Book Description
Hyman Minsky is renowned for his theoretical and empirical investigation of the capitalist economy. In this book, a distinguished list of contributors provides an authoritative account of his contribution to the analysis of capitalism and, more particularly, to the fields of monetary and post Keynesian economics.
The authors first provide an introduction to Hyman Minsky's economic legacy before going on to discuss his role in analyzing the macroeconomy, monetary policy and instability. In detail, they consider the structural instability of a sophisticated market economy, the NAIRU, Minsky's financial fragility hypothesis, his business cycle theory, his investment theory and debt inflation.
This thought-provoking book will be of interest to scholars of financial economics, post Keynesian economics and the history of economic thought.

Book Description
Teleost (bony) fishes are found in all types of aquatic environment and are extremely diverse behaviorally. Their evolutionary success is partly due to their striking behavioral plasticity; as such they are also extremely useful organisms for the study of mechanistic and functional models of
behavior. Considerable progress has been made over the past decade in understanding how behavior, ecology, and genetics interact to determine individual survival and reproductive success in fishes, and thus the evolution of their behavior. Behavioural Ecology of Teleost Fishes reviews the latest
advances in behavioral adaptations for survival and reproduction in fishes, and proposes new directions and approaches for future research. The book focuses on habitat selection and space use, foraging, predator avoidance and evasion, and reproduction. It also considers how the behaviour of
individuals affects ecological processes at population and community levels.
The book benefits students, teachers, and researchers interested in the behavior and ecology of fishes, as well as those with a general interest in behavioral ecology. It is also a valuable reference source for biologists, aquaculturists, and conservationists.

Description:
The occurrence of intra-sexual variation in reproduction is a widespread phenomenon in teleosts. One such form of variation consists in the occurrence of alternative male types: males that invest resources in mate attraction and males that exploit the investment of the former males, by trying to sneak fertilizations during spawning. These alternative reproductive tactics can be classified according to their plasticity during the life span of the individuals (i.e., fixed vs. sequential vs. reversible). Furthermore, the differences between morphs within a given species may involve a set of different traits, including reproductive behavior, the differentiation of male morphological traits, and the patterns of gonad tissue allocation and the differentiation of gonadal accessory glands. In this paper, we review the available data on four species exhibiting different types of intra-sexual plasticity in reproduction that have been studied in our lab. The data on the proximate mechanisms, androgens and forebrain arginine-vasotocin (AVT), underlying these alternative tactics suggest that between-morph differences in androgen levels, especially in 11-ketotestosterone, are especially present in species where the alternative male types have evolved morphological traits that are tactic-specific (i.e., sexual polymorphisms) and that differences in AVT appear to be related to between-morph differences in the expression of courtship behavior. Therefore, this comparative approach leads us to propose that the different endocrine systems are involved in the differentiation of different sets of traits that make up alternative phenotypes, and that the differentiation of alternative tactics is not controlled by a single endocrine system (e.g., androgens).

Description:
There is increasing evidence that growth hormone (GH) has important behavioral effects in fish, but the underlying mechanisms are not well understood. To investigate if peripherally administered GH influences the monoaminergic activity of the brain, and how this is correlated to behavior, juvenile rainbow trout were implanted intraperitoneally with ovine GH. Fish were either kept isolated or in groups of five. The physical activity and food intake of the isolated fish were observed after 1 and 7 days, when brains were also sampled. The content of serotonin, dopamine, and noradrenaline and their metabolites in hypothalamus, telencephalon, optic tectum, and brain stem was then analyzed. For fish kept isolated for 7 days following implant, GH increased swimming activity and the levels of the dopamine metabolite 3, 4-hydroxy-phenylacetic acid (DOPAC) were higher in all brain parts examined. In the optic tectum, the levels of the dopamine metabolite homovanillic acid (HVA) were lowered by the GH treatment. One-day GH implant did not affect behavior or monoamine levels of isolated fish. In the fish kept in groups, a 7-day GH implant increased the hypothalamic levels of DOPAC, but not in the other brain parts examined, which may indicate an effect on the brain dopaminergic system from social interactions. It can be concluded that peripherally administered GH may function as a neuromodulator, affecting the dopaminergic activity of the rainbow trout brain, and this is associated with increased swimming activity.

