Emerging Financial Markets
ASIN: 0262133911 |
Book Description
This collection examines the design of financial systems for central and eastern European countries engaged in the transition to market-based economies. It highlights the need for better approaches to measuring performance and providing incentives in banking and for financial mechanisms to encourage private-sector growth. Written by leading European and North American scholars, the essays apply modern finance theory and empirical data to the development of new financial sectors.
Two broad themes emerge. The first is the critical relationship between reforms in the financial sector and in the real economy. Lending policies, which have a significant impact on business performance, need to discourage bad firm performance without prematurely liquidating potentially profitable enterprises. Conversely, the quality of firms influences the financial sector. If banks cannot find good credit risks, they cannot improve the quality of their portfolios. Until a critical mass of viable firms is built, equity markets will not develop sufficiently. The second theme is that the lack of fully developed markets and institutions may distort the policy outcomes predicted under models based on fully developed economies. Reliance on these models may therefore be inappropriate for transition economies.

Book Description
On September 1996, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), prohibiting nuclear explosions worldwide, in all environments. The treaty calls for a global verification system, including a network of 321 monitoring stations distributed around the globe, a data communications network, an international data center (IDC), and on-site inspections to verify compliance. Successful monitoring of a CTBT requires that we detect and identify all nuclear explosions. Since many events of concern will be too small to be detected teleseismically, this capability requires the use of regional-distance seismograms. The complexity of regional seismograms presents many technical challenges for a monitoring program. This issue focuses on problems associated with regional wave propagation through complex media. It includes papers that investigate regional variations of elastic and anelastic properties of Eurasia, the blockage of regional phases by sedimentary basins, methods for modeling regional wave propagation and for calibrating seismic wave paths in order to extract amplitude variations and source parameters. These papers illustrate the research and development necessary for acquiring an understanding of regional wave propagation which in turn provides the foundation for operational tools used to monitor a CTBT.

Where are all the real rock stars?
Eliza is looking to date a rock star -- though she uses the term loosely. None of her boyfriends have been famous. Most have unbearable habits and overbearing mothers. A few only played show tunes. Still, they're intense. Pierced. Tragically stubbled. With a predilection for dressing in black. Eliza finds them deep -- in theory, anyway. But in reality, none comes close to the object of her original rock-star crush: actor/crooner Jack Wagner. When her latest catch turns out be another mama's boy, Eliza begins to realize love is nothing like her favorite '80s song.
Is she ready to face the music?
Just as Eliza is planning her next move, she's dealt an emotional triple-whammy involving her sister, her best friend, and a horrific blind date. That's when she realizes that only by taking a good look at her past -- and her tape collection -- will she ever be able to hear a different kind of song and live a different kind of life.

Nice flashback but okay story.......2007-01-23
This was a strange book for me because it was like being on a rollercoaster. At times I loved it, and then there were times I was bored silly and falling asleep. I finished the book just because I liked the 80s references, even though the book didn't have much to do with Jack Wagner (I think that was just a way to lure people to buy the book). If you like the 80s, then this book might be worth a read. But I probably won't buy another one from this author because it just took me too long to get through this one.
Excellent book.......2007-01-23
"Getting over Jack Wagner" is one of the most refreshing books that I have read in a long time. In fact, I read it in one day because it flowed so seemlessly! I think there's a little Eliza in all of us--being preoccupied with rock stars, wearing black and living inside one's own head. I highly recommend giving this book a try.
Not for women only..........2006-04-22
Juska's deeply pleasurable novel transcends its chick-lit trappings. Packed with hysterical pop-culture references and moments of genuine insight, it's the kind of book that will have you both nodding your head and laughing out loud. You don't need to be a child of the '80s--or a female--to appreciate such high-quality, flat-out fun writing.
My favorite book ever.......2006-02-19
This book is kind of like High Fidelity on estrogen, and that's a good thing. As a pop culture junkie, I got a kick out of all the references scattered throughout. Who doesn't remember their first rocker crush?
Juska knows how to use flashbacks to push the book forward, which is not an easy feat. Some authors tend to overuse flashbacks, stopping their story in the process. In her hands, though, it works.
This book kept me laughing throughout and turning the pages. I even read it twice. It's a great light read, but not so fluffy that you feel your IQ dropping as you read it.
One person's junk..........2006-01-21
My mom sent me this book over the summer with a bunch of other items from home. I started to read it and fell in love with it, it was perfect for me and I related to it so well. I asked her what compelled her to buy it for me and it turns out, she got it as a white elephant gift at work. She had no idea what it was about, and just threw it in a box with a few of my old prom dresses and a copy of Seabiscut (which I will never touch). This book is retrospective, smart, sarcastic, witty and perfect for every girl who is not always as together as they seem. She tapped right into what makes me tick and I LOVE this book.

