Microstructure of Martensite: Why It Forms and How It Gives Rise to the Shape-Memory Effect (Oxford Series on Materials Modelling, 2)
ASIN: 3540206353 |
Book Description
Since the beginning of the nineties, shape memory alloys (SMA) have become available for microsystems technology. Currently the breadth of research and development activities on SMA microactuators ranges from pure scientific topics of materials research to technological problems, such as micromachining, integration and contacting. The book gives an overview of recent achievements, describing the development of microvalves and linear actuators comprehensively from concept through prototype. Further key aspects included are three-dimensional models for handling complex SMA actuator geometries and coupled simulation routines that take multifunctional properties into account. Mechanical and thermal optimization criteria are introduced for actuator design, allowing an optimum use of the shape memory effect. It is shown that some of the prototypes presented, e.g. SMA microgrippers, already outperform conventional components.
Book Description
In the late sixties, a rogue psychiatrist created a gated community of mental patients called Yesterday, utilizing some revolutionary mental health techniques. When Orson Littlefield is sent to the Yesterday mental facility, he is introduced to a new medication that makes his delusions come to life. His next door neighbor, who is actually just another part of his delusion, becomes enraged when Orson kicks yet another figment of his imagination into her yard. She then promptly murders him with a nuclear warhead. Meanwhile, the antichrist, a Louisiana bunny rabbit, rises to power and seduces the world.
One testament later, a high school football star takes on the persona of savior for a sports starved small town. His life is naturally replete with miracles, disciples, a donkey, and plenty of sex.
Interspersed throughout are the author’s own attempts to come to terms with the fact that all the characters in his story are just figments of his imagination. Newspapers come to life, girlfriends evaporate, and various characters throughout are stricken with stigmata.
A social commentary, religious satire, and absurdist comedy that examines the fine line between imagination and reality: come look inside the womb of monsters.

Informative, Readable, Superb.......2007-02-26
This gripping narrative looks at the horrific siege of Leningrad from 1941-1944. Author Harrison Salisbury opens by examining Soviet Russia on the eve of the June, 1941 invasion - when commanders that suspected a German attack dared not prepare and risk the wrath of Stalin. Then the author describes the invasion, the approach of Nazi tank columns, and the surrounding of Leningrad's 2.5 million residents (and 500,000 defenders) at the end of August, 1941. Readers learn of the city's leadership, its battered but defiant defenders, and Stalin's machinations. The author devotes many chapters to the horrific winter of 1941-1942, when the besieged city ran out of food and coal. Imagine trying to survive on daily food rations of a few ounces of bread, in a frozen city with no heat or electricity, and with German bombs and shells falling daily. Dogs, cats, and birds disappeared into frying pans, and brave truckers brought in some supplies over a frozen Lake Lagoda, but over 250,000 civilians died of starvation during that first winter. After describing that horrific first winter, the author bascially fast forwards to the massive Russian offensive in January of 1944 that ended the siege. Then he concludes with a brief post-war epilogue that mentions survivors, rebuilding, and Stalin's brutal purge of the city's leadership.
Journalist Harrison Salisbury (1908-1993) wrote readable prose that almost makes us feel as if we're inside Leningrad during the siege. His book does need better maps - even with a handy atlas I couldn't locate every town and river mentioned. Still this is gripping history, considered by some as definitive, and well worth your time. Readers might also enjoy many of the author's other works on Russia, China, etc.
the 900 days; .......2006-11-14
Having made 2 trips to
St. Petersburg in the past 3 years, both guides highly recommended this book. It is incredibly well written, both the background leading up to the atack as well as the hardships over the next 2+ years. The fortitude and heroism portrayed give a much better understanding of the Russian people and what they endured.
Superb example of how history should be written.......2006-10-17
Salisbury gave us a monumental work of history: not just in scope, but in depth. This is a book which entwines the epic story with the human story, basing both on the kind of scholarship too few writers are dedicated enough to accomplish. I wrote a well-received history on the early satellites (The First Space Race, Texas A&M, 2004) which I was proud of, but I can't resist the feeling that Salisbury did as much research for every chapter as I did for an entire book.
