Don't try to learn anything from this book.......2002-11-21
This may be a great book if you already know everything about finance. I've taken MBA level Finance courses, and quite honestly, I found this book difficult to understand. The author casually mentions financial concepts without defining them and expect you to understand complex financial theories he hasn't covered.
I tried to do the questions at the end of each chapter, and while there is an answer guide, it does nothing to explain how the answer was derived. How you get the answer is the important part, but this text won't give you any assistance. Plus, some of the answers were just plain wrong (I checked with several experts).
There are better texts out there - your time is better spent elsewhere.
Would have been good w/o the errors.......2002-07-21
If you read a financial text w/o checking the numbers, you wouldn't find the mistakes. This book has had too many, because I am checking the numbers. I had to cross reference this book with a Financial Accounting text b/c I kept thinking I was incorrect.
All I have to say is take a look at pages 100, 101, 102 for great examples of the many mistakes. I am not happy.
By the way, I picked up this book from a friend in order to gauge whether I would buy the new version. Guess what I am not going to buy?
The most well-thought-out book of its kind!.......1999-11-01
Professor Helfert's graphic presentations have caused concepts to gel that were amorphous in my mind for years despite an investment banking background. I would recommend this book as a first book to anyone interested in quickly obtaining a bird's eye view of the business entity from a "business systems" approach. Helfert's position is that of an engineer or a scientist: Every business has a structure that can be indentified, analyzed, and then manipulated to increase shareholder value.
Every new issue refers back to the Investment, Operations, Financing structure Helfert lucidly charts out in the introductory chapter. If this is old hat to you, and you've read Corp. Fin. by Brealy & Meyers (sp?), maybe you don't need this book. All others: BUY IT!!!
It's the best book that I had read.......1999-07-07
I read russian translation of this book. There are only 8000 examples in russian and this book became a deficit in 1996 (when it was published in Russia). Now I want to read the English (original) version of this wonderful book. The most impressions are from the detailed (comprehensive) theory with detailed exercises and notes.
Let say my Great Thanks to author for his excellent book.
With regards, Sergey Krupin
Terrible!!.......1999-01-07
This is the worst text book I have ever purchased for a class. It is full of errors and is very difficulty to follow. There are not enough practice problems and the answer key does not give enough information as to how the answer came about. There are discrepencies from one page to the next.

Dear Medical Colleagues!.......2001-03-10
When I first purchased this book, I thought it was just another pricey self help tome, written for self indulgent doctors, by a novice editor. Boy, was I wrong. This text, with CD-ROM, is a real masterpiece, written by professional CPAs, MBAs, JDs, CFPs, and even physician executives, all who have years of experience working with medical practitioners, IPAs, PPMCs, or MCOs of all types. The doctor-editor even has an MBA, is an insurance agent, securities advisor and is a board certified surgeon and finacial planner.
The book itself is divided into two parts: (1) medical practice finacial planning and (2) personal finacial planning. For, it is Dr. Marcinko's opinion, that in-efficent practices will no longer generate the free cash flow needed for personal planning endeavors. In the current managed care environment, he indeed may be right....
For example, the book augments the traditional financial plannig disciplines of budgeting, taxation, investing, insurance, retirement and estate plannig, with the new realities of managed medical care. These previously unaddressed topics include: office based managerial and cost accounting, marginal revenue and cost concepts, negotiating skills, asset protection, office computers, software and MIS, risk management and a host of legal landmines, including OSHA, Stark I and II laws, anti-trust, insurance fraud and abuse, HMOs, MCOs, PHAs, etc.
This book is so easy to read, fact filled, and stream lined for doctors, that I consider it a must read for all medical professionals. Rather than being overpriced, it is really under valued relative to the cost efficiencies it will bring to your practice and life. Without a doubt, this book will make you money, and save you even more. Don't go to the office, or through life, without it.
A New Guide For Us All.......2000-12-05
This book is a wonderful new addition to the libraries of those of us who are health care professionals and are trying to deal with the daily changing of medicine and economics. As all of us who practice medicine know, our practice time has increased while our economic gains have failed to keep pace. In fact, most of us are at a net loss over the past few years if you extrapolate your earnings per hour of work. But as dedicated doctors we strive to provide the best care for our patients regardless. Dr. Marcinko's book provides alternatives to traditional thinking and helps you see light at the end of the tunnel. Wonderful ideas and many practical thoughts for us to work with today so that tomorrow is a little better. Highly suggest this to all my colleagues.

