There’s no easier, faster, or more practical way to learn the really tough subjects
Corporate Finance Demystified offers a comprehensive introduction to corporate finance principles, the time value of money, including present value, amortization schedules, and more. This self-teaching guide comes complete with key points, background information, quizzes at the end of each chapter, and even a final exam. Simple enough for beginners but challenging enough for advanced students, this is a lively and entertaining brush-up, introductory text, or classroom supplement.
Customer Reviews:
Good Supplement but No Substitute.......2007-09-16
I found the book to be worth the money as a supplement, but it did not replace the texbook for my class in corporate finance. Most helpful were the problems at the end of each chapter.
Good for review of the topic.......2007-06-11
I am reviewing Corporate Finance, which I first took a year ago, in preparation for an advanced course that I will soon take. This book is good for my purposes. It is concise and clear, yet still often takes the time to explain, elaborate, and interpret information. However, the presentation is a little bit too concise for an initial presentation, and there are some typos in the quizzes and examples--better proofreading is needed. If you're looking for a fuller explanation, I have found that the textbooks by Stephen Ross are good (eg Fundamentals of Corporate Finance--he has several similarly titled books--the above named is for the first course for undergrad finance majors).
MYSTIFIED not demystified.......2007-02-14
I am a very experience small business person. I picked up this text to obtain an overview of more advanced corporate finance as a precursor to more intensive study. I found the text failed for my purposes.
While the text is promoted as a self-teaching guide, this is not, in my opinion a beginner book. I ended chapters more confused than when I started (NOT due to the complexity of the material or my inability but due to the poor text). For example, there is no glossary to quickly look-up new terms as one might expect for a self-study guide. Far too much of the book is made up of multiple choice "self-tests" in each chapter with only a list of the correct multiple choice answers in the back of the book (no explanations).
An example of the issues with the book is in the fairly basic, Chapter 3. Chapter 3 covers financial statements and apparently corporate taxes (all in six, light format, pages). The chapter introduces basic balance sheets and cash flow statements. The text then discusses taxes but does not really explain why tax rate tiers vary according to corporate income, whether the rates indicated are typical, nor even why taxes are discussed fairly in-depth (I speak relatively here since I generally found little depth in the text) in a basic overview of simple financial statements. The text then sharply transitions in the same chapter to Cash Flow From Assets where several formulas as acronyms are introduced without fully explaining the acronyms (some you can figure out, some remain a msytery). (Again, there is no glossary, and the index self-refers to the acronym itself.) Total coverage of the topic--about 6 pages of text including the example balance sheets and tax tables followed by four pages of "test questions."
Each chapter ends with a self-test presumably to test knowledge. Again, Chapter 3 is an example. I created an Excel spreadsheet on my own to work some of the problems (I really do want to learn this material). However, the questions ask about non-existent information (referring to 2004 figures when the text has examples from 2006-2007). (This may seem like a simple typographical error but is confusing since the answer explanation does not explain the answer. You are left guessing the answer and then trying to decipher both the question and the applying (hopefully) analysis skills). Then, a question introduces marginal tax rate as a question but is never explained in the text. The index, again no glossary, refers to the question itself as the explanation (for comparison, Wikipedia gives a clear, seven paragraph analysis of marginal tax rate).
I had high hopes for this text and was committed to the topic. I was very disappointed. Since I am unfamiliar with the material, the evident errors make me question the quality of the rest of the material (i.e., if the errors are clear in some sections, how can I, as a novice, trust the materials I am unfamiliar with--for example formulas and comparisons?)

Delight to read.......2003-08-12
I had done a beginners course on accounts before and left that course more confused about the subject than before. I was still confused about debit and credit, double-entries etc. I found this book and it solved my problems. This book will help you as well. It is very clear. It is very structured. Each sentence makes sense. The book is a delight to read (if the term can be used in conjunction with accounts) and I can recommend it without reservations.

