Book Description
Providing a systematic and self-contained treatment of excitation, propagation and re- emission of electromagnetic waves guided by density ducts in magnetized plasmas, this book describes in detail the theoretical basis of the electrodynamics of ducts. The classical dielectric-waveguide theory in open guiding systems in magnetoplasma is subjected to rigorous generalization. The authors emphasize the conceptual physical and mathematical aspects of the theory, while demonstrating its applications to problems encountered in actual practice. The opening chapters of the book discuss the underlying physical phenomena, outline some of the results obtained in natural and artificial density ducts, and describe the basic theory crucial to understanding the remainder of the book. The more specialized and complex topics dealt with in subsequent chapters include the theory of guided wave propagation along axially uniform ducts, finding the field excited by the source in the presence of a duct, excitation of guided modes, the asymptotic theory of wave propagation along axially nonuniform ducts, and mode re-emission from a duct. The full wave theory is used throughout most of the book to ensure consistency, and the authors start with simpler cases and gradually increase the complexity of the treatment.
Book Description
The first commercially published fat novel, (or Schmalzroman), this book sold out its first printing in three weeks, and was promptly abandoned by its original publisher. Was this fat-prejudice, or just another example of corporate shit-headedness?
Customer Reviews:
Ahhh what a story.......2007-01-06
Pinkwater has a great way of telling a story. Just enough Chicago to keep the listener listening. Why aren't these in audiobooks? Whatever happened to Chinwag Theatre. Ahhh what a story.
Best Fat-Afterlife Book I've Read.......2002-10-29
I'm a big fan of originality, and this book didn't disappoint. while it seemed to make a lot out of a little, seemed a bit 'padded' (HA) at times, and contained perhaps the worst sci-fi short story I've ever read (One word: wereakeets), I nonetheless chuckled all the way through. Hardly great literature, but it achieved its intended effect. It made me laugh.
Uneven adult novel; Power to the Pulchritudious!.......2001-12-15
Daniel Pinkwater is best known for his childrens' and young adults' books. Really odd and off-beat stuff, best enjoyed by kids destined not to be consumer drones and conformists.
I once talked with an editor who knew Mr. Pinkwater. I asked him what he was up to. "He's said he's doing a book for adults," replied the fellow, "Which could be really scary, because it could have sex in it. Can you imagine Pinkwater writing about sex?" Hmmmm . . .
_The Afterlife Diet_ is indeed his first novel for grown-ups (although he's written for adults before, in his collections of fine essays and reminscences). It could be called a "fat lib" book. Most of its characters are great big folks. Some are alive, some are dead. We see them dealing with the afterlife (it's segregated; The Other Side for hefty folks appears to be an indifferently run Borscht Belt resort), with dating, and careers. It does have sex, although nothing explicit, although we learn enough to know that it takes place in a tub of hot water infused with hot-dog spices.
There are a lot of cool characters and situations here here, such as a psychiatrist who conducts therapy sessions in a deli, and a crazed fat-doctor. A lot of the pain expressed must come from personal experience. But a good chunk of the book reads as though it were filler. There are bits about a gummy alien, and an outline for a sprawling SF epic set in the vast parking lot of a interstellar retail complex. Much of this is funny, but it doesn't quite fit in.
I ultimately enjoyed this one, and hope The Captain writes another book for grownups.
Not for young kids.......2001-05-09
Just to make it clear to kids and parents: this is NOT one of Pinkwater's whimsical books for kids. My eleven-year-old son recently ordered it from Amazon, having lived on a diet of Pinkwater for the last couple of months. Thrilled to receive it after much anticipation, he started to read. A few minutes later he brought it to his Mom, pointing out the words "f*ck" and "bastard" in the first few pages. He was *very* disappointed, not so much because of the words, but because it caught him by surprise; he felt let down. "It's **Pinkwater!** What happened?!"
I'm buying it back from him so he can spend his money elsewhere. (If I like it I'll post another review saying what Dad thinks of the book.)