Setting the Record Straight.......2006-05-28
Sun, 28 May 2006
After the Civil War fiasco, Jefferson Davis encouraged the South to "bury its dead, its hopes and its aspirations," but the South will never surrender. He declared that the past is dead. His first wife was Sarah Knox Taylor, daughter of U. S. President Zachary Taylor. Davis was a congressman, senator, secretary of war, and President of the Confederacy. His horse's name
was Thunder.
In 1858, Horace Greely called Jefferson Davis "unquestionably the foremost man in the South today" and a great president. He was educated at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky. "His occasional unintentional arrogance came from his sense of great commanding power.
One of his generals during the war, declared the best by Robert E. Lee, was besmirked in 2005 by two college professors thusly:
This book was written in association with Texas Christian University for the American Crisis Series, Books on Civil War Era. Previously, I reviewed ON THE BRINK OF CIVIL WAR by John C. Waugh. This one, however, is what the title says all 'myth' written by two journalism professors at the University of Tennessee. I guess they were assigned this personage, the greatest Civil War General, according to Robert E. Lee, because they work in Tennessee. Neither are from the state of Tennessee and know nothing, no facts about this great soldier of the Civil War.
They know nothing about history per se, so I am just wondering why the history department at the University in Knoxville would
not have been a better selection to write about one of our native heroes. These frauds call their subject 'white trash' because the Klan wore white sheets in his reincarnation of the group(now they wear purple, green and white outfits) used to
protect everybody from the carpet baggers after the Civil War. These men are not from Tennessee, and should never have been chosen to write this book.
It is biased and slanted and exactly a 'myth' a fairy tale of the worse sort. Forrest was from a good background and family (father was a locksmith/doctor) and born in Chapel Hill, Tennessee, in Bedford County. These men thought he had been born in Memphis as they dwell on something which happened which was
infamous instead of famous. Those of us at the public meeting where they talked had not heard of that specific incident, and we are native Tennesseans. His life was not a 'morality tale,' as they claim, nor was he a comic book figure. He was a real live hero, not something made up in the comics. They even equate
him with Forrest Gump, how dumb can a person be? They are blasphamous in their assertions that he was less than they.
Anyone can get a PhD and still not be competent. I have three PhDs in my family, and they have no common sense. Neither do these writers. Don't believe anything you read in this book. It is all made up, that's what journalism is these days, manufactured lies. These teachers are in the journalism
department, not the history area, so they never should have taken on this endeavor.
They make Forrest out to be a dumb, silly "white trash" from
Tennessee when they know better. It is just to sully his reputation as a great general. They don't know how to present facts or truth. They did not research this book adequately, so just read it as fiction.
Jefferson Davis was born into a patriotic American family at Fairview, Kentucky. He would have drawn his sword if he could have been around to read this garbage about one of his best generals and a great American in his own
right.
Book Description
Patricia Crone's God's Rule is a fundamental reconstruction and analysis of Islamic political thought focusing on its intellectual development during the six centuries from the rise of Islam to the Mongol invasions. Based on a wide variety of primary sources -- including some not previously considered from the point of view of political thought -- this is the first book to examine the medieval Muslim answers to questions crucial to any Western understanding of Middle Eastern politics today, such as why states are necessary, what functions they are meant to fulfill, and whether or why they must be based on religious law.
The character of Muslim political thought differs fundamentally from its counterpart in the West. The Christian West started with the conviction that truth (both cognitive and moral) and political power belonged to separate spheres. Ultimately, both power and truth originated with God, but they had distinct historical trajectories and regulated different aspects of life. The Muslims started with the opposite conviction: truth and power appeared at the same time in history and regulated the same aspects of life. In medieval Europe, the disagreement over the relationship between religious authority and political power took the form of a protracted controversy regarding the roles of church and state. In the medieval Middle East, religious authority and political power were embedded in a single, divinely sanctioned Islamic community -- a congregation and state made one. The disagreement, therefore, took the form of a protracted controversy over the nature and function of the leadership of Islam itself. Crone makes Islamic political thought accessible by relating it to the contexts in which it was formulated, analyzing it in terms familiar to today's reader, and, where possible, comparing it with medieval European and modern political thought. By examining the ideological point of departure for medieval Islamic political thought, Crone provides an invaluable foundation for a better understanding of contemporary Middle Eastern politics and current world events.

