Book Description
Productivity of inputs is an important determinant of the competitiveness of firms in national and international markets. Productivity growth arises from deliberate decisions to innovate but the technological opportunities could be such that different inputs would have different rates of growth. Previous literature has mostly concentrated on labor productivity but empirical studies indicate that productivity of capital is also increasing. One of the objectives of this book is to examine the difference or bias in the productivity growth of the two inputs.
In this book, application of this general approach to study of biased technical change is developed and new empirical results presented for both macroeconomies and microeconomic firms.

Book Description
Macroeconomic adjustment and sectoral reforms have strongly modified the framework for rural development in Central America. Local producers have only received marginal benefits from the liberalization of markets and the privatization of financial and commercial services. This book offers a structural analysis of agrarian policies in Central America and their impact on production conditions and farmers' welfare. Segmentation of rural factor and product markets and institutional failures have imposed severe constraints on the effectiveness of the applied policy instruments.

More Useful Than The Study Guide.......2007-06-14
I took a fundamentals of chemistry class at a community college during the summer semester where the required text was the Foundations of College Chemistry, 11th Edition. It had been nearly 10 years since I last took a chemistry class so I bought the Study Guide and Solutions Manual to help me out. I found the Solutions Manual to be 1000x more useful than the Study Guide because the Solutions Manual provided the answers to the chapter questions from the textbook AND HOW THEY GOT THEIR ANSWERS. Having these solutions handy helped me comprehend the chemistry questions a lot faster since I could check my answers right away as I was doing the homework. I didn't use the Study Guide much at all. I didn't have the time to work on the additional problems offered in the Study Guide, so the Study Guide was useless to me.

Book Description
A shift from government oversight to private sector self-regulation appears to be the future of environmental management. This will be a complex and complicated transition, as individual companies attempt to balance their needs against that of the surrounding communities - and world. Voluntary Environmental Management: The Inevitable Future explores how business and industry are preparing for this dramatic shift in responsibility and accountability. John Morelli pinpoints companies that have already adopted environmental auditing and management tools; examines the deficiencies of government-imposed environmental regulations; and shows how businesses can become more proactive in monitoring and managing their environmentally affective activities. The role of global marketplace forces receives substantial emphasis in Voluntary Environmental Management: The Inevitable Future, especially in light of the widespread international acceptance of new ISO 14000 standards.

Book Description
This book is a timely review of recent advances on the construction and functions of organic thin films by a variety of techniques. The component molecules are relatively simple ones with self-organizing properties, i.e., ordered molecular assembly characteristics. The contents are arranged from the fundamental concepts of molecular assembly of self-organizing molecules to the potential biological applications of protein assemblies, supramolecular species.
Recently, many promising applications for new electric, magnetic or optical devices, biomimetic membranes etc. have been the subject of investigation. However, fundamental studies on molecular assembly characteristics and functions for mono-, bi- and multi-layers, Langmuir-Blodgett films are indispensable to future technological innovations for molecular electronic devices and biological sensors.
Book Description
The Siamese Connection is the most bizarre tale about the most bizarre couple you'll ever meet. High-flying humor explodes from every page; surprises and twists clobber the reader from start to finish. You've never met a pair like Drake and DeeDee Pennwalt. Fascinating characters abound: Mad Madge Milliken and Just-Plain-Fledge Martin are the nation's two pet TV talk show hosts, who constantly snipe and snap at each other from opposite poles of the TV spectrum. David Letterman suddenly finds himself embroiled in a Mad Madge Milliken Strikes Again! episode that scoffs at all logic and reason. Rod Blazer is a TV news anchor who slips his moorings through an ill-fated encounter with Mad Madge Milliken. (Any encounter with Mad Madge Milliken is ill-fated.) Mim Leslie, Hollywood's hot tomato, known as "the watched sex-pot that's constantly boiling." Through this maelstrom of madness weaves a fable of mystery, mysticism, and witticism. Don't shilly-shally, join the festival!
Customer Reviews:
Can it get any worse?.......2004-08-20
Having read several books about the Chosin Campaign, I was pleased to finally get the story of what occurred on the East side of the reservoir. Mr. Appleman exaustingly found the details through official Army and Marine combat reports as well as listening to the survivors of this tragic event. The 31st RCT was doomed almost before they started and poor weather, traffic jams, raw Korean recruits, bad luck and command mistakes caused its demise. The Soldiers fought bravely and tenaciously but being out-numbered by as much as 10 to 1 was just too much to overcome.
The author has given us a clear, detailed, hour by hour account
of this heroic but heartbreaking episode in American military history.
Hung Out to Die.......2004-04-01
Never served. I've read plenty of war stories telling of brave men though. This story of the Army's fight trying to get back from the east side of the Chosin Reservoir is the saddest story I've ever read.
Bad plan. Frigid weather. Four straight days and nights under attack in the cold. No help available. Get back on your own, guys. Frostbite. All out of bandages, gasoline, ammunition. Then death in the cold cold night so close to getting back.
I've read this book twice and it effected me even more the second time.

