Book Description
For anyone interested in the tiny building blocks of our universe, Matt Tweed-the illustrator of Useful Mathematical & Physical Formulae-offers a fascinating introduction to the complex and beautiful world of the elements. Tweed reveals the principal properties and interactions of substances familiar (carbon, oxygen, water) and unfamiliar (rare earth elements and subatomic particles). He explains atomic bonding, radioactivity, and DNA, and presents alternative ways of visualizing the periodic table, as well as a succinct synthesis of the Big Bang. Scientists and laymen alike will be entranced.
Customer Reviews:
Good, but not useful.......2007-05-07
The book very briefly lists our current knowledge of the atomic world.
The issue I have is that for those who are even vaguely familiar with the subject already, the book provides no more knowledge. For those who are not familiar, they would albeit get to know about the terms used in Physics, but would gain no appreciation or true understanding of it. (In the sense that you learn that the Earth is round, but appreciating this fact requires understanding how mankind learned that, and what kind of surprise it was for them to learn this.)
Feynman once asked his father why the ball on the top of his toy truck moves backwards (with respect to the truck) if he pushes the truck forward. His father answered that nobody knows! He could have said that it is because of inertia blah blah. But that does not answer the question, it only gives new terminology to ask the same question all over again (what is inertia).
By telling Feynman that the answer is not known, his father developed his curiosity and simultaneously prevented him from developing biases.
This book gives you all the answers without making you appreciate how all that came about. Its doing exactly the opposite of what Feynman's father did to him.
By the way: I have read a few other books from the Wooden Books series. I usually love them.
Totally original.......2004-05-25
This is a really fun book. It successfully manages to get across the massive amount of weirdness down in the smaller end of things. My sons love it. Some of the pictures are the best I've seen anywhere. A little bit of a pity it didn't go into bond angles and so organic chemistry (lack of space I guess), and, as another reviewer has noted, there are some weak places ... but I just love the feel of the book, the way the subjects have been handled, and, unlike so many 'popular' chemistry books, this one at least has a beautifully designed periodic table at the back! Really highly recommended for kids or for adults who need their science refreshing.
Should have had a chemist review your manuscript........2004-01-20
This is a "cute" book for its' size and illustrations. Not especially informative, but I suppose it wasn't meant to be.
However, it should not make gross mistatements such as found on page 6: ie., Isotopes of the same element can have radically diverse chemical properties.
Chemical properties of an element are the result of the electronic arrangement of its' orbiting electrons. All isotopes of a particular element have the same orbiting electron arrangement, thus the same chemical properties.
The isotopes of a given element have different masses due to the different number of neutrons in their nuclei. For this reason, physical methods are used to separate the various isotopes of a given element.
A Wonderful Little Book!.......2003-06-30
Tiny and almost like a child's book, this puppy helped me catch up with all the new stuff that's been going on in the world of physics since I took the subject in high school decades ago. Only slightly larger than a CD jewel case and only 58 pages - and half of those are filled with diagrams - it still took me the better part of my Sunday morning to read and comprehend it. I was particularly impressed with the last page: a graphic representation of 36 different electron orbitals. I also liked the alternatives to the periodic tables that he offers. And his depiction of the universe since the Big Bang is enlightening. I finished the book amazed at how much of everything is nothing.
The author also has added a sense of playfulness to the diagrams (and occasionally, the text) that helps to keep this subject from turning into the snoozer it traditionally is. Now I know why all those nerdy, high-end mathematician-types are so passionate about their work!
If you take mass transit to work, this is an excellent book for you.

Book Description
The experimental and theoretical investigation of nuclei far from the valley of beta-stability is the main subject of modern nuclear structure research. Although the most successful nuclear structure models are purely phenomenological, they nevertheless exploit basic properties of QCD at low energies. This book focuses on the current efforts to bridge the gap between phenomenology and the principles derived from QCD using the extended density functional approach which is based on the successful DFT methods to tackle similarly complex interacting systems in molecular and condensed matter physics. Conceived as a series of pedagogical lectures, this volume addresses researchers in the field as well as postgraduate students and non-specialized scientists from related areas who seek a high-level but accessible introduction to the subject.