Nothing New Under The Sun.......2005-11-14
First of all this book is a great failure, from the point of view of who the author is. It is a shame that Crone was forced by Columbia University Press to write this kind of general survey. The book only repeats what has been know for more than 50 or 60 years. Scholars such as Laoust have already given us a much better account of these issues. In fact, one feels that this is almost a translation of Laoust's book. Importantly, there is no political theorizing in this work, only description.
This is really nothing but a basic and not so practical textbook that pretends to be scholarship. I hope Crone will use in a more scholarly way her position at the School of Advanced Studies. This is not the kind of book one expects from her.
Excellent showcase of immense mutability.......2005-07-08
This is a great treatment of Islamic political thought from the founding of Islam to the end of the medieval period. It is written with the standards of professional scholarship, with extensive documentation and references, and some interesting nuggets and arguments in the notes. However, I doubt this would limit the interest for a general audience, as the markings of scholarship are pretty unobtrusive.
Of course, one of the main reasons a general readership would care is to get some context and underpinnings for the political relationships that Westerners are becoming more and more interested in. _God's Rule_ does serve that purpose well. It also shows the dizzying variation in the political thought of various branches and sects of Islam. For theories of the obligations of the state; the proper legitimation of rulers; the relationship between state, society, and religion; the role of "civil disobedience" (to use an anachronistic term); the state and warfare; etc., Crone shows that Islam is incredibly mutable. That in itself is a valuable insight, as we think today about the possibilities for institutional change from autocracy in the Islamic world and the political arrangements that do exist.
Of course, the book is not written with an eye to current events, and it is also excellent as a treatment of the history of political thought in its own right. The time period covered includes an era in which an Islamic empire was the ascendant political unit in the world. More generally this is a large and politically important region of the world at the time. For these reasons its political thought compels our interest.
One minor complaint: I wish Crone had given more emphasis to the size of the various Islamic sects she surveys. Sometimes it is easy to forget that some of the individual communities covered were very small.
This would not make such a good introduction to the history of the Islamic world in general. _History of Islamic Societies_ by Ira Lapidus is a good place for something like that. But it would probably make an excellent 2nd or 3rd book for someone interested in Islamic history.
Overview of Islamic political thought in the Middle Age.......2005-01-09
It is difficult nowadays to get an objective, nuanced opinion on Islam, neither flattering nor biased against it. If I were to recommend a way to try and achieve that, I would suggest to read several good books on the matter, including this among them, which I read several months ago and found it very informative. However, I almost get lost from time to time with the name of so many different "groups" o "sensibilities" within early Islam. It also clarified to me why deciding who the right calipha was implied not only a political choice but also a religious one. Besides, I think that its review of the concept of jihad was balanced.
Other books that I would recommend to read would be the following: A) ASSESSMENTS OF ISLAM: 1) The best, impartial, wise: "Islam. History, present, future" by Hans Küng (written in German, already available in Spanish, English translation coming in 2007); 2) Moderate Islam at its best: "The Great Theft : Wrestling Islam from the Extremists" by Khaled M. Abou El Fadl; 3) Harsh but well argued: "Muslims in the West: Redefining the Separation of Church & State" by Sami Awad Aldeeb Abu-Sahliehand; and 4) Autobiography of a courageous woman: "Infidel" by Ayaan Hirsi Ali. She is a controversial thinker with a very interesting life. B) HISTORY: 5) General: "The Venture of Islam", by Marshall G. S. Hodgson (nowadays a classic included in any bibliography on Islam); 6) Turks: "The Turks in World History" by Carter Vaughn Findley; and 7) Jihad: "Understanding Jihad" by David Cook (it also seems interesting although I have not read it yet: "Jihad in Islamic History: Doctrines and Practice" by Michael Bonner).

Methodical and penetrating writing........1998-07-23
Well researched I guess. There is no bibliography or works cited. Actually written as if the writer doesn't want to make enemies. The Buffalo National River made enough of those during its emergence I suppose. Still the book is written with the deep-seated feelings that only those who truly aprreciate the steadily changing equilibrium of natural spaces can envoke.