As always with a well-written history, there are lessons which are important for our own times. The most striking example comes at the beginning of the book, where the reader learns the German invasion of Russia was anything but the complete surprise Russan leaders claimed it was. The German preperations were too large to hide, and all kinds of intelligence, even exact dates, made it into the briefings given to the Russian leadership. But Stalin had his own view of the way things were, and anything to the contrary was ignored or disparaged. The Russians were also victimized by a system in which initiative was dangerous: military and civilian officials who read the tea leaves and tried to take some preparatory action on their own were slapped down. Salisbury shows us, in sometimes-agonizing detail, how these factors resulted in what may have been the most brutal, dehumanizing, and costly battle in history. I agree with some other reviewers that more maps and photographs would be useful, but that's a minor quibble.
This book is a breathtaking achivement.
Surviving the Deadliest Battle in Human History.......2006-09-02
If "war is hell," as General Sherman said, then at the innermost circle of hell you'll find the 900-day siege of Leningrad (now renamed St. Petersburg). It was, by all accounts, the deadliest battle in human history. More than 300,000 Soviet soldiers perished, plus uncounted thousands of Germans. Inside the blockade zone, an estimated 1.2 million civilians slowly starved to death as Hitler and Stalin used the city like a giant chess piece on the Eastern Front.
The late Harrison Salisbury captured this epic struggle better than anyone else in "The 900 Days," a book every student of 20th century history should read at least once. He begins the story with Leningrad at peace during the balmy "white nights" of June 1941. Culture is flourishing throughout the city. Composers, writers, musicians and artists are busy at work. Families are vacationing on the Baltic coast. Meanwhile, Stalin and his minions are in a massive state of denial about the coming Nazi assault, despite dozens of warnings and signs.
After the first few fascinating chapters, "The 900 Days" can be slow going as Salisbury details the military intrigue and paranoia that decimated the Soviet leadership in the years leading up to the siege, which yielded tragic consequences for Russian defenses in 1941 and 1942. If you're primarily interested in the human side of the story, skip to Part IV on page 393.
The emotional core of this book is the immense civilian catastrophe that took place during the 2.5 year siege. Despite heroic attempts by local citizens and Young Communist brigades, the city became a slow-motion killing zone without nearly enough food, fuel or even fresh water to sustain the population. People resorted to the most desperate and barbaric measures to stay alive. (Warning: Not for children or the squeamish.) Compassion and brutality roamed the streets simultaneously.
Ultimately, the siege was broken in January 1944, but not before Leningrad was largely destroyed. Stalin gets much of the blame for failing to evacuate more civilians earlier on. But the real lesson of "The 900 Days" is that human suffering has no limit in times of war. Let's not forget that before we start another one.
Final note: This book is relatively short on maps, photos and diagrams. Some courageous publisher should republish the book with a complete set of photos from the period, many of which are available at the St. Petersburg library.
Good, but something missing.......2006-02-21
The first part of the book is fantastic in its description of the time leading up to Barbarossa, the simple shock the Soviets had and the almost refusal to believe by Stalin.
The first half of the book I would give 5 stars. The detail is almost overwhelming. If one is not familiar with cyrilic and has at least a rough grasp of the Russian language, it is very difficult to keep all the names of generals, party officials, and city administrators separated. A few more maps would have been better, to help the reader get a better grasp of the situation described. I constantly found myslef going back to the maps at the beginning, trying to figure out specifics, and giving up because many of the places mentioned in the text were not on the map. However, the portrayal of the Soviet military structure is vivid and gives one a good image of what happened. The description of the Tallinn disaster was exceptionally good. The first half resembles the 25 years he spent researching the events.
The second half of the book is lacking. The description of the starvation is very gruesome and disturbing, which is accurate historically. The timeline, which is fairly orderly at the beginning, takes a nose dive about half way through. Here, it seems that Salisbary was finding new information as he wrote the book, and including it. Therefore, events are presented in random order. Then the book just stops, and says that the city was still in blockade and then the war was over.
Some of the other reviewers have accurately described the over emphasis on the plight of writers, poets, and playwrights. The ordinary citizen is not represented, nor is the average soldier given adequate attention.