Customer Reviews:
This Book Has What I Look For Most in a Novel.......2000-10-28
This book is a combination of what I look for most in a novel: It's a laugh-out-loud riot, but the characters have real soul and face plenty of real-life obstacles as they attract and repel each other in a very believable way. Plus, being from Philly, I really appreciated how the book conveyed the city's spirit.
Didn't want UGLY COOKIES to end.......2000-10-24
I picked up this book because I liked the title. Little did I know that I would read the book in one sitting. I loved this book and the characters and their trials and tribulations. Even though they were quirky, they seemed real to me. I could identify with Bridget and her relationship with Carson. The authors didn't gloss over the differences between men and women. Also, it's rare to find a book that deals with senior citizens in such a compassionate way. I will recommend this book to people of all ages. At last, something I can share with my boyfriend and my mother.
A Hilarious but Serious Novel.......2000-10-09
Ugly Cookies is a hilarious romp through a maze of interconnecting relationships in which lifestyles, belief systems, generational expectations and commitments of career and love are challenged on many levels. The bizarre circumstances in which this is played out in ashrams, boardrooms, warehouses, market places and coffeehouses is humorous, yet the novel has a serious undertone throughout. The power of family influence to nurture or destroy all human relationships is dramatized through three generations.
Like a good batch, I finished it in one sitting.......2000-08-14
This was a wonderful book to take on an overseas business trip. I think the people around me wanted to know waht the chuckles were all about. The title is the best, I don't know if I make ugly cookies 'cuz I only eat the dough.
Ugly Cookies: A Delicious Love Story.......2000-08-14
I knew Joy Stocke and Fran Metzman -- who both published my last book of poetry -- were writing a novel. But I had NO IDEA what to expect. Naturally, since they are both witty and smart and eclectic, they have written a witty and smart and eclectic book, and it's GREAT, guys!! I read it straight through, finished it last night at 5AM. Your characters jumped into my brain immediately and became people to me; I cared about their crises and comic disasters. This book could be called LOVE AND WORK, for its intelligent, sensitive -- and humorous -- exploration of both topics. Think of Marge Piercy's problem novels grafted to some hip, hilarious contemporary TV series with a cadre of outrageous and memorable characters and each line of dialog so funny it takes your breath away, like a punch in the stomach, but a GOOD, IRONIC PUNCH, that's UGLY COOKIES. I see an UGLY COOKIES sequel -- another book, a T-shirt, a TV series, a Hollywood movie, a calendar, a cook-book, AND a cookie chain franchise that will instantly rival Famous Amos and Mrs. What's-Her-Name-I've already forgotten. Hey, Fran and Joy, Tradmark and Brand-Name it quick!! Hop on it!! UGLY IS BEAUTIFUL!!
Book Description
A Question of Honor is the gripping, little-known, and brilliantly told story of the scores of Polish fighter pilots who helped save England during the Battle of Britain and of their stunning betrayal by the United States and England at the end of World War II.
Centering on five pilots of the renowned Kosciuszko Squadron, the authors show how the fliers, driven by their passionate desire to liberate their homeland, came to be counted among the most heroic and successful fighter pilots of World War II. Drawing on the Kosciuszko Squadron’s unofficial diary–filled with the fliers’ personal experiences in combat–and on letters, interviews, memoirs, histories, and photographs, the authors bring the men and battles of the squadron vividly to life. We follow the principal characters from their training before the war, through their hair-raising escape from Poland to France and then, after the fall of France, to Britain. We see how, first treated with disdain by the RAF, the Polish pilots played a crucial role during the Battle of Britain, where their daredevil skill in engaging German Messerschmitts in close and deadly combat while protecting the planes in their own groups soon made them legendary. And we learn what happened to them after the war, when their country was abandoned and handed over to the Soviet Union.
A Question of Honor also gives us a revelatory history of Poland during World War II and of the many thousands in the Polish armed forces who fought with the Allies. It tells of the country’s unending struggle against both Hitler and Stalin, its long battle for independence, and the tragic collapse of that dream in the “peace” that followed. Powerful, moving, deeply involving, A Question of Honor is an important addition to the literature of World War II.
