Description:
How much is a wildflower worth? Inspired by ''The worth of a songbird'' by Funtowicz and Ravetz [Funtowicz, S.O., Ravetz, J.R., 1994. The worth of a songbird: ecological economics as a post-normal science. Ecological Economics 10, 197-207] we use the value of a wildflower as symbol of the complexity of evaluating environmental qualities and risks. We critically discuss the application of cost-benefit analysis in evaluating environmental impacts of adoption of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). We argue that cost-benefit analysis should be supplemented with other methods, such as processes for assessing uncertainty, accommodation of scientific disagreements, and integration of stakeholders' interests and perspectives. A more inclusive perspective is to develop precautionary approaches that recognize the multidimensional nature of environmental qualities and risks, such as irreplaceability, irreversibility, uncertainty and complexity. Precautionary approaches can contribute to develop a stronger environmental responsibility within the framework of rational self-interest.

Book Description
Using a question-and-answer format, this book makes clear how to take advantage of the laws designed to secure the rights of racial minorities. Individual chapters explain the federal civil laws and procedures protecting the rights of racial minorities in voting, employment, education, housing, public accommodations, federally assisted programs, and jury selection and trials. Relevant criminal statutes and the use of race-conscious remedies are covered as well.
The initial basis for the rights of racial minorities was provided by three constitutional amendments adopted following the Civil War during the period of Reconstruction: the Thirteenth Amendment, which outlaws slavery and involuntary servitude; the Fourteenth Amendment, which prohibits states from denying to any person "equal protection of the laws"; and the Fifteenth Amendment, which prohibits denial or abridgment of the right to vote.
Each of the Reconstruction amendments authorized Congress to enforce the amendments "by appropriate legislation." Congress has done so repeatedly. The most important of the Reconstruction laws were the Civil Rights Act of 1866, the Civil Rights Act of 1871, and the Civil Rights Act of 1875, which was declared unconstitutional in 1883. In response to the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, Congress enacted and amended a number of modern civil rights acts including the Civil Rights Act of 1964; the Voting Rights Act of 1965, amended in 1970, 1975, and 1982; and the Fair Housing Act of 1968 to ensure equality and eradicate the continuing effects of past discrimination accumulated over more than two centuries. The challenge to the nation remains to bring reality to the declared principle that "all persons are created equal."

Book Description
The patterns on the shells of tropical sea snails are not only compellingly beautiful but also tell a tale of biological development. The decorative patterns are records of their own genesis, which follows laws like those of dune formation or the spread of a flu epidemic. Hans Meinhardt has analyzed the dynamical processes that form these patterns and retraced them faithfully in computer simulations. His book is exciting not only for the astonishing scientific knowledge it reveals but also for its fascinating pictures. An accompanying CD-ROM with the corresponding algorithms offers wide scope to those who wish to try their hand at simulating and varying the patterns.

Excellent reading.......2006-01-05
I've been collecting shells for many years but i never thought of the complexity and perfection of their patterns! This book describes in a simple way the mechanisms that produce the surface decorations of shells. It takes reader in a fascinating trip in a world of algorithmic shapes and colors!
Sea Shell Math.......2002-06-03
This book describes, using a computer, The geometry involved in the building of seashells and in particular the surface features. It shows the how and why of surface decorations found on several species of Mollusks. This is probably the only book to treat this subject and do so extensively expertly and comprahensively.
very thought provoking and visually stimulating.......2000-07-26
I came across this book at the Rhode Island School of Design library. As an artist I found it surprising that what I had considered to be just a beautiful pattern was actually an imprint of the pressure and movement of the waves upon the seashell. This insight was very thought provoking for me. Perhaps to biologists this is a normal and natural thing - but for an artist this kind of scientific approach with beautifully illustrated pages is a deeply moving experience. This book will definitely make you think twice about the objects that you take for granted - whether it's visually or scientifically. I strongly recommend this book for those who like intellectual challenges and who like to look at the world with fresh new eyes.