Three cheers for Pinkwater.......2000-12-23
I snatched this book off the shelf after hearing about it on NPR. While others had complaints, I wasn't dissapointed at all. Pinkwater recognizes that the pressure to lose weight can come from anywhere, especially other fat people. The worst are always those who've lost weight and want to help the rest of us to be the wonderful thin people they are. He also shows us that beyond the social stigma and constant ridicule are real people living lives just like the thin people.
Ok, so the plot was, well, I don't remember it well enough to comment. However, the characters are still with me.
I was very upset when the first edition went out of print. I'm thrilled it's back.
Book Description
Following the discovery of America by Columbus in 1492, European colonists brought their system of fortification to the New World in an attempt to ensure their safety and consolidate their conquests. French and British explorers came later to North America, and thus the establishment of their sizeable settlements only got under way during the 17th century. The inhabitants of New France built elaborate fortifications to protect their towns and cities. This book provides a detailed examination of the defenses of four of them: Québec, Montréal and Louisbourg in Canada, and New Orleans in Louisiana.
Customer Reviews:
when the french came to New France they built to stay.......2005-04-23
This book by Rene Chartrand is a delight read. Most informative about the fortified towns the French built in New France. I found it peticularly interesting since no other work on the subject exists. Quebec and Louisbourg being historic sights of American military history have always facinated me. Well illustrated and well detailed for the novice to read and understand.
However, no critic is truly satisfied, and I have my wants.
1. I wish the author had illustrated and detailed the cannons the French used for their fortifications.
2. I wish he had provided a map of the continent showing where the cities are.
3. The author illustrated the outlying forts of Montreal, ( fort Senneville, fort de la Montagne, and fort Longeuill), I wish he had done similar work with the Louisbourg Royal Battery and Island Battery, rather than use period illustration. Just as I wish he had detailed a few of the bastions and provided a map showing the relaiton of the fortifications to each other.
This is a must for anyone interested in this period.
Now if the author could go on and do a sequel of French forts of North America with Fort Duqusne, Fort Niagare, Fort Carrillon (Ticonderoga). Perhaps also the English forts such as Fort Pitt and Fort William Henry.
Book Description
England's seventeenth-century colonial empire in North America and the Caribbean was created by migration. The quickening pace of this essential migration is captured in the London port register of 1635, the largest extant port register for any single year in the colonial period and unique in its record of migration to America and to the European continent. Alison Games analyzes the 7,500 people who traveled from London in that year, recreating individual careers, exploring colonial societies at a time of emerging viability, and delineating a world sustained and defined by migration.
The colonial travelers were bound for the major regions of English settlement--New England, the Chesapeake, the West Indies, and Bermuda--and included ministers, governors, soldiers, planters, merchants, and members of some major colonial dynasties--Winthrops, Saltonstalls, and Eliots. Many of these passengers were indentured servants. Games shows that however much they tried, the travelers from London were unable to recreate England in their overseas outposts. They dwelled in chaotic, precarious, and hybrid societies where New World exigencies overpowered the force of custom. Patterns of repeat and return migration cemented these inchoate colonial outposts into a larger Atlantic community. Together, the migrants' stories offer a new social history of the seventeenth century. For the origins and integration of the English Atlantic world, Games illustrates the primary importance of the first half of the seventeenth century.

Migration and early America.......2007-05-26
A Ph.d. dissertation by Alison Games "that turned into a book," Migration and the Origins of the English Atlantic World introduces a novel approach to studying English Colonial history. Insisting that migration played a more significant role in early Atlantic regional and national settlements than previously thought, the author explores and amalgamates common threads to modify previous notions on the origins of English cultural norms in colonial America. Based heavily on the 1635 London Port register, the author chronicles the migration patterns of over 7500 Englishmen and women who moved to the New World.
After establishing a rather dense narrative in the introductory chapters, we learn, in depth, about the travel patterns and challenges of those who braved the Atlantic world. "A spectrum of experience," notes Games, "characterized early colonial settlements, and the intent of my approach is to delineate both the variety of colonial societies and the common processes by which they were formed." (10) The discussions of the aforementioned vignettes are dispersed successfully among several geographic regions such as New England, the Caribbean, and the Chesapeake.