Description:
In Astatotilapia burtoni, dominant males have higher levels of sex steroid hormones than subordinate males. Because of the complex regulatory interactions between steroid hormones and receptors, we asked whether dominance is also associated with variation in sex steroid receptor gene expression. Using quantitative PCR, we compared the expression of specific subtypes of androgen (AR) and estrogen (ER) receptor genes between dominant and subordinated males in 3 divisions of the brain, the pituitary, and the testes. We measured mRNA levels of AR-@a, AR-@b, ER-@a, ER-@ba, and ER-@bb, gonadotropin-releasing hormone 1 (GnRH1), and GnRH receptor 1 (GnRH-R1) relative to 18S rRNA. In the anterior part of the brain, we found that dominant males had higher mRNA expression of AR-@a, AR-@b, ER-@ba, and ER-@bb, but not ER-@a, compared to subordinate males. This effect of dominance was reflected in a positive correlation between testes size and AR-@a, AR-@b, ER-@ba, and ER-@bb in the anterior brain. In addition, mRNA levels of all ARs and ERs in the anterior brain were positively correlated with mRNA level of GnRH1. In the middle and posterior portions of the brain, as well as the testes, steroid receptor mRNA levels were similar among dominants and subordinates. In the pituitary, ER-@a mRNA level was positively correlated with testes size and AR-@a mRNA was positively correlated with GnRH-R1 mRNA level. These data suggest that dominant male brains could be more sensitive to sex steroids, which may contribute to the increased complexity of the behavioral repertoires of dominant males.

Description:
Field and laboratory studies of weakly electric and sound-producing teleost fishes demonstrate how steroidal and non-steroidal hormones mediate the translation of neural events into behavior. The development of this research program has depended upon an interdisciplinary neuroethological approach that has characterized the neurophysiological properties of the motor and sensory pathways that lead to the production and detection of easily quantified highly stereotyped behaviors, namely, electric organ discharges (EODs) and vocalizations. Neuroethological studies of these teleosts have now integrated a behavioral neuroendocrinology approach that has provided several examples of how hormone-sensitive neurobiological traits contribute to adaptive behavioral plasticity in natural habitats. As such, these studies provide guideposts for comparable studies in other groups of teleosts and vertebrates in general.

Book Description
Characterization of Radiation Damage by Transmission Electron Microscopy details the electron microscopy methods used to investigate complex and fine-scale microstructures, such as those produced by fast-particle irradiation of metals or ion implantation of semiconductors. The book focuses on the methods used to characterize small point-defect clusters, such as dislocation loops, because the coverage in general microscopy textbooks is limited and omits many of the problems associated with the analysis of these defects. The book also describes in situ, high-resolution, and analytical techniques. Techniques are illustrated with examples, providing a solid overview of the contribution of TEM to radiation damage mechanisms. The book is most useful to researchers in, or entering into, the field of defect analysis in materials.

Book Description
Satire, sarcasm, and hyperbole abound in this tale that has been likened to a modern-day adult humor version of Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Five million dollars are at stake in a winner-takes-all contest between two bitter rivals who also happen to be cousins. By the terms of their grandfather's will, 26-year-old amoral social parasite Kurt Stafford is first in line to receive a five-million-dollar inheritance. According to the terms of the will, however, Kurt must either finish a semester of college and gain admittance into his grandfather's fraternity or join the marines and finish boot camp before he can lay claim to the riches. Should Kurt fail, the inheritance will go to his 18-year-old cousin, Lyman. Both have their sights set on the dough, and they will stoop to any extreme to end up the winner. Bribing a Dartmouth-bound student to take and pass the college entrance exam and tricking up charges of statutory rape, plagiarism, and sex are just some of the measures taken in this completely politically incorrect, bawdy narrative.