Well organized information covers topics such as the formation and history of the canyon as well as the composition of the rocks. Unique book design looks like signs posted with thumbtacks on top of identical background photographs. Then it has some photo on top of the signs that add to the three dimensional look. Most of the photos are exceptional. Contains glossary, index, and a list of two web sites. Karen Woodworth Roman, Children's Science Book Review

Book Description
Twenty-seven year old Tyler LePerdu has written his life story for you, an absurd and irrepressible account of his attempt to find true love, despite an inability to love anyone. A self-proclaimed narcissist, he embraces his LA-based, celebrity-riddled past to arrive at a moment of self-discovery involving a supermodel, a psychologist and a profound misunderstanding.
The Autobiography of a Narcissist is an edgy piece of humor, a psychological case study and commentary on our inescapable culture of narcissism.
Customer Reviews:
My sense of humor despised this book.......2007-07-23
The author, whose first attempt at a novel this was, is probably better suited to short story or column writing. The story seems to lack any coherence over the course of turned pages. You see the main character doing his life, and turning out to be completely and utterly out of his mind, and yes, being colossally annoying, but the book reads more like a series of topically related columns than it does a novel. Moreover, the remarkable sense of humor touted by the other reviewers of this book and the book jacket itself is absolutely missing. I had one moment when I thought to myself about a third of the way through the book (after waiting to figure out just what the point of the story was) that maybe I had seen a flash of really brilliant hilarity and that I had just been missing the author's sense of humor. No, no. It was a fluke and the guy isn't funny. Save yourself the dough on buying this one. If you really want to be annoyed, borrow this from a sucker who paid for it, or find it at the library. Better yet, read something like Mary Roach's Stiff for a really good laugh.
EXCEPTION WRITING - A MUST READ!.......2006-04-11
The Autobiography of a Narcissist
Jonathan Foster
Early Morning Press
1731 Brown Street, Napa, Ca 94559
Genre: Literary Fiction
ISBN: 159113871X[...]
In this "fictional" autobiography, twenty-seven year old Tyler LePerdu shares his journal with us-a journal begun at the suggestion of his mandatory-to-receive-his-inheritance therapist, Jean, which tells us `maybe' this man has a problem.
And, of course, such a journal can't help but be somewhat narcissistic (an excessive interest in oneself and one's physical appearance) as it reflects one man's perspective on life based on his experience and observations. Tyler's focus on his appearance and that of others-the "Beautiful Class"-certainly is part of his problem and what does that say of our culture in general? Stephen King's thoughts about sanity from Danse Macabre are: "we are all insane . . . just to different degrees."
So, what is the heart of Tyler's problem as he searches for Love? . . . to Love and be Loved, which he knows instinctively exists, though he has not experienced it. He shares with us that at an early age he shut down his emotions after hearing his beautiful mother slam her bedroom door so as not to hear him crying. From that night, Tyler was at odds with his insensitive, socially-active, money-controlling mother, somewhat reminiscent of Harold and Maude, though Tyler was not obsessive about death . . . he was obsessive about appearances.
He believes that he is in Love with Susanna, an exceptional beauty, but is unable to tell her. The ending of this Love is the beginning of Tyler's reconnection with reality and his emotions.
Here are three excerpts which I feel are central to the story and which illustrate the author's style and gift.
First excerpt is from page 56:
I submit to you, my dear reader, that now more than ever mankind hungers for the guidance of Beautiful Class! In this rapidly changing world where a scientific theory can be unveiled, awarded and then disproved in the same week; a world where new computers are obsolete before they're taken from the shelf; a world where street lingo changes by the hour and where the imprisonment of our favorite movie star can leave us curiously unsettled, mankind needs the stability that a beautiful face can bestow. We need a cultural continuity that can only be provided by someone tall and tan and young and lovely. You see, in the modern world, beauty is no longer merely an aesthetic preference; it has developed into a source of cultural security that is more comforting than any mother's arms, more calming than any known antidepressant, and more solid than the planet Earth itself!
