5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT FOR CONTINUOUS PROCESS IMPROVEMENTS.......2001-12-20

This book is the best in the market so far for accounting process improvements. The author did a great job in outlining the traditional and revised accounting procedures. Lots of opportunities available to streamline the work process and enhance the information flow. There are lots of useful flowcharts and tables that you can apply to your company right away.

5 out of 5 stars Get this book - It could make your career.......2001-01-09

I wish this book existed during the turbulent 80's and early 90's. Outmoded accounting system's, corporate reorganizations, high employee turnover, pressure to do more, faster with fewer resources. As a Controller, most of my biggest headaches involved the amount of time required to close the books. The original closing schedule was 10 days into the new period. Then it was 8 days. Then 5, then 4 days.

I can't even guess at the time I could have saved had I known the techniques the author demonstrates in Just-In-Time Accounting.

This is not your usual accounting tome, based on statistics and theory. This is real stuff. Built out of scar tissue, experience and real world solutions. They are not necessarily easy solutions but lasting solutions worth the effort to implement.

The content deals with streamlining some basic areas:

Cash - How to speed up the process but still keep control. Some very interesting ideas about corporate credit cards, using your bank and lock boxes to save time and money.

Sales & Accounts Receivable - Some good ideas about redundant approvals, and minimizing paper.

Inventory - With hundreds of physical inventories under my belt I can vouch for the absolutely necessity of doing what the author recommends. This area was one of my great bugaboo's. Nothing affects the balance sheet like an inventory error. This involves bills of material, suppliers, production records, and computer system's. This is a whole world in itself but the problem(s) and solutions are concisely described here. Get your inventory under control and the rest is cake.

Accounts Payable - Good stuff that took me a long time to discover on my own.

Cost Accounting - Mostly about why you need it and how it allows you to spot P&L problems before the month ends. This is one of the critical areas to review since it is necessary for faster closes. Get the major variances identified early in the month instead of wasting time digging it up 4 or 5 weeks after the events occurred. One comment I have is the need for weekly staff meetings to review what happened last week, how will it affect this week and what is being done about it. These meeting will point out problem areas for the controller to preempt delusional variance explanations after monthend.

Payroll - Many good ideas that work. I have used the barcode system's.

The Budget - You probably know about these already but there are some time-saving techniques to minimize constant re-casting and interations.

EDI - I'm not too familiar with this.

The Quick Close - It can be done. This tells you how and I can vouch for the soundness of the concept. I actually set a corporate-wide benchmark of 1-1/2 days using these techniques. In my view that is the real payoff since it is the realization and payoff of all the other hard work. Gives you more time to do yet another iteration of the budget.

Some of the examples apply to huge corporations but most of the principles are universal. I really can't find fault in this book. It tells the controller, in the real world, how to get your system(s) sorted out. I have seen many "instant pudding" or fad of the month cause real damage if it didn't really work. There is no downside to these techniques. This is motherhood and apple pie. You can't go wrong trying

      Book Description

As the former Eastern Bloc countries and the developing nations endeavor to modernize their economies, much macroeconomic research in the next decade will involve stabilization and reconstruction. These informative, fact-filled studies describe how measures to control inflation have been implemented in Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Israel, Mexico, Turkey, and Yugoslavia.

In discussing which of these measures have succeeded and which ones have failed, the authors go beyond the normative approach taken in most studies of stabilization to focus on political incentives and constraints on actual policymaking. The up-to-date data they provide make this a valuable collective exploration of contemporary efforts at stabilization and structural adjustment.

In the 1980s each of the countries considered suffered from crippling inflation brought on by externally generated economic shocks and by mounting debt. Various strategies to control inflation and to achieve economic stabilization have met with different levels of success. The strategies tried in Brazil and Argentina worked only temporarily; the current policies of Israel, Mexico, and Bolivia have succeeded, although these countries' transitions to sustainable growth are not yet certain.

