A Good Read!.......2005-07-22
The evidence is undeniable - most mergers fail and most acquisitions never achieve their promised synergies. Yet firms keep bidding top prices to acquire targets. Economists have a name for this phenomenon: the winner's curse. This theory says that the winner in any auction is apt to be the bidder who has most drastically overestimated the purchase's value. The winner, in this case, turns out to be a real loser. Authors Kenneth R. Ferris and Barbara S. Pecherot Petitt present compelling examples of companies that overpaid disastrously for acquisitions. They outline several approaches to valuation that might spare other companies from that sorry fate. We recommend this comprehensive and quite directly applicable book, which is full of cautionary notes and recommendations on how and when to use various valuation models. Why do companies continue to flirt with the winner's curse? The authors conclude, perhaps naively, that companies simply don't know how to correctly value their targets. Whatever the cause, there continue to be many cases where losing, rather than winning, would be a blessing to shareholders.
Broad overview, introductory and basic.......2005-01-26
The book appears to have grown out of course notes and has remained at that level only.
There are better books out there, even if you were to focus only on valuing for M & A needs.
Insightful!.......2004-07-28
I took a course offered by Ken Ferris before the book was published, then read the material. It reminded me of a lot of the insights that I gained from the course. Good book for practitioners.
Met the man, taken his courses..........2004-07-02
This book, and another by Ferris, was a required textbook for a class taught by the author (Ferris) at the school where he teaches. It is an indication of the respect that the other Finance and Accounting profs have for Prof Ferris that his books are used by no other profs there- in fact, many riducle the simple errors and theoretical mistakes that are present in this book. As a guide to valuation of public firms, this book is useful only in outlining a simplisitc cookie-cutter format that lacks any depth or analysis.

Book Description
The fall of the Soviet Union and the subsequent opening of its borders to western oil companies have seen the search for oil turn increasingly to the 'east'. The London Petrophysical Society, chapter of the SPWLA, decided to create this formation evaluation manual specifically to help explorationists and geoscientists who have been brought up on a diet of high-quality, abundant North Sea data, to understand and interpret 'Russian-Style' logs. In addition to the Soviet Union, these logs were run in every country which was under the Soviet sphere of influence.
Consolidates current western experience of gathering and analysing exploration data from the Former Soviet Union
Provides many rules of thumb to get quickly to the right answer Overviews other related disciplines: drilling, testing, coring, regional stratigraphy Includes Rw database Gives an understanding of Soviet philosophy of the oil industry and how this impacts on operating practice and data quality Case studies show how western ideas and technology can be married with Soviet capability to provide an enhanced result