THIS BOOK WAS THE FRIGGIN' BOMB!.......2005-11-07
GOD ALMIIGHTY SH%T FIRE, LEROY, THIS BOOK KILLED ME! From the first sentence to the last, I was completlely consumed. Ron Carpol is one sick minded brilliant storyteller, whose writing visually moves you throughout this book. Depending upon how your brain is wired, the main character, KURT STAFFORD, is either the antogonist or the protagonist and whichever side you are on, you will not be disappointed. This is the perfect book for people who love to read and those whom do not. GREAT!
Could not put this book down!!! Absolutely hilarious!!!.......2005-04-03
This was such a funny book! I literally could not put it down and was so bummed when it was over. I have recommended it to all of my friends and they have all thought it was hilarious too. I can't wait until the follow up book comes out. This would make a hilarious, money-making movie!!
Hilarious!!! A Must Read!!!.......2005-04-02
This book was hilarious and I could not put it down. Recommend to everyone you know!!!!

Customer Reviews:
Remembering something that happened differently.......2005-03-23
Well might they call this the "revised edition" because if ever there was an example of "revisionist history" Groneman's book would be it. Did De La Pena write his own diary or not? Was it a forgery written years and years later? Groneman knows that on this work a lot of our interpretation of the "13 days" depends. He introduces the material carefully, and weighs the pros and cons like a pro rather than a con. But all in all, when we get to the end of the book, most people will still feel that they donb't really know what happened, for most of the truth is lost to the mists of time, and when you go to the memorial and visit the Alamo site, you are struck by the sadness of it all (and also, as many have noted, by how small the building itself must have been). In comparison, the movies paradoxically create their own reality; we see a mighty building peopled with real, breathing people with virtues and faults and problems we can apprehend (John Wayne, Lawrence Harvey, Dennis Quaid and all the rest).
Out of Groneman's Alamo books, this is the one to buy, even though it has the least amount of "him" in it.
A great resource for studying the Alamo.......2001-11-14
By compiling all known first-hand accounts of the siege of the Alamo (including some with a debatable authenticity, duly noted by the author), Bill Groneman has produced an excellent, handy resource for studying this famous incident. Going back to the original sources is always the best way to gain a sense of what really happened, and "Eyewitness to the Alamo" lets the reader do this with a minimum of trouble. Groneman's comments about the various source documents are a helpful guide to their reliability, although of course not everyone would necessarily agree with his every assessment (I have particularly in mind the De la Pena "Diary"). This book makes a great companion to Alan Huffines "Blood of Noble Men" in which Huffines arranges excerpts from many of these accounts into chronological order to tell the Alamo story.
Too long and needs a summary.......2001-01-11
The book is set up as a series of accounts from numerous sources. Some are verified accounts and others are third-party accounts.
The oldest discovered accounts are at the front of the book and the newest discovered accounts are at the back. As you might imagine "history" changes over time so that the older accounts tend to be believed while the newer ones are mostly fiction.
Unfortunately this makes the reading after about a hundred pages irrelevant as the author believes the latter accounts to be false, which makes me wonder why I would want to read those accounts at all.
The other aspect is there is no summary of all the accounts to give a clear picture of what really happened. I know that the author's intent was to be unbiased, but he could give the accounts then make a summary based on his investigations. This would wrap up many loose ends, which would make the book complete.
WINDOWS INTO THE PAST........1999-07-21
What's most obvious, by its nature, can easily escape our attention. It may therefore be worth noting that the Alamo events of 1836 are long beyond the recall of any person alive today. Theoretically, there might now be some living centenarian whose grandfather could have known James Bowie, or at least been in his presence and spoken with him - but this is conceptual, and though conjecture is fruitless it's still fascinating. We can't talk with the defenders who perished at the Alamo or with the non-combatants who survived it, some of whom actually lived into the 20th century - but in this book by Bill Groneman, EYEWITNESS TO THE ALAMO, they operatively speak to us, if not in the literal sense, then surely effectively.