Customer Reviews:
Wow.......2002-01-30
This is one of the few books i've found that tells you where the symbols for each element comes from. An interesting read, and useful..
This book got me hooked on chemistry!.......2001-08-24
This book is the best book on the elements. It covers ever area that I could think of, from historical background, properties, production, and compounds. The book is so in depth and doesn't miss a thing. It is also beneficial because it gives basic information like atomic weight, boiling point, specific gravity, and oxidation state (and many other things). It just has all the information that you could need. Even for obscure elements no one has ever heard of before, it covers a lot of information. This could be used for personal reference and I would even recommend it for school. Reading it will help better understand the roll of the elements and chemistry in our lives.
A great treasure trove of information.......2001-08-05
I received this book about four years ago, and it has been one of the best books I have read about the elements. It covers many things from uses, history, specifics, production, and certain important reactions. This is the book that caused me to become interested in chemistry. The author did a great job with every aspect of it. I can't imagine a better book to use to find out the information.
A book for high school students only.......2000-06-23
The book in general is good, but for chemistry students I would not recommend. It is weak, and has some mistakes.

Book Description
This book originated out of a desire to combine topics on vibrational absorption, Raman scattering, vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) and Raman optical activity (VROA) into one source. The theoretical details of these processes are presented in ten different chapters. Using dispersive and Fourier transform techniques, the instrumentation involved in these spectral measurements are given in three chapters. Major emphasis is placed on the newer techniques, i.e. VCD and VROA, with the conventional vibrational absorption and vibrational Raman scattering methods incorporated as natural parts of the newer methods.
Features of this book:
• Comprehensive coverage of vibrational circular dichroism and vibrational Raman optical activity.
• Coverage of theoretical and instrumental details.
• A comprehensive survey of VCD and VROA applications is included, so that the reader can get an overview of theory, instrumentation and applications in one source.
The topics covered are of an advanced level, which makes this book invaluable for graduate students and practising scientists in vibrational spectroscopy.

Book Description
This is a book about the physics of the collective behavior of grains, for example forming dense packings, being in suspension in fluids or simply forming a (complex) fluid by themselves. Such systems are extremely abundant both in natural, human and industrial environments - and fall within several very different scientific domains, ranging from soil mechanics to statistical physics. Each of the eleven chapters presents a particular aspect of granularity, starting from the geometry of irregular packings to computer modelling of flowing particles. They all emphasise the important role played by disorder.

Did you ever . . .
Get lost at work coming back from the mens room?
Design an exercise machine that lets you reason with it?
Build a superpressure bean cooker that erupted like a volcano and paint the ceiling with bean juice?
Rent a car and couldn't find where to put in gasoline?
Ask a CIA Security Escort to join you in a mens room stall?
Convince your boss that "Dear It" is the nonsexist way to start a letter?
Show by mathematics that 4 hours is a full day of work?
These guys did.
They may be brilliant scientists, but Harold's wife worries that he'll get lost coming home from work, and Sid regularly forgets to go to work. Harold can make equipment talk, and Sid can figure angles to convince administrators to do whatever he wants. They're an ideal, but kooky pair.
The two, who always get their research equipment at the salvage building, find certain people glow orange in the video system they built. Circumstances convince them that people acting deceitfully have the orange glow. They convince administrators that the machine works but is untestable - they say a lie told for the sake of testing sometimes may not be a lie.
Laboratory administrators are afraid to get near the machine because it might expose them, but they see the deceit detector as a money cow for research funds. Management says the project is too important for working scientists to manage and put a wheeler-dealer in charge. With plenty of funds available, new deceit detector projects sprout, machines to detect potential deceit, past deceits, . . . Sid and Harold lay low and keep puttering with scientific toys they get at salvage. Sid and Harold discover their machine does not work. However, they elect to tell nobody and figure keeping quiet will let their funding go on for years and years.

