Book Description
Traditionally, social theorists in the West have structured models of state social control according to the tenet that socialization is accomplished by means of external controls on behavior: undesirable actions are punished and desirable actions result either in material reward or a simple respite from the oppressive attentions of an authoritarian state. In this volume, the author presents the tradition of law in China as an exception to the Western model of social control. The Confucian bureaucracy that has long structured Chinese social life melded almost seamlessly with the Maoist revolutionary agenda to produce a culture in which collectivism and an internalized adherence to social law are, in some respects, congenital features of Chinese social consciousness. Through her investigation of the Maoist concept of revolutionary justice and the tradition of conformist acculturation in China, the author constructs a fascinating counterpoint to traditional Western arguments about social control.
Book Description
The Complete Encyclopedia of Trees and Shrubs gives comprehensive descriptions to satisfy any arborist. Focusing on vegetation that is extraordinary for its adaptational ability, wild beauty, or unique evolutionary position, this is an excellent resource. The book is divided into three sections: trees and shrubs looked at in general terms; arranged in alphabetical order according to genus; and then depicted in numerous color illustrations, showing leaf and flower shapes, growth habits, and structures. Over 1400 photographs are featured.

Very Good Reference Material.......2006-12-04
I'm a landscape contractor and have a lot of material available to me and have somewhat of a small library of encyclopedias, reference how-to books, etc. Ordered this book not knowing if I would get just another repeat of what I already have. This is one book I will return to quite often. Towards the front of the book will outline how the book works. The index in back is alphabetized with Latin nomenclature. Some common names are included too. If you want to look up Maples, you will find it under Maple, but will refer you to Acer and page #. Each genus entry gives you some info about the species over all and some 'cultivation'. Then gives you more specifics about each species/ variety alphabetically. First the Latin name then common name. Then includes range, size of the tree or shrub, characteristics, subspecies info, and zone tolerance ranges. There are a lot of very good photos that accompany each entry as well. Now, this is not 'Complete' in that it lists every tree/ shrub out there. That's unrealistic in any volume. But it is a very outstanding and 'Complete' in what it does cover - and it covers alot. I would recommend this encyclopedia be included in your library of reference material.
trees and shrub encyclopedia.......2005-06-15
i have found this bood to be an excellent resource for all types of trees and shrubs. it has both common and scientific plant names and is loaded with pictures and comprehensive descriptions. the cultivation tips have been very useful and i would highly recommend this book to anyone!
Trees and Shrubs.......2004-12-02
The book has great pictures and covers any plant you could ever think of but is lacking in its content. Do the math, 8,500 trees and shrubs covered in 815 pages. That does not leave much room for a complete description. It is a very attractive book to look at, but is not for the serious landscaper or nurserymen.

Book Description
Whether focusing on deadheading or disbudding techniques to produce abundant flowers, cutting back in preparation for winter, clipping fruit trees for increased yield, or shaping topiaries, this book spells out each lesson in detail. The drawings demonstrate the correct approaches to this essential process, and color photographs display precisely pruned plants.

Pruning Bible.......2006-07-22
I have a large library on Gardening and design and this is the book I turn to with all my pruning questions. I cant say I agree with the previous reviewer. Whether novice or experienced I think there is a wealth of information in this text for anyone interested in expanding your knowledge on pruning. I do not have a degree in botany or a degree for that matter and found the book well written easy to understand, precise and to the point. I highly recommend this book.
Stunning Tome .......2005-02-28
What a magnificently high brow review of the subject of pruning.
If you can understand what these highly educated folks are talking about then you will not need this book.
The wonderfully proper English manner of only indexing by Latin names, colorful use thereof throughout with only minor mention of common names renders this tome utterly useless to the lay gardener.
An advanced degree in botany is required to fully grok what they attempt to convey.
Shun this item. Wait for a revised version that makes this a useful book vs. the current flogging of hard won degrees.