Second excerpt is from page 57:Before I launch into the story of our second meeting, however, let me remind you that by the time she (Susanna) walked into my life, I was so far differentiated from the common experience that I'd begun to accept that a life of solitude was my destiny. I'd realized at a very young age that mine was a very different road in life. Mine was a road less traveled by people. Rather, a road with virtually no other travelers on it . . . .
I'm sure this must sound to you like a very sad existence, that of all the roads to be traveling on, mine is the road most lonesome. It is. The only real way to survive it is by coming to a complete and honest acceptance of solitude. It requires courage and determination. It requires that one avoid the pitfalls of self-doubt and its red-headed stepchild, depression; that one keep a watchful eye on Emotion's clever and never-ending little shelf game; that one maintain strict standards of self-worth by being very selective about whom one gets too friendly with. These things I have long since achieved. I have always known that my life was meant to be lived by myself. Still, I have always secretly held a hope that one day I would discover someone just like me standing in the middle of my path. A bird of my own feather. A Frick to my Frack. Someone in whom I would see the same seeing of the same someone in me. But much more than holding hope, I was determined, if only for my desire to find Love. I knew that I needed to find that rare someone who was programmed with my same intuitive wiring to accept the obvious "what" and move on to ask the "why" of Love.
Third excerpt is from page 69:
"How the hell can you find something of your own in someone else?"
"By listening," she said. "By truly listening with the whole of your heart. Not just hearing the words and sounds coming from the person you wish to Love. Not by seeing their expressions and gestures, and then in turn, responding appropriately. Not even by respect for their individuality or admiration for their special qualities or acknowledgment of their overall importance. No. By listening. Listening. Listening to the entirety of their lives with the unbridled curiosity of a small child. And in the end, that is precisely what Love is: Listening."
As for style, Jonathan Foster knows how to set the hook . . . with the unexpected and a laugh, and I quote from the opening paragraph:
"My penis is quite good looking, really. It has a classic shape, is of healthy length and is boldly circumcised as though much too proud to hide its true form beneath a shroud of foreskin. Its girth is substantial and of admirable consistence for all of its length. In its disinterested state, it hangs down with perfect symmetry between my thighs, most notably when I stand with my feet eight to thirteen inches apart, knees slightly bent. When interested, it . . ."
He plays his catch and pulls you in with his rich, titillating vocabulary, expert language skills, a casual, intimate tone and memorable metaphors. Then, he brings you full circle to close with . . .
"My entire understanding of my own manhood has evolved. And though I feel a tinge of sadness when I say it, I know now that whether flaccid or erect, admired or unobserved, in truth, sometimes a penis is just a penis."
I read a lot of books, and they all have something to offer. But, what a "treat" when you open a new book and the author just grabs you and doesn't let go. Jonathan Foster is one such author. I truly envy his gift and language skills.
Whether or not you like egocentric, psychological-case-study, journal-type stories, you might enjoy this book just for the pleasure of experiencing good craftsmanship . . . for writing is indeed a craft.
As it says on the back cover, Jonathan Foster is a screenwriter and playwright living in Napa, CA. "The Autobiography of a Narcissist" is his first novel, and I'm certain it won't be his last. It is of superior quality and will be the third novel included in my "In Search of Excellence POD Book List."