Honest, In Depth and Heartbreaking........2001-11-21
I've long been very familiar with the 1st Marine Division's history at the Chosin, but until I read Roy Appleman's book I didn't realize just how much I didn't know about the Army's side of the conflict. This tale of desperation and bravery should be required reading amongst all American service personnel and perhaps even in High Schools. Excellently written, this book holds your attention despite the huge amount of very detailed geographic and unit data presented.
Infantryman's War.......2001-06-13
I've read a lot of military history over the years, though I'm definitely not as well-read as some. This book and the others in Appleman's Korean War series really helped me understand small unit operations. They can be dry and a little tough going, but if you give them a chance you may discover a side of battle often overlooked. Making great use of original after action reports as well as interviews and the more common types of sources, Appleman reminds us that (unlike the movies) often ammunition and rations run out and what happens when they do. (Real men have to be sent to get more.) He shows us how and why troops are moved from one nondescript hill to another. (Almost never due to command brilliance.) And better than anyone else he shows us how great battles are built up from squad and platoon actions.
You may lose track of which regiment "L Company" is a part of, but you will come to care what happened to L Company.
A reader from St.John's, Newfoundland.......2000-06-29
A very engrossing account. Despite the level of detail on the geography, personnel and their units it holds your attention. Also provides comment on areas of uncertainty over what actually happened. One of the most successful books on warfare in putting you there - to the point where it was difficult to read ( in this case an indication of the author's success ). One really sensed the isolation of the units and the desperate situation in which they found themselves. Recommended.

