A great technique-building workbook.......2004-09-12

Though currently out of print, this textbook from Kodansha is quite excellent and well worth tracking down for students of Japanese eager to reach an advanced level of control in the language. Very few "Advanced" textbooks really do much to help you with anything other than the specific stories or articles that they provide as examples. "Reading Japanese Financial Newspapers," however, is extremely effective at getting the new vocabulary and kanji compounds in your head keeping what you learn in the front of your mind. I am an actor, not a businessman, but this book has helped tremendously in making the leap forward to reading contemporary newspapers, novels, and essays in Japan.

That said, this is NOT for the beginner. You must already have a firm grasp of hiragana, katakana, and basic kanji. This textbook will make the difference for those who have mastered basic and have a relatively firm grip on intermediate Japanese. At the beginning you should feel that much of the material is repetition of more vague words that you've already experienced in some capacity. However, the book moves at a very quick pace, cementing those aspects for a strong foundation upon which to gain control of the more advanced language that comes soon after.

If you're new to the language or just finished the beginning phase, try another more basic textbook. But for the already fairly experienced Japanese student, this book is more than worth the search.

I do not recommend this for learning kanji, but only for the word lists (like the sample financial statements at the end) and some of the grammatical points.
I've owned this book for ten years or so and never got even half-way thru the first section until I had worked my way thru another, far better book, "Business Kanji" published by Tuttle in 1999. I am now finally getting thru it, but still don't like it much.
Although this book is exhaustively thorough especially regarding grammatical patterns, it relies far to much on brute force memorization. Kanji are introduced and used in no apparent order and are not reinforced once learned.
It is perhaps the "best" for business of an outdated methodology which has been replaced by the far better approaches of Prof. Eleanor Jorden ("Reading Japanese"--although that doesn't begin to go far enough to read a newspaper), Prof. Edward Daub et al. ("Basic Technical Japanese" which I have also reviewed very favorably here) and "Business Kanji" by Reiko Suzuki, et alia.

Another classic Japanese language text..........2002-02-04

My advice is to use Jordan's Reading Japanese as a starting point, and eventually move on to Reading Japanese Financial Newspapers. I struggled with this text for quite some time, but eventually emerged literate enough to read Nikkei Shimbun pretty comfortably...

Very very good book..........1999-04-22

I got this book hoping that it would give a boost to my newspaper reading ability... It did. Although I already knew almost all the Joyo kanji, I didn't know a laaarge number of the terms commonly used in newspapers... especially the financial terms. This book greatly helped in remedying that...

The most important thing you should know is that this book _isn't_ just about finance -- it's about almost everything in japanese newspapers, including sentence structure and common idioms... And at any rate, it's much nicer to skim by boring financial articles knowing that you could read them if you wanted to ...

If you are frustrated with newspapers, get this book. It won't do everything for you, but it'll do a lot... And it's easy to work through, especially if you're looking at papers all the time trying to read them... ;)

This book should be on every Mother's list of gifts for her daughter. What a beautiful portrait of a mother by her daughter. In this age of "feminism" this should also be a must read for women in general. Madame Curie was in a class of intellectual genius by herself. She is one of the most outstanding woman scientists ever - and she was Polish!
She is a great example as a human being, a woman, a mother, a "Polack", a scientist, a wife. Needless to say I was very impressed by the book. The thought that this was written so beautifully by this woman's daughter never left my awareness. This book certainly made this half-Polack extremely proud of his heritage.

Unforgettable........2005-08-20

This is one of the books that will remain closest to me...the kind of book I would definitely have on my own children's bookshelf. I unfortunately had to stop reading the book midway because the library wanted it back, and I was also going to be out of town. Three months later, I still felt compelled to go back to the library and finish off the remaining two or three chapters.

The book is a detailed account of Marie Curie's personal and professional life. And who better to tell this story than Eve, her own daughter. The genius in Mme. Curie was a direct result of her dedication to hard work and an amazing work ethic. From a peasant Polish family, she faced many challenges and postponed her own education and worked for a wealthy family to help pay for her older sister's education. Such was Marie's spirit and selflessness - which extended to her research and her work in science.

Her creation, radium, was the ultimate criminal that led to her untimely death, when she felt she still had a lot to accomplish. The lady was indeed a noble gift to the science world.

