    Book Description

This book explains development, underdevelopment, economic crisis, structural adjustment, and class formation in one of the most unequal societies in the world. Intensified uneven development in Zimbabwe is mainly due to the periodic rise of financial capital, which has occurred, historically, in the 1890s, 1920s, 1950s, and the late 1980s - early 1990s with effects evident across urban and rural space and geographical scale.

1 out of 5 stars The colapse of Zimbabwe's economy.......2003-01-23

The total collapse of the economy is totally the fault of the ruling party Zanu PF.
The spending by the rulers of taxpayers money is well known and it has all to do with power and the thinking that all the land and its people belongs to Zanu PF. They should have left at least a decade ago for new ideas and new leaders, who in turn also should stepdown when their time is up.
The tragedy of Zimbabwe is a following up story of Africa.
Hopefully South Africa will not go down the same road.
Be carefull of too much power and power crazy leaders.

Any country that demands that the photo of the leader should be displace in every shop, restaurant or railway station is heading to total power.

5 out of 5 stars Best book yet on Zimbabwe.......1999-09-08

This is the best book yet on Zimbabwe's political economy. It is full of detailed information on how and why Zimbabwe has become what it is. I particularly appreciated Bond's casting of this in the era of globalisation and the differing effects money capital has had on the country. This book's theoretical framework could usefully be deployed to other African countries, not least South Africa. His Marxist stance is welcome, in era where neo-liberalism has achieved hegemonic status. An excellent work, definitely worth getting.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for those interested in the region's economies.......1999-02-28

Rarely has a specialist in Marxist crisis theory applied their skills to an African economy with the rigour of Patrick Bond. This lengthy study makes great advances in placing the economic problems of a small African country into a global context. Bond's main aim is to demonstrate how the collapse of the Zimbabwean economy in the 1990s is a product of both the specifics of the country and the forces of globalisation. In his view, the phenomena of overproduction and overaccumulation have very specific manifestations in Zimbabwe. He depicts several such manifestations, including boom and bust on the stock exchange and the rise and fall of property speculation. For Bond, however, these problems are rooted in a colonial history which created an economy based on a cheap black labour force. In his view, such an "uneven" economy could never sustain consumption levels adequate to ensure continued growth. As a result, the luxury consumer goods industries which targeted the white settler markets were bound to result in excess capacity. However, given the structure of the global economy, Zimbabwe ultimately had no outlet to solve this problem of overproduction. For Bond, this cul de sac lay behind earlier downturns in the economy but reached its most staggering proportions with the implementation of structural adjustment in the 1990s. The author holds out little hope for economic policy measures as a solution to Zimbabwe's poverty and inequality. Rather he posits the need for a transformation of the economic and political institutions of the country--based on the struggles and leadership of social movements. Unlike many Marxists, Bond does not leave everything to the inevitable advance of the "laws" of the capitalist system. Instead, he presents rich detail of the country's production and financial sector as well as linking the economic evolution of the crisis to the degeneration of the political leadership of the ruling ZANU-PF political party and the weakness of civil society forces. For anyone who is interested in the economies of the region, this is a major advance of our understanding of the linkages between southern African economic problems and the broader global economy. Although Bond's work is the result of Ph.D. research--he is no academic tourist. He has spent years in the region and displays the type of local knowledge that cannot be gained in First World libraries or via cyberspace. Despite its strengths, the volume has a few shortcomings. In one sense the richness of detail may detract from a broader interest which the book could attract. For readers who are not immediately familiar with Enos Nkala, Bernard Chidzero or Hunyani Paper, the extensive statistical and descriptive sections may be a bit too obscure to fully digest. Moreover, despite all the advances in our understanding of gender and development, Bond has not escaped the confines of the economy's commanding heights to seriously examine the gender and reproduction aspect of economic crisis. These faults aside, the volume is to be commended as a well-written, thoroughly researched and enriching study which breaks new ground in building an explanation for the failures of the 1990s. And for those with an interest in South Africa, Bond has presented a work which seriously calls into question any basis for economic overoptimism as a result of the "miracle" of the end of apartheid and the "Madiba magic" of Nelson Mandela.

5 out of 5 stars Educational and interesting.......2007-01-10

I have enjoyed reading all of his books and as a science educator, I look for easy to read books for secondary students. This book generally meets that goal. Some chapers are more readable than others for high school students. This book is also very good for teachers. It makes connections between book science and experienced science.

4 out of 5 stars The first half of the book is about nutrition and health.......2006-11-26

The first half of the book is on what I expected, nutrition and health. In the second half he rambles onto miscellaneous topics in chemistry, explosives, poisons, murders, inventors, etc. Many stories, all delightfully told. He seems to know what he is talking about.

5 out of 5 stars Learn about the chemistry behind health, food, and related issues........2006-10-14

Let Them Eat Flax: 70 All-New Commentaries on the Science of Everyday Food & Life could've been featured in our 'Food and Wine' or 'Science' section, but is reviewed here for its in-depth blend of science and history with food and health issues. From trans fats and vitamin supplements to pesticides and acupuncture, readers learn about the chemistry behind health, food, and related issues.

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!.......2006-01-12

I have got every one of the books by Dr. Schwarz, and I have to say every one of them is great. He explained the Chemistry of Food and Life in a fun way that most people can understand.

One thing I would like is, may be in the future the books can include the chemical structures of the compounds discussed, perhaps at the end of the book? I know not everyone will be interested in this, but I certainly like to know more about them. A list of structures of the compounds discussed in the previous books will also be most welcome to me.

Paper Boys is chock full of memorable - and offbeat characters.