Gathering information is only one facet of a researcher's work. Finding what he seeks is one of the more time-consuming features of his job. What distinguishes this book from most others is its efficiency: it presents information which apparently can't be found elsewhere in a single book, thereby saving time and effort for both the historian and the knowledgeable reader.
By their immediacy, the accounts presented here - many first-person Alamo reports by those who were there - are as insightful as the very concept of offering them in one self-contained volume. Theoretically many could have compiled such a book, but no-one else did it. This collection of accounts can be a conspicuous blessing to those interested in Western history generally, in Texas history specifically, and in the Alamo in particular.
It seems no adobe brick was left unturned in the research for this work. It is, in a very real sense, a treasury of material taken wherever possible from primary sources. While the reports themselves sometimes contradict those of others - people witness events through their own eyes and relate them from viewpoints tinted by their own experience - we're offered accounts of Alamo events from those very people who endured them. Effectively there's no substitute for this.
This book also offers a balance many others don't: reports from both the American and Mexican sides. Some of the accounts were written down or told to others long after the siege, but those who were there were by definition closer to the scene than those who weren't. The collective discrepancies in their reports (people are in fact human) prevent us from knowing "precisely" what happened at the Alamo in 1836, but that these accounts were offered by those who literally lived through the events gives us not only a more immediate picture, but perhaps more importantly, bottom-line details. If the aggregate details don't resolve conjectures or provide explanations to unanswered (or unanswerable) questions, they are still details which shed more light on what transpired there more than a century and a half ago.
While other historians compile and try to present an amalgam of data, Groneman takes us into a courtroom and displays primary evidence unsullied by legendary gloss, the ghosts of myth, and the passage of 16 decades. He places before us, devoid of cosmetic veneer, the raw material from which we can form our own opinions and draw our own conclusions.
Walter Lord, author of A NIGHT TO REMEMBER and A TIME TO STAND, wrote about another Groneman book, ALAMO DEFENDERS, "...an indispensable tool for anyone working on the Alamo... I wish I had it when I was doing my research" - an ultimate compliment, and the same sentiment can be applied to EYEWITNESS TO THE ALAMO. Interested in the Alamo? Get this book. Have no interest in the Alamo? This book can get you interested.
JEFFREY DANE
Fantastic.......1998-08-10
A simple straight forward book that gives each account with an unbiased rendering. The notes that accompany the where and why and when of each account are fabulous and allow the reader to debunk some of the persistent myths from both sides of the border.
Groneman has authorered a number of books on the Alamo and the men who were there. Each new book is better than the last.
(The only negative thing is the fact that each additional book is based on research that was compiled at the time of the original search. Why not have one book insetead of dribbling them out like a tv mini-series.)
Still a great work and one that all historians should read and heed.

Indian friend of mine.......2004-12-03
Gerald Betty's work "Before the Reservation," is a testament to his skills as a comanche warrior, even today. Although he rides a Land Rover instead of a Palomino, I'm sure he could still survive on the open range. I laughed, I cried. Betty is a genius.
Focusing especially on how the bonds of kinship.......2002-11-14
A highly recommended contribution to Native American Studies, Comanche Society: Before the Reservation by Gerald Betty (History Department, Texas A&M, Corpus Christi) is a meticulous and scholarly study of Comanche society from the beginning of New World Colonization by European powers through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Focusing especially on how the bonds of kinship affected the interplay within Comanche clans, and how the Comanches came to adopt horses, pastoralism, and other Iberian traits into their own culture, Comanche Society is a fascinating and analytical history of the evolution of this Native American nation.
