          Book Description

This rigorous, timely, and engaging study analyzes the main innovations in Japan's financial markets over the last fifteen years. It investigates how Japan's fiscal deficits and current account swings have generated self-perpetuating cycles of innovation and deregulation in financial markets. Using portfolio theory, the book presents much original material on hotly debated issues, including how internationalized Japan's capital market is and how monetary policy is reacting to innovations.

An overview chapter describes macro trends using a tripartite framework of overall asset intensity, distribution of assets among economic sectors, and the portfolio composition of each sector. Feldman notes strengthened feedback among interest rates and bases a unique taxonomy of financial innovation on this concept of feedback. The taxonomy is applied in chapter 3 to a description of micro developments in Japanese financial markets. Chapters 4 and 5 use a formal econometric model to dig deeper into questions about the nature of the loan market and monetary policy tools.

Feldman focuses next on approaches to internationalization. Chapter 6 concerns the legal approach, which emphasizes how and why regulations on capital flows changed. Surprising conclusions are reached in chapter 7 using the quantity approach, which relates who transacted how much of which types of assets, and when. The price approach, based on the concept of interest parity, puts an actual date on internationalization. These three approaches are integrated in chapter 9, in a theoretical model that shows how opening financial markets to foreigners affects exchange rates and interest rates.

A concluding chapter integrates the recurrent themes of market pressure, feedback, and deregulation in a provocative set of speculations on the future of the Japanese financial system.

Robert Alan Feldman is an economist at the International Monetary Fund.

            Book Description

In 1791 when the Constitutional Act created a legislative assembly for Upper Canada, the colonists and their British rulers decreed that the operating criminal justice system in the area be adopted from England, to avoid any undue influence from the nearby United States. In this new study of early Canadian law, David Murray has delved into the court records of the Niagara District, one of the richest sets of criminal court records surviving from Upper Canada, to analyze the criminal justice system in the district during the first half of the nineteenth century.

Murray explores how far local characteristics affected the operation of a criminal justice system transplanted from England; his analysis includes how legal processes affected Upper Canadian morality, the treatment of the insane, welfare cases, crimes committed in the district, and an examination of the roles of the Niagara magistrates, constables, and juries. Murray concludes by arguing that while the principles and culture of British justice were firmly implanted in the Niagara district, this did not prevent justice from being unequal, especially for women and visible minorities. Integrating the stories of the individuals caught up in the legal system, Murray explores law from a local perspective, and illuminates how the Niagara region's criminal justice system operated under hybrid influences from both Britain and the United States.

I bought this and the Schaum's "College Chemistry" to get my HS son up to speed for his HS Honors Chemistry course. (I had several years of chem in college.) I found this one much too simplistic to the point of being confusing in that they leave out a lot. On the other hand, the Schaum's "College Chemistry" is just perfect. The worked examples in THAT book are clear and the text is fairly comprehensive. In THAT book there are lots of extra examples to work on.

                  Book Description

Students can use this unique guide to discover not only what causes particular weather events such as avalanches and droughts but also how the weather affects such aspects of our daily lives as business and health. Hundreds of meteorological events, expository facts and fascinating anecdotes are presented to demonstrate the diverse methods people take in coping with or adjusting to the weather. Facts about such events as the worst tornadoes in history, as well as climographs depicting the weather patterns in different parts of the world help to provide the reader with a wealth of unusual information pertaining to the elements. The first part of the volume describes in detail 20 different kinds of weather elements such as rainfall, hurricanes, fog, and tornadoes, exploring specific ways each impacts on peoples lives. Students will not only learn about the worst storms in history, but will also learn how specific elements have impacted literature and folklore, how weather people predict certain weather patterns, and how people around the world cope with inclement conditions. The second part of the book identifies 10 distinct topics, ranging from history to sports and recreation, that best illustrate how weather affects human culture and activities. Each chapter concludes with a set of climographs depicting areas of the world that are particularly affected by the elements explored in that chapter, and an appendix provides web sites for further research into the areas discussed.

                    Book Description

Solitary wave theory is a rapidly developing discipline of significance in many fields of science, from ocean dynamics to plasma physics. Solitary Waves in Plasmas and in the Atmosphere offers a unified exposition of both the principles and recent advances of this fundamental theory. The authors introduce the theory of highly nonlinear phenomena in plasmas and in the atmosphere, and then study the development of these phenomena under the influence of various characteristics of the surrounding media. A great deal of attention is devoted to recent progress in stability studies using the Lyapunov method. By presenting the theory in terms of ordinary mathematics at the level of rigor customary in the physical literature, Petviashvili and Pokhotelov have written a book that is accessible to both graduates and research workers in atmospheric and ocean dynamics, mathematical and plasma physics.

