Book Description
Welcome to the Dead Dog Caf Comedy hour. The talk is lively and the coffee's always on and you never know who will drop in.
For first time visitors, you'll meet the regulars at the Caf. There's Jasper Friendly Bear, the optimist of the group. We don't know what he did before starting the radio show, but since then he has talked about becoming paparazzi photographer and opening a bank at the caf. There's no end to the good that Jasper can do for the country as a whole. Then there's Gracie Heavy Hand, who is more pragmatic than Jasper. She's very "down to earth" and as a businesswoman she's very supportive of Jasper when it stands to make her some money. Then there's Tom King, who gets to play himself. He thinks he's cerebral. He also thinks that he understands both native and white culture, but he doesn't really understand either.
The Dead Dog Caf Comedy Hour currently runs 3 times a week on Radio One.
24 Episodes in Total
Duration Approximately 4 hours

Hilarious -!.......2003-08-05
Absolutely hilarious, if your ego can withstand uppity Indians.
Audio File review is plainly and hopelessly clueless on this one.
People will wonder why you're laughing so loudly and often........2002-08-27
I'm Canadian (but not First Nations) and laughed so much during the first of these cassettes that I had to stop and buy all of them. The humour is consistent, the delivery is excellent, and the topics are hilarious - I keep listening just to find out how many different ways Jasper Friendly Bear can make Tom buy his coffee.

Dead Dog Cafe Comedy Hour.......2002-01-14
This is possibly the funniest audio recording I own, but if you aren't Canadian, and/or Native American you probably shouldn't bother. They are able to make me laugh even while harpooning me for behaviours I have been guilty of, and while making incredibly cynical comments on European treatment of North America's first residents. Because of the humour, they can make comments that would otherwise be harsh beyond belief. The cast also has a fine sense of the plain slapstick, and absurd presented with great comic timing. I've had to pull the car over several times while listening to it because I was laughing too hard to drive safely.

kept me awake across Manitoba and Sask.......2005-02-15
I drove across Canada in the summer of '98. It was a great trip, but sometimes the driving got boring, I got sick of all the CDs I'd brought along, and there was no good music on the radio. However, CBC was everywhere, and generally kept me amused. Dead Dog Cafe Comedy Hour was the highlight. I thought it was hilarious, and I'm not even Canadian.
More humour from the gang at the cafe.......2002-08-27
You know them by now - Jasper Friendly Bear (who takes advantage of Tom's gullibility on 'Fireside Friendly Bear'), Gracie Heavy Hand (who makes a mean cup of coffee and somehow manages to get Tom to pay every time) and Tom King himself - the 'voice of reason'?. They're fun, they're ridiculous and I had to buy them all.

disapointing.......2007-09-02
I am disapointed with this book. After I recieved it I started reading and it is 90%+ common sence. The content is blahhhhh. I guess I have to much knowledge to be able to learn as much as I want. This book will not be of any use to you if you have any knowledge of the following:
1. the outdoors
2. have hunting experience
3. Boy scouts
4. Camping
5. played paintball
6. read survival books
7. etc......
I still have not found a book that I can learn from. I believe these books are written over a long weekend.
Essential reading for those to whom the content applies........2006-03-15
This book is written by Will Fowler - not Chris McNab as shown.
When this book first arrived on my desk I considered long and hard the sort of person to whom it might be aimed. My first thoughts were no honest civilian - other than the noted Walter Mitty of course, would need to know anything about the art of escape and evasion. Then I realised my viewpoint was incorrect. Civilian advisors and workers are found in theatres of war all over the world - and a good number of them have been abducted over the years.
As far as HM Forces are concerned, I would suggest this book is essential reading for all service personnel.
Whilst I was never SAS trained, I did complete the first phase of that training in 1971. This part of the overall training scheme was called "Selection." As a young corporal, it was something I was required to complete before being posted to the Regiment as part of a team of "attached personnel." In other words, I was sent there to do a rather mundane job in support of the boys who were doing the real work - but first, they had to be satisfied I was fit enough. Now, having read this book, I do so wish it had been available to me all those years ago before that gruelling course began.
Every important topic is covered - ranging from the "will" to survive, the various techniques required when captured and those one needs to employ when foraging for food and covering one's tracks. With important contributions from the Special Forces of the UK, USA and even Russia, this is a book which will teach soldiers something extra about soldiering. It will also give them an excellent appraisal of what is required should they ever need help. Who knows when a single serviceman (or woman) might find themselves alone in a hostile climate where there are no doors on which to knock when thirsty.
Altogether, therefore, this book should be required reading for; (A) Those who are contemplating service with Special Forces; (B) Those who are about to be posted to such theatres of war as Afghanistan and Iraq; (C) Civilian workers in the same broad category and; (D) Just about anyone else with an interest in the subject.
There is much to learned from this book and I congratulate the author on a job well done.