Martin Russ's controversial book Breakout: The Chosin Reservoir Campaign, Korea 1950 tells the riveting story of how 12,000 Army personnel and Marines fought their way out of an encirclement by more than 60,000 Chinese soldiers. A Marine wounded in combat during the Korean War, Russ writes with a passion for the men who endured freezing temperatures and scaled treacherous mountains while continuing to strike the enemy as they advanced toward safety.
While many accounts of modern war bog readers down in a morass of military and administrative details, Russ's history so clearly distinguishes the various units, locations, and personalities that shaped the campaign that it could easily be compared with the finest novels of battle, including Michael Shaara's The Killer Angels. Expertly moving between American, Chinese, and Korean points of view, Russ argues that the Marines were trapped at Chosin because of the arrogance of Douglas MacArthur, the incompetence of the U.S. Army, and the disciplined planning of the Chinese generals.
Celebrated for his brilliant war memoir, The Last Parallel, Russ has provoked criticism for his tendency in Breakout to disparage the U.S. Army. However, his quotations of numerous dispatches showing Marine commanders' concern about advancing into the Chosin area, as well as his consistent portrayal of Army officers' ineptitude, lend credence to his argument that it was the particular esprit de corps of the Marines that prevented the disintegration of American forces in the freezing wastes of North Korea. --James Highfill
Book Description
On General Douglas MacArthur's orders, a force of 12,000 U.S. Marines were marching north to the Yalu river in late November 1950. These three regiments of the 1st Marine Division--strung out along eighty miles of a narrow mountain road--soon found themselves completely surrounded by 60,000 Chinese soldiers. Despite being given up for lost by the military brass, the 1st Marine Division fought its way out of the frozen mountains, miraculously taking thier dead and wounded with them as they ran the gauntlet of unceasing Chinese attacks.
This is the gripping story that Martin Russ tells in his extraordinary book. Breakout is an unforgettable portrayal of the terror and courage of men as they face sudden death, making the bloody battles of the Korean hills and valleys come alive as they never have before.
"Magnificent . . . [Russ] seamlessly weaves the stories of many men, units and battles, day and night, into a coherent picture."--Chicago Tribune
"Engrossing . . . Vivid, at times powerful; emotional but unsentimental."--The New York Times
Customer Reviews:
An Unrivaled Account of Heroism in Battle.......2007-06-22
Breakout is an amazing treatment of the US Marine Corps' combat at the Chosin Reservoir during the Korean War. Without losing much in the way of detail, insight or set-up, Russ takes little time to jump into the heart of the battle. His descriptions of combat are among the best I have ever read--incredibly raw and detailed. Russ also provides a glimpse into the character of so many of the brave Marines who fought and, in many cases, died at Chosin. Without doubt, the USMC is among the finest fighting forces to ever put boot to earth. And while the Chosin Reservoir campaign has more than its share of hard-luck and tragedy, it may also be the best example of exactly what it means to be a Leatherneck. A truly excellent read!
Amazing part of history that almost nobody knows about. Simply incredible. .......2007-02-22
This part of forgotten history is simply incredible. I didn't learn much about it in school, high school or college. My father was at Chosin, M16 AA quad 50 gunner, and he never talked about the war. A visit to the book store and you'll see shelves of WWI books, hundreds of WWII books, an entire section of Vietnam books and almost nothing about Korea. Every book I have on the Korean War I had to order on-line. How crazy is that!
Anyway, this book really paints an incredible story on the battle field. I still can't believe I'm reading non-fiction, the stories are that unbelievable. I turn a page and "Holly Crap!" then turn another and "Holly Crap!!" again. It's like that cover to cover. I'm still shell shocked. If I had read this book prior to seeing the TV show M.A.S.H. I would have put my foot through the set on the first episode. No wonder my father NEVER said anything. I also want to say that soldiers on both sides were incredibly brave. I would like to read a book telling the Chinese side of things too. The Marines even noted that the Chinese soldiers were very brave. Thousands of them lying on the field of battle each died facing the enemy. How do officers instill such discipline and dedication? Heroes on both sides.
Hell we are not retreating, we are fighting in another direction!.......2007-01-12
My dad served in the 1st Marine division in the Korea War. The Marines first help stop the tide of the North Korean invasion. The Marines then help stabilize a front to protect all that was left, the Pusan Perimeter. Next the Marines were called to storm ashore during the famous Inchon landings. They then liberated Seoul. The Marines then reembarked for a cruise that landed them on the opposite side of the Korean Peninsula. There they went up into the mountains. The Chinese soon intervened into the War. The Chinese sent millions of troops in to Korea. It was not long before the Chinese sheer numbers overwhelmed some U.S. Army units and others had to withdraw to keep from getting surrounded.