A great forgetful scientists book that's really funny.......1999-09-01
Forgetful scientists are some of the funniest books around. If you think something like Flubber is funny, you'll love this one. It doesn't have far out inventions or anything like that. It is just two oddballs outsmarting bureaucracy but unable to live life without getting themselves in hillarious episodes, like unable to find where to put gas in a rental car, or making a high tech hot dog cooker that the wife won't let in her kitchen.
Book Description
“Adrian Goldsworthy is one of the best young historians writing today.” —John Keegan
The Fall of Carthage was the greatest conflict of the ancient world, and thanks to one of the finest historians of our time, this sweeping saga comes to life anew for modern audiences. The cast of endlessly fascinating characters includes the generals Hannibal and Scipio, as well as treacherous chieftains, beautiful princesses, scheming politicians, and tough professional warriors.
Customer Reviews:
Rome's rise to prominence.......2007-09-06
I would say 4.5 stars actually, my only complaint really being thata couple of pages unbinded near the beginning of the book, I may have simply got the one copy that has this problem, and the need to do a little paperback repair is really my only complaint. The writing itself is so good in my opinion, that I wasn't discouraged by this little mishap at the beginning of my reading.
I enjoyed the reading of this book for two reasons. For starters, it makes an effort to cover little complexities that might be difficult for someone reading about this period for the first time, but it also does so thoroughly in such a way as to allow someone such as myself to grasp everything that's going on in entirety. I've read other books on the Pelopennesian War and the Greco-Persian War which were very good, but there were some bits of knowledge that were left out, such as what a trireme was, other than a military boat of some sort. This book does not leave such details unknown to the amateur reader. However once explaining the details, this book does not at all shy away from giving the fullest possible picture of events that might be provided based on the available source material.
Without spoiling the contents of the book, I can only tell you that this book has not only been educational in terms of military history, but also in terms of roman history. If you miss that while reading through events, the epilogue does a great job of wrapping it all together while pondering all the things in Rome's future that may have been in some part due to events that made Rome a power in the first place.
One of the Major Military Conflicts of the Ancient World.......2005-11-03
Military history has been slighted in recent years, with the possible exception of John Keegan's insightful books. In part it is because focusing on the role of the military runs counter to the modern bias that social currents determine the nature of wars and not wars the direction of the times. We also embrace a moralistic tendency to believe that violence never really solves anything. But violence has solved many things even in modern times and until we stop resorting to war to resolve inter-state conflicts, the study of war is --or should be-- of importance to us.
Goldsworthy has written a solidly researched, lively (well --fairly lively) and measured history of the Punic Wars (265-146 BC). The three wars encompassed a theater of operations that spanned the south of Europe (Spain, Italy), the Mediterranean Sea (Sicily) and northern Africa, and took more than a century to complete. The wars were the formative conflict of the Roman Republic.
Goldsworthy argues convincingly that Rome eventually destroyed Carthage for four reasons: (1) unlike other ancient states, Rome refused to concede defeat, no matter how badly or frequently its troops were beaten in battle; (2) the Romans excelled in learning from enemies, borrowing their tactics to defeat them; (3) Rome's allies remained true to Rome, regardless of defeat or victory, more often than was true of Carthage's allies; and (4) Rome possessed resources well beyond those of Carthage, both in men and goods, which made it possible for Rome to fight a multi-decade war regardless of the cost.
This is a substantial book, accessible to novice as well as professional. Alas, the days are gone when one could count on school children knowing of the conflict between Carthage and Rome because they'd read about it in their Latin classes, but the story is still well worth telling.