The author provides extensive research of church registers, court records, and other primary sources to advance a careful argument that "common processes" of Old World travelers established the foundations of early American family life. She also correctly highlights the fact that movement between the New and Old World was hectic, and in constant motion, with migrants moving several times once they entered colonial America. The only exception to this argument, which Games downplays, is the large contingent of migrants who moved directly to New England from the Old World and settled there.
In a peripheral exploration, Games expounds on colonial Puritanism and discusses the rise of church membership in the New World. The former focuses on spiritual modifications, or simply changes, that distinguished colonial Puritans from Old World Puritans. These arguments, however, seem more suited, and appropriate, for a study of colonial religious practices and developments. The marriage that Games makes between Puritanism and migration is not explicitly clear to the reader. In fact, these arguments would contrast nicely with Barry Levy's study of Quakerism and the relationship of the modern American household.
Another distraction in this work is the overabundance of statistics that tend to bog down the reader. While useful and relevant to advancing secondary arguments, the author seems to deploy statistical evidence in way that negates her main themes about migration. Along the same lines, the work would have benefited from more research on the geographic origins, and familial ties, of travelers prior to their departure from London in 1635. The author does touch on this some, but the reader is left wondering if there was a more pronounced historical connection between familial origin in the Old World and settlement in the new World.
Nonetheless, this work provides a new paradigm, and a neglected approach, to studying early English migration and its impact on the New World. The author also provides clear evidence that travel patterns played an important, sometimes subtle and other times dramatic, impact on travelers' destiny in colonial America. The work, however, falls short of convincing the reader that migration patterns were the main historical ingredient for determining settlements in the Atlantic region. This work is most appropriate for those who have a keen understanding of colonial history and an interest in migration history.
The making of the English Atlanic world.......2002-09-26
A scholarly investigation into the Atlantic voyages and destinations of those listed in the 1635 London Port Register. The author follows their careers in the extant colonial and English records before and after their voyages. Excellent insights into the English colonies in New England, Virginia, Bermuda, and Providence Island in the Caribbean.
Questions of why these travelers left, how they traveled, what they found when they arrived, how they prospered or failed, and those that returned to their homeland or traveled to other colonies are all dealt with. Excellent sections on the age and sex compositions of the different destinations under study and the effects of this on their colonial development.
Lots of information on the flight of the puritans from Archbishop Laud and the different gathered church societies they established in the puritan colonies. The continuous migration over the life cycle of these English travelers within England, to London, across the Atlantic and within and between colonies is the ongoing theme of the book.
outstanding work of original research.......2001-11-12
This book by Alison Games, based on her PhD dissertation if I am to understand correctly, is an outstanding piece of original research. Games successfully combines her torturous mining of the archives of the UK, Bermuda, US & elsewhere, with a good understanding of statistics, with intellectually honest speculations about the data (where it exists & where it does not, carefully showing where each hold), with a comprehension of the sweep of history in which this work fits, with a fine writing style. This book is denser than most colonial history, but it is worth pushing through that density for the unique insights the history carries with it & the stimulation of mind the book provides to the reader. Fundamentally, as Games shows, history is about ordinary human beings. The aggregation of their actions is what makes something worthy of the historians attention. In Games work, we can see the individual actions of UK "citizens" in the 1500s & 1600s in making the trek to colonies. This book should be on anyone's required reading list for understanding what happened in the British colonies early-on.

Basically Hollow.......2004-03-19
The book is quite bias toward the theory of a literally hollow earth and never wavers from that conviction. But in case you don't already know this, there is a big difference between the histories, stories and legends of many subterranean abodes and the modern theory of a literally hollow, like a ping pong ball, planet. I wish I could say that I know of other great books on this general subject but I would be lying if I said that. I've read about a half dozen books dedicated to this subject which is about all your likely to find in nonfiction and I've found all of them quite flawed in various ways. One of the best articles I've read on this subject is available online at the spectrum news. An interview with Red Elk. This is a difficult thing to really sink your teeth into because if you do your probably too gullible.