The Chinese were to also cut off the Marines from their logistics base. Cut off in the mountains the Chinese the figured they would soon destroy the Marines. They were wrong but it took a lot of hard fighting and the support of the Air Force for the Marines and the Army units that were also presence to fight their way out.
My dad told me the Air force saved them.
The marines had built a forward airfield that turned out to be so critical. Because of this forward air strip, the Air force was able to fly in supplies when they were cut off. The Air Force also was able to provided close support missions. The cargo planes after unloading, were able to the fly many of the wounded out. The men were soon on the way to hospitals as far away as Japan and the USA. One of the missions involved dropping bridge sections to replace part of a bridge that had been destroyed by the Chinese. This support by the Air Force enable them to fight their way south.
Captain Frank Mayer was sent to find out what was happening in the battalion's rear by Lt. Col. Roise.
"Mayer. 'I started down the road by myself in the dark. Not a smart move, but I was still under the illusion that the 'rear' was relatively safe. Then I began to worry about being mistaken for an infiltrator. Just then I ran into a group who turned out to be the last stragglers from Hill 1403. They said the Chinese were right behind them. I peered over their shoulders into the gloom and got off the dumbest remark of the evening; 'I don't see any Chinamen.'
One of the stragglers said 'Just walk down that road and you'll see all the Chinamen you ever want to see.' That's when I decided I had gone far enough.
'What did you find out?' asked the colonel.
'The Chinese are behind us.'
'What else?'
'What else? Sir, that's pretty big news by itself!'
Colonel Roise replied 'We'll take care of them.' "
The Marines did take care of them.
Only remember the Korea War has never official ended.
The Chinese still know this.
Their puppet Kim Jong II is building Nukes and has ties with Iran.
There is still only a ceasefire that stopped the war in 1953.
Today there are miles of barbwire, mines, artillery and armed troops still separating North from South Korea.
The most dangerous thing now is Kim Jong II has nukes and he has always sold off ever weapon system he has to terrorist and terrorist countries like Iran.
One day the Marines may have to return and deal with North Korea and China. Lets hope these hero's are like the hero's we had in the 1950's.
Semper Fi.
Wow, what a book!.......2006-04-26
I was a History major as an undergrad, so I've read my fair share of books on wars from Carthaginian to Vietnam, but this is far, far, far and away the best I have ever read. I've never, ever been more amazed in my life by the telling of a war story. I've read Pork Chop Hill, Colder Than Hell, and one or two other Korean war books, all good, but the problem the Korean war always had for me was the lack of a sense of closure. This is certainly not the fault of the authors- if I remember my History classes correctly they pretty much had no choice in the matter- it ending in a draw and all. However, with the Chosin Resovoir, much like Dunkirk, the retreat was so necessary and so miraculous that it comes across more like a victory, and the individual stories transcend the inconclusive nature of the war.
The book, for me at least, was so real that the cold and danger seemed almost tangible, as well as the confusion. In fact, for me the only weakness was the detail causes the reader, unless he/she is particulary studious, to lose track of the players. I read it for enjoyment, but in a class I'd have needed to take notes.
My drafted relatives were all either in WWII or Vietnam, and for our family the Korean war really was the forgotten war, but I'm glad this book is out there to bring it to remembrance, and to note the horror and heroism of such an important part of world history.
"This is a work of fiction".......2005-12-13
I like Non-Fiction military books and I was looking for battle accounts of the Korean War. This book seems pretty promising with over 100 customer reviews; After reading one review saying the book was a work of fiction, I went to the Library to check for my self before ordering the book.
This is what I found in one of the front pages:
"This is a work of fiction. Names, characters, places, and incidents are either the product of the author's imagination or are used fictitiously, and any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, business establishments, events, or locales is entirely coincidental."
Plus I have found the same copy of the book on diferent book stores, some saying "This is a work of fiction" and other don't seem to display it, so My guess is that is a work of fiction.
Just wanted to share it, so if you are looking for a non-fiction book this is not for you.

Find 20 misplaced objects from the future and learn history.......1998-05-20
History is combined with science fiction in a fascinating adventure in which twenty objects from some time in the future are placed in a historic setting, such as a toy robot in ancient Egypt. There are thirteen adventures painted beautifully and written in an exciting way. My students looks forward to being able to "solve" one the the pages as a reward for a good lesson. What a fantastic way to teach history! I can't praise this book enough. So much effort went into producing it. I recommend it for all ages.
