When I started teaching financial planning to US Air Force officers planning on reentering the general economy it was a little known subject and you had to scout up your material from pamphlets, magazines and newspapers with help from stockbrokers.
"Ernst & Young's Personal Financial Planning Guide" published by John Wiley & Sons, which is the same publishing house that publishes the JK Lasser's tax manual puts the information all in one volume.
Of intense interest to us is the chapter on starting your own business, which as authors we are doing in our senior years. The material is geared to the younger generation who are just starting out, but the advice is sound and easy to understand without an extensive background in accounting and economics.
Financial planning is rough at this period in our history, because of the skyrocketing prices of necessary goods and services not used in the consumer price index, hence they are excluded from inflation percentage calculations. Gasoline, medicines and health care are three I can name, off hand, that affect the general population, but fall outside the index. This phenomena is not addressed in the planning guide, but then Congress has not touched it since the Johnson adminstration either. It is not something that winning the lottery will answer for an individual, but it is like trying to hold a large balloon half-full of water in one-hand and keep it round.
"Personal Financial Planning Guide' is the best we have found for a realistic look at all aspects of financial planning. The table of contents and index are outstanding for locating information.

Absolutely one of the best financial planning reference tools around! I especially like that it brings to light concerns of areas you may not be immediately affected by (aging parents) but should be planning for now. Great introduction to personal financial management.......2006-12-27

I use this as a text at a university when we cover personal budgeting and finance issues during one week of class. I have used it since March 2006 in undergrad classes. Required reading includes Chapters 1, 18, and 26 along with pgs. 47-54 (Savings), pgs. 97-99 (Annuity), and pgs. 114-118 (Real Estate). Students read more of the book on their own and say this is a keeper they found to be invaluable!

Now in its 5th Edition this is still a great reference book for anyone wanting to either start on a financial plan or complete their annual review.

Updated with current information it is always a useful reference tool. Many Financial Services Professionals keep a copy handy for a quick check.

Parents would be well advised to share their copy with their children. It will give them good advice on how to start looking after their financial future.

This is a great tool for most of us to have.

work of Miller and grad students.......2007-06-28

In the late 1970s when I was a graduate student at Stanford, Professor Rupert Miller, along with Lincoln Moses, Brad Efron and Byron Brown did consulting work primarily for the Stanford University Medical School. This work provided funding for a number of Ph.D. students in the Statistics Department Graduate School. The work served to teach the students about real world problems and how to conduct research. Each student was given a project where they worked independently with the client but they would meet as a group with the professors to discuss their progress. For some this work became part of their Ph.D. thesis. Although I was not part of this group many of my fellow graduate students were. All the chapters in the book are case studies and they were prepared by the graduate students with editorial help from Professor Miller. Among the students that participated in this were Carol Link, John Hyde, Sue Leurgans, Gail Gong and Javier Rojo. In those years they had the idea of writing up the case studies for publication in a book which John Wiley and Sons agreed to publish. This book is a marvelous collection of examples from the many student projects and reflects on the high level of statistical research work that was produced by Stanford graduate students and faculty during those years. This program had been going on for many years prior to this but this gives a flavor for the problems approaches and solutions that were available in the period from 1975-1980. Not all of the modern techniques were available to them in those days and the computing power was nowhere near what it is today. Nevertheless this is a very interesting book for today's biostatistician as a tool in how to do biostatistical consulting, how to advance the state of the art to solve problems and how to present and documnet the results. The late Rupert Miller was a great writer and teacher and his organization and writing skill show through in this collection of case studies. In one article John Hyde presents the difficulty in collecting and properly interpreting data from Channing House to study survival curves. Although not part of this casebook, Gail Gong's work on bootstrap approaches to subset selection in a logistic regression problem
was motivated by a case study for Doctor Gregory in the Stanford Medical School.