Book Description
In this book the author looks at the continuing debate about the meaning of quantum theory. The historical development of the theory is traced from the turn of the century through to the 1930's, and the famous debate between Niels Bohr and Albert Einstein. The book examines in detail the arguments that quantum theory is incomplete, as made by Einstein, Boris Podolsky, and Nathan Rosen; the development of Bell's theorem; and crucial experimental tests performed in the early 1980's. Alternative interpretations - pilot waves, quantum gravity, consciousness, many worlds, and God - are described in the closing chapter. This book is aimed at graduate and senior undergraduate students of physics and chemistry taking quantum chemistry or quantum theory courses, and other scientists interested in the subject.

Bridging Descriptions and the Mathematics.......2006-09-27
Succinctly: if you want more than descriptive science popularizations and are ready to tackle the math then this is, quite simply, the best book there is. Jim Baggott introduces the notation and the concepts in an engaging and untiring style and after a careful reading (or three) one is ready to read the original papers. Cannot recommend highly enough.
Author unqualified by own admission, obviously confused.......2006-03-05
The author begins telling us why he wrote it and asking why we should read it. Good question, and the answer is that we shouldn't, and he shouldn't have either.
Oh sure, Jim Baggott has got his equations down pat, but alas, from the opening page he gets hopelessly lost in matters he clearly doesn't understand. Get a clue, Jim; Schrodinger's Cat was a REDUCTIO AD ABSURDUM, a "jumping out of the box" so to speak, showing that the word "consciousness" does not belong in a discussion of quantum theory, unless perhaps in a chapter on the the early history of this subject when everyon was confused. Even Von Neumann went out on some pretty wild limbs when this whole flap started, though he certainly came off of them before his famous axiomatization of quantum mechanics. Furthermore, in case you missed his sequels, he would later advance the concept of "strong" artificial intelligence, which minimally agrees with modern cognitive science that consciousness is a high order function in which the quantum scale of things appears to be utterly irrelevant (and visa versa.)
How about this for a metaphor? This book is much like an otherwise excellent "biology in a nutshell" chapbook, but one which also has a few sprinklings and maybe a chapter or two on scientific creationism and intelligent design, delusions which clearly have no place in modern science.
Such is it with "quantum quackery," the notion that uncertainty gives us carte blanche to impose our metaphysical fantasies on the univerese. Intermixed with genuine erudition, to be sure, this book provides a basic groundwork for all the pseudoscience and mysticism that are the current rage in new age circles. Sadly, the author has done such a fine job with those components of quantum theory thathe actually does understand, that this seems to legitimize the rubbish with which he has filled his knowledge gaps.
In short, this book flirts with the notion of being intellectually dangerous. I'm apalled that Oxford would publish such drivel. Whatever happened to peer review?
Great intro to the quantum, from Author of Quantum Mechanics Demystified.......2006-02-07
This was the first book I ever read about quantum theory-and I found it utterly fascinating. The book is written with a great style-its like he communicates a sense of urgency in the scientific exploration that led to the development of quantum mechanics. He begins with a very well written historical intro that covers Planck's blackbody radiation, the photoelectric effect etc. In the second chapter Baggot takes a surprising turn and lays out some of the mathematical tools of quantum mechanics but in a very basic way. From here he goes into the Bohr-Einstein debates of the 20s and 30s. This part was absolutely fascinating, if you haven't read about this before you'll be blown away by the amazing intellectual challenge fought between these two geniuses. The rest of the book is devoted to the fascinating topic of Bell's theorem, entanglement and hidden variables. The book absolutely blew me away because at the time I didn't know anything about quantum mechanics. If a small bit of math doesn't put you off, I highly recommend the book. If you're a physics, math or engineering student I definitely recommend it.
