Book Description

'Managing Technology in The Operations Function' looks at issues in technology from the operations function rather than from an IT perspective. It explores the use of technology for processing, provision of client services, risk management and business management. The authors analyse the benefits of straight through processing and the practical implications of managing technology products in operations. System risk and opportunities are explored and case studies are examined along with industry trends to assess upcoming developments and their impacts.

The use of technology is one of the key drivers of growth in the volumes of business in the financial markets today. The impact that technology has had, and is still having in the operations function is truly substantial. Technology now reaches into just about every aspect of the business. Electronic trading, messaging systems, and information distribution have created a global market that is, relatively speaking, instantly accessible and available.

For operations this manifests itself in two ways: the automation of processes and the automation of information gathering and distribution. For operations managers this period of change has elevated the function from a pure support service into a dynamic revenue protector/generator, with a heavy client service and risk management focus.
The reliance on technology to drive this progression forward and to meet the challenge is therefore of crucial consideration for the operations manager.

The challenge for the operations teams and managers is to embrace technology and maximize the use of this vital and powerful tool within the business. A failure to do so will inevitably have a negative impact on the operations function and ultimately damage the whole business.

The definitive series of professional references for those finance professionals concerned with "Back office" or operations management unique to this industry.

Presents concise references on the essential management functions such as technology, client services, and risk management for financial operations management professionals.A comprehensive resource from a leading financial management consultant for global banks and institutions. DMS has also developed a wide range of financial management courses, materials and programs over the last seven years.

1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2005-11-28

A deeply disappointing book that is for the most part worthless. The core text is less than 200 pages of fairly large print, padded out with a glossary that defines such terms as "derivative", "equity" and "exchange". Except for the first chapter the book is an introduction to software and product management with little or no mention of its applications to financial operations. There is no mention of ATSs, ECNs, automated trading, let alone direct market access or algorithmic trading. Even basic topics such as straight-through processing are only talked about in the most cursory of fashion. I could not recommend this book to anyone.

    Book Description

The fourth volume of this Yearbook provides essays, articles, comments and analyses of developments throughout the previous year. The new essay section of this volume is contributed by Shangquan Gao, Senior Professor in the State Council of PRC who examines the negative influence of the Asian financial crisis on China.

Professor Eva Holz, Deputy Governor at Uruguayan Central Bank, Dr Michael Gruson, Senior Banking Partner at Shearman & Sterling, and Professor Geoffrey Wood of City University are some of the contributors of major articles in the edition. One of the salient features of the volume is that it focuses on new developments in post-financial crisis restructuring measures taken by various countries, such as PRC, Brazil and Japan. Complementary to this issue, globalisation, international financial stability, and international capital flows are also discussed comprehensively. The period covered by the volume has witnessed major financial and economic law reform projects in various areas of the world. The volume offers comprehensive analysis of these reforms including the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act of 1999 in the US and its influence on the global financial sector, progress in collateral law reform in Central and Eastern Europe, the development of securities law and the Internet in the UK, commercialisation of China's land use right, reform of Hong Kong property tax system, and legal changes in Japanese asset securitisation and investment.

Some issues are re-explored in this volume from new and different perspectives. The discussion of the integration of insurance and other financial services in Taiwan, of the Lender of Last Resort, of the solutions to the non-performing loan problems in China, of capital adequacy under the Basle new capital adequacy framework, and sovereign debt restructuring in Latin America will offer the readers new insights into these issues.

This volume will appeal to anyone with an interest in international financial and economic law throughout the world. Its broad geographic scope and the expertise of the contributors offer an indispensable chance for the readers to keep abreast with developments in a rapidly changing area of the law.

      Book Description

Recent transatlantic relations have been plagued by a seemingly endless series of disputes over trade and other economic and political interests. Some of these disputes have been amongst the most prominent of the WTO era: the Bananas Case, the Beef Hormones Case and over the application of the
Helms-Burton Act. This book analyzes the source of transatlantic disputes, the means employed to prevent and settle such disputes both bilaterally and through the dispute settlement mechanism of the of the WTO, and to identify promising areas for reform.

4 out of 5 stars Not quite comprehensive.......2006-08-04

For the topics this book covers, it does so well. This includes MS, IR, titrations, etc... However, as one being trained as an analytical chemist (specifically mass spectrometrist), I feel compelled to note the complete absence of NMR material in the text. I consider NMR one of the most powerful analytical tools at a chemist's disposal. Hence, this text is good for those being introduced to analytical chem, but not for those looking for further study.

