3 out of 5 stars Missing chapters.......2005-08-30

The book as such is excellent. However this version of the book had an index for 27 chapters but in the 930 odd pages, we get only 19 chapters.I bought second hand and the seller was nice enough to refund the money. As I require all the chapters, I am planning to buy the hard cover 7th edition of this book.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Tool.......2001-09-07

An Excellent text to complement the teaching of financial accounting fundamentals. Reccomended on a 100%.

                Book Description

This book is dedicated to the theory and methodology of geographical data acquisition, providing comprehensive coverage ranging from the definition of geo-referencing systems, transformation between these systems to the acquisition of geographical data using different methods. Emphasis is placed on conceptual aspects, and the book is written in a semi-technical style to enhance its readability. After reading this book, readers should have a rather good understanding of the nature of spatial data, the accuracy of spatial data, and the theory behind various data acquisition methodologies. This volume is a text book for GIS students in disciplines such as geography, environmental science, urban and town planning, natural resource management, computing and geomatics (surveying and mapping). Furthermore it is an essential reading for both GIS scientists and practitioners who need some background information on the technical aspects of geographical data acquisition.

                  Book Description

The book provides a comprehensive exposition of modern topics in nonlinear analysis with applications to various boundary value problems with discontinuous nonlinearities and nonsmooth constraints. Our framework includes multivalued elliptic problems with discontinuities, variational inequalities, hemivariational inequalities and evolution problems. In addition to the existence of solutions, a major part of the book is devoted to the study of different qualitative properties such as multiplicity, location, extremality, and stability. The treatment relies on variational methods, monotonicity principles, topological arguments and optimization techniques. The book is based on the authors' original results obtained in the last decade. A great deal of the material is published for the first time in this book and is organized in a unifying way. The book is self-contained. The abstract results are illustrated through various examples and applications.

James Stevens-Arce's Soulsaver has had a long genesis. It began as a short story in Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazinein 1983; in 1997, a novella-length version shared the UPC Prize for Science Fiction. Now comes the novel.

Set in Puerto Rico in 2099, Soulsaver features an all-too-believable future in which the U.S. has become a repressive Christian theocracy whose corrupt leaders use entertainment and technology to cement their power. In this world of televised miracles, overpopulation and poverty tempt ever-increasing numbers of people to suicide. Suicide remains a mortal sin, but most "self-inflicteds" can be restored to life--like it or not--by soulsavers trained in advanced medical procedures. Juan Bautista Lorca is a rookie soulsaver whose faith in the righteousness of his actions is absolute. But his faith is about to be tested by revelations. Or, rather, Revelations--the Biblical kind. The Last Days are at hand, and the Second Coming will be televised, "with extra special guest: Our Lord Jesus Christ!"

Despite its SF trappings and satirical barbs, Stevens-Arce's tale is traditional Christian fare. Far from being the Orwellian satire it appears at first blush to be, Soulsaver comes to praise the Christian God, not to bury Him. Juan Bautista's journey from callow youth to mature manhood, and the concurrent tempering of his faith, may appeal more to young adult than to adult readers. Still, despite faltering at the end through a regrettable literalism that deflates much of what has gone before, Soulsaver is a fast-paced, amusing and often insightful first novel from a talented author. --Emerson Cooper

                  Book Description

Juan Bautista and his partner Fabiola Mu–oz drive a FreezVan for the Suicide Prevention Corps of America. Their job is to race to the scene of a suicide, put the body on ice, and rush it, siren yowling, to the Saint Francis of Assisi Resurrection Center in time for repair and resuscitation. Usually this works and the former suicide promises to sin no more, if for no other reason than the pain of being resurrected is even worse than that of committing suicide. Still, the suicide rate seems to be climbing. Juan loves his job, and he loves the spiritual leaders who created it, Reverend Jimmy Divine and the beautiful woman called the Shepherdess. But when he's asked by them to spy on his partner, suspected of being a heretic believer in the Twin Messiahs, he's no longer sure who or even what to believe-and he's no longer sure that all the suicides are really suicides.

I am not a science fiction reader and didn't know what to expect from this book, but after reading it, I will be counting the days for James Stevens next novel. It had so many things that are happening in our moral decaying world ,that it gave me an earie feeling, like a premonition, of something not too far away if we don't open our eyes on time.Yet it gives you hope, because it teach you that the answer to your doubts and fears are inside you. Only you can save yourself.I enjoyed every word in it and could not stop reading until the last page.

