        Book Description

While health professionals may be adequately informed about the legal aspects of many specialized areas of medicine and nursing, they may not totally understand the law applicable to cases of dying patients, or even the legal definition of death itself. In the wake of advances in medical technology, recent court decisions on the right to die, the enactment of natural death and brain death statutes, advance directives and living wills, and growing use of organ transplantation, there has been widespread concern about the legal and ethical issues surrounding these subjects. This book, written by a lawyer-thanatologist, will satisfy these needs. It is the first work to bring together case and statutory law applicable to dying patients, the right to die, advance directives, brain death, and organ transplantation, thus formulating a law of dying and death. It is also unique as a self-help law finder. Although occasions that require consultation with a lawyer will arise, this work gives health professionals practical guidance on where and how to find legal materials on these issues. This book should also prove immensely useful in summarizing the law concerning dying and death for professional legal counsel. Medical decisions and issues that once were the sole province of doctors, hospitals, patients, and families have become matters of increasing judicial and legislative attention.

            Book Description

This book deals with the agronomy of ancient Mesopotamia. It relies on the original, yet hardly known, agronomic encyclopaedia: The "Book of Nabatean Agriculture" written by Qutama (end of Antiquity). The three parts of the book analyze the origin of the Mesopotamian school of agriculture and its economic and agro-technical conceptions. The material is a considerable contribution to the history of the Mesopotamian agriculture. It also contains the knowledge which was basic to the establishment of the agronomic culture of Islam. Besides, the historians of agronomy could, thanks to this new material, relate the Mesopotamian contribution to the development of the science of agriculture.

5 out of 5 stars The cutting edge of biotech's promise.......2006-11-07

Eric Grace is a science writer with a Ph.D. in zoology: his BIOTECHNOLOGY UNZIPPED: PROMISES AND REALITIES may sound technical but is surprisingly accessible, appearing in a revised second edition to provide chapters covering health, environmental concerns, and biotech applications. The first edition, which appeared in 1997, was on the cutting edge of biotech's promise: since then much has happened, and this second edition updates details for the latest studies and issues.

3 out of 5 stars A competent and readable overview.......2003-07-05

I bought this book because I wanted a refresher on Molecular Biology. The first half of the text delivers this, explaining key concepts of DNA/RNA, the role of genes and the function of gene expression in the creation of proteins. Upon these understandings the author builds an explanation of genetic engineering. He explains techniques of recombinant DNA, the relevance of stem cells and modern gene therapy. The second half of the book was of less relevance to me, but if you need a journalist's eye view of the whole of biotech, sweeping across everything from cell biology to bioethics, Eric Grace does a reasonable job of providing it. Pro: Competently written and clearly illustrated. Con: Breadth but limited depth.

4 out of 5 stars Great intro for the layperson.......2001-01-25

After seeing so much in the news about biotechnology, I was in search of an introductory book that would explain the basics of genetic manipulation. This book starts from the very basics--how are genes related to DNA and chromosomes, what are enzymes and proteins, then more sophisticated concepts such as gene splicing and monoclonal antibodies.

While this book won't make anyone an expert scientist, the text and diagrams are clear and concise. I read articles about biotech in the newspapers and business magazines, and this book is a useful primer for those in search of further detail.

After the overall introduction, the author describes biotech applications in several fields, which become a bit of a laundary list after awhile. I would have found fewer, in-depth case studies more interesting. Nevertheless, if you're looking for an informative introduction to biotech, I highly recommend this book.

            5 out of 5 stars compelling.......2000-03-23

BIOTECHNOLOGY UNZIPPED is the most compelling evaluation of biotechnology I have read since Harsanyi & Hutton's GENETIC PROPHECY of almost 20 years ago. What makes this book so insightful is the "tradeoffs" perspective that Grace brings to the subject. In every instance where a particular technique is either in development or on the market, the possibilities for selective breeding, or genetic engineering, or composite materials, all hold both a promise and a peril.

