Nice strategies.......2003-06-29

I liked the strategy section of this book talking about how to use the futures in practice not just about what they are. I have used the buy-write strategy that the author talks about and have done very well so far. I just wish these contracts were more popular so the liquidity would be better.

I agreed with the guy who gave this book a star. When I saw the book, it looks good. But when I started to read it, I realized more than 50% of the book are definitions. It is way too simple.

This book covers more advanced strategies that were interesting like pairs and buy-writes. Also good for learning about hedging large equity holdings in a single stock. I have read all the books available right now on the topic and this one had the most substance and information.

First of all, let me address the fact that every review prior to this one is a shill for either the author or the publisher.

Next, the book was far too simplistic and read more like a glossary of securities. Not too much valuable information here - better to just stick to something by John Murphy, as futures trading translates very well into SSF trading, aside from the tax handling.

If you're looking for a basic glossary, this may be for you, but it's advertised as a book with substance. It fails horribly, which is why I give it only one star.

this guide was great in helping me understand single futures. I liked how they are explained in a manner of applying them to portfolios and not just technical details of the product.

Having owned the previous version of this book, I would have to say that the layout in this new version is much more linear and easy to follow. In addition to new experiments, the instructions are clear for a beginning organic lab student. That being said, however, the material that the book is constructed from is sub par...the pages are very delicate, seeming to be made of tissue paper...Over all, I would recommend this book for its content, but not for the craftsmanship.

AN ABSOLUTE TREASURE!.......2001-07-25

Pavia et al's Organic Laboratory Techniques (2nd Ed) is an astonishingly excellent book for the beginning student.

In great (yet delightful) detail it describes a series of 60 varied experiments designed to acquaint the reader with a plethora of laboratory techniques, from Measuring Volumes and Weights up thru Chromatography and Spectroscopy.

Particularly good are the many exceptionally clear drawings of laboratory apparatus, and rational behind the instrumentation. (Eg, do you know why you should put a trap in the aspirator hose, or for that matter how the aspirator (vacuum) works?) Sprinkled throughout are hints on how best to perform this, that or the other thing.

A thorough reading of this gem will make you right at home in the organic chemistry laboratory, and indeed will practically make you an organic chemist in spite of yourself.

In fact, if you are thinking of going to college, you might ask whether this text is used in the college's Organic Chemistry Lab course. If not, and you are interested in science, find a school that uses it! And if you are already in a lab course with another text, you would be well advised to get this eminently readable treasure also.

Excellent Lab Text But Not Everyone Has To Buy It.......2000-08-29

Though a complete laboratory text with 50+ experiments, lab techniques, tables of unknowns and spectroscopy, the organic faculty prepare our own lab manual to be followed. Pavia text becomes a close handy reference for lab techniques and setup. The techniques section, which include filtration, crystallization, distillation (simple, fractional, and steam), chromatogrpahy (column, thin-layer, and gas)... should be carefully studied before conducting experiments for beginning students. Unless your organic lab course follows almost exactly the outline of experiments in this text, you can check it out from the library and read it.

Best organic laboratory manual available!.......1999-05-17

I have taken a full course using this book and I think that it is the best one I have seen! Organic chemistry is a hard subject and this book lays it out in an understandable way. The "techniuques" section is current, readable, and the pictures are well done. The essays that accompany many of the experiments are entertaining and give good background information that helps doing the experiments more enjoyable. Probably the best section is the "identification of unknowns" section which lays out in a good logical way how to identify what you have in the lab. I think that the book also addresses and promotes a great trend in chemistry i.e. microscale research that reduces waste and promotes conservation of chemicals and the environment.

Joe Callaway has managed to write a book that tells the real truth of how it was for him and the rest of us in the Mekong Delta. He is able to capture the truth of the Vietnam War experience, the truth of the political issues surrounding the war and the true compassion that he felt for the soldiers who served with him. When I read "Mekong First Light" I was overwhelmed by the realizm and sincerity contained in Joe's words. His description of the infantryman's life in the Delta is not sugar coated or glamorized. It is sometimes sad, sometimes funny, sometimes peaceful and sometimes catastrophic but always real. I have read many books about the Vietnam War and "Mekong First Light" is on the top shelf among the very best. Ernie Parker, A Co., 2/60th Infantry.

haunted by similarities.......2007-08-30

As a retired Army officer who served during the Vietnam Era (but not in Vietnam) and in Desert Storm I highly recommend this book. The section of the book explaining how we were led into the morass of the Vietnam war is superb. I have reread the last several chapters many times as CPT Callaway so eloquently explains his personal feelings about war. I especially loved his chapter to his sons. I am haunted by this book and how it portrays the similarity (my thoughts after reading his explanation of how we got into Vietnam) between our entry into Vietnam and our entry into Iraq. I commend CPT Gallaway for an excellent piece of literature.

Inside One Man's Journey: Past and Present.......2006-10-28

Captain Callaway gives us a citizen soldier's perspective of the horrors of war and the folly of America's involvement in the Vietnam War. Joe Callaway was a kid who no one thought would ever amount to much but enlisting in the Army as a private, he would eventually become an effective combat platoon leader. I appreciate his honesty in sharing with his readers the pain he experienced in losing so many friends and his retrospective thoughts on the war, the army, lost friends, leaders, and returning to a different America. Thank you, Joe for writing a very personal book and for helping us connect with the emotions and difficulties of that time and war.