Close, but way off..........2000-09-03
There are holes at the north and south poles. Just because everyone is saying they're a 100 miles across, you'll probably never believe it, but there is one right on the location of bentley's subglacial trench in Antarctica. Believe it or not, there are much stranger things. In this book, there is one supposed photo taken by apollo showing an opening, but it is really a photo of Olympus mons of mars. It might be a mistake on his part (and not intentional) but either way, it makes the idea of a hole look dumb. I even think Olympus mons might be a hole and not a volcano. The mist blocks the entrance. Another thing is, this guy talks about Cyrus Teed and his inverted planet theory. (that we live inside and the earth is concave) He goes out of his way to make Teed look crazy. At the time I read this book, I was only beginning to research this stuff. Thank the Lord that I even heard the truth before I died. The planet is concave. Teed was right and the whole world laughed him to scorn in 1905. Not only is Teed right, but also the north and south poles are gateways to another planet. That is all you need to know. Do not buy this book, it is the same lies that are on the net.
this book is *very* good!.......2000-06-30
I saw this book sitting on the shelf of the new age section at a bookstore and was immediately drawn to it. I'd never heard of such a theory but the description of the book seemed interesting.
I must say that after reading it from cover to cover in just one day, I am a believer that the earth really may be hollow and there is actually alot of evidence to sustain this.
Things such as writings from the earliest civilations, the aurora borealis, UFOs, giants, fairies, holes at the poles, and all kinds phenomenon, are covered in this book - not to mention, the idea that the earth's interior is solid is only a theory and has never actually been proven.
Highley reccommend!

I BOUGHT THIS BOOK SO THAT I COULD FIND PHOTOS OF CHAMP & NESSIE BUT 'UNEXPLAINED: MYSTERIES OF THE UNIVERSE' OFFERS MUCH MORE.......2007-01-01
IN A NUTSHELL: VERY MUCH A FUN READ
'Unexplained: Mysteries of the Universe by Colin Wilson' touches on many of the best known and most thought provoking mysteries that sit right out there in the real world of the past and the present. The book, though short [40 pages] is in over-sized format, and is well illustrated in full color. The large pictures, short text and mysterious subject matter make this a very attractive reader for young readers as they will be drawn into the topic and they will be able to finish it in one sitting quite easily.
WHAT 'Unexplained: Mysteries of the Universe', by Colin Wilson, IS ALL ABOUT:
ORGANIZATION:
With each mystery representing a short chapter; all of which include an introduction in large print, full-color pictures and illustrations with captions and some text including conclusions, the reader will have no trouble getting into the subject.
AN ABRIDGED LIST OF TOPICS: ['' depicts actual name of chapter]
PYRAMIDS -- WHO BUILT THEM AND HOW?
EASTER ISLAND -- A MYSTERY SINCE NO-ONE TODAY CAN READ THE LANGUAGE
CURSES -- FROM THE PYRAMIDS AND OTHER SOURCES
FORGOTTEN TECHNOLOGIES -- COMPUTERS FOUND THAT ARE 3,000 YEARS OLD
'STRANGE DISAPPEARANCES' -- PLANES AND SHIPS VANISH IN THE BERMUDA TRIANGLE
DINOSAURS BECOMING EXTINCT
'MONSTERS OF THE DEEP' - LOCH NESS MONSTER, CHAMP & MORE [the reason I got this book] includes photos of Champ and Nessie.
'SCARY MONSTERS' - YETTI, WILD PANTHERS IN ENGLAND TODAY
BOTTOM LINE: MORE OF A PLACE TO START THAN FINISH
This interesting survey of unexplained mysteries brushes over dozens of interesting phenomenon and provides one with either an interesting way to pass an hour or so, or a place from which to begin serious study or research from on these very compelling topics.
A classic style good book on a usually misunderstood subject.......2000-06-28
Colin Wilson is a past master at this subject--any "fringe" or, to put it using his term, "outsider" subject, has been dealt with by this author with a touch of particular genius, leading to the formation of quite a reputation for him over the years. There is always a substantial body of unexplained and mystifying information in human existence, and this is often of a nature that withstands the sharpness of the attacks, at explaining it, by the current sceptics or "experts" of the age. The result is that it then passes on into folklore or legend, which in no way affects the character or appeal of such information. This holds true whether the age is of high technology, as at present, or that of the horse and cart--which is still extant in many parts of the world. This book is just one classic and well carried out attempt at trying to meaningfully codify and explain such phenomena.
