Rip-off.......2005-10-30

I am using the 11th edition of this "textbook".

The first thing that I disliked about this book was that the student slides have to be purchased separately. With the book not covering the material in depth, I thought I would find atleast the student site on the web would be useful but was dismayed that we need to pay additional (this on top of $108 + taxes) for using the web features.

About the book, the book doesn't cover all the items in detail as I had expected. Examples used in the textbook is very lame. Please compare to "Financial Accounting: A Decision-Making Approach, 2nd Edition" to see for yourself what I am trying to convey!

The end of chapter summary is another letdown. I usually use the end of chapter material as a revision tool before each class and before exams. The organization of this book's end of chapter material totally unusable.

I am not all whining abt the book. The only good thing about the book is the chapter end exercises ('Applying your Knowledge' and 'Using real data') which are very challenging and if you have the time to work on them will really help understand the subject. Again if they had given these real data problems in the web those pages could have been used to explain the subject in detail.

A word for fellow students, if you plan to use you textbook as future reference book this is not the one for you! If your instructor 'prescribes' this book, believe me... there are better textbooks than this.

Differing perceptions of the impacts on hydrological functions of tropical forest clearance and conversion to other land uses have given rise to growing and often heated debate about directions of public environmental policy in southeast Asia. In order to help bring more balance and clarity to such debate, this paper reviews a wide range of available scientific evidence with respect to the influence exerted by the presence or absence of a good forest cover on regional climate (rainfall), total and seasonal water yield (floods, low flows), as well as on different forms of erosion and catchment sediment yield under humid tropical conditions in general and in southeast Asia in particular. It is concluded that effects of forest disturbance and conversion on rainfall will be smaller than the average decrease of 8% predicted for a complete conversion to grassland in southeast Asia because the radiative properties of secondary regrowth quickly resemble those of the original forest again. In addition, under the prevailing 'maritime' climatic conditions, effects of land-cover change on climate can be expected to be less pronounced than those of changes in sea-surface temperatures. Total annual water yield is seen to increase with the percentage of forest biomass removed, with maximum gains in water yield upon total clearing. Actual amounts differ between sites and years due to differences in rainfall and degree of surface disturbance. As long as surface disturbance remains limited, the bulk of the annual increase in water yield occurs as baseflow (low flows), but often rainfall infiltration opportunities are reduced to the extent that groundwater reserves are replenished insufficiently during the rainy season, with strong declines in dry season flows as a result. Although reforestation and soil conservation measures are capable of reducing the enhanced peak flows and stormflows associated with soil degradation, no well-documented case exists where this has also produced a corresponding increase in low flows. To some extent this will reflect the higher water use of the newly planted trees but it cannot be ruled out that soil water storage opportunities may have declined too much as a result of soil erosion during the post-clearing phase for remediation to have a net positive effect. A good plant cover is generally capable of preventing surface erosion and, in the case of a well-developed tree cover, shallow landsliding as well, but more deep-seated (>3m) slides are determined rather by geological and climatic factors. A survey of over 60 catchment sediment yield studies from southeast Asia demonstrates the very considerable effects of such common forest disturbances as selective logging and clearing for agriculture or plantations, and, above all, urbanisation, mining and road construction. The 'low flow problem' is identified as the single most important 'watershed' issue requiring further research, along with the evaluation of the time lag between upland soil conservation measures and any resulting changes in sediment yield at increasingly large distances downstream. It is recommended to conduct such future work within the context of the traditional paired catchment approach, complemented with process-based measuring and modelling techniques. Finally, more attention should be paid to the underlying geological controls of catchment hydrological behaviour when analysing the effect of land use change on (low) flows or sediment production.

An incredible resource.......2006-03-21

I am using this book as a reference while homeschooling my middle-school son. It is far and away the best book of science experiments and demonstrations at this level that I have encountered. Every possible chemistry topic at the middle and high school level is covered with multiple examples, all well -indexed and clearly explained. Many can be done with simple materials around the house although some require more sophisticated glassware and a few involve chemicals and/or procedures that would require an institutional setting (for example, needing a fume hood). The latter are well indicated. Best of all, the activities are FUN--we did the Cartesian Diver today and it was a blast!

My only very minor gripe is that a few activities are repeated several times in slightly different formats. More thorough editing and/or cross-referencing would be helpful.

I would recommend the book for homeschoolers such as myself who want to give their students real lab experiences, and also probably for "regular" teachers in middle or high schools.

An innovative compilation of chemistry experiments.

This book has tons of labs and demonstrations. Many of the labs and demonstrations can be found in other chemistry texts and on-line, this book brings them all together with good explainations and illustrations. Herr and Cunningham have included additional information for the teacher and there are thoughtful extension questions provided for the students. This is a good resource book. I allow my students to try the labs after school and when they come in on their free periods. My only gripe is that it sometimes takes careful reading to follow the procedures as they are written in paragraph form.

this is a how-dunnit, not a who-dunnit.......2004-03-30

I am so glad my friend reccommended this very entertaining mystery. I enjoyed not only the clever mystery, but also the very good humor. This is one of those easy, light reads, but well worth my time.
It reminded me some of the movie, "National Lampoon's Vacation" or something like that, but it was not the same. The plot just seems to get thicker and thicker, and funnier and funnier. If you like light humorous mysteries, I think you will like this one.