Religious fanatics control this truly dystopian society of 2099. Puerto Rico is a microcosm of events that happen across the USA for it is the 52nd state. Faith and religious beliefs are examined, challenged, and altered in this delightful, somewhat shocking, all too plausible novel.

Juan Bautista Lorca, a rookie technician, and his partner Fabiola drive a FreezVan for the Suicide Prevention Corps of America (SPCA -- yes, a glimmer of the satire woven throughout the book). They race to the scene of a suicide, pack ice around the body, then take it Saint Francis of Assisi Resurrection Center in time for repair and revival. Returning to life after the harrowing experience of death, deep freeze, and resuscitation generally prevents the individual from trying to commit this heinous crime again. Only those who truly do not want to live in an over populated, under fed, under educated, and overly controlled society try a second suicide -- and they make sure the body can't be made to live again.

This book has won many awards: Best First Novel of 2000--Rocky Mountain News; Best of the Year 2000 list--San Francisco Chronicle; Best First Novels of 2000 Recommended Reading List--Locus magazine.

This is the story that I could easily see Kevin Smith (Silent Bob) turning into another great hit movie. Five stars.

5 out of 5 stars For Readers Interested in Writing.......2002-01-26

A novel that uses first person, present tense is not easy to find, probably because there are not many convincing reasons to use it. In Soulsaver, James Stevens-Arce does it well.

This book is an interesting and fast-paced satire. The protagonist, Juan Bautista Lorca, is a callow youth blinded by the society in which he lives. That Stevens-Arce chooses to tell his story from this little twerp's viewpoint is daring for the reader doesn't take immediately to him. Stevens-Arce carefully mitigates that problem in several ways.

First, he doesn't get inside his head much until the character begins to change, and to grow. We can never be certain but I believe this was a conscious decision because poor Juan doesn't have a deep thought stored anywhere in there, anyway. It is a perfect approach to this kind of character building.

One of the difficulties of using this method is that the reader gets less insight into the character than we have become accustomed to. Any we do get comes from the dialogue and/or what is happening around Juan. There is an advantage here, as well. The action moves forward very quickly and we find ourselves immersed in the time (The Year of Our Lord 2099) and the place (San Juan, the capitol city of our 52nd state). And, surprising, this is enough. The author has carefully balanced what the reader is likely to miss with what she gets.

As Juan develops and finds his own depth, we find that Steven-Arce is a writer with a first-class instinct for words as well. For those of us who long to see, hear, and feel when we read, this novel is not a disappointment. We must wait, but we get wonderful similes like, "...the sun...looks like a communion wafer pasted against the sky," and "...the Swiss cheese of pigeon holes cut into the ancient wall..." Stevens-Arce has crafted a book where there is only straightforward, uncluttered writing until the reader is hooked. Only then do we find passages that are pure poetry. By that time we find ourselves literally gobbling it up.

Stevens-Arce has one more trick to keep the reader hanging in there while this shallow youth ogles breasts, bounces to the music blasting into his headphones and relishes his own benign happiness with himself and the god-awful world he doesn't see around himself. He uses present tense. I hate present tense. Yet I hardly noticed. It propels the novel forward when it needs momentum. After it has done its job the reader becomes so used to it, it is no longer a factor.

If I were still teaching English, this book would become one of my texts. It's not often that one finds first person, present tense put to such carefully crafted use. It's also not often that one finds a book that lauds the often-maligned ability of thinking for oneself. Next to Holden Caulfield, Juan Bautista Lorca may be the best literary example for youth in recent times.

5 out of 5 stars Not a book, I'd normally pick up, but..........2001-12-26

A gripping, fast-paced, amusing look at a future that was both terrifying and hopeful. Crisp, sure writing swept me into the story, willy-nilly. Well worth the ride!

                  3 out of 5 stars A nice relaxing evening.......2001-07-03

What do you like in book? If you are like me, it is never just one quality that you look for, it is a combination of several qualities which vary in amount depending on your mood.