Grace, who has a Ph.D. in Zoology and considerable experience as a science writer, attempts to provide enough critical information in each case so that the reader will get a sense of what considerations are involved in any particular "biotechnology solution". What we learn about biotechnology from him is that every biotechnology decision has the following characteristics:

            * Costs and revenues (developments cost $millions, so the goal is profits) * Winners and losers (the rich could get lucky, the poor and vulnerable may not) * Benefits and detriments (solutions generate unintended & unwanted consequences) * Enthusiasts and detractors (arguments arise on all sides of biotechnology issues)

The reason that the public is so ambivalent about biotechnology is that its supporters have been so inept at making their case. Biotechnology advocates seem to think that their's is just a problem of an "uninformed public" whom they can re- assure because they have "the facts". They obviously don't appreciate the most important principle of new-age public relations, namely, "They don't care how much you know until they know how much you care".

What Grace shows is that the public does have cause to be concerned. There are no simple problems, no silver bullets, and no final solutions, even if biotechnology boosters pretend there are. If biotechnology advocates become willing to address these concerns, AND learn to manage the expectations of their stakeholders, then they can begin to earn the respect that will otherwise continue to elude them. Grace's book helps clarify all of this. Well done!

3 out of 5 stars Not That Great Of A Book.......2000-02-13

I bought and read this book for my biotechnology class and I really did not like it very much. There are certain parts that are understandable. But much of the book was just blah, blah, blah. If you have to take a class on biotechnology, or just want to read a biotechnology book, this fits you. If you really don't want to read these kind of books, I would not recommend it.

Advances in laser technology over the last 10-15 years have stimulated study of the active control of quantum molecular dynamics. Lasers may used to generate external fields of varying intensity, phases, and spectral content, which then are used to alter the molecular dynamics of a system so as to generate more of a particular product. Control of reactions at this microscopic level is one of the hot areas of research in chemical physics. This book describes the current status of the theory of optical control of molecular dynamics

Bertie Krohn, only child of Perry Krohn -- creator of TV's longest running space opera, Starwatch: The Navigators -- recounts the story of the last months in the lives of his two friends: Thad Michelet, author, actor, and son of a literary titan; and Clea

Freemantle, emotionally fragile daughter of a legendary movie star. Scions of entertainment greatness, they call themselves the Three Musketeers. As the incestuous clique attempts to scale the peaks claimed by their sacred yet monstrous parents during the filming of a Starwatch episode, Bertie scrupulously chronicles their futile struggles against the ravenous, narcissistic, and addicted Hollywood that claims them.

                  2 out of 5 stars Very disappointing.......2007-05-21

After reading Wagner's other work, and especially after reading Carolyn See's enthusiastic review in the Washington Post, I had high hopes for this book. But The Chrysanthemum Palace was a disappointment, a thin sketch of a story with weak, unlikable characters and a Hollywood backdrop that many writers -- including Wagner himself -- have made much more vivid. At about page 140, I skipped the next 50 pages or so and read the last 15 or 20 pages, none of which made me want to return to the part I passed over.

Wagner is a talented writer and adept storyteller, so I'm rather baffled by this tepid effort. Maybe this was just one of those mistakes that writers occasionally make in selling an idea to a publisher, then finding that it really doesn't engage them or that they can't flesh it out well enough in time for a deadline. I still look forward to Wagner's future projects, but this particular book was a waste of my time and money.

                  1 out of 5 stars Gave up........2006-08-19

I stopped reading this at about page 50. I found it pretentious and full of too many Hollywood insider references. I felt like the author was screaming "I am so clever."
This is the type of book I don't enjoy. I just couldn't get in to it, so I quit.

3 out of 5 stars Tell me why Clea.......2005-09-23

does herself in? Thad -- well. The world was not worse off for such a morose beast in it, but tell me why I care about these characters?