          Book Description

If the outcome of a lawsuit depends solely on facts, law, and logic, a jury's decision should be predictable before it is announced. This study, however, finds evidence that the results of lawsuits are not predictable, implying that the decision process is influenced by some other undetermined factors accompanying the processing of facts, law, and logic.
While it is widely believed that lawsuit results are unpredictable, this is the first study to document the existence of financially meaningful uncertainty in litigation. It employs the event study methodology used in the econometrics of financial markets to determine whether events reveal new information, as contrasted with fully anticipated events. The markets react to filing of lawsuits in a generally negative way, but at filing time the reactions are no worse for firms that ultimately lose their suits than they are for those that eventually prevail. When court decision are announced, by contrast, there is a detectable positive reaction for winning firms and a negative reaction for losing firms
The implications for corporate finance are straightforward, as there is no evidence the expectations formed by markets are biased. Accordingly, the uncertainty inherent in lawsuits fits within existing models for decision making subject to uncertainty. There is no apparent reason why the risks inherent in litigation are systematic, so the financial impact of the risk can be eliminated by holding a diversified portfolio.
The deeper implication is for the capital budgeting decision, and indeed for the notion of designing one's activities within the framework of the law. By the time a jury verdict is announced, all the information on which it ostensibly is based has been publicly revealed in the course of the trial, and hence should be fully reflected in the prices of the litigating firms' shares. Yet the prices change when the result is announced. This suggests that the decision is not the mere processing of information, but rather contains an immeasurable or stochastic component as well.

Along with a nomadic sect of handicapped adults and a lemon-scented train engineer, Daniel Furdman and Barbara Kauff have established a traveling lecture series, where plasma donation is encouraged and Thomas Jefferson is divine. The couple pushes forward a simple approach to living, recommending the Seven Precepts as a healthy alternative to the modern world. With the addition of a locomotive engine, a kidnapping scheme, and a used Honda, Elevator Shoes is a suggestive blend of sarcasm and narrative discourse.

                    Book Description

PSI SPIES: THE BOOK THE GOVERNMENT DID NOT WANT YOU TO SEE!

Jim Marrs' investigation into the secret remote viewing programs conducted by the CIA and U.S. Army is finally revealed in Psi Spies.

In the early 1990's, following the success of Crossfire and Alien Agenda, Jim Marrs set out to expose yet another government coverup. Originally titled "The Enigma Files," Marrs' new book detailed the activities of the U.S Army and CIA in training soldiers and spies in the use of psychic abilities. The publisher received advance orders for The Enigma Files from around the world. Meanwhile, the U.S. government agencies publicly issued denials that such programs ever existed. As the release date neared, Marrs' editor mysteriously disappeared, apparently relocated to somewhere outside of the United States. What followed was an attempt by his new editor to coerce Jim to rewrite the book in a FICTIONAL setting, a request that Marrs flatly refused to honor. This ended the publishing deal, thus delaying the book's publishing indefinitely. That is, until now! Retitled "Psi Spies", the details of the government's espionage efforts using psychic warriors.

Interestingly, the CIA ultimately admitted to funding psychic research later in Congressional hearings, although they downplayed the importance of the program. Uhh, right.

                    2 out of 5 stars interesting synopsis.......2007-02-28

I have this book and Jim Mars is a very interesting speaker, but the book left out a lot and timelines were way off. It seems only to be from the viewpoint of Ingo Swann, no real information about the military remote viewing programs.

                    5 out of 5 stars very informative.......2007-01-13

I am still not finished with the book. So far, what I have read confirmed other books I read on the subject and more. I really enjoy his style.

                    2 out of 5 stars I'm a Marrs Fan.....But not on this one........2006-08-12

This is an interesting topic but I just didn't think it hit the mark. Marrs has always delivered with his books such as: Crossfire, Alien Agenda, and Rule by Secrecy. However, I found it difficult to stay interested. In any case, if the topic interests you maybe this book is for you but I think his best work was already done.