Doctors are NOT Poor Business People
It is well know that doctors and nurses are poor business people, especially in the world of managed care. Well, not this editor or his contributing authors; all from the fields of law, accountancy, medicine, insurance, securities, business, management and the investing and financial services professions.
Not only does the first section of this book review medical office practice management tips, but it also teaches physicians how to profit more from their toil. Then, the book relates best practices to invest hard earned money in the sectors of risk management, budgeting, housing, automobiles, college educaton, taxation, investing, retirement and estate planning.
URLs and information resources abound, and the CD-ROM is a fabulous guide giving 'real-life' examples for the above topics. Physician and healthcare provider specificity makes this major textbook a 'must read' for all medical professionals.

Book Description
An overview of EU law and practice in anti-dumping investigations. It is both for those who think they may have grounds for complaint under the law, and those against whom a complaint may be made.
The book covers the EU anti-dumping rules and the EU obligations under GATT and WTO provisions. It looks at the essential criteria of anti-dumping investigations: whether dumping is taking place; whether dumping is causing injury to an EU industry; whether it is in the interest of the ECC to take action.

The Best Overview of EU Dumping Law.......2000-11-04
This is an excellent book for anyone coming to the European Community's Anti-Dumping Regulation for the first time. It is also a valuable handbook for lawyers and exporters in non-EU countries who find themselves confronted with an anti-dumping questionnaire from the European Commission and have no previous experience of dumping investigations. The book is immensely readable, easy to understand, and sets out all the basic principles. Its absence of legal jargon is to be commended!

Book Description
Ed Lemmon managed the largest fenced pasture in the world (865,000 acres—an area larger than Rhode Island), bossed the single biggest roundup in history, held the record for the largest number of cattle (nine hundred) cut out, roped, and brought to the branding fire in a single day, and handled more cattle (more than a million head) than any other man.
Lemmon covered virtually every foot of range in western South Dakota and parts of Wyoming, Montana, and Nebraska on horseback and knew every important brand in the West. His recollections read like a who's who of the good old–bad old days: cattle kings and saddle tramps, stock detectives and cattle rustlers, stage-drivers and stage robbers, ranch wives and "scarlet poppies"—Ed Lemmon knew them all or had "heard tell."

A good guide book for the beginners in quantum chemistry.......2000-03-31
Quantum chemical calculation method has become an indispensable tool in exploring chemistry. However, for the inborn difficulty of quantum chemistry the beginners hesitate to adopt this powerful tool in their research. This book provides various specific examples and exercises. They are appropriately chosen to improve your capability. When I have some problems in determining which basis set must be selected and the theoretical level at which calculation will be processed, this book is a good guide to me. Although all the content is based on only one commercial packge(Gaussian series), I would like to recommend this book to all scientists who have interests in computational chemistry.

Book Description
The articles in this collection examine the issues arising from the use and abuse of the term "ecology" in environmental education to encourage ecologists to become more engaged with education at all levels. Although great efforts have been made to improve understanding of the environment via programs offered by educational establishments, government agencies and others, it is sometimes perceived that environmental "education" actually entails the "advocacy" of particular values and beliefs.

A fun and witty read!.......2005-01-30
Very enjoyable and a great fun quick read. Interesting fully developed characters with an adventurous plot including a spot of romance. A must read if you enjoy humor!
Book Description
Award-winning broadcast journalist and public radio correspondent Michael Goldfarb has written the most stirring narrative to emerge from the Second Gulf War. It travels to the frontlines of battle and into the hearts of two men from different cultures whose intimate friendship and mutual passion for freedom can inspire us all.
Ahmad's War, Ahmad's Peace is the author's tribute to Ahmad Shawkat, the Iraqi Kurd who served as Goldfarb's translator during “Major Combat Operations.” Under an oppressive regime, Ahmad worked to promote freedom of expression. Goldfarb recounts his powerful yet all-too-brief relationship with Ahmad and introduces readers to the life of a true hero.
Eighteen years old when the Ba’ath Party seized control in Iraq, Ahmad intimately and poetically describes his imprisonment and torture twice by Saddam Hussein’s regime. Ahmad was banished from his hometown of Mosul for his political writings, and just as he began to taste freedom with the fall of Saddam and his large family’s return home, Ahmad was murdered for publicly decrying Islamic terror in newspaper editorials that he began to publish.
Ahmad’s story of one heroic man will forever change our perception of what all Iraqis have suffered and continue to endure.