5 out of 5 stars Great Analytical Chem book/Chem ref.......2006-03-02

This book was a required text for my analytical chemistry class. I was at first a bit worried about it, I tend to be picky about chemistry textbooks, but I quickly fell in love with this one. The chapters are short and to the point (most between 20 and 30 pages). Harris tells you what you need to know and gives some good examples in those 20 pages. Other books I have had to use took in excess of 50 pages to describe what Harris does (much better at that) in under 30. This is a nice feature for the time pressured college student.

The formating is also really nice. At the end of each chapter, all of the equations discussed are printed with text telling what each variable is. This is nice for when working on problem sets as you don't have to flip throughout the chapter trying to find one relationship and then search for an hour finding out what each variable means (We all forget at least once). It also makes studying for the exams easier and proofing notes to make sure you have the right equations has never been easier.

The book is directed at either a chem or non-chemistry student. At most schools analytical is low enough to get non-chemistry or even science majors in it. This book walks this line rather well. It doesn't bore the students that are "really excited" about chemistry and it doesn't confuse the "normal" kids. It is easy to read and also, like mentioned before, has little jokes in it.

A few other minor things I liked were the sections on statstical analysis and the paper on which it was printed. I took a stats 100 level class while in highschool and I knew most of the stuff still. However, some parts I forgot and had to relearn. I had to do it for bio and for chem, the bio book and prof made it so boring and drawn out. Harris, on the other hand, jumps into it and makes math and stat analysis, almost, fun. The most minor of my comments is about the paper the book is printed on. A lot of textbooks are printed on overly gloss paper and filled with "look at this picture" images. Harris has color plates, but the majority of the book is composed of greens and blacks. The paper isn't glossy and light doesn't glare on it. This just makes the sitting down and reading part much easier on the eyes.

I would recommand this text for someone wanting to brush up on analytical chemistry, or even just general chemistry. I, as well as most of my peers, intend to keep it as a reference book because it is so well formated and written. In that way, it is almost hard to outgrow.

4 out of 5 stars What do you expect?.......2005-10-01

This is an analytical chemistry textbook, not exactly the most thrilling of chemical disciplines. (unless you are an analytical chemist). It explains things fairly well, and the problems are at the end of the chapters are pretty similar to what you would find on the ACS test for analytical chemistry. The author has a sense of humor and randomly inserts jokes in some of the material. I believe this is the most popular of textbooks for analytical/quantitative chemistry courses.

4 out of 5 stars Correct book; wrong format.......2005-09-29

The book is the right one I needed for class. There is, however, an issue with the book's description on the website - it is listed as hardcover, when in fact it is paperback.

3 out of 5 stars kinda confusing, okay overall.......2004-05-14

i read this book for a chemistry class, and although it was usually fairly clear, which helped a lot, at times the author broke into the first person and started making jokes in the text, which really bugged me. additionally, the examples of problems in the text were usually much easier than the problems at the end of the chapters, so since i couldn't look in the text for help, i was often stumped.
additionally, the text sometimes asked the reader questions like "why does this happen," without providing the answer anywhere. if you didn't know the answer, you obviously weren't gonna learn it, and as a busy college student, i wasn't gonna spend fifteen minutes looking up the answer to these minor questions that should have just been answered in sentence form, as this is a textbook, after all, not a test. my teacher provided those, and thats why i need the text book.
all in all, the book was usually clear, which i liked, but it had some structural faults i didn't.

                  Book Description

This work explores the application of harmonic oscillator states in problems of atomic, molecular, nuclear and elementary particle physics. The early chapters offer a comprehensive discussion of problems involving from one to four particles and the n-particle problem in the Hartree-Fock approximation, with extensive use of the transformation brackets for harmonic oscillator coefficients and related concepts. The application of harmonic oscillator states to scattering problems is also discussed, as is the group theory underlying the harmonic oscillator and its application to the Coulomb problem, collective motions in nuclei, and relativistic many body problems with oscillator interactions. Written by two internationally-recognized experts in the field, this book will serve as an essential resource for the serious graduate student as well as the professional physicist or mathematician.

4 out of 5 stars Many diverse applications.......2004-06-07

The harmonic oscillator is one of the classic problems that recurs in physics. Partly because the underlying differential equation is one of the simplest non-trivial equations possible. But, and related to this, because it is a problem that can be solved exactly.

What the authors have done is gather under one cover a panoply of harmonic oscillator applications in modern physics. Something that is otherwise scattered through various monographs and journal papers. This in itself has merit to those of you who might have wondered how extensively the idea is applied in various branches of physics.