incredibly fun book with an incredibly annoying character.......2006-03-20
Tyler is the type of guy that most people want nothing to do with, yet Autobiography of a Narcissist is so funny and well written that you find yourself actually caring what happens next. Jonathan Foster has created such a real voice for Tyler that I find myself thinking that maybe I would find the author as annoying as the book's main character (that is a compliment to the author by the way).
This is the kind of book you want to have if you're home sick in bed or have a long plane trip ahead of you. It makes you laugh and it keeps you entertained, even as you're wondering why in the world you are still reading about this guy who is so self-absorbed you just want to whack him upside the head.
Book Description
A dramatic countdown of the final months of World War II in Europe, The Last 100 Days brings to life the waning power and the ultimate submission of the Third Reich. To reconstruct the tumultuous hundred days between Yalta and the fall of Berlin, John Toland traveled more than 100,000 miles in twenty-one countries and interviewed more than six hundred people—from Hitler’s personal chauffeur to Generals von Manteuffel, Wenck, and Heinrici; from underground leaders to diplomats; from top Allied field commanders to brave young GIs. Toland adeptly weaves together these interviews using research from thousands of primary sources.
When it was first published, The Last 100 Days made history, revealing after-action reports, staff journals, and top-secret messages and personal documents previously unavailable to historians. Since that time, it has come to be regarded as one of the greatest historical narratives of the twentieth century.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book by Excellent Writer.......2007-06-03
The Last 100 Days is a monumental historical work. In it the author pieces together the story of the fall of the Third Reich at the end of the Second World War in Europe.
Although the book is generally described as a work of "popular history" it is more than that. It is in fact a work of history that has itself now become a part of the history of World War II. (Too many authors to count have relied upon this book in writing their own books on a variety of matters covering this period of the war.)
This is because in preparation for writing the book the author did much more than just review the then current literature on the subject by "real" historians (often written in a mind-numbingly boring and pedantic style, not to mention based on government records or reports by people who were not even directly involved in what they are reporting on), summarize it, and then rewrite it in a popular style. Instead, the author bases his book on (a) hundreds of personal interviews with persons actually participating in the acts described and (b) thousands of other primary sources, such as journals, monographs, and diaries.
From this vast treasure trove of information, the author brilliantly sifts through it to create a masterpiece. In so doing he discusses the end of the war in Europe on many different levels (e.g., politicians, generals, NCOs, front-line soldiers, and civilians) from many different vantage points (e.g., American, German, Russian, British, resistance).
The perspective of the last 100 days was also not chosen simply because it sounds good as a title. The significance of the last 100 days is that the beginning of this period (i.e., the first day of the last one hundred days) is roughly the time that both the American, British, etc., allies, coming from the West, and the Soviet forces, coming from the East, first breached the frontiers of the Fatherland, i.e., the pre-war boundaries of Germany. The Last 100 Days is thus an account of the counter-invasion and destruction of Germany against overwhelming forces of men and materiel that is told in an engaging, absorbing, thoughtful, and informative manner.
A must-read for anyone interested in the histories of Europe, Germany, or the Second World War.
The Best Book On WWII.......2007-03-11
I am an avid reader of WWII history and must say that this is without a doubt the best book I have read on the period. This book manages to read like a novel in the majestic way in which it is written and at the same time it makes the war feel personal; the people throughout the pages are more than names, they are lives, maybe ones that could have been your own. Of all the books I have read on war this is the only one that has forced me to stop reading because some of the material in it actually made me want to cry, is this is not literature at its best, then I don't know what is.
In the end I must say that this is not only a classic read on WWII history but on the history of War itself and the major part it plays on the human experience. Trust me, you can't go wrong with this book; this is as close as you will get to feeling like you were in the middle of WWII.
Gripping Historical Narrative.......2005-12-06
This is a gripping look at the final months of World War II in Europe. Author John Toland covers many angles as the Allied armies advanced into Germany and squeezed what remained of the Nazi Empire. The author rotates between subjects, and keeps the reader's interest with vivid descriptions and many personal accounts of events. Readers learn of Yalta and the politics of Churchill, Stalin, Roosevelt (and then Truman), and note the seeds of the coming Cold War. We get a bird's eye view from inside the Fuhrer's bunker as his brutal empire collapsed. We also read about atrocities against both prisoners and civilians, hear of the plight of refugees, and learn about the views from the top Allied commanders in the west (Eisenhower, Montgomery, Patton, Bradley, etc.).
John Toland (1912-2004) was a master story teller, although not an academically trained historian. Judging by the sales figures, most readers seem to prefer his readable and well-researched approach. This is a vivid and gripping narrative.
100 days, 100 stars.......2005-04-05
With all due respect to others who write about WWII, it would be difficult to find anyone better.
I would never have thought it possible to read a book that puts you "there" during the last 100 days.
The Chicago Tribune says it very well "Fascinating ... the narrative shifts from scene to intimate scene of every conference room... from liberated camp to Hitler's underground bunker... to GI's storming the railroad bridges across the Rhine... Toland has woven the tapestry of history."
If you read and enjoy WWII, this book is a MUST.
Tapestry of a hundred critical days........2004-12-11
My first contact with Mr. Toland's writings was "Gods of War" and found it a great WWII novel. At that time I wasn't aware Mr. Toland was a professional historian on war themes. Researching in Amazon, for bibliography on WWII I was delighted to find out Mr. Toland's works.
In "The Last 100 Days" he collects hundreds of testimonies from the actors of this last war drama, ranging from State Heads to simple privates and fleeing civilians.
Mr. Toland blends all of them in an overwhelming and coherent picture. His prose is entertaining and informative. The reader has the sensation of "being there" and will be presented with vignettes of very different kind.
It is amazing how in the same book, without losing coherence, you are able to witness Hitler's maddening last days and Yalta Conference's intimacies vis-à-vis with the story of two young Poles running to freedom.
With great patience and skill Mr. Toland sew a huge tapestry showing these momentous Last Days.
A great stuff to read for historians, students or casual readers. Enjoy!!!.