Recommended Reading For Anyone Interested In Iraq, The Middle East, Or Simply Human Study.......2007-02-02
Ahmad's War, Ahmad's Peace: Surviving Under Saddam, Dying In New Iraq is an outstanding book that inspires and educates.
The story centers around the United States' invasion of Iraq and the subsequent overthrow of Saddam Hussein and Ahmad Shawkat, an Iraqi Kurd. Ahmad is an intellectual, a reader, a writer, a husband, and a father. He's had many different ups and downs throughout his life in a country that didn't quite value its intellectuals and often times tried to silence them.
As told by Michael Goldfarb, a British journalist in Iraq to cover the war, the story is both beautiful and heartbreaking. Going behind the scenes, Mr. Goldfarb shows us the life in Iraq from the perspective of a native.
Very few books remain neutral on the subject of Iraq War. Goldfarb manages to do so well. I highly recommend picking this one up.
Ahmad Shawkat: scholar, intellectual, writer, patriot.......2006-02-21
This book is the author's tribute to the late Ahmad Shawkat, a Kurdish translator who worked with Goldfarb when we was covering the war in Iraq for WBUR radio. Goldfarb is a London-based reporter for the American public radio station; he first met Shawkat shortly before the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime in 2003.
Goldfarb was more than a man who knew the language. As an intellectual, he had moved in revolutionary circles for many years, agitating against Hussein's government. He had been captured, imprisoned and tortured on a couple of occasions and once even met the dictator. As a Kurd, he rejected the sectarian leanings of many of his people in favor of a single, unified nation. As Goldfarb explains, Ahmad Shawkat was uniquely qualified not only to translate words but to provide context to what the reporter was seeing and hearing on the streets of a new Iraq.
The first section of the book follows the two men together as Goldfarb reports on the war for public radio. (His dispatches can be heard on WBUR's Inside Out web site.) The last section is the story of Shawkat's tragic death at the hands of an assassin and the months after when the author returns to the war-torn country. The middle section, Ahmad's Life, is the author's reconstruction of his translator's story. From his early life as a bookish boy through college and into adulthood, the reader learns to know a man who never stopped searching for the answers in life, and the solutions, whether they be of a political or a religious nature.
Goldfarb's own take on the war in Iraq may surprise some readers. Although he is very critical of the Bush administration's handling of the post-war situation, the author and reporter initially supported U.S. action there in the belief that the Iraqi people could be freed. He and Ahmad speak about this shared belief at length, alternately dreaming of the future and despairing as the country falls into chaos and internal strife in the months after the fall of Saddam's army.
Michael Goldfarb writes about the qualities he looks for in a translator. Often he cannot find all of those things in one person. In Ahmad Shawkat, he finds a scholar, an intellectual, a writer, a patriot and at the end a close friend. It is a remarkable life story which could be difficult to read due to the fact that one knows how it ends. In spite of this, Goldfarb's skill makes for a moving, poignant read from start to finish. Highly recommended.
Such Is Life in the Middle East........2005-10-07
In this book, you will find information about leaders we have heard of. some famous and some infamous. Khomeini Auyatollah, Osama bin Laden, Gamal Abdel Nasser, Jelal Talabani, Kind Faisal I & II, and Saddam Hussein. American generals include Norman Schwarzkopf and General David Petraeus. Theirs is a history of duplicity and violence against others. One of the triumps of the Bush administration's Iraq policy is that "they managed to create an environment in which Americans, rather than being thanked, are more likely to be abducted and decapitated if they walk down a street alone."
Iraq was born in the aftermath of WWI, as the Allies carved up the Ottoman Empire and created the nations of the modern Middle East. The British created an Iraqi government modeled on their own, with a constitutional monarchy established. Faisal I was chosen to be elected the first King, and his relaitonship with T. E. Lawrence is shown in the movie, 'Lawrence of Arabia.'