Insight into Quantum Theory - Great for Physics Students.......2003-06-09
I have a fascination for books on the meaning of quantum theory. Many target the layman and dispense with mathematics. Others assume the reader is adept at applying both wave mechanics and matrix mechanics to quantum problems. Published by Oxford University Press, "The Meaning of Quantum Theory", strikes a good balance that is ideal for undergraduate students of physics and chemistry, and is especially useful as a companion for a formal text on quantum theory.
The author, Jim Baggott, combines his experience as a freelance science writer with his skill as a respected lecturer in physical chemistry. In 1989 he was awarded the Marlow Medal from the Faraday Division of the Royal Society of Chemistry for his research contributions in chemical kinetics and spectroscopy. Baggott is an exceptional writer and I enjoy reading sections at random. I have twice read his book and probably will do so again.
About quantum theory Baggott says, "For the first time, students are taught about a theory which they have to accept and which they have to learn how to apply, but which they cannot be expected to be told its meaning." Baggott argues that beneath the mathematical formalism of quantum mechanics, there exists an interpretation, and a philosophy, that warrants investigation.
The first chapter (40 pages) offers a historical overview of the early development of quantum theory that is probably familiar to many readers.
Chapter 2 (35 pages), titled "Putting it into Practice", differentiates Baggott's work from many others. We learn about operator algebra, and then we encounter experimental evidence that we must either use non-commuting matrices, or non-commuting operators, to describe position-momentum relationships in quantum physics.
Baggott then carefully introduces the underlying postulates of quantum physics (and the mathematical formulation) as described by John von Neumann. We learn about complementary observables, the Dirac bracket notation, state vectors and eigenfunctions, and the usefulness of projection amplitudes. A substantial section is devoted to the Pauli exclusion principal, the polarization properties of photons, measurement operators, and the collapse of the wave function, all topics that are discussed later in the context of experimental results.
After 75 pages of preparation, Baggott asks "What Does it Mean"?, the title of chapter 3. Chapter 4 is "Putting it to the Test", and Chapter 5 is "What are the Alternatives?". A reader that skimmed the mathematical discourse in chapter 2 would still find the last three chapters intriguing, although some sections might be heavy going.
"The Ghost in the Atom: A Discussion of the Mysteries of Quantum Physics" by Davies and Brown is non-mathematical, but offers, nevertheless, an insightful look at alternative interpretations of quantum theory - standard interpretation (Copenhagen interpretation), conscious observer, parallel universes, hidden variables, and a statistical view - that dovetails rather well with Baggott's more detailed and more in-depth analysis. As a precursor to Baggott's book, I also highly recommend Richard Feynman's brilliant lectures published under the title "QED".
Very readable and enlightening.......2003-02-12
This book concentrates more on the philosophical aspects of quantum theory rather than formalism and problem solving, though some simple and easy to follow derivations are presented that give real insights into the guts of the theory, which will help a reader who goes on to pursue quantum theory in greater detail. The historical debate between the positivists and realists during the theories development is presented in a very readable and entertaining way. A very well written and researched book that you will be glad you read.

Book Description
The book constitutes a compact review of the applications of effective field theory methods in flavour physics, with emphasis on heavy quark physics. Some of the relevant applications are discussed to illustrate the method.
It covers the full range of theoretical tools related to the application of the effective field theory idea: Starting from the weak interactions as an effective theory derived from the standard model, well-established methods such as heavy quark effective theory, the heavy quark mass expansion and chiral perturbation theory are addressed. Also more recent ideas such as QCD factorization and soft collinear effective theory are outlined.
Finally the standard model itself is viewed as an effective theory, allowing a model-independent look at the results of the new physics. The book should be useful for the advanced graduate student as well as for scientists who are interested in the theoretical toolkit used in the context of flavour physics. It is not meant as a complete review of the subject, rather it should be useful as an introduction to the basic ideas.

Great Synopsis Of Special Forces.......2005-07-27
From buying and reading this book some time ago, I have to say that this book a a great synopsis of the world's Special Forces, how they operate, organize, etc.
I would have like to have seen some more detail, but I realized that this would be unlikely, mainly due to the nature of Special Forces.
This book is a great introduction to the world of Special Forces and is a good reading by those who want to learn about them.
A nice try..........2004-06-28
This book was alright... It is not anything special and if you really want to know about the special forces you can easily find out tons more information on the internet. Theres also some really good books by former special forces operators that will give you really great information. I recommend "Warrior Soul" by Chuck Pfarrer. This book also lacks information about Canada's special forces, JTF2 (somewhat disapointing as i am Canadian). Overall there are some other errors in the book. This book would be good for children as it is at their reading level and the information is very non-descript and easy to remember the random facts that this book is full of. Basically i was not impressed but it was a good try.
Great!.......2004-05-02
I saw this book at Barnes and Nobels for 30$! Then I found it on amazon. I loved this book at first sight. This explains alot of facts about special force in exquisat details. Information on weapons, vehicals, and other SF Stuff. I'd buy this book. Very VERY VERY VERY cool!
Great looking, simple, too the point, book.......2004-04-10
I love the way this book looks. Some of the colour photography is excellent. This is a first class primer on both modern and historical Special Forces. If you have any interest in then modern or historical military, then this is well worth your dollar. It does a lot to de-mystify what SF does and who they are. It's worth noting that the author served in UK Special Forces, as a Naval Gunfire Observer and therefore more than qualified to write this work. I did spot a few errors, but the overall utility of the work more than outweighs them.
Errors, even from a former SAS(?).......2004-01-07
The author is a former Brit involved in the Falklands, I believe for the SAS (there is an illustration of him from the "Modern Military Uniforms" book. There are, however, quite a few, though relatively minor, errors in details. (eg: says the Israeli raid on Entebbe happened on July 23 1976, instead of the real July 4 date, and the 50cal Hecate II sniper being made in Belgium when it is really made in France.) Even so, it does provide good overviews of various groups on two-page spreads for each group or action. It has collages of weapons and gear with discriptions for each being about 2-3 sentences long. Does have good photos and pretty good maps/diagrams though, but again the information is not as thorough as in other books. "Special Forces in Afghanistan" is probably a better choice for most intents and purposes.
Book Description
On December 10, 2001, in the biggest and most destructive mission in SAS recent history, half of the world's most elite regiment took on Al Qaeda's crack forces in Afghanistan. This is the first-hand account of that battle, drawing on the memories of the men who fought in it.
Customer Reviews:
Good characters.......2005-01-26
This book is a little different from your average SAS book.It is written by a son of a former SAS.The characters are very interesting, from their tifs against each other to their excellent team work to defeat the enemy.
Book Description
Absolutely incredible, and brutally honest, this amazing story recounts the adventures of a British SAS soldier turned mercenary. McAleese fought in some of the world's most dangerous places, from Aden to Rhodesia (against the guerrillas of Zanla), and he nearly lost his life trying to assassinate Colombian drug baron Pablo Escobar. Always in search of the "intense high" of battle, for 25 years he saw almost constant combat...putting him in a unique position to reveal the harsh realities of modern warfare.
Customer Reviews:
McAleese is a great soldier, and writes a great book.......2001-07-13
This is a great read for someone interested in the special forces operations. Such as the SAS, 1 Para, Rhodesian SAS, and mercenary work. The book is an action packed, yet informative read that has a lot of humanity and insight to it. McAleese has led a great life, and an adventurous one at that. If you are interested in learning more about life as an elite soldier or mercenary read NO MEAN SOLDIER.
McAleese is indeed No Mean Soldier.......2001-04-18
This book is an interesting account of a soldier who has been involved in actual combat for almost 20 years of his life.
This career has spanned the British Airborne and Special Forces, Rhodesian and South African Special Forces and as a Mercernary in Africa and South America.
The book itself is a very good read, and conveys much of the reality of modern battle, and also much of it's humour. It's the tragedy that comes through most strongly though, especially in the breakup of Rhodesia, which is still troubled now, over 20 years later, and Callan's massacure of his own troops.
It's certainly a page turner, and I finished the book wondering, "What will he do next?"
Bryn

Among the legendary “behind the lines” operations of the Special Forces from their formation in 1940 onwards are the Green Berets in Vietnam, the Royal Marine Commandos in the Falklands, the SBS in the Aegean in WWII, and US Navy SEALS in the Gulf War. The Mammoth Book of Special Forces contains thirty true and graphic accounts of the most heroic missions ever undertaken behind enemy lines.
Customer Reviews:
Why they are "special".......2007-05-29
This one of two military history books I recently re-read, the other being The Mammoth Book of Special Ops. This volume was edited by Jon E. Lewis and consists of eyewitness accounts and/or analyses of "30 missions of ultimate danger from behind enemy lines" that extend throughout the 20th century, from T.E. Lawrence's "The Revolt in the Desert - Special Force Operations, Arabia, 1917" until Eric Bailey's "Fighting Fire with Fire with Fire, 22 SAS, Afghanistan, 2002). Of special interest to me is the fact that the same core principles of special operations (i.e. special ops) that are evident in most (if not all) of the 30 accounts can be traced back in time at least to ancient Troy. As Lewis observes in his brief but remarkably comprehensive Introduction, "...what did Odysseus do but use `specially trained, equipped, and organized' forces to gain entry into Troy by concealing them inside the Wooden Horse?" Specifically, exceptional preparation, focus, stealth, ingenuity, resourcefulness, and teamwork as well as highly specialized skills and speed of execution when conducting operations behind enemy lines.
Of course, which accounts are of greatest interest will vary from one reader to the next. Those that I found most fascinating include:
"Cockleshell Heroes"
(Royal Marines Boom Patrol Detachment, France 1942)
Patrick Pringle
Comment: According to Pringle, this was the problem to be solved: "Something had to be done about the German ships at Bordeaux. They were sailing regularly to and from Japan. They were running the Allied blockade, taking out prototypes of German weapons and equipment - and bringing back rubber and other raw materials vital in war. Either the ships should be destroyed in the harbour, or the port itself would have to be made unusable." Pringle's account of is of Operation Frankton and a raid led by then Major Herbert ("Blondie") Hasler. FYI, the cockleshell was a canoe that Hasler co-designed with Fred Goatley to meet the mission's strict specifications.
"The Attack on Rommel's HQ"
(11 Scottish Commando, North Africa 1941)
Richard Arnold
Comment: Under the command of Lieutenant Geoffrey Keyes, six officers and fifty-three of other ranks were delivered by submarines to attack Rommel's headquarters (at Beda Littoria, halfway between Tobruk and Bengaz) and either kill or capture him.
"Eagle Claw"
(Delta Force, Iran 1980)
Ian Westwell
Comment: The objective was to rescue 56 U.S. nationals who were held as hostages in Tehran. The group was led by Colonel Charles Beckwith. The Special Forces Operational Detachment Delta (i.e. Delta Force) was Beckwith's "brainchild" and established in 1977, inspired by the British 22nd Special Air Service Regiment (i.e. SAS) with which he served in 1962-63.
"Interrogation"
(SOE, France 1944)
Bruce Marshall
Comment: According to Marshall, the Special Operations Executive (SOE) was formed in 1940 as an amalgamation of various British secret service department, and charged with the co-ordination of `all action, by way of sabotage and subversion, against the enemy overseas.'" In this account, Frederick Yeo-Thomas (his code names "Shelley" and "White Rabbit") parachutes into France to coordinate the Resistance groups and, only four months before D-Day, is captured and interrogated by the Gestapo. And then....
As this review is composed in the U.S. on Memorial Day, 2007, I am especially grateful for books such as this because they help me to understand and appreciate even more the courageous women and men as well as their missions that demonstrate what is "special" about special forces.

Henry Petroski's lyrical history of bridge builders in America is organized around five engineers: James Eads (inventor of the diving bell, which bridged Mississippi at St. Louis); Theodore Cooper (railroad bridge engineer and designer of the ill-fated Quebec Bridge); Gustav Lindenthal (Hell Gate Bridge, New York); Othmar Ammann (George Washington and Verrazano-Narrow bridges); and David Steinman (Mackinac bridge). Petroski's opening and closing chapters, "Imagine" and "Realize," remind us how a bridge starts out as a dream of engineering, but ends as a reality of compromise and maintenance. Edward Tenner says that "The profound contribution of Engineers of Dreams is to remind us that communication across generations may be the most important bridge of all."
Book Description
Petroski reveals the science and engineering--not to mention the politics, egotism, and sheer magic--behind America's great bridges, particularly those constructed during the great bridge-building era starting in the 1870s and continuing through the 1930s. It is the story of the men and women who built the St. Louis, the George Washington, and the Golden Gate bridges, drawing not only on their mastery of numbers but on their gifts for persuasion and self-promotion. It is an account of triumphs and ignominious disasters (including the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, which literally twisted itself apart in a high wind). And throughout this grandly engaging book, Petroski lets us see how bridges became the "symbols and souls" of our civilization, as well as testaments to their builders' vision, ingenuity, and perseverance.
"Seamlessly linked...With astonishing scope and generosity of view, Mr. Petroski places the tradition of American bridge-building in perspective."--New York Times Book Review

BridgePros Review.......2002-08-12
If you want to learn more about the best American bridge designers and their bridges, this is the book for you! In particular it has a very good chapter on Steinman (the designer of the Mackinac Bridge).
This book will tell you the stories and politics behind each one of the designers featured and their bridges.
Book evokes a sense of wonder.......2000-06-07
Engineers of Dreams is a book I've read several times because it involves me in the history behind some of engineerings greatest triumphs... and failures. The story of great engineers with various combinations of vision and practicality, as well as perseverence in all cases, makes for a kind of drama. In some cases, we know how the story ended, with a great bridge we can see. In other cases, the story ends with a wreck and bodies. From the story of the San Francisco Bay Bridge to the story of the first Quebec Bridge, this book itself spans a range of ability and satisfaction that is a joy to perceive.
Not up to Petroski's usual high standard.......1998-12-13
I am a great fan of Henry Petroski, engineering professor and author of such minor classics as The Pencil and The Evolution of Useful Things. Perhaps it is because of these high expectations that I was so disappointed by Engineer of Dreams: Great Bridge Builders and the Spanning of America. In the end, Petroski seems much better at writing about engineering artifacts - pencils, paper clips, or, in this book, bridges - than the makers of those artifacts. Much of Petroski's "biography" here seemed nothing less than mere formula: you could almost see him filling in his computer template for "name, date and place of birth, school, mentor, etc." each time a new engineer was introduced. Further, he did not even attempt to vary the template from person to person, so that the repetitive style becomes unmistakable. This book is worth reading insofar as it provides a history of the bridges themselves, and the limits of engineering technique and imagination.
The Mackinac Bridge is finally recogized.......1998-04-05
Finally, FINALLY: a recognition of David Steinman's achievements. The Mackinac Bridge has been described as a "symphony of concrete and steel". If Steinman had not been an enginneer, he may have been a musician. Some structures clearly belong where they are placed. Just a few, though. Steinman had the eye for such places: Messina, for example. It was nice to see a chapter devoted to him, and the rest of the book was good, but otherwise documented.
A fine book explaining the history of building bridges.......1997-09-08
There are very few books which deal with the detail of what it took to build some of the most useful bridges that , even though they were built almost a hundred years ago, are still used and appreciated by millions of people today. I heartily recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in the subject and am not surprised, but disappointed that the book is not currently available by the publisher.I was going to purchase several copies as gifts to fellow engineers. I look forward to the second edition
