    Book Description

Our primary reason for writing this book was to produce a text that can be easily understood by students and still provide comprehensive coverage of the topics generally found in a cost accounting text. To achieve this goal, we have included extensive illustrations in each chapter and eliminated unnecessary words and details. Every chapter includes the following additional sections to aid the student in understanding the subject matter:chapter review, glossary, comprehensive summary problems with solutions, and assignment materials in the form of questions, multiple choice, exercises, and problems. Whenever applicable, assignment material was adapted from C.P.A. and C.M. A. examinations. Many chapters also include an appendix providing information beyond the scope of that which is normally presented in a cost accounting text. Fundamental concepts and techniques are covered in depth before a student is exposed to the more complex areas of cost accounting. To ensure a solid foundation, this text presents a thorough coverage of product costing. A second part, Cost Accounting: Concepts and Applications for Managerial Decision Making (which includes Chapter ( followed by Chapter 14-24), deals mainly with performance evaluation and managerial decision making. We feel it is vital for students to have a thorough understanding of product costing before they can attempt to analyze the data produced from today's sophisticated cost accounting systems.

            Book Description

Because millions of adolescents become involved in criminal and delinquent acts each year, questions are raised about the effectiveness of punishments and juvenile offender treatment programs. Juvenile Justice examines the strengths and weaknesses of the juvenile justice system. Valuable information is provided about the rehabilitation of juvenile offenders in programs such as addiction treatment, family counseling, structured wilderness camps, group homes, aftercare, and restitution and victim-offender mediation. Includes over twenty contributors.

I am impressed with Al Roberts' edition of "Juvenile Justice - Policies, Programs and Services." As an 18 year veteran of the juvenile field I found the contributions to this book to be timely, accurate and compelling for anyone interested in youth services. One needs only to look over the chapter titles to find that Roberts hits all the bases. Chapter 3 "The Coming Storm" and Chapter 19 "Balancing the Response to Youth Crime..." will leave you thinking and may well change your youth & family practice and design of services!

                          Book Description

This book gives an historical perspective of Plate Tectonics. Furthermore, it discusses the foundations of rigid plate tectonics and the limitations of this approach. This classic approach can explain the data to a level of 95 % precision. Some anomalies subsit which must be explained by a more general model. The authors refer to these anomalies: for example discrepancies between spatial geodetical data and rigid kinematics in oceans or rheology significance of fractal dimensions in seismicity and faulting, etc. In this unique book the reader has access to data as well as to interpretations from a broad spectrum of disciplines. Great emphasis is placed on the limitations of the rigid plate tectonics theory of the earth.

                            Book Description

Traveling with Athena celebrates the odyssey of a humorous blind professor and his courageous wife as they explore numerous archeological sites in Italy and Greece.

Told in a witty and often poignant way, this tale also raises the possibility of supernatural intervention as Dr. Dan and his wife Nancy confront a variety of tourist challenges in their ninety-day adventure.

Often tied to comical allusions to the classics but accessible to all adult readers, this fast-paced collection of stories, opinions, and insights will certainly both entertain and inspire.

Readers will enjoy Dan and NancyÂ's battle with European mosquitoes in the chapter Harpies in Miniature. These same readers will perhaps shed a tear as they read of DanÂ's courage and NancyÂ's patience in Of Mycenae and Men where Dan makes the climb of his life.

If the reader likes travel, laughter, inspiration, and the chance to meet an interesting couple, all he needs is to go Traveling with Athena. ItÂ's the perfect book for companionship at an airport, on a plane, or at oneÂ's bedside.

4 out of 5 stars Contemporary connections to the classics.......2003-07-25

This book is a stimulating read for anyone who enjoys myth and likes to experiment with contemporary allusions to classical themes. In addition, it contains wonderful details about Italy and Greece that are a nostalgic trip for those who have travelled there and a new adventure for those who haven't.

Somewhat intellectual, but usually with tongue pressed firmly into cheek.

If you are a fan of history, and the civil war, you will love this book. It is the story of the 54th Mass. (the first official Black Regiment during the civil war) with Col. Robert G. Shaw in command. It is written by one of the Captains that actually served with the 54th, so it explains a lot of detail a normal historian could never find out. If you liked the movie Glory (which was the story of the 54th Mass) I recommend you getting this book.

Leading experts from the disciplines of history, literature, art history and anthropology examine black African experiences and representations from slavery to black musicians and dancers, from real and symbolic Africans at court to the views of the Catholic Church, and from writers of African descent to Black African criminality. Their findings demonstrate the variety and complexity of black African life in fifteenth and sixteenth-century Europe, and how it was affected by Renaissance ideas and conditions.

The Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s symbolized black liberation and sophistication--the final shaking off of slavery, in the mind, spirit, and character of African-Americans. It was a period when the African-American came of age, with the clearest expression of this transformation visible in the remarkable outpouring of literature, art, and music. In these years the "New Negro" was born, as seen in the shift of black leadership from Booker T. Washington to that of W.E.B. Du Bois, from Tuskegee to New York, and for some, even to the African nationalism of Marcus Garvey. In Voices from the Harlem Renaissance, Nathan Irvin Huggins provides more than 120 selections from the political writings and arts of the period, each depicting the meaning of blackness and the nature of African-American art and its relation to social statement. Through these pieces, Huggins establishes the context in which the art of Harlem Renaissance occurred. We read the call to action by pre-Renaissance black spokesmen, such as A. Philip Randolph and W.E.B. DuBois who--through magazines such as The Messenger ("the only radical Negro magazine"), and the NAACP's Crisis--called for a radical transformation of the American economic and social order so as to make a fair world for black men and women. We hear the more flamboyant rhetoric of Marcus Garvey, who rejected the idea of social equality for a completely separate African social order. And we meet Alain Locke, whose work served to redefine the "New Negro" in cultural terms, and stands as the cornerstone of the Harlem Renaissance. Huggins goes on to offer autobiographical writings, poetry, and stories of such men and women as Langston Hughes, Nancy Cunard, Helen Johnson, and Claude McKay--writings that depict the impact of Harlem and New York City on those who lived there, as well as the youthfulness and exuberance of the period. The complex question of identity, a very important part of the thought and expression of the Harlem Renaissance, is addressed in work's such as Jean Toomer's Bona and Paul and Zora Neale Hurston's Sweat. And Huggins goes on to attend to the voices of alienation, anger, and rage that appeared in a great deal of the writing to come out of the Harlem Renaissance by poets such as George S. Schuyler and Gwendolyn Bennett. Also included are over twenty illustrations by such artists as Aaron Douglas whose designs illuminated many of the works we associate with the Harlem Renaissance: the magazines Fire and Harlem; Alain Locke's The New Negro; and James Weldon Johnson's God's Trombones. The vitality of the Harlem Renaissance served as a generative force for all New York--and the nation. Offering all those interested in the evolution of African-American consciousness and art a link to this glorious time, Voices from the Harlem Renaissance illuminates the African-American struggle for self-realization.

                                        Book Description

                                        Foreword by Daniel Dennett

While it is fashionable today to dismiss the "bad old days" of artificial intelligence and rave about emergent self-organizing systems, Robert French has created a model of human analogy-making that attempts to bridge the gap between classical top-down AI and more recent bottom-up approaches.

The research described in this book is based on the premise that human analogy-making is an extension of our constant background process of perceiving -- in other words, that analogy-making and the perception of sameness are two sides of the same coin. At the heart of the author's theory and computer model of analogy-making is the idea that the building-up and the manipulation of representations are inseparable aspects of mental functioning, in contrast to traditional AI models of high-level cognitive processes, which have almost always depended on a clean separation.

A computer program called Tabletop forms analogies in a microdomain consisting of everyday objects on a table set for a meal. The theory and the program rely on the idea that myriad stochastic choices made on the microlevel can add up to statistical robustness on a macrolevel. To illustrate this, French includes the results of thousands of runs of his program on several dozen interrelated analogy problems in the Tabletop microworld.

French's work is exciting not only because it reveals analogy-making to be an extension of our complex and subtle ability to perceive sameness but also because it offers a computational model of mechanisms underlying these processes. This model makes significant strides in putting into practice microlevel stochastic processing, distributed processing, simulated parallelism, and the integration of representation-building and representation-processing.

5 out of 5 stars THE right track to genuine intelligence.......2000-02-06

Since AI researchers are generally engineers, they historically did what engineers do: they broke up the mind in very clear-cut divisions, one for the perception of the things out there in the world, and another, symbolically, to do "abstract cogitation".

For deep reasons, this was an invalid move, but only a few could see it. Robert French surely could, for his highly original tabletop project exhibits some of the best insights in Artificial Intelligence ever.

AI is still so much pervaded with the wrong ideas that this book will need to take some time to make its definitive mark on the history of the field.

If genuine understanding is ever to be built into a machine, understanding of the kind that Searle's gang will be forever denying, then it will come from an architecture similar to that proposed in this book.

Then again, I could turn out to be wrong. But let us let History decide on this issue.

                                            Description:
This study investigated levels of genetic diversity and population differentiation among Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis) populations classified as core or peripheral based on ecological niche, and continuous or disjunct based on species distribution. Large numbers of trees (N=200) were sampled from each of eight populations to evaluate the distribution of rare as well as common alleles across the species range. Codominant alleles for eight sequence-tagged site loci were classified based on frequency and geographic distribution in order to develop appropriate sampling strategies to target specific classes of alleles. An important finding of this study is the similarity in genetic diversity as measured by expected heterozygosity between core populations (mean H"E=0.58) and peripheral populations (mean H"E=0.56). However, there was significant inbreeding in peripheral (F"I"S=0.17) but not in core (F"I"S=0.03) populations. Large differences in gene flow estimates were observed between core (Nm=9.0) and peripheral populations (Nm=3.5). Irrespective of population classification, over 75% of the alleles were common and widespread. Only one allele was classified as rare and localized, and this allele was limited to one core, disjunct and two peripheral, disjunct populations. There was stronger evidence of past bottlenecks in peripheral, disjunct populations than in core, continuous populations. Results are used to suggest sampling strategies for capture of maximum level of genetic diversity and conservation of rare alleles. The conservation of peripheral, particularly disjunct, populations as well as populations in putative glacial refugia may present the best opportunity for conserving rare alleles.

                                              Description:
We examined the bean rhizobia community other than the predominant species Rhizobium etli present in soils of a region that is part of the range occupied by the host in Northwest Argentina, which showed Rep and 16S rDNA RFLP polymorphism. Two populations represented by isolates T29N3L and T44N22P were found to be distinct chromosomal genotypes and closely related to species Rhizobium tropici and Agrobacterium rhizogenes. Their symbiotic genes were analyzed and found to cluster with those from R. tropici as well as with rhizobia isolated from leguminous trees. Three nodulation metabolites produced by T44N22P were detected which are tetra- and pentameric chitocompounds, N-methylated, O-carbamoylated, and N-substituted either by a C"1"8":"0 or C"1"8":"1 acyl chain at their non-reducing end, and all them sulphated at the reducing end. Isolates T29N3L and T44N22P exhibited broad host range but unlike T29N3L, only T44N22P was able to efficiently nodulate Medicago truncatula.