The German side of the engagement is almost non-existant. Beevor's book on Stalingrad is much better at describing the events. But as for Leningrad, Salisbary's book is still the best I have read on the subject.
Book Description
Leningrad (now reverted to its pre-1914 name of St Petersburg) was surrounded by German forces in 1941 and cut off from the rest of Russia. It was besieged for nearly three years, the great city's population suffering terribly in the bitter cold of the Russian winter. Over a million men, women and children died of starvation and hypothermia, but the city fought on and never surrendered. In 1943 the Russian army broke through to link up with the garrison and end the longest, bloodiest siege of the Second World War.

A "must have" reference book.......2007-01-17
Books about the Leningad siege usualy deal mainly with the human aspect of the event, presenting collections of personal accounts and experiences, like Harrison E. Salisbury's "The 900 days: The Siege of Leningrad". Fortunately, for those interested in the military campaing, this book presents an almost day by day narrative of the operations on the various fronts, with statistcs and comments on the stategies and commanders. And all this without being a tedious reading. This book is a "must have" military and historic reference about the subject.
Good information marred by some poor writing .......2006-07-16
In `The Siege of Leningrad' David Glantz is successful in providing a succinct and informative account of the military aspects of this battle. By drawing on Soviet sources Glantz describes how the Soviet military successfully defended the city against German attack and eventually lifted the siege. A particular strength of this book is that Glantz gives considerable attention to the failed Soviet attempts to lift the siege and highlights the terrible price the Soviets paid in the fighting around the city.
The book is, however, let down by the poor quality of much of Glantz's writing. Many passages are confusing or `jumpy' and some accounts of battles read like a shopping list of unit and place names. Due to his focus on the Soviets Glantz's accounts of the German objectives and strategies can also be unclear. For example, it is never made clear whether the Germans were serious about capturing Leningrad after 1941 and Hitler's role in the battle is confusing. I also found the number of maps in the book to be somewhat unsatisfactory - while each chapter has a clear and useful map the book would have benefited from the addition of maps depicting the major battles described in the text.
While I'd strongly recommend `The Siege of Leningrad' to readers looking for a military history of how the Soviet military defended the city and eventually lifted the siege, it's not successful as a general history and should be avoided by non-specialist readers.
A tale of heroism and tragedy.......2005-05-09
The Siege of Leningrad 1941-1944 is the incredible true story of the German Army's three-year assault on Leningrad. A tale of heroism and tragedy, shelling and starvation (nearly 4,000 of the city's inhabitants starved to death on Christmas Day alone), The Siege of Leningrad recounts the details of a turning point of World War II. Intensively researched, and enhanced with a handful of black-and-white photographs, The Siege of Leningrad 1941-1944 is a welcome addition to library and personal world history shelves and reference collections.
Great Introduction to the Seige.......2002-04-18
This book is unlike Glantz's books on Kursk, Kharkov, or Mars in that it is a slim, larger-sized hardback with a lot of photos and color maps. He also doesn't go into a large amount of detail. This scope makes it a lot easier to understand - while I understood battles that Erickson (in "The Road to Stalingrad") describes but I was confused about. Also, it's a good primer before jumping into "The 900 Days" by Salisbury.
Col.Glantz's another excellent book.......2002-03-01
Although the Leningrad encirclement and the battle around the city was one of the biggest tragedic drama in WW II. it has been a relatively neglected subject . Mr.Salisbury's book was the only one which sheded the light on this tragic human conflict in English speaking nations.Daivd Glantz's "900 days of terror "is the one which can be equalled to Mr. Salisbury's "the 900days"
Since I read "When titians clashed" , I 've become a fan of Col.Glantz's eastern front sagas . this one is somewhat less scholarly than his previous books (in particular ,the ones published from Frank Cass pub)however, It is suprisingly readable, informative and well-balanced.col Glantz also provides the OB of Soviet forces, exhaustive notes and valuable date on casualties.there are also many unpublished pictures and wonderful maps
I've heard that Col.Glantz's next book from Kansas university press would also be the one on the Battle of Leningrad. I hope it will be published soon.

