiley seems to have been the first historian/writer to realize that the Civil War was not just about Lee, Pickett, Grant or Stuart or any of the other guys with stars on their shoulders. The real truth about what happened on those battlefields had to do with the guys in the tattered uniforms and the rotted shoes, trying to fight with defective rifles.

As in his companion book, "The Life of Billy Yank", "The Life of Johnny Reb: The Common Soldier of the Confederacy" is an unflinching look at the seemingly endless plight of a Confederate soldier. This is a very sobering account, and some of the letters the soldiers wrote home are nothing short of heartbreaking. Even as defeat was becoming more and more apparent, the courage and determination of these men did not waiver. This is a truly admirable account of men who were more than common soldiers. I believe they were really common heroes.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Research Work.......2004-02-18

This is an excellent book if you're looking to read about "The Life of Johnny Reb." For once, the title of the book reflects what it really is about ; )

Clearly Wiley has done his homework. You will walk away having learned pretty much everything there is to know about fighting for the CSA.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I started reading as far as style went. I wasn't sure if it would read like a memoir or rather collection of memoirs. The style was actually more along the lines of a research paper. It's a very nuts and bolts portrayal of every day camp life with each chapter focusing on a certain element (Why, Who, How, etc.). You don't get the pit in your stomach or wind in your hair sort of sensation, but you do get a very accurate read of the life and times of those soldiers.

If you're looking for more of a "romantic" or spirited read, I think you'll be disappointed. You're probably better off going with a true memoir. "The Life of Johnny Reb" does not read like a story or memoir. What's great about it is that each chapter stands on its own, so it would be easy to pick up and read from time to time.

In any case, as I mentioned the research is impecable and clearly after reading I can say that I understand the common soldier of the CSA.

Using the compelling testimony of more that one hundred Native Americans, American Book Award Winner Joseph Bruchac tell the histories of seven generations of Native American people. From Lakota to Apache to Abenaki, from Geronimo to Sitting Bull to lesser-known voices, Lasting Echoes is the moving story of the American Indian peoples as seen through their own eyes. Starting with the arrival of the Europeans and moving forward to the present, this is the epic tale of men and women who never forgot their connection to the land, or that their own lives and the lives of their people were one. With sensitivity and grace, Abenaki poet and author Bruchac creates an important and compelling portrait of a proud and determined people.

Lasting Echos is a book of true stories with many facts. The way that the stories are formed is interesting but it drags on. If you are someone that is interested in Native culture this could be the book for you. The discription of what happen in different situations is well written. I think younger people might like it because they can create images of the stories. Teenagers probally would not relate to it and not keep their interest.

Lasting Echoes is an very informative book which offers alot of quotes taken from the native americans on their feelings of the explorers that took over their land. It is a great book to let us know about the other side of history that many of us do not usually think about. This book made me better appreciate the people that owned this land before us.

Fractal geometry is the geometry of the natural world. It mirrors the uneven but real shapes of nature, the world as we actually experience it. Introducing Fractal Geometry traces the development of this revolutionary new discipline.

I like the format of these books, but the problem for me is that this one does not fulfil its brief, which is presumably to be, as its title implies, an introduction to a difficult subject for those not well-versed in science.
I am an interested member of the latter consituency, but I found this book presupposed far too much background knowledge - especially of terminology. Not enough is explained for those of us reformed Luddites who need to be hand-held in these matters. I shall try elsewhere. (Luckily, the field of `popular science` writing is a rich and fertile one these days.)

                                          I liked this book.

I believe it will have value to someone already knowledgeable about math and/or systems and looking for a quick and easy survey of the ideas they will encounter as they start learning about fractal geometry. This book will NOT make them an expert on the subject.

I've read other, more technical books on fractal geometry and chaos, so nothing here was brand new to me.

As for an introduction for the layman...well, that's a tall order if you hope to go beyond the "gee whiz!" phase with pretty pictures. For that, this book is probably as good as you can reasonably expect.

Was this a Power Point presentation... gone missing?

First, it's important to realize that this book is part of a series of "Introducing..." books from a UK publisher. So good authors were probably forced to follow a bad format.

That format apparently required glitzy graphics which overpowered the book. Each small page seemed to be on a separate topic... much like a Power Point slide presentation.

There was disappointingly little coverage of the math side of the material. OK, there really was next to none. The saving grace was the coverage of where fractals were being used in practical applications.

Let me tell you a little more on these graphics. They were (professionally done) hand drawn cartoons. Mostly of famous mathematicians having quirky things to say about the subject, on an 8th grade level.

Overall, I think the authors did a fair job of trying to jamb an excellent subject into a stupid book format. The problem lies most likely at the feet of the publisher. This format makes sense for some of their other 8th grade books: "Introducing Feminism"... Freud... Jung... Marx... Einstein, etc. How they were able to pull off "Introducing Math" in one of these small books is probably a story in and of itself. They even have an "Introducing a Post-Feminism" book, if the first one was not enough.

This book was not a complete zero for me, as I did learn many new things. It was a fast read, but I think I have yet to find the best introductory book on Fractals. If you buy this book, you'll never have to pick up a pencil and solve a problem, or even use a calculator. It's just all... a quick read.

Discovered this book serendipitously- It's easy to read, and the witty illustrations pull you right into it. It's a good book because, while it follows a logical sequence of explanation of fractals, it can also be opened almost anywhere and "read in". I will pass this book on, both to adults and young people I know, and they will get a great introduction to fractals!

                                            Book Description

Presents, in straightforward language, the fundamentals of urban drainage and wastewater disposal. Carrying on the tradition of its predecessors (the first edition appeared in German in 1906), this new edition of a standard in the field has been reworked to reflect new U.S. technology, practices, and conditions. Chapters cover calculation of drainage systems, urban stormwater and combined sewer overflow management, general considerations of wastewater treatment, design and planning of treatment plants, industrial wastewater treatment and pretreatment, protection of receiving waters: discharge of wastewater into surface waters and self-purification of surface waters, conversion of SI units to English customary units, and information retrieval. Includes appendix of monographs for dimensioning of sewers.