This is Gatsby in Hollywood, or Gatsby's grandchildren, mooning after what is lost, without anything elegaic or acknowledging in the doing of it. I didn't put the book down, but I didn't come away feeling I'd done anything more than survive Bruce Wagner's ennui.

& I got enough of that on my own.

2 out of 5 stars Doesn't Come Close to Still Holding or I'll Let You Go.......2005-06-02

Still Holding and I'll Let You Go are among my favorite novels of the past 5 years. By comparison, The Crysanthemum Palace was a huge disappointment. At no point did the characters, the plot or the Hollywood environment grab me the way those other two novels did.

Children of celebrities is a potentially great subject for a novel. Unfortunately, the three major characters in this novel held very limited appeal for me. And the parallels between the science fiction TV series and what was happening in the characters' real lives just didn't work for me in the least.

For a new reader of Bruce Wagner, I'd start with the second, then third of the cellphone trilogy and leave this one alone.

4 out of 5 stars Ho Hum You Say, Yet Another Hollywood Novel.......2005-05-30

So many authors have tapped into the seemingly unquenchable thirst of audiences eager to vicariously partake in the lives of the celebrated that it is easy to become blase about yet another venture. But wait, Bruce Wagner is a talented author and he puts his own stamp on the genre. I enjoy indulging in the Hollywood novel every now and again and this novel's up to the minute take on Hollywood is entertaining.

Filled to the brim and practically overflowing with the requisite references to the famous hotels, streets, restaurants, mansions, movie stars, authors, etc., this book more than satisfied this reader's delight in reading about the familiar and famous.
Wagner cleverly intertwines the real with the fictional.

The story is told in the narrative voice of Bertie, an actor who is writing this, his very first novel. Bertie is telling the troubled tale of his own life and those of his two friends. All three are the children of the uber famous and successful. Each of them is haplessly striving to attain the approval of their dominating and oppressive parents through their own artistic ventures. Unfortunately, none of them can adequately measure up and all fall woefully short in their endeavors.

This is not a book that one can haphazardly glide through. The excessive use of unusual and esoteric vocabulary is positively heady. The narrative exposition is rather convoluted and choppy. The prose is positively gymastic in it feats. However, where perhaps 10 somersaults would have been more than adequate the writer insists on doing 20! I was certainly entertained by the clever wordplay, the
irreverent humor, the insider knowledge of Hollywood and the book world as well. There is a self conscious, look at me quality to the writing that is intended to impress and by golly it does.

I will let the writing speak for itself in this abbreviated sampling:..."his father happened to be none other than that titan of our time, the singularly profane, lavishly gifted, beguilingly protean, salaciously elegant, carnivorously charming novelist who I presume was and is still known to most readers of these pages as both giant and giant-killer Jack Michelet - Michelet of the three Pulitizers and perennial Nobel short list, Michelet of the Lannan Prize...Michelet of the eight novels, countless screenplay adaptations, and three Academy Award noms...Michelet of the outrageously trenchant, scabrous, scholarly, dashed-off feeling yet meticulously crafted op-ed pieces....Michelet the now-and-then classically outrageous, outrageously classical rethinker, rewriter, and rearranger of Chevhov, Ibsen and Moliere....Michelet the mythic lion in winter of whom biographers and journalists high and low had gleefully written did not go gentle into that good night."

Whew! Are you having fun yet or are you becoming just a tad irritated? Speaking for myself, I need to consult my dictionary!

"Fractions of a second in time.
What amazing violence can be meted out in
                          the blink of an eye."

In the mid-nineteen sixties, Harry Constance made a life-altering journey that led him out of Texas and into the jungles of Vietnam. As a young naval officer, he went from UDT training to the U.S. Navy's newly formed SEAL Team Two, and then straight into furious action. By 1970, he was already the veteran of three hundred combat missions and the recipient of thirty-two military citations, including three Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart.

