Privacy and the secrecy of telecommunications are widespread concerns of individuals. Controlling telecommunications in order to prevent and fight crime is a pervasive concern of governments. The United States, Germany, and the ECHR have employed fundamentally different methods to approach this apparent dilemma. Using discourse theory as a theoretical framework, the author scrutinises these three systems and the effectiveness of the solutions they have employed. She proposes patterns of reasoning which outline the role that the secrecy of telecommunications plays in constitutional democracies and which help to overcome the strains that new technologies inflict on both the need to protect privacy and on the necessity to control telecommunications.

I will admit, I made it to the 3rd chapter and took it back to the library. Could not get into it at all...very slow beginning!

This has to be the most boring book EVER. And i'm no picky reader either. The cover, the title, and the author's name "Rebecca Cambell" (reminding me a little of Rebecca Bloomwood, from the Shopaholic series) made me have to have it. I immediate returned it without even finishing it. A COMPLETE waste, no value whatsoever. ZERO STARS.

First off let me just say that I'm not a picky reader when it comes to chiclit books. I usually love 'em all! The Shopaholic Series, Anything Jane Green, or Nic Sparks. You name it I own it! I'm also a Fashion Student and love anything involving the catwalk & designers, so when I saw this book I just had to have it! I guess now would be a good time to mention I bought this book about 5 years ago and have tried numerous times over the years to finish it! (TRY being the keyword) When I would take the time to read it my eyes would glaze over with boredom. The book went no where, the characters are dull, and it's just plan BORING! I ended up giving this book to Goodwill. Don't waste your money! And if you do, don't say I didn't warn you!

Very informational, Loved it........2004-09-24

I just completed this book and I found it very engrossing in terms of how much information they present to you. I did not want to stop reading it every night because of how interesting the topics were that they discussed. From hypnotism and how it's used to what the Japanese have recently done to play "mind games". If your interested in any sort of "black science", this is definitely a great read that packs so much information in such a small book.

If you are interested in this book I would recommend Mind Manipulatin by the same authors but a different publisher. Just get that one. If you are told or tempted to get this book and that one DONT they are litterally the same book just from different publishers.

Arendt neither a 'feminist' nor a 'zionist'.......2004-04-13

Those looking to Hannah Arendt for a Zionist or Feminist philosophy will be disappointed. She is one of the great philosophic minds of the twentieth century, and to assign labels to her and use the lens concordant to such labels in reading her is to miss much of what she has to say. She is certainly not trying to provide clever arguments to win debates with. Her relevance to the world today is up to the reader to determine, but I would encourage you to make the attempt.

Arendt is overrated.......1998-10-26

This is a collection of essays from Arendt, a feminist and Zionist from the middle of the century. I am sure most political theorists love this kind of book, but for normal people the text is far too "scholarly". I could find nothing of a feminist nature in this book and little convicing of a Zionist nature. There are far more convincing books on both sets of thought than this.

Sandra Carberry addresses the problem of creating computational strategies that can improve user-computer communication by assimilating ongoing dialogue and reasoning on the acquired knowledge.

Plan Recognition in Natural Language Dialogue critically examines plan recognition - the inference of an agent's goals and how he or she intends to achieve them. It describes significant models of plan inference and presents in detail the author's own model, which infers new goals from user utterances and integrates them into the system's model of the user's plan, incrementally expanding and adding detail to its beliefs about what the information seeker wants to do. Carberry then outlines computational strategies for interpreting two kinds of problematic utterances: utterances that violate the pragmatic rules of the system's world model and intersentential elliptical fragments. She also suggests directions for future research.

Sandra Carberry is Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences at the University of Delaware. Plan Recognition in Natural Language Dialogue is included in the ACL-MIT Press Series in Natural Language Processing edited by Aravind Joshi.

This volume is a collection of papers concerning the biology of large branchiopod crustaceans: Anostraca, Conchostraca, and Notostraca. Many of the individual papers were first presented at the Third International Large Branchiopod Symposium (ILBS-3) held at the University of San Diego, CA, USA, July 15-18, 1996. Contributions on additional topics from participants at the symposium, and from colleagues not able to join us in San Diego, are also included. In addition, there is a supplement to the 1995 `Checklist of the Anostraca'.
The theme of the ILBS-3 was `understanding and conserving large branchiopod diversity'. Researchers from around the world presented papers on a variety of topics related to conservation of large branchiopods, with contributions ranging from alpha-taxonomy and zoogeography to community structure and studies of ecology and evolution. One important issue developed in many of the papers in this volume is the need to advance our understanding of basic aspects of branchiopod biology throughout the world in order to enhance our efforts to conserve them. Although we have made important strides in understanding the biology of large branchiopods, we have, with few notable exceptions, made little progress in assuring the conservation of their diversity. We hope this volume will supply the reader with new ideas, and generate enthusiasm for research and public education efforts on behalf of branchiopod conservation.