Customer Reviews:
Honor Richly Deserved.......2007-10-12
The story of the Kozciuszko Squadron is important on so many levels it is difficult to know where to start. Poland fought WW2 from the first day to the last, on every front in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Ten million Poles perished and, in the end, those who survived were betrayed by their own allies. Yet here we have a story of heroes, brave men who battled almost insurmountable odds, with only one objective in mind - to get back into the fight and defeat history's greatest tyrant. It is a vital story, told by Olson and Cloud with the grace, style and precision it deserves. When you finish this you will definitely want to know more about the courage and resilience of Poles during the war and I highly recommend, Night of Flames: A Novel of World War II
Forgotten heroes and victims of WW2.......2007-05-16
Very important and critical book. Can be compare to Richard C.Lukas "Forgotten Holocaust". Should absolutely be translated into other european languages, especially french and german!
Short and long-term memories by everyone.......2007-02-02
It is amazing how Winston Churchill was mad at Neville Chamberlain for selling out Czechoslovakia and yet, he did the very same thing with Poland. It is also amazing how naive Churchill and Roosvelt were about the history of Poland and the Russian occupation of Poland during the reign of Catherine the Great and the Russian Tsars. Furthermore, both men naive about Stalin would have a free Poland despite the fact that the Poles and the various British and American officials reported the many heinous acts that were committed by the Russians when the Russians occupied half of Poland in 1939.
For there part, the Poles did not seem to have a good memory about how the U.S. and Britain failed to come to Poland's rescue when it was being divide up several times. The Poles did not seem to understand American and British history on those two countries expanding their terrorities at the expense of the native populations, so the Western powers were no better when it comes to respecting other people's rights. After what happen to Czechosolovakia in 1938, and Poland in 1939, you would think the Poles would not trust the British again.
I am amaze that the Poles had one of the best intelligence and resistance movements in the world apart from the Russian and Yugoslavia resistance movements. It is amazing the Poles create one so quickly and that their intelligence system extend into Hungary and Romania. It is also amazing that they were smuggling people and goods in and out of Poland by land, sea, and air. It downright astounding that the Poles like the Irish maintain their culture under foreign occupation despite various attempts to destroy it. Genocide of any kind occur long before the Nazis came into existence, and it keeps on occuring long after the Nazis Party was destroy.
They could had a few more aerial combat stories about the Polish fighter squadrons from 1943-1945 especially about the Kosciuszko Squadron and the other 12 Polish fighter squadrons.
The way the author was describing how the Germans were killing the Poles indiscriminately and randomly in the city of Warsaw sounds alot like our towns in California, Kansas, and other American states during the Old West era and during the Prohibition Era of the 1920s and 30s. People in those time periods were killing each other for no logical reason at all. It is like our country today where citizens and criminals particulary street gangs are killing people for no reason at all.
True Honor.......2006-12-07
The accounts of Polish Air Force contributions in the Battle of Britain are absolutely gripping. I could not put this book down. The authors describe the brilliant tactics of Polish pilots very well, going beyond the statistics of their unparalleled performance in the Battle of Britain and bringing us to the front seat of the action. It was so excellently researched, well written and exciting. The story includes much history of the entire war from Poland's perspective, including the betrayal by Roosevelt and Churchill toward the war's end. I recently read Norman Davies Rising '44 about the Warsaw uprising in 1944, which was an excellent book, but it left me hungering to know more specifics about the courageous Poles who fought in WWII. A Question of Honor went very far in satisfying that desire.
Anyone who is Polish should read this book and be very, very proud of your country's contributions to the allied cause. The book highlights the incredible treachery of Stalin and mean gloating of Molotov, and the lies told by Churchill and Roosevelt to American and UK citizens, apparently to try to foster allied unity (and in Roosevelt's case to garner the vote of 6 million US Poles). The book also discusses Zegota and other Polish/Jewish efforts to save Jews from the Nazis. Poland was the only country in WWII where the Nazis officially made hiding Jews punishable by death. Zegota, which saved approximately 75,000 Jews by the war's end, was commemorated as "righteous among nations" by Yad Vashem in 1963.