Good To Go is Constance's powerful, firsthand account of his three tours of duty as a member of America's most elite, razor-sharp stealth fighting force. It is a breathtaking memoir of harrowing missions and covert special-ops -- from the floodplains of the Mekong Delta to the beaches of the South China Sea -- that places the reader in the center of bloody ambushes and devastating firefights. But his extraordinary adventure goes even farther -- beyond 'Nam -- as we accompany Constance and the SEALs on astonishing missions to some of the world's most dangerous hot-spots . . . and experience close-up the courage, dedication, and unparalleled skill that made the U.S. Navy SEALs legendary.

Includes 8 Pages of SEAL Team Action Photos!

Curtis M."Butch" Ashton was my uncle. Youngest of four bothers on my fathers side. Before joining the Navy he lived with us. It was like having an instant big bother that I idolized. I was just a small boy when he went off to Vietnam not yet really old enough to understand the dangers of war until that night in Dec. 1969 when my mother told me Butch was dead. Butch's metals and burial flag are proudly on display in my home today. I have two teenage sons of my own now and we all enjoyed reading/sharing "Good To Go".

Thank you Harry for sharing with us a part of his life with you and the Seals in Vietnam.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable, fast paced read. It is an incredible story that races through a 20 year Navy career but is able to keep it's main focus on the Vietnam tours. Very exciting and very well written. Mr. Constance deserves his medals.

1 out of 5 stars Liar or merely a poor writer?.......2007-03-06

I had high hopes for this book, having enjoyed Marcinko's various highly entertaining forays (most, after "Rogue Warrior" clearly labeled as "fiction") and "Patches" Watson's book, but I had misgivings about this from page one. Evidently, Harry's neighbor (the "as told to") was fascinated with Constance's war stories (and, really, who wouldn't be?), interviewed him and changed the tall tales to the first-person perspective. I found the technique clunky and obvious whenever the "real" writer's voice conflicted with the tales of derring-do (e.g., misidentifying the M-203 grenade launcher, calling it a ".two-oh-three, as though that was the launcher's caliber, or something, clearly shows the writer slavishly scribbling down as much of the stories as he could and doing little fact checking).

Now let's face it, anybody who had the balls to not only volunteer for membership in an elite group and who survived multiple tours in Vietnam is worthy of respect, but I actually wasn't terribly surprised to see that Constance's many accusation leveled at SEAL teammate Charlie Watson were untrue and he was forced to apologize in court (and pay nearly half a million dollars in damages). Much of the tone of the book seems to come from a sour-grapes guy with some scores to settle against former friends, colleagues and lovers. It's a shame that the obvious fraud and mean-spirited tone here taints the real-life Vietnam SEAL team heroics.

My cousin, Curtis Morris Ashton, "Butch" is what family called him or "Lil" Ashton is what the team called him, was deployed with SEAL team 7 and then 2. Although I never was able to meet him, because we lived in Arizona and his side of the family in Texas, it allowed me to get a glimpse of who he was and some of his personality. He is still remembered and missed! Neil Ashton

In Good to Go by Harry Constance and Randall Fuerst, the authors give first hand insight on the life of a military man. Good to Go follows Harry as he goes through many trials and tribulations. From a cheating wife to threats of losing all his military rank, he must try to salvage his name and save his pride.
The authors do an excellent job of making the events seem real almost as if we can feel the disappointment or disbelief. Although the book uses a lot of military slang, it is still a very easy read. I would recommend Good to Go to anyone, it's not just another war novel; it's more.

Who was rock & roll's Lizard King? No, wait, come back--it's not trivia anymore, it's history. English professor Jaime O'Neill intends to help "keep the past from unhappening," and with his wry humor and creative arrangements, he makes it a highly entertaining endeavor. We're not just having fun--we're preserving history! Sets of multiple-choice or fill-in-the-blank questions (more than 2000 of them!) with themes such as "Sex, Drugs, and Rock-n-Roll" and "Morbid Fascinations" engage and challenge us while keeping a constant stream of facts and humor flowing.