                      Product Description

For the first time, the King of Portugal's 1438 treatise, LIVRO DA ENSINANǁ DE BEM CAVALGAR TODA SELA, will be available in English. Never before translated even into modern Portuguese, Antonio Franco Preto has delivered a superb rendition of this most important treatise. The ROYAL BOOK OF HORSEMANSHIP, JOUSTING & KNIGHTLY COMBAT is a chivalric treatise written by a renowned medieval king who was an expert in his subject matter. Superbly educated, the king wrote about fundamentals of medieval horsemanship--including specifics about clothing, shoes, saddles and tack--about the seat and riding securely in the saddle, details about the medieval hunt, about how to joust, including roles for the knight's assistants and squires, about different kinds of lances, about wrestling and fighting with the sword. More than this, the work is a chivalric treatise on the par with Geoffrey de Charny's Book of Chivalry or Ramon Lull's Book of Knighthood & Chivalry. Its minute examination of the human spirit, in all its glory and failings, is woven with consummate skill into the text. D. Duarte discusses the moment of impact, for example, lance against lance, and about different ways that men fail at the point of impact. This failure is then discussed in the context of life. This work is a prize of medieval literature and Portuguese history that has languished in obscurity owing to its difficulty. But Dom Duarte was considered to be one of the great kings of Portugal, and his work, dedicated to his wife, left Portugal with her as she departed for Naples with the king's death. When the French overran Naples in 1495, the book was transferred to the French National Library, which it remains today. Although several old editions have appeared in Portugal, they were in the original language and were extremely difficult. Antonio Franco Preto has now rendered this text not only accessible, but preserved its elegance as well. It will be an important book to many: students of chivalric literature, the equestrian arts, jousting, Western martial arts, or Portuguese history.

4 out of 5 stars Teaching to ride well in every type of saddle.......2006-03-02

This book was written by the King Dom Duarte of Portugal in the early 15th century; a text that has long been overlooked by horse masters and scholars alike over the centuries. Usually when Duarte's work is mentioned, it is in brief and only covers a singular topic. Due to these limited translated excerpts, there is a common misconception in the community of interest that this book is just about jousting. I assure you, it is not.

Basically "Bem Cavalgar", a short hand term for the work, is a 15th century book of advice on or teaching how to ride in every type of saddle. Duarte speaks from his own experience about having a firm seat and to be well mounted when performing tasks from jousting to hunting and every day riding. He also covers the use of proper equipment for the specific task. Many modern equestrians may see bits of advice that come remarkably close to what they've been taught from their earliest riding lessons.

Duarte, like many rulers of his age, was philosophical, being well versed in mythology of the past and the religion of the day. Duarte covers many of these aspects in his own musing about "The Will" and why sometimes riders fail or succeed because of the types of will and desire employed in riding or other activities.

Amusingly enough, Duarte was very concerned about appearance and looking good while you were in the saddle. If one had an especially difficult horse, he explains how the rider could "disguise" the difficulty by straightening a hat or bit of clothing until the horse was under control so as not to appear unsafe or concerned about falling; style and elegance.

The book contains Duarte's advice and thoughts on weapon handling. His advice is sound regarding work from the ground before trying it from horseback. His belief that if you didn't feel safe and confident working with a weapon on the ground, you wouldn't be safe or confident with it on horseback. This follows the teachings of some of Duarte's contemporaries like Fiore di Liberi (Italian), whose system approaches the basics (wrestling and weapons) from the ground and eventually teaches the student to use the combat techniques from horseback a skill that Duarte laments later in his text that the young noblemen seem to be losing due to their pursuit of the ladies and courtly romance.

Martial techniques that are discussed in whole or briefly: work with the lance, the sword, and wrestling. Probably not as detailed as most students of historical western martial arts would like, but those experienced in equestrian martial sport will probably realize that much of it is common sense and practices that many of us have been doing for years.

In comparison to other works on the horsemanship of antiquity, Duarte is at times sketchy about details and without images for guidance; the reader is left to draw their own conclusions in regard to visualizing how certain movements are performed.

About the translation, I've been studying the work by Joseph Piel for years and know what a difficult and monumental task "Bem Cavalgar" was to translate. Mr. Preto has done a commendable job in bringing this difficult work to English, in full, for the first time. He has also added a bit of information to the beginning of the book to share a chronicler's description of Duarte and share the history of Portugal with the reader to add a bit of context to Duarte's work. (Obrigado)

While I have the highest regard for the content of the book and the effort it took to bring it to the masses, as a bibliophile and a design professional, I must now share my concerns regarding the presentation of this work.