4 out of 5 stars A good book, but not GREAT........2005-02-17

Jim Marrs is a great author. I was expecting more from this book than what it delivered. It was interesting, but not as detailed as I would of liked it to be. It was easy and fun to read. But it left me hungry for more. I wish that he would of enclosed more specific stories of some the Remote Viewing sessions than he did, rather than do on about how the politics of the government eventually destroyed the organization. But it is a great first book on Remote Viewing, and it is also a great additional book to a Remote Viewing collection. But if you want some adventure and stories about the actual Experiences I would recommend a different book. Like "Time Trek".

4 out of 5 stars Not As Meaty As Marrs Other Work, But ..........2002-11-28

Jim Marrs is a cottage industry when it comes to conspiracy writings.

He has dealt with the assassination of John F. Kennedy. He has explored the behind-the-scenes histories and tinkerings of secret societies in their collective bid to control the fate of the planet. He has even given one fine comprehensive examination to the entire UFO phenomenon that will probably go unmatched in the history of UFO books.

In PSI SPIES, he deals with exposing the United States government's covert use of psychic powers (largely remote viewing) in the exploration of handling foreign affairs. While it's not a truly great book (I thought it lacked some of the depth of his other tomes, and that's largely due to the scraps of true facts and research available on the subject), it is still one fine piece of investigative journalism.

It's an important read if for no other reason for the reader to understand -- through the eyes of one of the book's principals -- to what extend a government is willing to reach ... and then attempt everything possible to cover it up in the end.

Incidentally, the book probably would've been far more in depth had the US Government not gone to attempting to keep it unpublished. Marrs has a way of tilting the scales in the direction of truth, so much so that he disturbs those secretly in power, and his books do rattle you to the bones in several places.

A must-read for conspiracy fans. A must-read for fans of the occult, in fact. And, a must-read for any person seriously interested in knowing the tentacles which clandestine operations try to grasp control of our very lives.

                        Book Description

PSI Spies will take you behind the scenes of the U.S. Army’s formerly top-secret remote viewing unit to discover how the military has used this psychic ability as a tool, and a weapon. Despite the fact that remote viewing was developed by various tax-supported government agencies, including the CIA, the Defense Intelligence Agency, and even the U.S. Army, a majority of Americans still have never heard of this faculty. In the 1970s, with the support of Congress, the Army formed a small unit of remote viewers to spy for America. These soldiers/psychic spies gained penetrating knowledge about a wide variety of subjects. They were consulted to stop a Soviet plot to kill President Ronald Reagan. They mentally prowled the halls of the Kremlin. They probed Iraq’s hidden weapons sites in preparation for the 1991 Gulf War. From insights into our future to the continuing mysteries of UFOs and crop circles, no subject has been immune to the military remote viewers—America’s Psi Spies.

I have read several of Jims books and they are always controvercial, but objective. I excpected his "PSI spies" to be just that - and it was.

This book is not a brick, but it's still filled with sourced information. The subject (remote viewing) seems to be difficult to get to the bottom of, but Marrs have gone out of his way to do just that.

I think Jim Marrs have taken "investigative journalism" to the next level - and beyond - with this book. Most impressive are the facts that he reports on others doing RV sessions with him present and that he even joins in and experiments.

The books subjects are neatly tied thogether with great writing for easy consumption in a typical Jim Marrs style.

However giving the book a one star review based on the fact that you had a bad experience with Amazon is unacceptable. Your poor rating hurts the author much more then it hurts Amazon. Many a casual browser will not even browse further past a one star rating. And despite your experience many a writer makes a great deal of money from sales on this site.

It was the poorest internet experience I have ever had, and I had heard such amazing things about this company. Live and learn I suppose.

