A must have for anyone in fixed-income capital markets.......2007-07-04

I have the 2nd edition and have found it to be ridiculously comprehensive. The text is well-written and organized (I find it better than the Fabozzi texts which usually have many different people contributing, therefore naturally being less fluid and organized). This is by far one of the best fixed-income books available right now--period.

The text is pretty heavy on quant material, however, it's written from a practitioner's perspective so I've found it to be very helpful at work.

This book gives basics of fixed income securities in a very intuitive way. It first explains building blocks for fixed income securities. I have studied these topics in pricing and finance theory, and then I bought this book. I couldn't imagine a better explanation in such a clear way for fixed income securities. I suggest this book to everybody who wants to understand the fixed income securities. I think it helps anybody who is interested in quantitative modeling fixed income securities and who is interested in trading such securities.

It first gives the basic background, the relative pricing of fixed income securities and fixed cash flows. It then explains the price sensitivity and hedging. The author has given a good explanation for term structure models. The last part of the book is dedicated to some securities: repo, forward contracts, interest rate swaps, eurodollar and fed funds, fixed income options, mortgage-backed securities and note and bond futures.

Just want to mention a mistake of the book.......2007-04-01

On page 116, formula 6.1, the price formula for a bond is actually for a semiannual coupon bond, not as stated on the book, for annual coupon bond.
As a consequence, the dv01, duration and convexity formula it states are for semiannual coupon bonds as well.
I think both Tuckman and Fabozzi's books have their own pros and cons. Tuckman's book touchs more on the trading, which is interesting. Although it could be less rigorous in terms of treating the formulas. I own both books.

Amazing Fixed income textbook.......2007-03-10

After reading stochastic calculus for finance II by Shreve, another great textbook, I felt I needed another textbook more focused toward applications rather than theory. The book will probably not turn you into a fixed income guru but it will certainly give you most if not all the tools you need to become a guru. For physicists, engineers and mathematicians looking for a career in quantitative finance, this textbook is a must read. Read this book if you want a career in the fixed income market. Throughout the book, you will find useful trading cases which, in my opinion, put you right into the trading floor minus the stress of course. Dr Tuckman also provided simple and well thought exercises which help reinforce your understanding of the material.

After extensive reading on apples through history, I found this be very helpful. Well researched and nicely illustrated. Suggest also Brown9ing's The Story of the Fruit of Temptation, French's the History and Virtues of Cyder, and Juniper's Story of the Apple.
Can't go wrong.

fascinating story of a professional life.......2000-09-28

Morse is a fairly well-known mathematical physicist (that is, he was famous enough to be known outside his field), and this is his autobiography. I'm reviewing it from memory, since I read it when it first came out in the 70's, but it made an impression on me. He's literate, and comes across as very straightforward (although perhaps he just maintains this pose for the duration of the book -- I never met him), and he was involved in many fascinating areas.

In addition to his work in physics (among other things, he was the primary or sole author of a some standard graduate level textbooks), he was one of the "inventors" of operations research while working for the Navy during WWII. The story of the atomic bomb research is pretty well documented, and the story of the development of radar can be read in more than one place, but this is the only account I've seen of "the rest" of the vast amount of R&D work that was funded by the War Department during WWII.

Among the interesting anecdotes he relates, he was one of Feynmann's teachers in college, and Feynmann's father came to ask him (Morse) if his son (Richard) should go to grad school in physics. Morse was perceptive enough to assure the father that his son had what it took...

If you are interested in personalized accounts of the history 20th century science, this book is for you. It's similar in scope to Ulam's book about the atom bomb, but much better written, and the author comes across as quite human (which often doesn't happen in autobiographies of scientists).

Gruel Also Rises.......2006-08-18

This book is full of whacky, funny short stories that gently poke fun at the sleepy, small, southern, ficticious town of Gruel, South Carolina.
I enjoyed this collection because, having spent most of my life living in the deep south, I have an appreciation of the absurd and this book serves up heaping helpings of it.
Singleton's ability to create rediculous situations with a deadpan delivery makes the read quite fun.
Also the stories are rich with authentic details that ring true of the southern personality.
So put a flamingo in your front yard and read Drowning in Gruel!

a star with flaws.......2006-07-09

If that ain't a description of all of the people "Drowning in Gruel," then I don't know what is... After his foray into the Novel, George has returned to his roots...

If you're a fan, you will recognize a lot of the characters in this collection, and if you're just starting with George, this'll be a great beginning... I know I've said that every previous book has been the best so far, and I meant it!

George Singleton just keeps getting better, and proving his mastery of the short story, and the novel, with every new book!

George, we're still waiting for the book of prose...

Michael Haskew has written an excellent historical survey of the employment of snipers in warfare. Haskew's book focuses on the tactical deployment of snipers and he uses a variety of anecdotal accounts to illustrate his main points. He does not include a lot of technical information on arms and equipment, but concentrates more on the human side of the sniper's craft. The books contains a few typographical errors that do not significantly detract from the text. Overall, a readable and interesting account of snipers and their place on the battlefield