In comparison to other works on horsemanship that offer a modern translation, I found the work to be missing two key components, a facsimile of the original manuscript or a text version of same and/or contemporary artwork to add visual breaks for the eye. While this may not seem to be an issue with most readers, for a scholar, it doesn't allow for comparison of the translation with the work. Sometimes errors occur and without a source to for comparison, you will never know.

When I was finally able to hold the book in my hands, my first impression was the disappointment I felt with the low quality of the binding and the flimsy paper stock. The faux leather had air bubbles under it where the glue didn't adhere or didn't cover the boards. The gold leaf text was practically illegible (same for the dust jacket). The whole thing would probably have been better served by a cloth cover and a regular serif font for readability rather than trying to mimic a manuscript.

A major issue was that before I had even finished my first reading, the binding had come unglued and the end papers had begun to separate from the cover. I have purchased several books over the years in the same price range and have never had this happen. The watch phrase is "handle with care" when reading to avoid damage to the book.

Advice to the publisher: Quality Control.

Having said that, I am pleased to see the work finally come to light as the information is more important than the binding. So, if you are a medieval horsemanship enthusiast or interested in the knightly arts even if you don't have a horse, I definitely recommend that this book be a part of your equestrian and medieval studies library.

                      4 out of 5 stars Important work.......2006-03-02

This is a very valuable and important work for anyone interested in historical horsemanship; especialy jousting. It is a great pitty that this book is so poorly produced (esp for the money!) & the binding is particularly bad (otherwise this is a 5 star book). Those who want it will still buy it however as it is the only English translation published that I know of.

                        Book Description

Throughout history, the Jewish people and their religious traditions have been viewed in different ways by their contemporaries. Reactions from their non-Jewish neighbors expose a broad spectrum of emotions: honest respect, genuine acceptance, begrudging tolerance, subtle dislike, and vicious hatred. In What Did They Think of the Jews? Allan Gould has gathered over two hundred documents, written by well-known men and women from ancient times through today, that reflect the writers' personal views of the Jewish people and their societies' general attitudes and beliefs.

5 out of 5 stars A very well put together and interesting anthology .......2006-10-30

This is an outstanding anthology. Gould tried to search out the real opinions of people and not simply what they might say in certain formal settings. One of his interesting observations is that there are many people who have mixed feelings toward Jews, who can be critical in one way and very favorable in others. I of course especially enjoyed reading some of the most favorable things said, by Tolstoy, Mark Twain, George Eliot, and those wonderful non- Jews who had real understanding and love for the Jewish people.

                        Book Description

There is a missing link in human evolution about which few facts are known and surprisingly little has been written. It is not any one of the intermediate forms connecting modern man to his apelike ancestors. It is something much more challenging—the early human mind. How did it come into existence? And why?

In Promethean Fire Charles J. Lumsden and Edward O. Wilson take us down the twisting corridors through which our species traveled in the two-million-year odyssey from Homo Habilis to modern man. They ask why, out of the millions of species that have emerged and gone extinct, human beings alone took the last, abrupt journey to high intelligence and advanced culture. Lumsden and Wilson attribute the sudden emergence of the human mind to the activation of a mechanism both obedient to physical law and unique to man. This "Promethean fire" is geneculture coevolution, a mutually acting change in the genes and culture that carried man beyond the pervious limits of biology—yet restrains his nature on an elastic, unbreakable leash.

The authors' argument builds impressively from across the entire range of biological and social sciences, but their presentation is essentially lyrical. They share with the reader their reconstruction—both stunning line drawings and colorful vignettes—of how the primitive mind may have functioned in exercising cultural choice with genetic bias. Step by step, they guide us through the diverse categories of evidence, including recent studies of incest avoidance, color vocabulary, infant gaze patterns, taste discriminations, and phobias, which led them toward the theory of cultural transmission based on the importance of genetic filters in individual mental development.

                        5 out of 5 stars Gene-culture coevolution........2002-12-22

This book proves that there is no division between culture and biology, but that both are intertwined. As the authors state: Gene-culture coevolution is "a complicated interaction in which culture is generated and shaped by biological imperatives while biological traits are simultaneously altered by genetic evolution in response to cultural innovation." (p.20)

The authors illustrate this coevolution convincingly, mostly by the case of brother-sister incest.

In fact, this theory tells us how the mind is 'formed', but doesn't explain the origin (come into being) of the mind. The title is a little bit misleading.

It is an original work, because it broadens Darwinism with cultural aspects.
It is also an important work, because it counters the Standard Social Science Model which proposes a fundamental division between biology and culture.
                        Not to be missed.