A pleasure to read.......2005-05-31
When I first purchased this book, I was a bit hesitant as I thought that I have read so much on the subject already. Yet I am glad I did. The book is well written and explains the subject well.
I would highly recommend it.
Invigorating and modern.......2005-03-21
Definitely a great read. Despite the fallacious pitch on the back "The cast of endlessly fascinating characters includes the generals Hannibal and Scipio, as well as treacherous chieftains, beautiful princesses, scheming politicians, and tough professional warriors.", a great and entertaining read. Almost reads like a novel, while still solidly argumented and avoiding the easy melodrama.
Battles of the Antiquity are depicted in detail, consideing logistics and actual hand-to-hand fighting.
Also an analysis that goes beyond the facts to understand social and political conditions. Sources are compared, decisions are dicussed, plausible explanations are proposed, but the author always manages not to appear as the pedant know-it-all but as a modern teacher who challenges the reader, and offers various reasons for enigmatic political or strategic decisions.
A highly entertaining and intellectually refreshing read, thank you Mr Goldsworthy. I will investigate your other books.
Worth reading.......2004-09-11
Adrian Goldsworthy provides an entertaining and accessible account of the Punic Wars, which those with no classical education should find an interesting read. Goldsworthy himself points out the fact that the British education system would have rendered this account unnecessary fifty years ago, but the decline of Latin as a school subject has left a generation (at least) unfamiliar with this long conflict.
Goldsworthy attempts to identify the facts of the battles as distinct from the conjecture, and is at pains to point out the limits of knowledge today (even with the benefits of archaeology to help lift some of the uncertainty). He also makes it clear that we must regard the sources as being tainted from the victor's perspective - for of course no Punic accounts of the conflicts survive. He uses general knowledge of the period to explain the context in which the wars were taking place, and how the changes in technology led to changes in the way in which war was being carried out.
This well-rounded account is supplemented with maps of the several of the battles, facilitating comprehension. However, there are no diagrams or pictures of other aspects of the time (a reproduction of a Trireme, for instance would have been a useful supplement to the lengthy descriptions of the text). This omission aside, the book is a good general read, going beyond a simple recitation of events, which serves to put the wars in an appropriate context.
Customer Reviews:
Superior.......2005-11-12
My students, who detest reading with a passion, invariably enjoy reading this book. Full of "good guys" and "bad guys" it forces them to choose a side, which makes it great for essay assignments.
Couldn't put it down? No...I could.......2002-07-18
Though it's not the worst book I've ever read, I had the hardest time getting past the third chapter. With promises that this book was interesting I was quite disappointed. The book reads like you are reading a geneology chart instead of a book of scandals. It throws in a name, and then EVERY person they are related to, who they are related to and so on. The story is interesting...if you can get past all the [crud]. If you're looking for an interesting book with history you've come to the wrong place. If you are looking for a history book with a few interesting high spots...you'll love it.
Excellent Social History.......1998-10-31
This book is well-written and difficult to put down. The author did his research well. It is a good explanation of the Margaret Eaton Affair and of the social mores that women were expected to live by in the 1820s and 1830s. It is also a classic example of the theory that "men get their identity by what they do; women, by their family." Margaret Eaton could not escape that she was the daughter of a "tavern-keeper" and many of the slanders against her were merely based on the prejudices of the time concerning the stereotypical behavior of the daughters of tavern-keepers.
Fine treatment of an old scandal.......1998-05-27
This book is first a description of a political scandal in the 1820s and 1830s in which a President threw his administration into turmoil over a woman. Secondly, there is a fine treatment of the role women were expected to play in the 1800s and the reasons Margaret Eaton and Rachel
Jackson did not fit in. It's a fine well written
story, very worthwhile.

Okay so they're not perfect - who is!.......2000-04-07
The one constant in the world of politics is sex. Everyone loves a juicy story about a politician who's having a affair. We love dirty laundry and the dirtier the better. Well Kerry Segrave and given you the perfect book - Sex and Politicians.
With sections like lady killers, which include Hitler, Stalin, JFK, RFK and Teddy Kennedy, GOATS like Mussolini, and Lyndon Johnson, MACHO MEN such as Ferdinand Marcos and Juan Peron are but a few of the people in the book.
Other sections include Philanderers, Swinging Bachelors, Once was Enough and Of Spies, Whores and Gays, which include Nelson Rockefeller, Castro, Gary Hart, FDR and Barney Frank. The stories are well documented and extremely compelling.
Taking just over two hours to complete the reading, I was amazed, stunned, amused and in awe at what some of these men have done and the ways they go about keeping it all quiet. For this and other books visit Branden's Website. Another great job by Branden Publishing.
