Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great seller.......2005-10-02

Book was a little more used than described, but hey for the price it couldn't be beat. To bad my sylabus was wrong and the professor changed the edition. Anyhow, seller was excellent. Fast shipping and I would reccommend.

5 out of 5 stars My first accounting book.......2005-02-16

I used this textbook for my first accounting class and it was by far the best. Examples are all spelled out step by step and the numerous exercies and problems contribute to a higher level of understanding. Buy the workbook offered. It will save you a lot of time normally spent setting up the problem. Much better then some of the higher level books I have used.

5 out of 5 stars Fundamental Accounting Principles.......2000-12-12

This text was VERY helpful. The illustrations and examples were enough to explain the topic without havung to read the entire book.. Also the problems given at the end of each section were very good. Some were tough; however, the author starts you out with easy problems and works up to the more difficult ones. This text definitely is a good learning aid.

    Book Description

This volume covers the development of bank supervisory standards for an emerging Chinese Economic Circle (CEC) in which the People's Republic of China (PRC), Taiwan, and Hong Kong form an informal, interdependent relationship through their significant, increasing, inter-investment and inter-trade activities. The PRC, Taiwan, and Hong Kong are liberalising the regulation of their respective banking industries and are developing Shanghai, Taipei, and Hong Kong into major financial centres. To do this successfully requires the integration of prudential supervision (based on banking standards from the UK, United States, EU, and Basle Committee) into Chinese Banking Law and Practice. Bankers, banking lawyers, investors, and compliance officials will appreciate the way Development of Banking Law in the People's Republic of China and the Republic of China on Taiwan expertly brings together, in a single volume, the supervisory standards of PRC, Taiwan, and Hong Kong and offers unique, thoughtful solutions.

        Book Description

Bugs, Slugs and Other Thugs They slip through the woods under cover of darkness. They drop from the sky shamelessly in broad daylight. They tunnel furiously through the earth. Their destination: your garden. Year after year, your garden is the target of insects and gophers and birds and slugs seeking a free meal. While you may be willing to share part of the crop, damage sometimes gets out of hand; then it's time to take action. Bugs, Slugs and Other Thugs is for gardeners who've lost more than their fair share of the garden to bad-mannered insect and wildlife pests. It's a practical guide to pest controls that are safe for both the user and the environment. Author Rhonda Hart equips you with information that will help you identify the intruders and then offers a host of practical, environmentally sound solutions to your pest problems. Remedies range from the latest scientific advances to tried-and-true folk remedies that really work: *Interplanting vine crops with corn will keep raccoons away; they dislike the unsure footing. *Clippings of cat or dog hair might be enough to ward off rodents and other pests. *A mulch of eggshells, gravel, or oak leaves sends slugs packing. Consult Bugs, Slugs and Othe Thugs before surrendering antoher season's garden to insect and wildlife pests. A healthy, bountiful harvest can be yours this season.

5 out of 5 stars Bugs, slugs, and other thugs. By Rhonda Massingham Hart .......2007-10-03

I picked this book up some time ago, and I have to say it has saved me in my garden endeavors on more than one occasion. Simply, this book covers every garden pest imaginable. I have never seen a book dedicate almost five pages on how to defend your garden against gophers. She takes an organic approach to her pest control; so if your looking for a book full of poisons available this is the wrong book for you. However, I have never seen another pest control book that is primarily dedicated to all the animal and insect pests you could encounter in your garden. One of the best books I've encountered. It is easy to read, insightful, and just plain full of knowledge. This is a top notch resource. I'm surprised Amazon doesn't have it in stock. Could it be out of print. Pick it up used, you won't regret it.

                      Book Description

Fluid and flow problems in porous media have attracted the attention of industrialists, engineers and scientists from varying disciplines, such as chemical, environmental, and mechanical engineering, geothermal physics and food science. There has been a increasing interest in heat and fluid flows through porous media, making this book a timely and appropriate resource.