The plot twists and turns in multiple continents, the author's gift for dialogue and black humor, make this a perfect page turner.

Let's hope the author writes the prequel and the sequel books about the friends and acquaintances of the Paper Boys.

              5 out of 5 stars comedy/adventure with a hearty bite.......2005-05-13

Smart and thoroughly enjoyable - an exciting story that you won't be able to put down. This slightly twisted (yet strangely heartwarming) piece of fiction is sure to delight even the most discerning reader. The wonderfully flawed characters are quite memorable. This books is begging for a screenplay to follow. Can't wait for Mr. Drake's next adventure.

When I was younger, I found myself reading the rough draft of this book. After I had picked it up, I couldn't put it down. My Uncle Robert has been one of the biggest inspirations in my life. I hope he continues to show the world his wonderful works of art.

The combination of surprising plot lines and a masterful command of dialogue makes "Paper Boys" a real page turner. From the mid-west to California to the east coast, Mexico and south-east Asia, Bob Drake sends his characters on a fast moving trip from their childhood friendships to their ultimate destinies. Except for a quick bite to eat, I read "Paper Boys" straight through.

              Book Description

In an account of unusual power, Luftwaffe ace Johannes Steinhoff recounts the final days of the German air force on Sicily in June and July 1943. Facing crushing odds--including a commander, Hermann G(ering, who contemptuously treated his pilots as cowards--Steinhoff and his fellow Messerschmitt 109 pilots took to the skies day after day to meet waves of dreaded Flying Fortresses and swarms of Allied fighters, all bent on driving the Germans from the island. A captivating narrative and a piercing analysis, this book is a classic of aerial combat.

5 out of 5 stars Three Weeks of Impossible Struggle........2004-11-16

In this book Johannes Steinhoff establishes himself as a thinker as well as a fighter pilot with 176 victories. The main part of the book covers just June 21st to July 13, 1943. During this time the 77th Fighter Wing took to the skies above Sicily in a valiant but futile attempt to stop the allied landings.

It's a story of a small group of men with limited equipment (and that equipment beginning to show its age) trying to stop a flood.

This is not a story of heroic Nazi's breathing fire and mouthing slogans. It's a story of rather desparate men trying to do their best in a situation they couldn't control. Just one small step on the path to ultimate defeat.

Then the Epilogue is almost worth the cost of the book itself. With many years to reflect on the happenings during the first half of 1945 Mr. Steinhoff provides just a few pages of analysis on what a modern country has to do to maintain its position in the world.

              5 out of 5 stars Paul's review.......2003-07-10

The story is great. I agree with what is in the other two reviews. But the end of the book is the best part. It gives Steinhoff's insight (25 years after the conclusion of the war) into a modern nation's needs for defense and how that defense might be constructed. This insight, following the story of the defense of Sicily, makes the book! This insight is worth your time to read.

5 out of 5 stars Air Defense Under Pressure.......2002-01-28

This book will be disappointing to anyone expecting tales of aerial victories. Instead, read about the near impossibility of fighter defense under the pressure of incessant night and day raids on German airfields, the management of experienced and inexperienced (though expert) pilots, use of alternative fields, retreat, and the unreality of orders from higher level of German air force leadership. I have reread this book several times, and strongly recommend it for its reality, not its thrills.

5 out of 5 stars A Detailed Account of the Luftwaffe at War.......1998-12-18

Steinhoff's tenure in the Luftwaffe spanned ten years, of which six years involved active combat. As Kommodore of JG-77, Steinhoff was responsible for the aerial defense of Sicily during the Allied Operation Husky. This book, written by the man who commanded German fighters, is pivotal in the historiography and critical to the understanding of just how that phase of the war developed. I highly recommend the book.

                Book Description

"Mapping Identity" traces the formation of the Coeur d'Alene Indian Reservation in northern Idaho from the introduction of the Jesuit notion of "reduction" in the 1840s to the finalization of reservation boundaries in the 1890s. Using Indian Agency records, congressional documents, Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) records, Jesuit missionary reports, and tribal accounts, historian Laura Woodworth-Ney argues that the reservation-making process for the Coeur d'Alenes reflected more than just BIA policy objectives. It was also the result of a complex interplay of Jesuit mission goals, the Schitsu'umsh chief Andrew Seltice's assimilationist policy, and political pressure from local non-Indians. Woodworth-Ney concludes that in creating the reservation, BIA officials and tribal leaders mapped boundaries not only of territory, but also of tribal identity.

"Mapping Identity" builds on the growing body of literature that presents a more complex picture of federal policy, native identity, and the creation of Indian reservations in the western United States. It will be important to readers interested in western U.S. history, legal and administrative history, Native American history, and interior Northwest history.

                  Book Description

This book examines how black children who grow up in an impoverished environment construct their social reality, and why this process is a particularly critical factor in their perception and creation of self. It argues that black disadvantaged children develop a lifestyle and adopt values based on an identity grounded in racism, inequality, violence and poverty. "Constructing Social Reality: Self Portraits of Poor Black Adolescents" makes a valuable contribution to the scholarship by investigating the phenomena of poverty from cognitive, linguistic, and experiential perspectives in the lives of disadvantaged black adolescents.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding Chicago's Design and Development.......2000-05-25

Few scholars can write with ease; and even fewer write without verbosity and pomposity. Professor Bluestone's book on Chicago's development is a source of invaluable information presented in a literary fashion. His scope is wide ranging, but not shallow in any respect. He deals with philosophy, history, personalities, the influence of men and movements upon each other in the city where 20th century architecture was born. Whether you are a scholar, an architect or just a buff, this is a book that offers information, knowledge and wisdom.