When wars end, generally the battlefield is cleaned up. After WWII, warships were mothballed and the California desert was filled with old warplanes. That would be a sight to see! When the Cold War was over, USA did nothing to decomission its proxies (tyrants created and sustained in power), and it is now paying the price. In Afghanistan, Taliban and al Qaeda were formed as terrorist groups against their own people.
"Life without problems is not interesting" and "We each have a role to play" introduce you to the integrity and devotion of Ahmad Shawkat to his family and to his country. He felt helpless and told the author, "Only America has the power to do these things." Ahmad looked like someone I know here, Jim Nahmad, always on the prowl to find lost people whom he can help. Ahmad took chances and went into war torn areas, and paid the price, just as America paid for their intervention with the deaths on 9/11/01. If you are a listener to Public Radio, you willl have heard Goldfarb's "Inside Out" program. He won the Edward R. Morrow award for one of his features on Ahmad.
I had a doctor called Ahmed. They said he came to America from India. I once worked as a medical transcriptionist for Dr. Z also from India. I became friends with his sister-in-law who, with her two brothers, attended Vo-Tech when I did. They are secretitive people, innocent in a way about America's abundance, and hire family to work in their offices. Dr. Z. had his connected to the local hospital; on Secretaries Day, even though I was not one of his employees, I was invited to have a meal with them and he told me, "Betty, when I was in school in Chicago, I actually laughed." I would ask sometimes if he ever smiled; his wife was always smiling. The different cultures keep nationalities apart as they feel they cannot trust each other and thus, deception rules. Ahmed is young and agrees that he does not know how to get a specialist, or prescribe the needed medicines. He was personable, but incompetent as a family doctor. He wanted to be a specialist and so charged accordingly.
"Admad began to feel freedom at last with the fall of Saddam. He had a newspaper in which he decried terrorists in his editorials. He as murdered as a result. Goldfarb won the Lowell Thomas award for his report about British Jihad in 2005.
A Beautiful Friendship.......2005-10-04
Besides being an extremely well-written crash course in what went on in Iraq at the outset of the current war, Michael Goldfarb's superb book describes the beautiful friendship that developed between him & his extraordinary interpreter while Goldfarb was covering the war in Iraq. Goldfarb has been a voice of reason on NPR for many years; anyone familiar with his first rate radio work will easily be able to hear him telling this story -- he writes the way he talks: the voice is engaging, precise & always lucid. He has a gift for describing even the most complicated events in a way that the general reader can readily understand. As engaging & personable as Goldfarb is himself, he never lets you forget that the real hero is Ahmad, an amazingly resilient & likeable fellow -- a man of honor & courage & of incredible personal warmth.
Despite the cruel tribulations recounted in the story, the book is notable for its gladness of spirit -- it isn't grim & forbidding -- quite the contrary: Ahmad's story is a sad one, but the man himself was not a sad person, & certainly not one given to self-pity. He is full of life & enthusiasm & you will be glad to meet him.
A Savage Beauty.......2005-08-16
Of all the articles and books that I've read concerning the modern history of Iraq, none has affected me as much as Michael Goldfarb's wonderful new work. Goldfarb brilliantly interweaves the history of Iraq with life story of his interpreter Ahmad--his suffering, joy, hopes seemingly fulfilled by the fall of Saddam, hopes corroded by the miscalculations and lack of planning by the American government. No matter which side of the Iraqi debate a reader has taken, this is a book that challenges all pre-conceived ideas. Perhaps even more importantly, it is a shattering personal story written with enomrous skill and perception by an exceptional journalist.
Essential reading.