Mekong First Light.......2005-02-01

I was in Joe Callaway's OCS class and was assigned, with him, to C Company, 2nd Battalion, 60th Infantry after graduation. We went through training raw recruits, and ourselves, to be a unit at Ft Riley then shipped over to the Mekong Delta. Joe has captured the demands of being an Infantry platoon leader in combat in an exceptioal way. The stress, both physical and mental, of combat operations is accurately stated in human terms. His dealings with the realities of combat are especially relavent to anyone preparing to be a combat leader. Men's lives hinge on your decisions and Joe's soul searching when one is lost is an experience shared by all leaders since we began warfare. I experienced the same feelings and stress. We had to deal with it and Joe vividly describes how he did.

I have recommended this book to other veterans of C Company and all have responded to it in a positive manner. If you want to know what a young man thrust in to a leadership role goes through, read this book.

Don't miss it!.......2005-01-25

With Mekong First Light, Joe Callaway has accomplished a very ambitious work not only on his harrowing experiences as an infantry officer in Viet Nam, but how he got there in the first place and how the experience affected his life since those two tours. The book vividly describes the reality of war: the violent loss of life and the mayhem of combat operations, along with a myriad of other factors that affect combat soldiers like lack of sleep, sunburn, bug bites and personal issues back in the real world. This depiction transcends Viet Nam, as it is easier to imagine the environment any combat soldier endures, especially the current conflict in Iraq.

While many autobiographical accounts of Viet Nam stop end there, Callaway is just beginning. He puts the entire experience in perspective, beginning with his description of growing up in semi-rural Alabama that has all of the homesy, poignant flavor of My Dog Skip, in stark contrast to his high school years in up-scale, trendy Connecticut...a lifestyle juxtaposition that left him more than a little dislocated socially and academically on the eve of the horror of Viet Nam which he would back into.

Aside from the Oscar-winning film drama, Coming Home, few Viet Nam stories have successfully captured life after combat, especially for the average Joe who survived the physical maiming to deal with the emotional ghosts. Callaway depicts how he re-entered "the real world", as vets called it and how he still deals with it today.

A special bonus is in the introduction, where Callaway offers one of the most complete, yet succinct, explanations of the historical perspective of how and why we ended up in such a quagmire in Viet Nam. As I am myself a collegiate Asian history major, I challenge anyone to do a better job. Throughout, Callaway does not hint of any political bias, except for a brief swipe at John Kerry's Viet Nam Vets Against the War activites. But then Callaway clearly understands that the personal experience of comabt is in itself is not about red or blue states, but only about physical, emotional and moral survival....a contest that doesn't end the day you leave the combat zone.

I read the book during the 2004 presidential campaign, amidst the debate over Iraq. While the wars are in many ways different, the similarities, especially at the personal level, are great. Hence, you can read it with another conflict in mind. My son is planning to take a high school seminar next year on the Viet Nam era. I will heartily recommend this book to the instructor as a heart-felt, provacative addition.

While he strongly states that this book was a life's passion to expunge his soul, Callaway is deserving to be heard again. His integrity and sensitivity permeates his writing, and he is capable of telling a good story. Perhaps he can build on the stories of his youth in Enterprise, AL with more My-Dog-Skip parables or equally poignant tales. Well done, Joe Callaway!

For those who are involved in any way with the mathematical theory of 2-D elasticity, this book is really a must have. Though the first edition goes back to 1949 (English edition by Noordhoff Ltd in 1953), it still contains everything that is known in this field. It actually employs the theory of holomorphic functions, Cauchy integrals and conformal mapping in order to solve the various boundary value problems met in plane elasticity. It is almost self contained as far as it concerns its mathematical background. Its results can be used to treat numerous applications of practical interst, such as cracks, inclusions, holes, contact problems, etc. Its a pitty it is out of print (or in print-on-demand only). It can be used along with the same author's "Singular Integral Equations" (another masterpiece on the subject) and Gakhov's:"Boundary Value Problems". Basic knowledge of complex analysis is a prerequisite. It covers 700 pages, contents are: 1. Analysis of stress 2. Analysis of strain 3. Basic Equations 4. This paper examines local responses to potential ecotourism development in the Tawushan Nature Reserve located in southeastern Taiwan. Community attitude and intention toward four dimensions of ecotourism, including conservation of natural resources, preservation of cultural tradition, sustainable community development, and participation in ecotourism planning and management, were measured. Furthermore, the paper examines whether or not there is congruence between community attitude and intention toward ecotourism development. Analysis is based on data collected using face-to-face questionnaire interviews in two indigenous communities consisting primarily of the Paiwan ethnic group. The study findings show that local people hold generally positive views of the measures necessary to achieve ecotourism; however, their intentions to engage in behaviors to support these measures do not entirely match with their positive views. This suggests that while local residents may support ecotourism development based on international guidelines, their intentions to act will depend on local environmental, social, and politico-economic conditions. It is suggested that issues related to community empowerment, relationship between government and communities, value conflicts introduced by ecotourism development, and the dynamics among and between various community groups will need to be addressed if positive community intention to participate in ecotourism is to be encouraged.
