                  Book Description

The advent of photography opened new worlds to 19th-century viewers, who became able to visualize themselves, their immediate surroundings, their communities, and the world beyond. The geographical imagination-the ability to know the world and situate oneself in space and time-fostered the expectations and applications of photographic technologies, and photographic technologies expresses the form and reach of the geographical imagination. This dialectic is the basis of this collection of intriguing essays, which explore the diverse ways in which the relationship manifested.

Here's the description off the back of the book.
                    It's true what they say--
all the good guys are married...
                    ...or have Mob connections!

And Natalie Dorset should know. The guy who moved in downstairs may be gorgeous, but the things he says--who uses "whacked" anymore?--and the way he dresses... Well, let's just say that Jack Miller isn't the type you bring home to Mom. Good enough reason for Natalie to stay clear.

Too bad their landlady is cracking matchmaking schemes that make covert ops look like child's play. But before this little--okay, it's a pretty big--attraction can get out of hand, Natalie is determined to get to the bottom of Jack's story.

Because maybe...just maybe...this time the good guy wears black.
                    *************
This is one of the most enjoyable books I have read in awhile. The heroine, Natalie, is smart, funny, and down-to-earth, the hero (or is it mobster?), Jack, is irresistible, and the landlady's (Mrs. Klosterman) antics are hilarious. You could just never really tell with Mrs. Klosterman. From the very first page I was bursting out laughing, although towards the end there wasn't as much to laugh at, it was still a great book. This is definitely my favorite from what I've read in the Flipside line and I now have to go find other books by Elizabeth Bevarly!

3 out of 5 stars Cute Romance .......2006-01-01

Natalie Dorsett is a long-term tenant in a Louisville boarding home and, when Jack Miller moves in, he shakes up her life. Jack is a sexy, but suspicious character who may (or may not) be connected to the Mob, and Natalie and her busybody landlady spend their days and nights conjecturing about Jack's life. I won't ruin the surprise, but suffice to say that Natalie and Jack find a way to romance one another despite his career choice. The book was fun, and funny, and made me laugh out loud quite a lot. The only drawback was that Natalie was a lot more interested in Jack than he was in her; the story started to get too much desperate-girl-chasing-guy for my tastes but was cute to read anyway.

                    5 out of 5 stars A delightful romance!.......2004-11-24

I just loved this charming romance by Elizabeth Bevarly! She took two characters, Natalie and Jack, and put them in an old Victorian house with an eccentric landlady and made magic happen. The characters seem so real and so funny because they think exactly the way we would probably all think if we found ourselves in this situation. Their thought processes and interaction ring totally true in a sort of Bridget Jones way. The mafia and pop culture references made me laugh out loud. With each encounter, you genuinely get a sense of Natalie and Jack falling in love. Jack may be something of a mystery man, but it was fun watching Natalie try to "solve him". I can't think of a more delightful way to spend an afternoon than curled up with a warm cup of cocoa and this book!

                      Book Description

The catapult (katapeltikon) was invented under the patronage of Dionysius I, tyrant of Syracuse, in the 4th century bc. At first only the arrow-firing variant was used, and it was not until the reign of Alexander the Great that stone-projecting catapults were introduced. The Romans adopted these weapons during the Punic Wars and further developed them, before introducing the new arrow-firing ballista and stone-throwing onager. This title traces the often controversial design, development and construction of these weapons throughout the history of the classical world.

                      3 out of 5 stars Nice study.......2006-07-03

If you are interested on the mechanics or how to build one of these artillery pieces this book is for you. Its quite well explained.

It also has some nice pictures.

If you want to know like I did, how they were used or how effective they were, you will find very little unfortunately here.

5 out of 5 stars A good little resource for the siege engine builder........2006-02-25

I build models of seige engines as a hobby, and this book is a valuable addition to my library. It specifically deals with the ballista, a crossbow-like weapon, and does so in good detail. The drawings are detailed and carefully done, and the photos and descriptions are more than adequate for a talented reconstructor to make scale models from tabletop sized to full sized. It is well worth adding to your library if you have an interest in Greek and Roman warfare and engineering.

                        Book Description

Siege machinery first appeared in the West during the Carthaginian invasion of Sicily in the late-5th century BC, in the form of siege towers and battering rams. After a 50-year hiatus these weapons of war re-appeared in the Macedonian armies of Philip II and Alexander the Great, a period that saw the height of their development in the Ancient World. The experience of warfare with both the Carthaginians during the later-3rd century BC, and Philip V of Macedon during the early-2nd century BC, finally prompted the introduction of the siege tower and the battering ram to the Roman arsenal. This title traces the development and use of these weapons across the whole of this period.