Spontaneous Emission and Laser Oscillation in Microcavities presents the basics of optical microcavities. The volume is divided into ten chapters, each written by respected authorities in their areas. The book surveys several methods describing free space spontaneous emission and discusses changes in the feature due to the presence of a cavity. The effect of dephasing of vacuum fields on spontaneous emission in a microcavity and the effects of atomic broadening on spontaneous emission in an optical microcavity are examined. The book details the splitting in transmission peaks of planar microcavities containing semiconductor quantum wells. A simple but useful way to consider the change in the spontaneous emission rate from the viewpoint of mode density alteration by wavelength-sized cavities is provided. Authors also discuss the spontaneous emission in dielectric planar microcavities. Spontaneous emission in microcavity surface emitting lasers is covered, as are the effects of electron confinement in semiconductor quantum wells, wires, and boxes also given. The volume extends the controlling spontaneous emission phenomenon to laser oscillation. It's as if Stephen Mitchell had been working on three books and decided that instead of finishing them separately, he would just combine them into one. There is the fictional story of a Jewish man who has the jarring experience, while high on broccoli (prepared in the secret Hasidic fashion), of identifying himself with Hitler. He exterminates Jews and feels proud to have done it. Subsequently, in the back of his mind, he is preoccupied with unraveling the problem of evil, a process that leads him to Zen practice and a brilliant account of its tribulations and rewards. Then there is the nonfictional essay "Against Angels," an erudite lambasting of the popular fascination with angels. We get not only a summary of it but a philosophical history, an outline, and extensive passages. The third story is of a man's encounter with the angel Gabriel, who doesn't know why he's there, but who initiates the man into the orgiastic bliss of archangeldom and troops him through the heavens--and the resemblance to the Divine Comedy doesn't stop there. What (barely) links these stories is that the Zen practitioner is the author of "Against Angels" and, ironically, the one to whom Gabriel appears. If there is an abiding theme, it is that the suffering of humanity is redemptive. In this first fictional outing for Mitchell, it is his laid back, whimsical tone that really holds it all together and makes each story worth reading for its own sake. --Brian Bruya

Not worth reading.......2007-01-17

I'm surprised at the amount of good reviews here. I will read just about anything and I was barely able to finish this book. I thought it was ridiculously pretentious. The author tries to make a book out of disconnected, half-baked ideas that he doesn't feel like explaining. Some of the reviewers seem to love his 'poetic' style, but I personally got annoyed at that 'style' which generally consisted of someone trying to explain overly-lofty ideas with a metaphoric style such as hearing colours and tasting sounds. It doesn't tell you anything about what the character was experiencing and just leaves you feeling completely disconnected from what is happening in the story.
I also wasn't aware of the amount of Zen I was getting into when starting this book. I don't mind, I'm Buddhist myself, but it definitely didn't make for a good story. And the amazon review at the top of the page mentioned something about having 3 books into one...I would have to agree, but not in a good way. It jumped around and most things had nothing to do with each other, no matter what 'higher meaning' spin you wanted to put on it. I would skip over this book. It was a chore to get through and I felt empty and annoyed at the end that I just read that whole book.

Even before I finsihed with this book, i found myself going back and re-reading sections. The author has the most amazing talant with words that I believe I've read to date. While the book can be a little slow, it is definately a must read for anyone with an appreciaiton for fine writing. It is funny, moving, and more than worth the time I've spent re-reading and highlighting my favorite passages. I tend to loan out books after I've read them and sometimes don't get them back. This book hasn't left my room for fear that I'll never see it again. I plan to tell any would-be borrowers that it's worth their money to buy their own copy.

Revelations.......2000-03-14

What an astonishing experience this was -- I had just decided Zen was too cold and empty (like Jack Kerouac, another Catholic-turned-rabid-Zen-Buddhist, who later repudiated Zen, saying: "Zen leaves me cold now. I have felt the presence of angels.") So when I saw this title, "Meetings with the Archangel," I thought, "Yes! Let's forget Zen and read about gorgeous, colorful, swooping angels!" Imagine my surprise when the most riveting part of the book turned to be about, you guessed it, Zen. My mind is still reeling.

A self spiritual reconcilation.......2000-02-27

This is the first spiritual book with a deep literary, poetic, full of wisdom that I'd have ever read. It was very helpful for me to reconciliate with my soul and to accept my human nature. I recommend this book to all the people who had read spirituallity books and are worried to solve their karmas and lift their good vibrations stat. This book is helpful to relax your soul and understand your human nature.

I highly recommend the tape version that i listened to. Mitchell has an excellent understanding of the world and presents it in a very approachable way.

Second in the series.......2006-07-12

This book is the follow-up to Turnbull's equally strong work on the Teutonic Knights and their castles in Prussia. The book nicely covers the history of the coming of Christianity to Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, and the resultant need of an armed force to protect the clergy. The cut away drawings of a Convent Castle, Riga Castle and a Gun Tower are excellent. My only gripe is that this book, easily, could have been incorporated into the first volume. It only has 60 pages of real informational content.