In the first in-depth study of the Jewish population of Germany between the two world wars, Michael Brenner describes a people in the midst of redefining themselves. He shows how the Weimar Jews, participating but not assimilating in German society, created new forms of German-Jewish literature, music, fine art, education, and scholarship by dressing Jewish traditions in the garb of modern forms of cultural expression.

A great adventure!.......2006-06-29
Butch has a wonderful way with words that brings you right into the story. As you read, it is like you are there with him. For years I have heard his stories from my sister, Deb Dirksen, mentioned in his book, and now it is wonderful to be able to read them. His insights into Yellowstone are priceless and you finish the book with a greater love for this jewel of our country. I hope more people read the book and join the cause to save our nations national parks.
A Yellowstone Must Read!.......2006-02-12
Orville Bach has done an excellent job describing the beauty and wonders of Yellowstone; an up-close an personal view based upon over 30 years of back-coutry hiking, canoeing, and all kinds of "natural" adventures. This book was my constant companion during a recent 5-day bought with the flu - I couldn't put it down - wanting to see what adventures and sites were part of the next chapter! Mr. Bach takes the reader on an intimate journey of the Yellowstone backcountry; animal encounters, wacky weather, adventures with friends. The book was very readable and describes a wide variety of natural experiences. I highly recommend this book - I can't wait to go see Yellowstone for myself! I hope Mr. Bach considers a second book in the series.
A Fantastic Book!.......2006-02-05
I would have given this book ten stars! Orville E. Bach Jr. gives the reader an incredible perspective of the park. As a seasonal park ranger for 31 years, he's had the opportunity to experience first hand the many beautiful landscapes and unique thermal features that make Yellowstone such a precious wilderness area. I couldn't put the book down! I felt like I was hiking and paddling along side him during his many adventures. I would fly out to Yellowstone tomorrow if given the chance. It's a great book.
Make visions of "Yellowstone" dance in my head!.......2005-09-13
Having just returned from a 3-week trip to Yellowstone and surrounding back-country, I ordered Mr. Bach's book to continue my trip of a lifetime. Combined with my own love of the Rocky's and vivid memories, reading "Tracking the Spirit of Yellowstone" is extending my vacation. I tried not to read it all at once so I can make it last longer! Bach's easy style of writing takes the reader along on his amazing adventures. For those of you who have not been beyond the 'driving tour' of Yellowstone, some of these may seem far-fetched. Having been there, every trip into the backcountry presents a new and unforgettable adventure! Mr. Bach, you are living my dream, and I thank you for sharing it in such an enjoyable collection of stories! Won't you write more?
True Wilderness Adventures in Yellowstone.......2005-07-25
This book is a collection of short essays about the author's experiences in wilderness areas, mostly Yellowstone National Park. The exciting, exhilarating, hilarious, and frequently frightening stories will leave you wanting more as you move from chapter to chapter and you will end up wondering if the author has nine lives! It's too bad the early Yellowstone explorers aren't around to swap stories with Bach; I think he would have fit right in. After reading this book, I dusted off my copy of his guidebook, "Exploring the Yellowstone Backcountry" and started planning some trips of my own!

Customer Reviews:
the Alphabet never looked so good.......2004-11-16
Found this book by accident, with a search of Yellowstone books for children. I just received it...and LOVE IT...
Love the small size, for small hands, and the simple text that 'walks' you through the park.
Now,
I just want one bigger, for my hands....
and I would LOVE to see more of the author's husband's illustrations. He did the front cover - and I was hoping to see more of his work inside.
But...that being said -- the photographs inside are crisp and sharp. Highlighting many of my favorites...
and wanting me to see more.
Page spreads are gorgeous.
Thanks for compiling this....."why didn't I think of it"...

A novel look at Yellowstone.......1999-05-21
This is a departure from the many books that focus on Yellowstone's natural history. Meyer, instead, traces the park's human history and the development of images that first captured the public's attention and led to establishment of the first national park. Most of the book is quite scholarly and analytical, gaining momentum when Meyer attempts to delve into the minds of the first explorers to record and stand in amazement at Yellowstone's wonders. Illustrated with many early drawings of the park, The Spirit of Yellowstone is not exactly light reading, but is a must for any serious student of the park.