Each chapter is systematically detailed to be easily grasped by a research worker with basic knowledge of fluid mechanics, heat transfer and computational and experimental methods. At the same time, the readers will be informed of the most recent research literature in the field, giving it dual usage as both a post-grad text book and professional reference.

Written by the recent directors of the NATO Advanced Study Institute session on 'Emerging Technologies and Techniques in Porous Media' (June 2003), this book is a timely and essential reference for scientists and engineers within a variety of fields.

                          Book Description

Valence bond theory is one of two commonly used methods in molecular quantum mechanics; the other is molecular orbital theory. This book focuses on the first of these methods: ab initio valence bond theory. The book is split into two parts. Part I gives simple examples of two-electron calculations and the necessary theory to extend these to larger systems. Part II gives a set of case studies of related molecule sets designed to show the nature of the valence bond description of molecular structure. The book is of primary interest to researchers and students working on electronic theory and computation in chemistry and chemical physics.

                            Book Description

Satire, the use of criticism cloaked in wit, has been employed since classical times to challenge the established order of society. In colonial Spanish America during the sixteenth through the eighteenth centuries, many writers used satire to resist Spanish-imposed social and literary forms and find an authentic Latin American voice. This study explores the work of eight satirists of the colonial period and shows how their literary innovations had a formative influence on the development of the modern Latin American novel, essay, and autobiography. The writers studied here include Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, Juan del Valle y Caviedes, Cristóbal de Llerena, and Eugenio Espejo. Johnson chronicles how they used satire to challenge the "New World as Utopia" myth propagated by Spanish authorities and criticize the Catholic church for its role in fulfilling imperialistic designs. She also shows how their marginalized status as Creoles without the rights and privileges of their Spanish heritage made them effective satirists. From their writings, she asserts, emerges the first self-awareness and national consciousness of Spanish America.

                              Book Description

Sieges played a central role in many conflicts of the ancient world and generals, including Darius, Alexander the Great, Hannibal and Scipio Africanus successfully used siegecraft to gain their objectives. As siege tactics became integral to success in war, generals employed the minds of engineers and scientists to develop tactics which ranged from penetrating the defences or blockading the city through to tricks and deception. This fascinating study tracks developments in siege warfare from Ancient Persia in the 6th century BC through to the Roman sieges of the second century BC, describing the range of equipment and techniques which evolved during this period.

                                Book Description

It's 1863. Harriet Tubman is facing one of the biggest—and most dangerous— challenges of her life. She has survived her master's lash, escaped from slavery, and risked her life countless times to lead runaway slaves to freedom along the Underground Railroad. Now she has a new role—that of Union spy! The outcome of a secret night raid deep into Confederate territory depends on the accuracy of the intelligence she and other black spies have gathered. Success will mean freedom for hundreds of slaves. Failure will mean death by hanging.

You are about to enter the undercover world of African-American spies—enslaved and free—risking everything in the name of freedom. How were the Underground Railroad and slave songs used to pass secret messages? What were "contrabands" and "Black Dispatches?" What did Harriet have in common with the Secret Six and a maidservant in the home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis? You'll discover these answers and more as the action unfolds.

Thomas B. Allen, author of the award-winning George Washington, Spymaster, has sifted through military and intelligence archives, diaries, and little-known memoirs from ex-slaves to bring to light new facts about the role Harriet and other black spies played in helping the Union win the war.

This detailed account combined with powerful archival images supplemented with woodcuts by Carla Bauer, maps, a time line, footnotes, and extensive quote sources make this incredibly detailed account an excellent resource for report writing as well as an exciting true-life adventure.

This book is well written and researched. It is devided into a number of cases in which the author describes the actions and accomplishments of various Quaker educators durring the Civil War era. Noteworthy was their fustrations with Southerners who distrusted any "teachers" from the North, especially ones who sought to educate former slaves. For someone unaware but interested in the history of Quakerism in the mid 19th century, or interested in 19th century women's history, I recomend this book.