A Treasure for Avaition and History Buffs. A Great as well as an Emotional Read!! .......2006-04-27
Thank you Lynn Olson and Stanley Cloud for a clearly written and insightful book about the "Forgotten Heroes of WWII." The fearless and talented Polish pilots of the 303rd, that downed more German aircraft then any other squadron during the Battle of Britain, was wonderfully researched and truthfully told.
Not only do Olson and Cloud reveal facts about the aviators, but the connection to the American founder of the 303rd Kosciusko squadron, Merian Cooper, was detailed as well. I have had the honor of speaking with American pilots who flew with Witold Lokuciewski, Jan Zumbach, and Witold Urbanowicz and they all confirmed that they and their colleagues were the most talented pilots they have ever seen. These three and many other's harrowing personal stories have been told in the book. There are chapters that also describe the political situation regarding Poland and the terrors inflicted upon the soldiers and citizens by Russia and Nazi Germany (including a detailed account of the Katyn massacre).
Everyone who is interested in the WWII as well as American history should read this book.

Book Description
Like a great dynasty that falls to ruin and is eventually remembered more for its faults than its feats, Arab nationalism is remembered mostly for its humiliating rout in the 1967 Six Day War, for inter-Arab divisions, and for words and actions distinguished by their meagerness. But people tend to forget the majesty that Arab nationalism once was. In this elegantly narrated and richly documented book, Adeed Dawisha brings this majesty to life through a sweeping historical account of its dramatic rise and fall.
Dawisha argues that Arab nationalism--which, he says, was inspired by nineteenth-century German Romantic nationalism--really took root after World War I and not in the nineteenth century, as many believe, and that it blossomed only in the 1950s and 1960s under the charismatic leadership of Egypt's Gamal 'Abd al-Nasir. He traces the ideology's passage from the collapse of the Ottoman Empire through its triumphant ascendancy in the late 1950s with the unity of Egypt and Syria and with the nationalist revolution of Iraq, to the mortal blow it received in the 1967 Arab defeat by Israel, and its eventual eclipse. Dawisha criticizes the common failure to distinguish between the broader, cultural phenomenon of "Arabism" and the political, secular desire for a united Arab state that defined Arab nationalism. In recent decades competitive ideologies--not least, Islamic militancy--have inexorably supplanted the latter, he contends.
Dawisha, who grew up in Iraq during the heyday of Arab nationalism, infuses his work with rare personal insight and extraordinary historical breadth. In addition to Western sources, he draws on an unprecedented wealth of Arab political memoirs and studies to tell the fascinating story of one of the most colorful and significant periods of the contemporary Arab world. In doing so, he also gives us the means to more fully understand trends in the region today.
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant.......2004-10-15
Mr. Seraj, for some warped reason, perceived this book as an attack on arab nationalism, when in fact Dawisha's work reads as a straight history. Dr. Dawisha was simply stating a factual historical truth: "Arab nationalism", an abstract concept at best, rose fitfully, then faltered and died. Why? because it had no historical, cultural, emotive, or even linguistic bases. It was essentially contrived (and I would argue, calqued along the lines of the european language-based nationalisms that labled people based on the languages they spoke.) It sought to impute a certain identity on people who had for centuries thought of themselves as nothing but Muslims, Jews, Assyrians, Chaldaeans, Maronites, Druze, etc.. and nothing else! This is not bias, this is the plain painful truth Mr. Seraj. Be a man, accept it, and move on. Arabs and Arab nationalism are a mere mirage, an abstract concept, and an obsolete ideology (though it is still upheld by a motely senile half-witted academics who keep irresolute dreamers like Mr. Seraj and their warped ideas alive.)
I would NOT recommend it really!.......2004-06-05
I have read a couple of books on Arab Nationalism and some that are in some way related to Arab nationalism, in particular Aburish's. I find this book so confusing and unintresting. In addition to the weird and confusing diction the author uses, it is a little biased - in my opinion. whether wittingly or unwittingly the author is attacking Arab Nationalism even even in conditions which require that he be otherwise.
In a word, I would not recommend this book.