Every year, the multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical industry produces new medicines that treat everything from arthritis to AIDS, from high cholesterol to depression. But, despite recent controversies regarding the safety of drugs, consumers know little about the medications that they ingest and inject. How are these new medicines invented? How do consumers know that drugs are safe and effective? How are they tested? Who regulates their production - and who watches the regulators? How do drug companies produce the vast quantities needed for the marketplace, and why do they market their drugs as they do? The New Medicines leads the reader through the maze of the modern drug industry - from bench to bedside - and provides consumers with a step-by-step understanding of how new medicines are created, approved, marketed, and sold. In addition to explaining how drugs reach the medicine cabinet, the author - an experienced researcher and teacher - provides the scientific and business background for understanding the current controversial issues surrounding new medicines, such as: A balanced work that provides readers with an unbiased look at the drug industry, The New Medicines will answer the questions of anyone who has ever looked at a bottle of their prescription pills and wondered, "how did that get here?"

Every year the pharmaceutical industry produces new medicines - but are they safe? One of the best ways a consumer can find out more about how such new drugs are tested and presented is by reading THE NEW MEDICINES: HOW DRUGS ARE CREATED, APPROVED, MARKETED AND SOLD, by biomedical researcher and teacher Bernice Schacter. Chapters provide historical and business background around major new drugs which have been controversial news topics, analyze the FDA's processes, and survey new marketing techniques aimed at consumers rather than physicians. From product launches to unknown factors in drug interactions, THE NEW MEDICINES provides an excellent historical overview.

                                Description:
Understanding the relative ability of favoured fuelwood species to resprout following harvesting is integral to designing strategies for sustainable woodland resource utilisation. Harvester preference for particular woody plant species and plant size was examined in a formerly protected area, severely harvested over a short period of time. The resprouting response of harvested plants was measured five months after harvesting, towards the end of the wet season. Although a large proportion of stems of the dominant species (Terminalia sericea and Dichrostachys cinerea) had been harvested, certain less common species were particularly targeted (e.g., Pterocarpus rotundifolius and Peltophorum africanum). Harvested plants were mostly larger than 4cm in stem diameter. Almost all harvested plants of all species resprouted. Species differed in whether resprout growth was channelled into many small resprout shoots or fewer large shoots. The species most highly favoured by harvesters produced relatively large resprout shoots. Plant stem diameter was the most important determinant of resprout output, with both shoot number and their composite diameter increasing with increasing plant size. Cut height, although having no significant effect on resprout output, influenced the location of resprouting, with taller stumps having a higher proportion of resprout shoots originating from the stem than from the root crown. For all species, approximately a third of the resprout shoots of harvested plants died during the five months following harvesting. Shoots originating from the stem had a higher dieback than those growing from the root crown. Resprout biomass production over the five month period was considerable, amounting to 989kgha^-^1 (wet mass). An abundance of seedlings of the most common species may be a consequence of woodland thinning through harvesting.

                                  Description:
In parts of England areas of woodland previously coppiced are being brought back into active coppice management at a time when deer populations are increasing, and after decades with an absence of management. This paper examines the effects of overstorey canopy cover, coppice restoration, and deer browsing on the growth, and structure of the coppice and other understorey vegetation. At 11 coppice woodlands in lowland England, coppice compartments were categorised based on their coppicing history (restored versus continuous), low and high overstorey canopy cover, and low and high deer browsing levels. Gross vegetation structure in the years following harvesting was also examined. Deer browsing was assessed from signs of structural browsing damage and presence of deer. Deer browsing and overstorey cover reduced the density of the understorey. There was also a weak effect of coppice history with restored coppice exhibiting less vigorous vegetation than continuous coppice. Deer browsing damage was more pronounced in compartments with a low overstorey canopy cover, possibly due to the more luxuriant understorey coppice re-growth. Browsing damage is consistent with that expected at low to moderate levels of potential browsing intensity. Future restoration of coppice and growth of stools after coppicing is likely to be successful and worthwhile only if active measures are taken to reduce deer browsing damage and possibly deer populations as a whole.