Unlike other books of its kind, We're History! isn't afraid to flaunt its opinions. Who was the "slimiest lawyer?" Roy Cohn! Who is the "greatest inspiration to nerds everywhere?" Bill Gates! For all of the giggles to be had, O'Neill may have meant this to be read by a group. As it stands, this is the perfect smarty-pants party book.

                                Book Description

The twentieth century is nearly history, and since you probably weren't born yesterday, you should at least remember a few things about the last one hundred amazing years. For old time's sake, take this short quiz to see what you remember and how much you may have forgotten:

Surprised? And those five questions are just a sample of the people, places, and things that come flooding back in We're History!, a host of cleverly designed quizzes that celebrate and test your knowledge of the twentieth century. With more than 2,000 creatively phrased and organized questions (short answer, fill-in-the blanks, true/false, "which came first?" and "spot the anachronism") and seventeen chapters covering every conceivable twentieth-century theme, innovation, and icon, We're History! will sharpen your trivia skills, dust off your memory, and, most importantly, provide you with what may be your last whirlwind ride through a truly memorable century.

Answers: Velcro came first in 1948; Ace Ventura was a pet detective; true; San Francisco is burning after a great earthquake; they were dogs, and also the first animals in space.

                                4 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2001-01-26

It was very interesting to find out what life was like just over 100 years ago-- the things we had, the things we didn't have, as compared to now. For example, it was interesting to find out that 101 years ago, we didn't have the means to make a tuna fish sandwich-- no presliced bread, no jarred mayonnaise, and no canned tuna. People made their own bread. Ditto with mayonnaise. And canned tuna? You would have had to catch it yourself, and even then, it probably didn't resemble the kind you get from Starkist or Chicken of the Sea today. And forget about finding it in cans-- lead in cans was a big problem. In this book, you also get to find out, decade by decade, what things were invented and became available to the general public. Interesting.

                                4 out of 5 stars A MUST-OWN FOR EVERY 20TH CENTURY SURVIVOR.......1999-01-15

I can't decide whether "We're History" belongs on my bookshelf next to "Only Yesterday" and "The Crucial Decade" or in the cabinet where I keep "Scrabble" and "Monopoly." As with his previous works, Mr. O'Neill has produced a thoroughly delightful volume which at once captures the author's astute observations about this century and presents a compendium of challenging and entertaining quizzes that test our memories of the people and events that have shaped our lives. The questions alone will provide hours of fun and nostalgia for get-togethers of friends, a couple looking for better entertainment than television, or an individual whiling away a rainy afternoon. O'Neill's "We're History" is a must-own for every "20th Century Survivor."

                                  Book Description

Both the National Academy of Science and the NCTM Standards recognize that successful scientific inquiry and mathematical problem solving require that students be critical and creative thinkers. Adams and Hamm believe that the best way to achieve these results is by integrating math, science, and technology in a cooperative learning environment. Their new book shows elementary teachers how.

Collaborative Inquiry in Science, Math, and Technology offers a pedagogically sound vision of elementary classrooms in which students are encouraged to work together to construct meaning without the constraints of rigid subject matter. That vision is supported throughout by numerous inquiry-based, thematic activities specifically designed to promote reflective thinking.

To make learning meaningful to children requires connecting the curriculum to questions they have about the natural world. Children learn best when they build knowledge from their own experiences. To that end, the authors have carefully chosen activities that focus on everyday phenomena and that highlight the many connections among science, math, technology, and the real world. The authors also provide guidance for fostering genuine collaboration in which students pool their thinking, giving and receiving help in a learning environment where it is safe to make mistakes.

Preservice and inservice teachers as well as teacher educators will find that Collaborative Inquiry in Science, Math, and Technology not only enhances their understanding of how children learn best, but also provides them with practical support for designing lessons that capitalize on that understanding.