                        5 out of 5 stars Indian Boyhood.......2006-04-04

This is a most excellent book because it is "AUTHENTIC" and not one that speaks of prejudice and the horrors of the Native American experience; instead, it allows you to catch a glimpse of what is now lost, a world of beauty and wonder. I highly recommend it to anyone: young or old; red, white, brown, or yellow -- a book that should be preserved and revered.

This book is a great compilation of the story of a young Indianboy who grows up to learn the traditions of his family. It was veryinformative and a great read. It would also be beneficial for people intereted in Native American history or just those wanting to read a good novel.

                        Book Description

Although the traditional Sioux nation was in its last days when Luther Standing Bear was born in the 1860s, he was raised in the ancestral manner to be a successful hunter and warrior and a respectful and productive member of Sioux society. Known as Plenty Kill, young Standing Bear belonged to the Western Sioux tribe that inhabited present-day North and South Dakota. In My Indian Boyhood he describes the home life and education of Indian children. Like other boys, he played with toy bows and arrows in the tipi before learning to make and use them and became schooled in the ways of animals and in the properties of plants and herbs. His life would be very different from that of his ancestors, but he was not denied the excitement of killing his first buffalo before leaving to attend the Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania.

4 out of 5 stars A valuable insight into Lakota lifeways........2004-04-11

Being written for young people, Standing Bear's account of his Lakota childhood is necessarily sanitized and romanticized. Its focus is on the domestic life of his people. Mention is often made of the courage of the warriors but there is no description of any military action. An incident is related of an enemy warrior stumbling into the village. We are told that he was well treated and quickly released. It is hard to believe that that was typical treatment of an enemy. Similarly, the more adult themes of courtship and sexuality are largely ignored. What we are left with is a treasure trove of homely detail: how cooking was accomplished in the absence of metal pots, how the boys caught turtles in the creek, what games they played. This is the very warp and weft of everyday life that gets left out of the broad-sweep histories that concentrate on great battles and famous lives.

Standing Bear may not always be totally reliable, any more than any other commentator - for example, his account of leather tanning, which was strictly women's work, did not quite ring true for me. (Not that I have ever tanned a buffalo hide - I just doubt it can be done in quite the way he describes). All the same this remains an essential work, packed full as it is of fascinating detail, for anyone interested in understanding the lifestyle of the Sioux, and is a perfect gift for a youngster who expresses an interest in American Indians.

                                        Book Description

This skillfully crafted work...combines acute theoretical insight, deep understanding of a wide variety of typologically different languages, and impressive lucidity. It is a wonderful and valuable achievement."--Noam Chomsky.

Whether all human languages are fundamentally the same or different has been a subject of debate for ages. This problem has deep philosophical implications: If languages are all the same, it implies a fundamental commonality--and thus mutual intelligibility--of human thought.

We are now on the verge of solving this problem. Using a twenty-year-old theory proposed by the world's greatest living linguist, Noam Chomsky, researchers have found that the similarities among languages are more profound than the differences. Languages whose grammars seem completely incompatible may in fact be structurally almost identical, except for a difference in one simple rule. The discovery of these rules and how they may vary promises to yield a linguistic equivalent of the Periodic Table of the Elements: a single framework by which we can understand the fundamental structure of all human language. This is a landmark breakthrough both within linguistics, which will herewith finally become a full-fledged science, and in our understanding of the human mind.

Chomsky says that we are born with an innate set of grammar rules which make it easy to learn a language. This book makes it harder to understand the theory.

At first I was a bit hesitant when approaching this book for my introductory linguistics class, but I wanted to give it a chance. I even had hopes that it would be interesting and imaginitive. Instead I found nothing but page after page of inconsistent and horribly overwrought analogies between the two fields. As a chemistry student, I was completely frustrated by the "novel" approach of this book - it may be novel, but that doesn't make it good or even worthwhile. No, not at all. The chemistry comparisons were entirely pointless and just irritating, making the book twice as long as it could have been. It was (understandably) written for people without any knowledge of chemistry, and thus covered only middle-school level material, often leading to gross inaccuracies and longwinded exposition. Who needs ten pages on the history of chemistry just so Baker can draw a congratulatory parallel that isn't even appropriate? Furthermore, if the whole point of a conceit of this type to is to aid in the understanding of the material presented, why is he using a subject he assumes his readers don't know anything about anyway? No clarity is gained this way at all, just pages of evidence that Baker thinks he is incredibly clever. But clever he is not - his entire premise is horribly flawed. How could he justify writing such a book when he states "facts" about chemistry that are blatantly untrue? I know this review was not well organized, but I'm just so annoyed right now that I have to read this useless, frustrating, narcissistic exercise in making an idea fit the truth. Drawing random, inconsistent parallels between two totally different things is not informative at all. It's just stupid. Like Mark Baker.