I didn't know what to expect when I read this book. And honestly were I not a member of the same writer's workshop as James Stevens-Arce, I would not have bought this book. It is just not my thing. Don't get me wrong. A lot of people in the workshop really loved this book for the story, but as I said, satire is really not my thing. To me it was just a nice relaxing evening on the couch-I don't get very many of those-so this was well worth the price to me

The thing that most impressed me about this book is the speed with which you can read it. It just draws you in and really does a better job at it than just about any book I have ever read. It was amazing, I read this book in just about two hours and forty-five minutes. This makes the book especially relaxing to read I think.

So is the book good? I think you will need to decide that for yourself. However, one thing I will say is that James Stevens-Arce is without a doubt the hardest working author I know. He always takes the time to go that little extra mile for the fans..

This is a very good introduction to the history of the military religious orders: Templars, Hospitallers of Saint John (today Knights of Malta), Santiago, Calatrava, Alcantara, Teutons and others. The first ones, Templars and Hospitallers, were founded in the XII Century, after the First Crusade, in order to protect pilgrims in the Holy Land and to provide humanitarian and medical services. Soon, these monks became more warriors than anything else, true machines of war which came to be the first organized and properly trained and disciplined professional elite troops in the West since the Roman Empire. The West and Islam lived then (and still do) in a permanent state of threat and holy war. Although these warriors made vows of poverty, obedience and chastity, they soon accumulated enormous riches, fighted one another and their discipline, especially in sexual matters, relaxed.

The first part of the books tells the two centuries of Christian occupation in the Holy Land, which the Islam had taken by force centuries before, and where, despite some resounding successes, the Christians ended up being totally defeated and expelled, to this day. The second part tells the story of the Crusade in the Baltic, performed by the Teutonic Knights against the pagan Slav Prussians, terrifying cannibals adoring spirits in trees, as well as snakes in the woods. These Teutonics founded what was probably the first "modern" state: Prussia (the German one). This story is practically unknown, in spite of being totally fascinating. The third part is the Reconquest of Spain, where the orders were crucial in defeating the Moors. Then come the stories of the Hospitallers in Rhodes and Malta -also wonderful- and then what became of the existing orders today.

One striking common theme during the thousand years covered is the permanent and bloody conflict between the West and Islam. In spite of the torrent of names, places and dates, this book is an incredible collection of adventures and improbable deeds, especially the sieges of Acre, Rhodes and Malta, as well as the Spanish Reconquista and the Prussian episode. The tone of the book is apologetic, the author himself being a Knight of Malta, but it also vividly portraits the terrible atrocities committed by both sides. It fills a huge vacuum in the historical and political education of almost any reader, besides being an impressive saga of courage, dedication, violence, survival, glory, triumph, defeat and corruption at the same time. It really motivates you to read more about this subject.

2 out of 5 stars Good reference material, bad read........2005-09-25

Be prepared to sift through some slow and awkward writing and to figure what are the important parts on your own. Don't expect help on this from Seward, who seems unable to separate the wheat from the chaff of the history of the various orders.

I can understand giving short shrift to the trial of the Templars, for example. It's well covered in other works and anyone passingly familiar with pre-Renaissance Europe knows the basics of the story. But all the important, interesting, and exciting events in the history of the military orders are dealt with in the same cursory and bland tone that is used to describe who followed whom into this office or that one.

If you are looking for a book to capture the excitement of the crusades, the courage of the Knights of Malta, the passion of Teutonic Knights, this is not that book. If you are looking for reference material to write your own book, this might serve the purpose. If you are desperate to know more about the military religious orders, then perhaps this book will serve your needs.

It's about as exciting as reading the begats in the Bible. Sure there's a lot of information there, but you have to really care about the subject to make it all the way through.