                        Book Description

The veteran Wall Street Journal science reporter Marilyn Chase’s fascinating account of an outbreak of bubonic plague in late Victorian San Francisco is a real-life thriller that resonates in today’s headlines. The Barbary Plague transports us to the Gold Rush boomtown in 1900, at the end of the city’s Gilded Age. With a deep understanding of the effects on public health of politics, race, and geography, Chase shows how one city triumphed over perhaps the most frightening and deadly of all scourges.

                        5 out of 5 stars A pleasant surprise.......2006-02-09

Based on the title I would not have picked this book, but it was chosen by my book club. What a pleasure to read. Well written and one of the best overviews of what San Francisco was like at the turn of the century including during the 1906 earthquake. All of the members of the book club enjoyed this book and many have recommended it to friends.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating, fun, and a quick read despite flowery language.......2003-12-24

If I thought too much about the language, I tended to think "who was this person's editor, and what were they drinking?" But despite the intermittent distraction, I found it fascinating. The author tells a real non-fiction story - and it measures up to a good fiction read. I'm from San Francisco, so I had an added interest in the location if not the topic, but, come on, who isn't fascinated by The Plague? The author jumped around in time in a way that had no rhyme or reason for me, but again, I wasn't more than temporarily distracted by this. Worth the time.

Ms. Chase has mixed a veritable cauldron of explosive subjects about which to write something fresh: politics and race in turn-of-the-century San Francisco, the just emerging discoveries about plague vectors, topped off with brand new research into the characters who stood at the center of an outbreak of plague in San Francisco's Chinatown. She recounts how the early cases were misdiagnosed or dismissed in order to prevent damage to the city's reputation, and while the descriptions of individual cases is by its nature repetitive, the story is made all the more powerful as the epidemic's toll mounts and, finally, subsides. Ms. Chase describes the anti-rat campaign and its role in beating the plague, and pinpoints the seemingly minor difference in flea types that saved us from a much worse outbreak. Ms. Chase scrupulously avoided the easy paths to sensationalism and chose to stick to the facts. For instance, she makes the point that it was evident that the number of plague victims was being undercounted due to sufferers (or bodies) being removed from the city, possibly in collusion with authorities, but steadfastly sticks only to the proven cases in proving the existence of an "epidemic". The epidemic may have been far worse than recorded. And coming just as we were avoiding travel to certain destinations because of SARS, her book is an outstanding reminder of the responsibility of public health authorities to place the public good above all else in matters of infectious disease. If you are interested in the early days of public health in the United States, or wish to draw lessons for the present, this book is a must read!

4 out of 5 stars The Black Death in Early San Francisco.......2003-08-12

This book is not only a fascinating look into the origins of the bubonic plauge in early San Francisco, tracing the disease's trek from China through Hong Kong to Chinatown in Honolulu and spreading itself in the western frontier of California; it is a view of how racism and politics affected interfered with solution. When plague first appeared in San Francisco, it struck the Chinatown area the hardest, inflaming tensions between the whites and the immigrants. When Dr. Joseph Kinyoun threatened quaratine of the entire area, the businessmen and politicians rose against him, putting the city' s profitability before the public's health. His replacement, Rupert Blue, managed the plague clean-up campaign with much diplomacy and brought about sweeping changes that not only curbed the rise of the plague, but also enhanced the city's image.

This book has it all -- poitical intrigue, racism, a disease out of control, heroes and villains. Sometimes non-fiction can be better than most novels, and in this case, it makes for a great book well worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Sherlock Holmes in San Francisco.......2003-07-06

A medical history that rivals whodunnits as a page-turner. For all its scrupulous research and shocking parallels to our own day, it generates an excitement that many novelists would envy. The colorful characters - greedy businessmen, dishonest politicians, a timid medical establishment, an heroic doctor - live with growing danger from disease, earthquake, fire and even from city officials intent on a coverup. As a bonus, one reads a fascinating history of San Francisco at the turn of the 20th century.

                            Book Description

Traditionally it has been thought that scientific controversies can always be resolved on the basis of empirical data. Recently, however, social constructionists have claimed that the outcome of scientific debates is strongly influenced by non-evidential factors such as the rhetorical prowess and professional clout of the participants. This volume of previously unpublished essays by well-known philosophers of science presents historical studies and philosophical analyses that undermine the plausibility of an extreme social constructionist perspective while also indicating the need for a richer and more realistic account of scientific rationality.