Book Description
When Fuddy Meers opened at the Manhattan Theatre Club in the fall of 1999, it earned the kind of raves that a promising young playwright dreams about. Writing in the New York Observer, John Heilpern called him some kind of comic genius. And after its sold-out run at MTC, the play moved downtown to the Minetta Lane Theatre for an open-ended commercial engagement.
Fuddy Meers revolves around an amnesiac, Claire, who wakes up every morning as a blank slate, on which her family must imprint the facts of her life. On this particular day, the shenanigans begin with Claire being abducted by a limping man who claims to be her brother trying to save her from her evil husband. They drive to the home of her mother, who has had a stroke that left her aphasic (her attempt to say funny mirrors provides the play's title. The ensuing mayhem is both deliriously funny and oddly touching.
Customer Reviews:
Rivals the work of Napoleon Ellsworth!.......2007-07-02
More beautiful, whimsical, touching, absurdist fare from David Lindsay-Abaire--in the vein of another terrific young playwright, Napoleon Ellsworth. It seems as though these two writers (along w/ perhaps Padriac Duffy) are spearheading a revolt against the dead, naturalistic world of theater. And it couldn't've happened a moment too soon! BRAVO!
Looking forward to directing this...........2007-01-19
I hadn't read anything else by this author and I wasn't sure what to make of the descriptions I read but after receiving the play and giving it a read I knew I was going to want to direct or be in this show. It does read a little clunky at times and it feels as though the speaking traits of a couple of the characters may wear thin but that doesn't happen. I'd suggest getting some friends together and having a read through. That's what we did and we had a blast. The story is complex but not very deep. I can't say that this is a show that will answer any questions of the universe for you but I bet you will enjoy the ride.
Clay, noo-noo dish is gooey........2004-12-10
This is a fun play, with several very creative and funny components that keep this from being a standard series of "ah ha's". Definitely a fun night at the theatre and also a fun read. Without giving anything away, this is about a woman whose life is skewed and the necessary occurances that bring it back into perspective for her, and us too. Featuring an imposter-brother, a foul-mouthed pot-smoking kid, an almost-schizophrenic husband, a tongue-tied stroke-victim grandma, and a not-too-bright schizophrenic puppeteer-kidnapper. Yes, all of them and more make Fuddy Meers a good, creative, enjoyable time.
Insane and Imaginative.......2003-05-27
This script keeps you on the edge of your seat--each line is a new discovery. The characters are touching, well-defined, and certainly amusing, and through them Lindsay-Abaire explores humanity with much insight. After reading, I can't help but imagine all the potential this script has to become a great production.
The Playwright of MereTalent Has Been Proclaimed A Genius.......2001-05-27
"Fuddy Meers", there's no denying, is a vastly diverting stage piece, but upon reflection, except for its perception that amnesia may be the American drug of choice, it's pretty void of meaning. Yet at its premiere, its author was unduly proclaimed a playwright of genius for merely demonstrating considerable skill in stagewriting. Happily, Lindsay-Abaire comes into his own, fulfilling his promise in his most recent work, "Kimberly Akimbo," which does to the contemporary American family what perhaps should be done to the contemporary American family. Existing outside of time or history, devoted to adolescent board games, SUV's, Frosted Flakes, and wished-for visits to kiddy theme parks, the family is presented as a collection of unwittingly solitary individuals who maintain for as long as possible the pretense of "caring" for one another. The heroine of this work, a kind of maimed Nora from "A Doll's House," hilariously and movingly finds she too at the end must walk out (though here accompanied by a geeky boyfriend) if only to an uncertain and precarious future. The "comic genius" said to be in evidence in "Fuddy Meers" is in fact clearly and happily realized in this work, which just received its world premiere at South Coast Rep in Southern California.
Book Description
Different versions of the jet have provided the backbone of the frontline strength of the Iranian air force since the 1970s, and whole generations of Iranian pilots and ground personnel have been trained to fly and maintain them. Indeed, the type bore the brunt of active combat operations during the long war with Iraq. Iranian F-4 Phantom IIs were also some of best equipped examples ever exported by the USA. Some Iranian Phantom II pilots gathered immense experience on the type, flying it in combat for more than ten years. This book removes the veil of secrecy surrounding Iranian Phantom II operations since the war with Iraq.
Customer Reviews:
An unknown chapter of modern air wars.......2006-05-02
This book is extremely useful for anyone who wants to shape a picture of the Iranian military capabilities, since the status of a nation's air force is the mirror of its overall military efficiency. The crews of the iranian Phantoms were trained by the Americans during the Shah period and fought extremely well against Iraq despite many disadvantages that were caused by the turmoil in the country due to the Revolution of 1979. The weak point of the book is that most of the first hand accounts come from the same source, namely a flier called "Daryush Z", albeit they cover many personalities and legends of all the Phantom squadrons. The Iranians were very imaginative and capable in planning their air strikes, making the best use of terrain masking and routes, surprising the Iraqis and causing heavy casualties to their war machine. It is a mystery whether the IRIAF retains these skills today, when it faces the most challenging prospect of US or Israeli strikes to its homeland.
Exceptional.......2003-12-21
Don't let the Osprey format deceive you: this short volume fits the 96 pages allotted each installment in the series, but it's absolutely jammed with an exceptional amount and variety of information. Many of us thought that the full story of the Phantom could never be told because the Middle East users were so secretive. But the fact that the authors have developed so many contacts inside Iran is a source of wonder in itself. While Jim Laurier's aircraft profiles are uniformly excellent, modelers will lament the Iranians' absence of unit markings. The main criticism is lack of a theater map, as the geography is never explained. But whether you're a Phantom Pflyer or Phanom Pfan, you'll devour this book.
A highly technical account of the Air war (iran/iraq).......2003-12-09
A great reading. You'll learn tactical issues faced by Iranian pilots whose U.S. training had a huge effect on the air war. The advantages that Iran initially had in the air and eventually lost to Iraq over the years as the war dragged on and the rest of the world opened up to Saddam Hussein. Lots of pictures to supplement the pilot's stories and accounts. Nicely done.

Book Description
Between 1880 and 1914, there was a widespread public debate about the threat of women's work to their bodies, reproductive abilities and the future of the race. Stimulated by a series of sensational stories in the new journalistic press, this debate included politicians, doctors, working men and diverse feminist organisations. In response, the government enacted special legislative measures, known as dangerous trades regulations, to protect women and their unborn children in the white lead and pottery trades. This book explores this debate and places it within the context of the new journalism, medical theories about lead poisoning and women's bodies, the rise of labour, and the expansion of feminist activism. Most significantly, it demonstrates how ideas about sexual difference decisively shaped the construction of these important measures. This led to a gendered definition of dangerous work, one that negated evidence about unsafe working conditions that posed a threat to both working women and men. It also led to the introduction of practices that resemble what we today call 'foetal protection'. Dr CAROLYN MALONE is associate professor of history at Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana.
Book Description
Scientific Inquiry: Readings in the Philosophy of Science features an impressive collection of classical and contemporary readings on a wide range of issues in the philosophy of science. The volume is organized into six sections, each with its own introduction, and includes a general introduction that situates the philosophy of science in relation to other areas of intellectual inquiry. The selections focus on the main issues in the field, including the structure of scientific theories, models of scientific explanation, reductionism, historicist challenges to the objectivity of science, and the dispute over the ontological interpretation of mature scientific theories. Both the positivist model of science and its competitors, including contemporary social constructivist models, are included. Ideal for introductory philosophy of science courses, Scientific Inquiry strives to provide students and other readers with a thorough knowledge of the philosophical complexity of modern science and an appreciation of its authoritative intellectual standing in contemporary life.