Examining the concepts of Marxist history and class struggle.......2003-03-09
Winner of the 2001 Isaac Deutscher Memorial Prize, Ehud's Dagger: Class Struggle In The English Revolution by James Holstun (Professor of English, State University of New York - Buffalo) is an extensive, 460-page historical survey and analysis of seventeenth-century England's first capitalist and anti-capitalist revolutions. Examining the concepts of Marxist history and class struggle as applied to hierarchy and history, Ehud's Dagger expertly dissects and analyzes social evolution and society motives of the times. Meticulous, scholarly, and thoroughly "reader friendly", Ehud's Dagger is a welcome and highly recommended addition to English History and The History of Economics reference collections and supplemental reading lists.
Somewhat eccentric, worth 3.4 stars.......2001-08-06
This is a somewhat eccentric book. It is by an English professor and it wishes to counter the anti-Marxist consensus that has grown up around the origins of the English revolution. The book comes in two parts. The first discusses the revisionist historiography of the English Revolution, the Foucault-New Historicist influences on literary criticism, and Marxist revisions of the theory of class struggle. The second part looks at five special aspects of the revolution: the supporters of the assasin of the Duke of Buckingham, the praxis of the New Model Army, a female prophet named Anna Trapnel, a supporter of tyrannicide named Edward Sexby, and Gerrard Winstanely and the Diggers.
The first, smaller part is the more useful. Holstun makes some telling points against the revisionists, such as the way they define pre-revolutionary ideology so broadly that any opposition to the king before 1640 can be defined out of existence. Because no one broke absolutely with the views of the past, we can supposedly argue that none broke at all. He notes the way revisionists euphemize Stuart censorship, how they crudely psychoanalyze revolutionaries or reduce their concerns to envy, and how they describe the English revolution as a "war of three kingdoms" "instead of complex societies in a structured hierarchy dominated by England." In his critique of the New Historicists Holstun aptly focuses on their obsession with power, on the grotesque or barbaric gesture (such as the execution of Damiens). His defence of Class Struggle is also interesting, though less original in his reservations about the base and superstructure model. Sartre, rather unusually, serves as an inspiration and there is some interesting criticisms of Habermas.
The second part is much more disappointing. Each of the five chapters concentrates on a series of texts. Instead of advancing beyond previous Marxist arguments, there is a tendency to simple recapitulate old verities. There is a long summary and paraphrase which becomes increasingly tedious, while there is little new evidence brought forth. Meanwhile the relationship between the anti-Buckinghamites, the Agitators, Trapnel, Sexby and Winstanley and the larger population is never made clear. Holstun could have said more, in his discussion of the Agitators, about their suggestions for redistributing land. The chapter on Trapnel, included in order to bring some discussion of gender, does not succeed in this, since female Fifth Monarchy prophets were very untypical of their sex. Moreover there is a rather sentimental appreciation of Baptism and Quakerism as radical movements. He cites E.P. Thompson's The Making of the English Working Class, to emphasize the complex heritage of Dissent. Yet Thompson's chapter "The Transforming power of the Cross," emphasizes Methodism's philistinism, its reactionary and sycophantic nature, its hatred of pleasure and curiosity. Holstun also argues that without the experience of their female prophets Mary Wollstonecraft and her feminism could not have existed. Perhaps, but the absence of these movements in France did not stop the Marquis de Condorcet and the radical Herbertistes. The chapter on Sexby is actually more nuanced, agreeing that Sexby's anti-Cromwellian pamphlet, Killing no Murder, is still within the Protestant theory of anti-tyrannical writing. (But one should not forget that the Sexby chapter concludes with some fatuous comments on assasination.) The chapter on Winstanley also provides some useful refutations on Winstanely as a minor, time-bound, envious, totalitarian misogynist. Ultimately, there is a major problem with tone: Holstun always finds a radical movement or an inspiring vision from the past. Ultimately, this optimistic note rings hollow.
Written with meticulous attention to historical detail.......2001-01-23
In Ehud's Dagger: Class Struggle In The English Revolution, James Holstun surveys 17th century England and the rise of capitalist influence and the first anti-capitalist revolution by working men and women seeking to create a libertarian future and escape the hardships of an industrializing society. Holstun writes with meticulous attention to historical detail, evoking the sense of peering into the past through a window in time and surveying John Felton's assassination of the Duke of Buckingham, the political debates in the Puritan New Model Army, the anti-Cromwellian prophesying of the Fifth Monarchist prophetess, Anna Trapnel, and more. Ehud's Dagger is a scholarly, engaging, accessible, and highly recommended contribution to the annals of British history in terms of class struggle and the emergence of an industrial society.
