Everyone with even a causal interest in business valuation respects Shannon Pratt. He lives up to his reputation in The Market Approach. My favorite is the contrast and comparison of the different data available for private transactions.

If there is any criticism, it has to be his subtle efforts to market Pratt's Stats. No one would blame him too much for that.

This book only contains the present value calculations for the various items on a balance sheet. It is an introductory book on what happens to the present value if the market rate changes by 200 basis points. Unfortunately the book does not touch on bank valuation, but is a primer on market valuation used in interest rate risk analysis.

Management literature is full of examinations of so-called managerial excellence: firms such as GM, IBM, and DuPont have been managed in an exemplary fashion which others might emulate. Works such as Peters & Waterman's In Search of Excellence have extolled these firms as models for the future. In his new book, Ghosh responds to the hyberbole in this literature by taking a hard, analytical look at the real financial performance of such firms. His study of the financial performance of these well-known firms during the last twenty-five years (1960-1984), brings out significant findings that are invaluable to the investing public as well as to finance and management analysts. Taking a list of these "best-run" companies and a control sample from the Fortune 500, the author applies sophisticated statistical and econometric tools to analyze their performance, comparing the "excellent" firms with the control group. By using these analytical techniques, Ghosh is able to determine whether these firms were indeed excellent from both the management's and stockholders' point of view. Over the period studied here, Ghosh discovers that the "excellence" of these firms has been transitory at best, that in most respects the control group has surpassed the "excellent group" in financial performance and market valuation in the long run, and that the excellent group has not exceeded the performance or the market generally. Given these results, Ghosh has called into question the whole 1980s notion of "excellence" (what it is and what it is not) and which firms are to be emulated for the long-term good of the U.S. economy. This book will have wide public appeal and be of special interest to scholars in management, finance, and economic history, as well as to financial and management analysts.

A picaresque, following 'Soapey' Sponge - a sportsman but not quite a gentleman - as he foxhunts and fortune-hunts his way around England. He exploits (as Surtees satirises) the failings of those he encounters - Waffles (spendthrift), Jawleyford (humbug), Puffington (parvenu), Jogglebury (foolish), Scattercash (debauched)... Only coarse Lord Scamperdale consistently detests him. People invite him to stay but struggle to evict him. His selfishness diminishes only on meeting & falling for lovely Lucy Glitters while hunting . Lacks sympathetic characters, silly names and voices abound and overlong given its lightness and looseness. Terrific foxhunting detail & a delightlful, surprising ending.

John Tyler Bonner's career as a biologist spans an incredible era of ever-accelerating advances and complexity in science. Divided into chapters covering two decades each, his account mixes personal memoir with the story of his research. He specialized in slime molds, although his interest roamed throughout all biological disciplines.

Young scientists reading Bonner's book will both smile and grimace. His account of his reports fifty years ago to the NSF regarding his grant will surely produce both reactions at the same time: "Things have not worked out well. I have tried this, that, and the other, and nothing has really worked." The reply was, "Don't worry about it---this is the way research goes sometimes. Maybe next year you will have better luck." My husband, a cloud physicist for over twenty-five years, is utterly astonished at such an exchange.

Bonner writes clearly and sometimes jokily, in true scientific fashion, without much color and brio to hold a reader's interest. Nevertheless he has lived in a fascinating time, has seen the germination and flowering of many ideas that have revolutionized biology, and for this reason alone his book is worth reading.

A Gentle Memoir of a Lifelong Passion.......2002-06-26

John Tyler Bonner's lifelong passion with slime molds makes for more interesting and delightful reading than one would at first expect in Lives of a Biologist (Adventures in a Century of Extraordinary Science). His life story includes many wonderful anecdotes that go beyond the world of science and include such a unusual assembly of characters as Trotsky, Harpo Marx and Evelyn Waugh. The joy of this book, though, is the biological experiences and this will be a pleasure regardless of one's level of biological background. The excitement of discovery and learning comes through clearly in these pages and the amazing transitions in this field over the past century are presented in a readable and fascinating manner. The Best "Art of War".......2006-11-25

I've read a few different translations of the Art of War and I found this one to be the most accessible. I'm not a scholar of ancient Chinese, so I have no idea whether or not it's the most accurate translation, but, for me, it is the easiest to get into. Not only is the translated text highly readable, but the essays included with the translation are brilliant. The essays bring a whole new level of understanding to the text. With this translation and the accompanying articles, you have a book that can change not only the way you think about conflict, but the way you engage in it as well.

Mixed Bag.......2004-08-04

I'm new to "The Art Of War" but after going to the local bookstore I decided to pick up this copy. It has a small size, is made of high quality materials and appears to have a lot of useful additional information. And for all that the price is very nice, even when paying full price. When I began to read this I found that while the translation is supposed to be sparse and allow the original text to be read as closely as possible in another language the actual text is so spartan to be nearly unreadable by someone who is new to the text. Even when reading the portion with commentary the commentary was almost as spartan. What I have ended up doing is reading this along with another version and I have found that I am getting quite a bit more out of it than I would have with just one version or the other alone. The introduction and essays are well written but I my review is to point out that this version of "The Art Of War" is not for "newbies". If you have read this before and are looking for more this is for you, if you are new to this text I would suggest picking up another version before tackling this one.

I like most of it but at times it was hard to fully understand. I am going to read it again and I hope to better gain more of it the second tie around.

I don't really understand all the reviews about Sun Tzu's work. People saying that this one or that one is closer to the original; are there really that many experts in ancient Chinese out there. How can anyone say which is the best translation unless they are personally familiar with the original, in the original Chinese, and if that the case they should write their own version.

Batteries included.......2003-01-06

I always enjoy a good philosophy book, and this version of the Ping-fa (Art of War) hit home for me. Although a bit different from the commonly accepted Samuel Griffith 1963 version in the sense the words are translated more literally from the original chinese, it's still not that hard to read.
Not only that, but the essays do well to reinforce some of Sun Tzu's more important ideologies (i.e. Shih).
This version was well done and still honest to the Chinese version, so that's a plus in my eye.
I'd advise the reader, should you want to really grasp the book's key concepts, that you read the essays in Section 2 before the text itself, as it makes more sense in that order.

The Denma Group has taken a terse and somewhat cryptic ancient text and contextualized it for modern ears. Their most brilliant addition - simple and relevant commentary that guides readers across the sometimes confusing conceptual terrains that the text presents. The audio version is nearly perfect, I've listened to it hundreds of times.