Book Description
Reformation England provides a clear and critical account of recent scholarly approaches, while at the same time retaining a narrative drive. This volume combines reassessment of familiar debates and topics with introductions to newer historiographical concerns: religious life before the Reformation; the early evangelical movement; meanings of 'puritanism' and 'catholicism' in the later sixteenth and seventeenth centuries; the nature of religious 'conformity'; religious conflict and the advent of civil war. The book addresses a problem whose ramifications are still with us: why the English became divided over religion, and why, despite the efforts of a succession of governments, those divisions could not be healed.
Book Description
The new genetics and race, illness, and procreation. Scientists are racing to unravel the code of life in our DNA sequences. But once we know the code, will we know what life means? Will we know what to do with the powerful-healing, destructive, and marketable-information we will have? Barbara Katz Rothman's warm, learned, passionate, and humorous voice is just the one we need to guide us through some of the most loaded issues and technologies of our time-ones that bear on the most intimate aspects of our lives. Her astute observations about the new genetics are combined with personal reflections: about raising a black child; the risks of cancer; midwives and pregnancy; the social web into which we are born; motherhood; time, growth, chance, and all the indefinable things that make us human. She helps us to think about the place of genetic science in our own lives, its role in our social world, and how we choose to think about human life itself. A genetic map will take us places, but we need an imagination to see the relationship between DNA and public policy, between genes and the society we live in, and to understand why human life can't be reduced to genetics. Rothman inspires that imagination, in a book that is essential reading.
Customer Reviews:
Good, not great, book.......2006-04-17
I thought the book was generally well written, although as one reviewer stated, felt as though I was back in undergraduate lecture halls through some. She raises some interesting and thought provoking questions, but it sometimes takes her awhile to make her point. It was an interesting book, and certainly made me evaluate where I stand on some issues.
Important Issues.......2000-07-07
A former medical researcher and now a historian of medical ethics, I take a position between the two that have been expressed to date. We absolutely must consider the consequences of any new technology, and Rothman explores the possible deeper implications of the human genome-- which has at this point been deciphered. At times, her writing smacks of revised undergraduate lectures with all their attendant hyperbole, but for the most part she presents crucial questions in a clear and readable manner. I would recommend this book to persons who want to think responsibly about genome issues, but with the caveat that they should also read other points of view.
Fear of Technology.......1999-11-05
Very negative book that exaggerates dangers of a new technology. To demonstrate her exaggeration, turn to page 14 where she states "Every possible area of basic research has been cut, and cut again, and cut yet again. But genetics gets funded." Between the books that exaggerate the negative and those which ignore the dangers exist more balanced books. One such book is Lois Wingerson's "Unnatural Selection: The Promise and Power of Human Gene Research." Lois correctly points out on page x that "There are exaggeration and misinformation at both ends of that spectrum--and a wealth of important detail in between, steadfastly overlooked by both sides." In my opinion, "Genetic Maps" represents the pessimistic end of that spectrum, and should be avoided.
powerful critique of science of genetics.......1999-01-31
This book helps us better understand the limits of genetic research and testing, and the dangers of believing that this magic new bullet will solve a host of social and medical "problems". For women especially, this book is must reading.

Events are prooving Malthus right. We better take heed........1999-08-26
At a time when many people downplay Malthus, or even ridiculed him, his predictions are coming true-if we just take notice. This is certainly not visible in the suburban supermarket where many of the people who affect what is happening shop. However, for growing numbers of malnourished people on our planet, this is all too apparent. This fine book looks at the underlying causes for this predicament and suggest that the only final way to resolve this problem is to face up to our population problem. Increasing food production, if that were still possible, only postpones the worst, and because the world's population would be larger, would make the suffering even more terrible. Everyone should read this book.
An excellent outline of our indifference toward the future........1998-11-23
Rohe addresses the natural limits that we face, population, resources, environmental degradation, the earths carrying capacity whose totality is a disease of being indifferent toward these limits. He write with the precision and logic of a lawyer which he is.