I say that for a biography was pretty good. There was a few boring parts that made me want to put the book. I wouldn't have read this book for pleasure. I had to read it for a physics project. I gave the book 3 stars because I did not necessary enjoy this because it was for school.

Madame Curie is a touching and honest biography. It tells the perserving story of Marie Curie, a native Pole who would seem out of place in France and--being a woman in a more prejudice timeframe--in the scientific community in general. Although this was the case, it did not stop her from becoming one of the most prolific and important scientists in the realm of physics and chemistry.

Within this book is held the tale of a woman who worked almost every single minute of her life in either the laboratory, the classroom, or her own home. But she never faltered under pressure and endured inhospitable laboratory conditions (she was originally working in a shed to help discover radium, the element that created the field of radiation cancer treatment and spurred the field of nuclear science.

As a biographer, Eve Curie remains factual in content, allowing the reader to form an unbiased opinion of her mother. She buttresses the book with personally letters to and from Marie Curie, which add a first hand account of certain aspects of her mother's life.

A must read for anyone looking for a heartwarming story.

Marie Curie - An Inspiration for All.......2002-06-23

The book is a reprint of the biography written by Marie Curie's daughter, Eve Curie in 1937. It is a book which should be read by all - especially aspiring scientists. Marie Curie was the first woman to receive a Ph.D. in France, the first woman to receive a Nobel Prize and the first person to receive two Nobel prizes. The work she accomplished under the most difficult situations for a scientist is truly inspiring. When asked why she and her husband, Pierre Curie did not patent the procedure for extraction and purification of radium, something which would have made them very wealthy, she said "No, It would be contrary to the scientific spirit." How refreshing, since in today's world the first thought of scientists is patenting their discoveries.

A Workmanlike Biography.......2006-09-02

This is a good basic biography of Marie Curie. The writing is generally a little flat, punctuated with outcroppings of some rather odd word usages. For example, Pflaum consistently refers to Marie Curie being "enceinte," instead of simply saying she was pregnant. And we read about things like "the flairing of the wind." Not wrong - but something a little off about the phraseology here and there. It's as if Pflaum spent too much time in France researching her subjects and became distanced from the English language in the process.

However this book will certainly add to your knowledge of Marie Curie's amazing career. I found the chapter on her activities during World War I to be especially interesting. Curie and her daughter went out into the battlefields with the first mobile X-ray machines. They saved untold lives by being able to locate bullets and shrapnel in soldiers, and the exact site of breakages and other internal damage. I'd never realized Curie's brave contribution to that War effort.

Then you will find some unexpected insights into world politics here. In the course of discussing the Curies' contribution to the World War II effort, Pflaum explains how the Communists became an increasingly popular political alternative during the 1940s and 50s. They were so active in the wartime resistance, they gained the respect of a large percentage of the French and Italian peoples. Their heroism in defeating Fascism/Nazism no doubt played a part in establishing the Communist Party as a viable political faction in a number of European countries. Again, this was a larger back-story to the Cold War and succeeding geopolitical dynamics than I expected to find in a book simply about Marie Curie.

I wish though that Pflaum had supplied more scientific detail. You won't find much about the nature of radioactivity here so it's difficult for the reader to fully appreciate the Curies' achievement. You will probably want to check out some book of popular explanation of the atom to accompany your reading of Grand Obsession.

This book does convey Marie Curie's dedication to her work. She kept an unfailing schedule in her laboratory - through difficult personal times, through her own failing health. Because Pflaum's writing is not very inspired, this book will probably not inspire any young readers to similar heights of dedication to scientific pursuit. Grand Obsession may not have a very long half-life in your memory. But it radiates some of the spirit of Marie Curie.

Good book exploring various earth energies.......2000-06-14

Serge Kihili King has done a yeoman's work in exploring various earth energies as postulated by numerous people. Mesmer, Reichenbach, and Wilhelm Reich to name only three.

Mr King also explores Pyramid power, Radionics, Vivaxis, and Geomancy.

I only have one minor nitpick. Mr. King should have researched his information about Ch'i (QI) more in depth. On page 3 Mr King postulates two energies (Li and Ch'I).

In Qigong (sometimes spelled Chi gong, Chi Gung, and Chi Kung as well) There are three energies and none of them are called Li.

Jing: This is the original essence you inherit from your parents.

Ch'i: You get this from the air your breathe, food you eat, liquids you drink, and in addition you can tap into an infinite amout of external Qi from your surroundings.

Shen: This is your spirit or soul.