2 out of 5 stars One tough cookie to swallow.......2006-07-27

oh boy... I think the guy has some really good ideas in there somewhere but this book is not for the novice or the faint-hearted. In fact, the initiated (I've an MA) may find this off-putting. The vast majority of the main section of this book is interminably dull: a catalogue of linguistic minutae which, though put together form something incredibly profound, find my view of the wood obscured by trees.

And that is my biggest problem with the book. What's the point of having something that reviewers describe as a "milestone" in linguistics, when you lack the ability to engage your reader to communicate it. Surely, if it is such a valuable breakthrough, Baker could have done more to make it engaging.

I'm going to have to put this to one side despite it being my second attempt and come back to it later... much later!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book, but not for everyone.......2004-05-25

The Principle and Parameters approach in linguistics is one of Chomsky's most profound theoretical insights, and its elegance and depth in explaining linguistic phenomena across languages is one of the most impressive achievements in linguistics. Baker's book is the best popular introduction to the approach that I have read. It is not as fun and entertaining as Pinker, but it is certainly as understandable, and it does not "dumb down" quite as much as Pinker. The book is a quick read, and contains an impressive chapter on Mohawk. Baker takes the theoretical approaches that he introduces earlier in the book, applies it to the case of Mohawk, formulates a novel explanation, and shows how we can get a deep understanding of the structure of Mohawk from a few, easily understood and elegant principles.

All in all, the book is an excellent introduction to how linguistics is done, and the models through which linguists currently think about languages and linguistic phenomena. It gives the best, most understandable explanation of central theoretical concepts such as "parameter" and "I-language" that I have seen, and gives a brief overview of "optimality theory" and other hypotheses in competition to Chomsky's version of P&P.

There is much to learn from this book, but I think that only those with a genuine interest in and sympathy to generative linguistics will find this book illuminating. To appreciate the depth and insight of the Principles and Parameters approach, you need some mastery of the technicalities and constructions, and mastery of the technicalities requires patience. To understand the problems and solutions that arise, you have to be willing to sit, think, and go over words and sentences in exotic languages slowly, including their inflections, affixes, and word order. Baker provides enough so that anyone can understand them; but you will still need to spend some time on these sections. I recommend this book to educated readers with some competence in linguistics, or to those who have a genuine interest in learning about generative grammar by looking at specific exotic languages.

2 out of 5 stars You're better off reading the Language Instinct.......2004-03-05

Despite having a catchy name, this book is a waste of time, you're better off reading Pinker or go for the real juice (Chomsky).
This book is building evidence towards foregone conclusions: namely, that all languages differ by only a certain set of parameters. This was put forth by Chomsky in the 80's, but it takes Baker over 50 pages to spit out.
It starts with "the mystery and paradox" of the Navajo code-talkers. The paradox being, if Navajo and English are so different as to be undecipherable by the Japanese in WWII, how come they're similar enough to translate from one to the other very quickly by the code-talkers? This is maybe a mystery for children: obviously all languages in the world are similar to a degree because they're all spoken by humans, hence at least basic sentences like "Please bomb the island on the right" should be easy to translate. On the other hand, given that the code was used for hardly 2 years, only in very specific tactical situation, the Japanese had very little time to work it: they couldn't very well just go to Utah or wherever and take "Navajo 101". But isn't it clear that given a little more time they would have been able to learn it? Navajo code was obviously a short-term solution, and was efficient mostly in the field as using coding equipment and code-books of the 40's, on a Pacific island, while mortar shells are landing around you, is not exactly easy.
                                        So much for that paradox.
And what is all this crap about chemistry? What connection is there between linguistics and chemistry? The genius of the chemists was to realize that all elements are composed of the same stuff; but we already know that all languages are composed of the same stuff since they're all spoken by humans, namely one of the few million species that inhabit the earth. The next genius in chemistry discovered that there is a relationship between the different elements; but obviously we know about big groups of related languages, like Indo-European languages. So there's hardly any surprise there.
Baker claims that the next task is to connect all the parameters together in a sort of periodic table, like Mendeleyev did. Dream on.

As for principles and parameters: Baker himself says that for every proposed parameter, there appear to be languages that don't behave well with it. He hides behind the fact that these languages are less frequent- but what's the point of having this parameter if some languages, even a single one, violates it? You will end up with as many parameters as there are languages, and that is no explanation at all.