Book Description
The French Revolution sent shock waves through Europe, as the continent's remaining monarchs tried to stamp out the tide of republicanism. France was surrounded by enemies but fought them off, largely through the achievements of Napoleon Bonaparte, the Republic's youngest general. Within a decade he had become Consul, First Consul, and finally Emperor, creating a new dynasty and a new order in Europe. From 1803 until 1809 he seemed unbeatable, vanquishing his foes one after another. But his invasion of Russia in 1812 proved disastrous, and he soon faced a growing coalition of enemy powers. His defeat at the Battle of Waterloo marked the close of the Napoleonic Era, but not the end of the Napoleonic legend.
This marvelous, full-color book charts Napoleon's rise and fall and analyzes the weaponry and rival armies that were to transform nineteenth-century Europe. It includes over 160 superb illustrations, many of which have never previously been published, and maps that have been specially commissioned for the book.

Wonderful book!.......2007-01-16
My son is very interested in the Napoleonic era, so I purchased this book for him. I found myself reading it first. The maps were excellent. The detailed battle sketches enabled me to understand the strategy. The text was simple and engaging. I recommend this for anyone who enjoys history, maps and battle strategy.
Beautiful Summary of the Napoleonic Period.......2005-05-01
This book provides an excellent summary of the Napoleonic period. Although not a true atlas in its own right (as there are not enough maps to justify this), the maps that are provided show the positions and movements of French and opposing forces in some key battles and campaigns. However, the book is more than just an atlas, as it brilliantly summarizes the events (both political and military) and incorporates beautiful artwork from the period. The book covers events from the French Revolution, Napoleons first campaign in Italy, the Egyptian, Austerlitz, Jena-Auerstadt, Wagram, Russian, National Liberation and Waterloo campaigns and exile. Also included is the War of 1812 between Great Britain and the United States, perhaps suggesting the Napoleonic wars were indeed the real 1st World War.
This is truely a beautiful book and well written, but some people may criticise it for its lack of in-depth detail. However, one feels that the book was never designed to go into minute detail, otherwise the work would be spread over many large volumes. It is a magnificent summary as an atlas, pictorial and narrative of the Napoleonic Era. Recommended reading and visual treat.
For the novice.......2004-08-16
The book is well presented and well done graphically, but suffers by trying to be too much at once. It would have been better had the author settled on one topic. The title may be a little misleading, if its an Atlas you want, then spend another $80.00 and get the Miitary History and Atlas of the Napoleonic Wars re:published by Stackpole, written by Elting et al at the US Military academy. For a surface glance and for a novice it will suffice.

Great Reference!.......2006-08-31
This books provides an excellent overview of the Napoleonic Era. It greatly helps readers understand the reasons way various campaigns were fought, their course and the battles involved, and their aftermaths. I strongly recommend this reference to anyone interested in the age of Napoleon, especially novices with little background in the Era.
I am a military history buff. I've always been interested in the Napoleonic Era, but I've had a hard time getting into it. The age has always seemed so confusing with the massive numbers of nations involved and the constantly switching alliances. This book has been a god-send. It clearly and concisely describes the course of all of the major campaigns of this period (1789-1815) and backs up the descriptions with numerous, colorful maps. In just a few nights this book has been able to help me feel competent about the course of the Napoleonic Wars. Readers familiar with the period will not gain as much from it as newcomers, but it should still be a handy desk reference.
A beautiful and exciting presentation of Napoleon's life.......2005-04-10
Historical Atlas Of The Napoleonic Era is a beautiful and exciting presentation of French conqueror Napoleon's life, ambitions, battles, military genius, and legacy. Full-color maps, artworks and illustrations on every page add a visceral touch to descriptions of battles, Napoleon's tactics, and also his most costly mistakes. Though Napoleon's warfare spread misery to many, his dream of a unified Europe persisted long after his passing and is realized today, at least in part, by an increasingly synchronized Europe and the introduction of a single European currency. Historical Atlas Of The Napoleonic Era is an exciting and detailed chronicle of a turbulent era in European history, and a welcome addition to personal and library history collections.