An overview of the history of the Teutonic Knights in the Latvia/Estonia region.......2006-05-15

"Crusader Castles of the Teutonic Knights (2): The Stone Castles of Latvia and Estonia 1185-1560" by Stephen Trunbull is the companion volume to his work on the Teutonic castles in Prussia. Each volume deals neatly with its own geographic region and history, so it is not exactly a sequel, but this book definitely is recommended to those that are looking for more history on the Teutonic Order. The history of the Teutonic Knights in the Latvia/Estonia region was noticeably different from Prussia. The Teutonic Knights actually moved into and took over the castles established by another religious crusader order called the Swordbrothers.

I did not find this book to be as easy to read as some of Turnbull's other books, making it a slower read having to consult a dictionary more often. It may be a good starting point to learn about the castles of the Teutonic Knights in Latvia and Estonia, beside the fact of it being one of the few books available on the topic, but it may take a bit more dedication and effort than most introductory books. The color illustrations by Peter Dennis are exceptional and bring to life what these magnificent castles looked like in their prime. However, I do think it would have been helpful if more of the illustrations and floor plans of the castles were located on the same or opposite page so a side-by-side comparison may be done, preventing flipping though the whole book trying to make a match. Overall, "Crusader Castles of the Teutonic Knights (2)" will provide you with a nice overview of the history of the castles and people who made and fought in them, as well as let you have a good idea of what they looked like with the photos and illustrations.

History of an area that is not usually covered.......2004-06-30

This book takes up were the first book on "Crusader Castles of the Teutonic Knights" left off, moving from Prussia to Latvia and Estonia and moving along the time line from 1185-1560.

The author covers the history of Latvia and Estonia (Livonia) in regards to the time leading up to the Teutonic Knights and their castle networks and then covers the Knights, their Crusades and control in that area. The conversion of the local people by the 'Brethern of the Sword' is examined and how they became absorbed by the Teutonic Knights. The history of these countries is well covered from the system of fortresses and how it helped them control the area to why the area was of interest to the Knights and the Church. The research is in depth, giving some very good accounts of the time.

Again, the illustrations stand out as enabling the reader to clearly visualize the castles, the maps give outstanding historical reference to the geography of the time and the pictures of the castles in the present day included by the author present a very well rounded view of the importance of these fortresses in the campaigns of the Teutonic Knights, and how they enabled these Knights to implement their control over the lives of the peoples of Livonia.

For those with interests in the Teutonic Knights, their means and methods of crusading and a good overall history of the Castles of this area, this is an excellent primer, easy to read, very detailed, well illustrated and a good reference tool. medievalcrusadesbabe

To much of authors own opinion........2003-09-24

I read most of this book, up to the tenth chapter, and decided to put it down because the author made some claims in this book that are not true.

First of all the author stated that AFRICA WAS THE BIRTHPLACE OF CHRISTIANITY, this statement is not true. Christianity is EUROPEAN FABRICATION. Europeans did not have a god conscious, so they had to fabricate one. They had no history so they had to fabricate that as well. African people were the first people on this planet, we were here before so called, christopher columbus discovered america.

The Europeans also had to come up with something to edify there race and keep African folks in slavey. Europeans were the first ones to come up with the white and black distinction. This distinction today is still keeping a hold on our people and all other races for that matter.

Why is it that every other race is subject to the Europeans theology and European history. And why is it that true world history is not taught in schools today. Why isn`t the truth revealed that Jews were black and the ancient Egyptians were black and the real history of Africa. Hmmmmmmm!

Another fabrication that the author stated is that Jesus existed, along with Cane. The entire lineage to Jesus was a lie. African folks bought into this lie and feed it to our children.

Christianity was forced upon African people, christianity maintains control by submission and christianity even has family members tossed to the curb if the do not believe the European doctrine. People you question christianity are looked down upon and children are brought up not to think for themselves but to belive in what there parents believe.

If Jesus was shot in the head with a gun, we would be wearing little gold guns around our neck. We fall for anything instead of really looking at the root of christianty, if the root is wrong then the branches have to me messed up as well.

There are three movies I recommend people watch, the first is Sankofa and the second one is The Last Supper by T.G. Alea, which talks about forced christiantiy. The Naked Truth is the third one, in TNT you will find there were 16 other dieties that had the same birthday of December 25th, dated before Jesus Christ. And you will also find that the Bible is nothing more that astrology. The bible is the GREATEST STORY EVERY TOLD.
