EXCELLENT FOR CONTINUOUS PROCESS IMPROVEMENTS.......2001-12-20
Get this book - It could make your career.......2001-01-09
I can't even guess at the time I could have saved had I known the techniques the author demonstrates in Just-In-Time Accounting.
This is not your usual accounting tome, based on statistics and theory. This is real stuff. Built out of scar tissue, experience and real world solutions. They are not necessarily easy solutions but lasting solutions worth the effort to implement.
The content deals with streamlining some basic areas:
Cash - How to speed up the process but still keep control. Some very interesting ideas about corporate credit cards, using your bank and lock boxes to save time and money.
Sales & Accounts Receivable - Some good ideas about redundant approvals, and minimizing paper.
Inventory - With hundreds of physical inventories under my belt I can vouch for the absolutely necessity of doing what the author recommends. This area was one of my great bugaboo's. Nothing affects the balance sheet like an inventory error. This involves bills of material, suppliers, production records, and computer system's. This is a whole world in itself but the problem(s) and solutions are concisely described here. Get your inventory under control and the rest is cake.
Accounts Payable - Good stuff that took me a long time to discover on my own.
Cost Accounting - Mostly about why you need it and how it allows you to spot P&L problems before the month ends. This is one of the critical areas to review since it is necessary for faster closes. Get the major variances identified early in the month instead of wasting time digging it up 4 or 5 weeks after the events occurred. One comment I have is the need for weekly staff meetings to review what happened last week, how will it affect this week and what is being done about it. These meeting will point out problem areas for the controller to preempt delusional variance explanations after monthend.
Payroll - Many good ideas that work. I have used the barcode system's.
The Budget - You probably know about these already but there are some time-saving techniques to minimize constant re-casting and interations.
EDI - I'm not too familiar with this.
The Quick Close - It can be done. This tells you how and I can vouch for the soundness of the concept. I actually set a corporate-wide benchmark of 1-1/2 days using these techniques. In my view that is the real payoff since it is the realization and payoff of all the other hard work. Gives you more time to do yet another iteration of the budget.
Some of the examples apply to huge corporations but most of the principles are universal. I really can't find fault in this book. It tells the controller, in the real world, how to get your system(s) sorted out. I have seen many "instant pudding" or fad of the month cause real damage if it didn't really work. There is no downside to these techniques. This is motherhood and apple pie. You can't go wrong trying

The Uncertainty of Legal Rights (Financial Sector of the American Economy)
Steven Stephens Manufacturer: Routledge ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0815337647 |
Book Description
If the outcome of a lawsuit depends solely on facts, law, and logic, a jury's decision should be predictable before it is announced. This study, however, finds evidence that the results of lawsuits are not predictable, implying that the decision process is influenced by some other undetermined factors accompanying the processing of facts, law, and logic.
While it is widely believed that lawsuit results are unpredictable, this is the first study to document the existence of financially meaningful uncertainty in litigation. It employs the event study methodology used in the econometrics of financial markets to determine whether events reveal new information, as contrasted with fully anticipated events. The markets react to filing of lawsuits in a generally negative way, but at filing time the reactions are no worse for firms that ultimately lose their suits than they are for those that eventually prevail. When court decision are announced, by contrast, there is a detectable positive reaction for winning firms and a negative reaction for losing firms
The implications for corporate finance are straightforward, as there is no evidence the expectations formed by markets are biased. Accordingly, the uncertainty inherent in lawsuits fits within existing models for decision making subject to uncertainty. There is no apparent reason why the risks inherent in litigation are systematic, so the financial impact of the risk can be eliminated by holding a diversified portfolio.
The deeper implication is for the capital budgeting decision, and indeed for the notion of designing one's activities within the framework of the law. By the time a jury verdict is announced, all the information on which it ostensibly is based has been publicly revealed in the course of the trial, and hence should be fully reflected in the prices of the litigating firms' shares. Yet the prices change when the result is announced. This suggests that the decision is not the mere processing of information, but rather contains an immeasurable or stochastic component as well.

PSI Spies

Book Description
PSI SPIES: THE BOOK THE GOVERNMENT DID NOT WANT YOU TO SEE!Jim Marrs' investigation into the secret remote viewing programs conducted by the CIA and U.S. Army is finally revealed in Psi Spies.
In the early 1990's, following the success of Crossfire and Alien Agenda, Jim Marrs set out to expose yet another government coverup. Originally titled "The Enigma Files," Marrs' new book detailed the activities of the U.S Army and CIA in training soldiers and spies in the use of psychic abilities. The publisher received advance orders for The Enigma Files from around the world. Meanwhile, the U.S. government agencies publicly issued denials that such programs ever existed. As the release date neared, Marrs' editor mysteriously disappeared, apparently relocated to somewhere outside of the United States. What followed was an attempt by his new editor to coerce Jim to rewrite the book in a FICTIONAL setting, a request that Marrs flatly refused to honor. This ended the publishing deal, thus delaying the book's publishing indefinitely. That is, until now! Retitled "Psi Spies", the details of the government's espionage efforts using psychic warriors.
Interestingly, the CIA ultimately admitted to funding psychic research later in Congressional hearings, although they downplayed the importance of the program. Uhh, right.

Not As Meaty As Marrs Other Work, But ..........2002-11-28
He has dealt with the assassination of John F. Kennedy. He has explored the behind-the-scenes histories and tinkerings of secret societies in their collective bid to control the fate of the planet. He has even given one fine comprehensive examination to the entire UFO phenomenon that will probably go unmatched in the history of UFO books.
In PSI SPIES, he deals with exposing the United States government's covert use of psychic powers (largely remote viewing) in the exploration of handling foreign affairs. While it's not a truly great book (I thought it lacked some of the depth of his other tomes, and that's largely due to the scraps of true facts and research available on the subject), it is still one fine piece of investigative journalism.
It's an important read if for no other reason for the reader to understand -- through the eyes of one of the book's principals -- to what extend a government is willing to reach ... and then attempt everything possible to cover it up in the end.
Incidentally, the book probably would've been far more in depth had the US Government not gone to attempting to keep it unpublished. Marrs has a way of tilting the scales in the direction of truth, so much so that he disturbs those secretly in power, and his books do rattle you to the bones in several places.
A must-read for conspiracy fans. A must-read for fans of the occult, in fact. And, a must-read for any person seriously interested in knowing the tentacles which clandestine operations try to grasp control of our very lives.

Book Description
PSI Spies will take you behind the scenes of the U.S. Armyâs formerly top-secret remote viewing unit to discover how the military has used this psychic ability as a tool, and a weapon. Despite the fact that remote viewing was developed by various tax-supported government agencies, including the CIA, the Defense Intelligence Agency, and even the U.S. Army, a majority of Americans still have never heard of this faculty. In the 1970s, with the support of Congress, the Army formed a small unit of remote viewers to spy for America. These soldiers/psychic spies gained penetrating knowledge about a wide variety of subjects. They were consulted to stop a Soviet plot to kill President Ronald Reagan. They mentally prowled the halls of the Kremlin. They probed Iraqâs hidden weapons sites in preparation for the 1991 Gulf War. From insights into our future to the continuing mysteries of UFOs and crop circles, no subject has been immune to the military remote viewersâAmericaâs Psi Spies.Customer Reviews:
