Excellent for self study.......2006-04-26

The book not only teaches you how to book accounts, but also why to do so, which I rarely found in other comparable accounting books. It helps you understand the logic behind the accounting rules. The author is both a good teacher and good reseacher. I love this book!

Wordy and heavy.......2003-05-28

I have been using this book for an Intermediate Accounting class that I have to take as a pre requisite for a Master's degree. Even though the book is quite complete in explaining accounting principles it is unecessarily wordy and extremely heavy.

The first five chapters (220 pages) provide a review of what accounting is, the accounting information system, the income statement and the balance sheet. Most of the what is written here is either too basic or will be later found in the remaining chapters of the book. These pages could be easily removed without sacrificing the remaining contents and the understanding of accounting.

Later chapters, however, are also wordy and take too much time explaining concepts that could readily be understood in a couple of lines. You end up getting tired of reading the same thing again and again.

In the end, we have to pay the price for so many pages. With 1300 + pages this book is the heaviest one I have ever carried around. Many people in my class have to use a wheeled backpack. I sometimes can't understand the fascination of editors in the US for such heavy books. If you go to Europe, Asia, and South America, books are usually thinner and much, much lighter.

I would recommend the book to be offered in a CD Rom (or e text) format. Carriyng my laptop around makes more sense than carrying the book.

Accounting can sound less confusing than explained here.......2002-08-08

This book for undergraduate accounting classes at the junior level was more confusing to me than the comparable book by Kieso et al. The sequence of the chapters is not entirely logical. More advanced concepts seem to be covered towards the beginning whereas some basic chapters are discussed towards the end of the book. It was especially confusing when not covering the chapter in chronological order - too bad that my class's syllabus was not outlined according to this book's chapter sequence. In a different class - when we used Intermediate Accounting by Kieso - jumping back and forth was not a big problem. This book by Spiceland also seemed to be very wordy. Studying by solving problems at the end of the book seemed to work. However, it is more important to know how your teacher designs the quizzes and exams and then study accordingly. On the CD that comes with it, there is a lot of ballast. The quizzes are the only valuable thing, I felt. There is not really a lot of use complaining about its weight - accounting books always seem to be extremely heavy and pricy. But this certainly holds true for this one as well!!! When I tried to resell the book at the university bookstore, they would not take it back because it was selling badly on a national scale. Very frustrating when you paid [$$$] just a couple of months earlier...

boring.......2002-05-30

This book put me to sleep. It is a very bland book. This is based on the volume one edition chapters 1-14.

Excellent Instruction.......2001-10-19

Straightforward and logical, the material in this text is so well laid out that it is truely possible to learn Intermediate Accounting on your own. An excellent sequential and progressive presentation of a difficult subject! My school has changed texts and is using Kieso's text, but I want to learn the material (all but impossible with Kieso) so this is the text I rely on!

speculations on GRB and dark matter.......2007-09-29

The papers in the book are mostly observational analysis and some instrument design. Important problems like the sources of [large] gamma ray bursts are tackled. Speculations include trying to detect TeV photons during or soon after one of these bursts has been observed.

But sprinkled throughout the book are more ambitious theoretical papers. Turner, for example, looks at the possible distribution of dark matter and dark energy in the universe. He mines the small anisotropy seen in the Cosmic Background Radiation, for possible information. Another paper looks at the early universe and how dark matter might have been born.

Testing such speculations is rather hard, to say the least. But the ideas are very imaginative. The book has this dichotomy. Rather down to earth experimental papers and high theory.

An excellent volume on the subject...........2004-03-21

As its inside cover states, this oversized book is full of maps, technical drawings, tables, rare photos, and stories. So you see its more than just an informative factual textbook, it is also an easy to enjoy coffee table book, nicely bound on good paper (Brasseys Hardback ISBN: 1574882465).

One large table over many pages lists very nearly every U-Boat number and its type, builder, commisioned date, and its ultimate eding: fate, date, final captain, place, means, dead, and saved, e.g.

U-1229; Type IXC/40; built by Duetche; commisioned January 13,1944; Sunk; on August 20, 1944; Captained by Zinke, A; at SE of Newfoundland; by USN aircfaft: VC-42 (Bogue); 18 dead; ? # Saved.

More text than anything else, but also there's always some sort of graphics on every page, well maybe not at the index :)

If you need only one volume on U-Boats this might be the very best choice.

An interesting book on U-Boats.......2004-03-12

It's a nice book for those who are interested on German U-boats.
It also contain a brief introduction on Enigma (the German encryption machine).
Unfortunately it does not contain some engineering drawings such as those in Roessler books.But though useful.
Its historical coverage of german U-boats is also useful.
As a researcher on German U-boats ,I'd be glad to have other readers,writers comments on U-Boat articles.

I collect and read books on U-Boats, and this illustrated history is an excellent addition to my library. A must for those who are World War II buffs!

A Fantastic Work for Anybody Interested in U-Boats or WWII.......2000-05-17

This book really surprised me. I actually bought it on in impulse with a gift certificate I had received for my birthday. I had seen "Das Boot" and "U-571" and since my interest was peaked by these movies, I thought I should buy a book about U-Boats to get the full story of their role in WWI and WWII.

This book did not disappoint! It is simply incredible considering how much information is between the covers as well as how many striking photographs are contained in this book. One could almost consider it an Encyclopedia on U-Boats. This book describes the full history of Deutschlands Unterseeboot Programe as well as a detailed history and explination of each type of boat. It also has a table listing every U-Boat made and a brief history about each ship. This book also does a fantastic job explaining the role of these vessels in WWII (and to a lesser extent, WWI). I can imagine with "U-571" in theaters and "Das Boot" on DVD, U-Boat interest has increased. I would suggest to anybody interested in U-Boats because of these movies or for any other reason to look no futher. "U-Boats : The Illustrated History of the Raiders of the Deep" is probably the best book presently available on this subject.

somewhat dated............2002-10-13

....as it was written in the 70's and 80's, but it's an able collection of Bookchin's writings on topics as varied as ecology, environmentalism, anarchy, Marxism, and the contributions to be made by a utopian perspective. The author also writes about the need for a social ecology that keeps in mind the parallel between oppression of people with oppression of the natural world. Worth reading if you can get past the polemical tone, critical and even bullying at times, and the steady note of indignation; for this reader it felt like a knuckle rapping steadily on the forehead.

An eye-opening introduction to environmental issues........2000-04-11

This collection of more than 55 excerpts not only offers an introduction to the environmental issues currently affecting our world (e.g., pesticides and pollution, growth, overpopulation, third-world poverty, and consumerism, among others), but also provides an excellent introduction to the classic writings of numerous contributors including Rachel Carson, E. F. Schumacher, Fritjof Capra, Ed Abbey, and Aldo Leopold, among others. Although writer Thomas Berry is unfortunately absent from this collection, and the selections are short (3 to 5 pages each), this book should nevertheless be considered a good starting place to get one's feet wet in the green debate. Then, if wet feet aren't enough, I would recommend the recent "Dharma Rain" (2000) collection of environmental essays from a buddhist perspective.