I really laughed a lot, and it was a nice mystery to boot.......2003-04-04

My friend at work loaned me book to read while I was on vacation. I just couldn't put it down. Being from Alabama, and being a fan of Anne George, it seemed so comfortable and like other books I have enjoyed. To be honest, I laughed out loud for much of the first half of the book. The second half of the book becomes more serious however, and we, as readers become more absorbed into the mystery. I really liked it, and I will probably read it again. I especially liked the way the story was so easy to understand, the characters were weird but beleivable, and it was just a fun read. I reccommend this book to anyone who enjoys a murder mystery with a healthy dash of humor.

Really funny, and a good little mystery to boot!.......2003-03-01

I just got through reading this book and I was very pleased. If you like a good mystery with a dash of humor, this book is for you. It's a little hard to describe the writting style, because it is very unusual. There is a lot of slapstick humor, but some very subtle humor, and some very touching moments too. I particularly liked the variou offbeat characters. Aunt Flossie, the main character is crazy as a bedbug.
Basically the story goes like this: a family from Alabama drives down to Miami to retrieve a family member, Aunt Flossie, from a beachside mansion owned by an evil millionaire. The first part of the story tells about the hilarious adventures they encounter on the trip, and the second half gets the reader involved in the murder part. And I really liked the surprise ending. You will too, I think.
Even though I really enjoyed the story and laughed out loud a few time, and I highly reccomend the book, I can't in good faith give it five stars. Sometimes I got confused because of the aurthor's devilish way of using fast-forward, and flashback. Also there was a bit of foul language, but really as I think about it, not as bad as you hear on television. All and all, I liked it and recommend it.

Great biography of a Western Civil War barbarian. When it came to being ruthless during The American Civil War, Bloody Bill broke all bounderies. Not for the weak of heart!!

It could have been much better.......2005-12-07

Thomas Goodrich did an outstanding job of researching his subject. I've read many other accounts of Anderson, but this is the most complete and revealing. It's unfortunate that Stackpole insisted on bringing Castel into the mix, as the two men's writing styles are so different. The end product, though the best work so far on a fascinating man, doesn't equal Goodrich's original work.

Well researched, not well written.......2004-11-29

This book reads like a romantic western novel. A description of Anderson: "Dressed entirely in black- hat, velvet shirt, pants, boots- he was lean and sinewy and looked taller sitting in the saddle of his large black horse than his actual height of five ten." (p. 11, hardback edition) It continues like that for another 150 pages or so. The only thing missing is voluptuous maidens.
Castel's biography of Quantrill doesn't read like this, and Goodrich's "Black Flag" doesn't really have much style at all, as it is mostly quotes from primary sources. I don't know why they felt the need to write this the way they did, but it ruins the story. Both authors have done their work in researching, but the writing leaves much to be desired. A definitive account of Anderson still needs to be written.

Title Says It All.......2004-10-07

Bloody Bill Anderson was a product of savagery in the early days of the Civil War's influence on Kansas and Missouri. The border war there was bloody and brutal. An eye for an eye conflict that escalated beyond anyone's imagination. The region was devastated. The atrocities that men were willing to commit against each other on both sides of the fratricide in that area are horrendous. Rocketing out of that soup came Bloody Bill. He is the prototype of a deadly psychopath. He was sadistic, ruthless and devoid of conscience.

Castel and Goodrich have outdone themselves in taking what little historical data is available to present as thorough an accounting of Bill Anderson's life as you're likely to find. They hone in on two of his most infamous rampages around Centralia, Missouri. You'll believe you were an eyewitness. However, they don't fabricate the stories or engage in fiction. The book is thoroughly researched and very credible in every detail. They could only have exceeded in this endeavor if there were more firsthand historical data to draw from.

Fact is Bloody Bill was a real individual and these events really did transpire. You will be transfixed even as you are horrified.

Must read for Students of the War of Secession.......2003-07-24

I would have to rate this book 5 stars if only becuase it was not a revisionist history foisted on an unsuspecting public by vengeful victor sympathizers.

The first time I ever heard about Bill Anderson was in the movie, "The Outlaw Josey Wales". Needless to say, the two minute portrayal was enough to give me a completely wrong impression of who Bill Anderson was. Several years later, this book was recommended to me by several participants on a internet Confederate discussion board.

Real information about William Anderson is scarce. The authors of this book have done an outstanding job of piecing together what little there is to give us a semblance of a picture of a very effective guerilla fighter during the War of Southern Secession. There are still many holes in the story, but you will not be disappointed by this book. The authors show no bias, which is very rare in books about this historical period, and they present their research like a documentary.