                                Book Description

This study uses an abundance of primary sources to restore African American female participants in the Civil War to history by documenting their presence, contributions and experience. Free and enslaved African American women took part in this process in a variety of ways, including black female charity and benevolence. These women were spies, soldiers, scouts, nurses, cooks, seamstresses, laundresses, recruiters, relief workers, organizers, teachers, activists and survivors. They carried the honor of the race on their shoulders, insisting on their right to be treated as "ladies" and knowing that their conduct was a direct reflection on the African American community as a whole.
For too long, black women have been rendered invisible in traditional Civil War history and marginal in African American chronicles. This book addresses this lack by reclaiming and resurrecting the role of African American females, individually and collectively, during the Civil War. It brings their contributions, in the words of a Civil War participant, Susie King Taylor, "in history before the people."

2 out of 5 stars Imagine My Suprise.......2001-07-12

At the time I purchased this book I really was excited thinking that for once someone actually published a book that specifically talked about the lives and conditions of African based American women and children during the Civil War. As Holly Near would say, "imagine my surprise" and I am not talking about pirated women on a ship. I am a researcher desperately looking for specifics and I thought this book would be crucial to my research so I purchased it.

This book has a lot of history that you should have learned in high school about the civil war in general camouflaged with information from the US Sanitary Commission you may not have been able to come across in high school.

Based upon the preface, this book was supposed to focus on a text of history about black women's experiences during the civil war. In my honest opinion it is written for general history wanna-be buffs, and unconscious civil war almost scholars who do not know about the US Colored Troops or just haven't thought much about them, or only want limited information or knowledge.

I can not stress the importance of feminist, womanist and historical researchers not being able to call African, African-based American, and Women of Color and Culture's by their actual names out in historical text and not redundantly keep printing the same old history that a lot of us already know. If this does not seem to be an issue, then ask the author why she in fact is not able to give much credence to their real names. Can someone supply a muster roll of the women and children "contrabands and refugee's" who supposingly caused a lot of undocumented racket in the camps? Forbes writes in the preface, if women are the focus, the perspective belongs to white women," of which entire book mirrors.

Recommendation: before you purchase this book, request it through the Interlibrary loan system through your public or university library and save yourself some serious money. With the money you save, give to a charitable cause.

                                    Book Description

This introductory text on partial differential equations is the first to integrate modern and classical techniques for solving PDEs at a level suitable for undergraduates. The author successfully complements the classical topic of Fourier series with modern finite element methods. The result is an up-to-date, powerful, and flexible approach to solving PDEs, which both faculty and students will find refreshing, challenging, and rewarding. Linear algebra is a key component of the text, providing a framework both for computing solutions and for understanding the theoretical basis of the methods. Although techniques are emphasized over theory, the methods are presented in a mathematically sound fashion to develop a strong foundation for further study. Numerous exercises and examples involve meaningful experiments with realistic physical parameters, allowing students to use physical intuition to understand the qualitative features of the solutions.

5 out of 5 stars A fine introduction to PDE's.......2005-11-01

This book will appeal to undergraduate math majors interested in both pure and applied math. Gockenbach covers the theoretical background at a level accessible to an undergrad student with basic engineering math (though a semester of advanced calculus and may help), and then extends into the numerical analysis approach. The book is very thorough and would be a nice text book or reference for those interested in the subject.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Good Book?.......2003-11-07

I have not read this book but my math professor wrote it and he is a very good teacher. I reccomend this book on those grounds.

4 out of 5 stars Good text but a little dense.......2003-09-13

Gockenbach guides the readers through the fundamental concepts in a rigorous and pleasing manner. However, sometimes he gets so deep into a derivation that the reader forgets the purpose of even doing it in the first place. The connection to linear algebra as a framework is very good, but you almost feel that the natural progression of material is interrupted time and again by the author's soujourns into tangential topics.