3 out of 5 stars Very Good Overview.......2002-11-30

This well written book is intended as a concise introduction to an interesting and important topic, the military orders of the Middle Ages. Seward covers the founding of the major orders, their organization, and major episodes of their history. To do real justice to this topic would be an immense task as the story covers centuries of European history. Seward elected to produce an overview giving an outline of their history and highlighting some of the more picturesque episodes. This book, consequently, sometimes has a superficial quality. I would have liked, for example, a better description of the role of the Templars in Medieval commerce and banking.
Seward shows that the military orders were born in the Crusading zeal that infected Medieval Europe and were founded initially to help and safeguard pilgrims to the Holy Land. They promptly became a unique Medieval hybrid, combining Cistercian monasticism and Chivalric knightly values. Rapidly gaining influence in the Crusader Kingdoms and considerable wealth in Europe, the military orders were significant actors in the complicated politics of the Eastern Mediterrenean. Similar orders developed on other important frontiers between Christian Europe and non-Christian polities, notably in Spain and the eastern Baltic littoral. In Spain, the military orders were the shock troops of the Reconquista. In the Baltic, the Teutonic Knights led the conquest and Christianization of Prussia and what is now a good part of the Baltic states.
Seward shows well how the military orders become an integral component of religous and political life in Europe. A consistent theme is that the growth in importance of the orders was accompanied by involvement in the complex dynastic, political, and religous struggles of Medieval Europe and the Crusader States. The decline of the military orders in the Early Modern period was a result of the increasing power of European monarchies and declining need for their essential mission, the military struggle against non-Christians. The military orders of Iberia were essentially absorbed by the Church and monarchies, the great Templar order was destroyed by the expanding power of the French monarchy, and the Hospitallers were marginalized by their expulsion from the Eastern Mediterrenean and the ultimate success of European struggle against the Ottoman empire. Some of the orders survive today as charitable institutions associated with the remains of the European nobility.

4 out of 5 stars Inside The Medieval Mind........2002-03-26

Much can be said for this fine piece of historical writing. First, the book covers in detail a subject that is generally dealt with as a curiousity at best. The author does justice to the motives, organization, methods and mentality of those organizations that made up the military orders. As has been pointed out, the writing can be a bit dense, but this I attribute to a British author's assumption that his readers will be well educated in the general history of the period; so too bad us, not too bad him.
Aside from the numerous facts and anecdotes which illuminate the book, I found the work of particular interest to one who struggles to understand the medieval mind. We moderns can only scratch our collective heads when confronted with a concept like "monks of war". However, once the mind is opened to the reality of the period, and the mindset of an age of faith, much that has been lost becomes understandable again.
Thus, the greatest value of this book is that it takes the reader on a journy of discovery to a world that belonges to each of us. The Crusades, La Reconquista and numerous other episodes can now be studied in their true light.
This is a book well worth reading.

                            Book Description

When Robert F. Peary claimed discovery of the North Pole on April 6, 1909, the only other American to stand beside him was a black man, Matthew A. Henson. A native of Charles County, Maryland, Henson accompanied Peary on eight Arctic journeys between 1891 and 1909. His skill in interpreting the language of the North Greenland Eskimos, in building boats and repairing sledges, and in driving dog teams was essential to the ultimate success of the admiral, who wrote, "I can't get along without him." Yet Henson was for the most part ignored, even by Peary, after that historic expedition.
A Black Explorer at the North Pole reminds the reader that where Peary went so did Henson—often one step ahead as a troubleshooter. Drawing largely on his diaries, Henson describes the voyage of the steamer Roosevelt to Cape Sheridan on Ellesmere Island in the Canadian Arctic and the four-hundred-mile trek by dogsled over treacherous ice to the top of the world.
Susan A. Kaplan, in her introduction to the Bison Book edition, discusses Henson’s accomplishments and the current controversy surrounding Peary's claim to discovery of the North Pole.

                              Book Description

Design of Low-Voltage, Low-Power CMOS Operational Amplifier Cells describes the theory and design of the circuit elements that are required to realize a low-voltage, low-power operational amplifier. These elements include constant-gm rail-to-rail input stages, class-AB rail-to-rail output stages and frequency compensation methods. Several examples of each of these circuit elements are investigated. Furthermore, the book illustrates several silicon realizations, giving their measurement results.
The text focuses on compact low-voltage low-power operational amplifiers with good performance. Six simple high-performance class-AB amplifiers are realized using a very compact topology making them particularly suitable for use as VLSI library cells. All of the designs can use a supply voltage as low as 3V. One of the amplifier designs dissipates only 50µW with a unity gain frequency of 1.5 MHz. A second set of amplifiers run on a supply voltage slightly above 1V. The amplifiers combine a low power consumption with a gain of 120 dB. In addition, the design of three fully differential operational amplifiers is addressed.
Design of Low-Voltage, Low-Power CMOS Operational Amplifier Cells is intended for professional designers of analog circuits. It is also suitable for use as a text book for an advanced course in CMOS operational amplifier design.
