I wish there would be a follow up to this title in particular to play catch up. I actually got my hands on this 6 years ago at a near by TARGET store next to DU. This book is a brilliant piece of an eye opener for anyone leaving the academic world and starting a new life. It gives very simple factoids and ideas about what can b done in home economics and personal finance etc. if any1 know of a follow up to this title or something similar please let me know.

Very simplified introduction to financial basics for beginners, but needs updating---no mention of Roth IRAs, new tax laws, etc. Might be a good book for teenagers to start with!

This book is a comprehensive introduction to a group of case studies that focuses on the constant influx of heritage management issues. The book seeks to present and provide commentary on contributions both positive and negative, and on how to solve them. Commodification and consumption of international past is a key issue to this text, and it should be a staple reader to anyone interested in national parks, marketing, heritage management, hospitality, and historical reconstruction. This book approaches heritage in sundry ways. Most notably, this book provides an interesting introduction to various modern problems heritage confronts.

Personal ads, for the most part, are boring and surprisingly impersonal. You know the type: "SWM into foreign films and Chinese takeout seeks SWF for romantic walks on the beach." Any ad with a modicum of originality stands out. Advertising copywriters Emily Thornton Calvo and Laurence Minsky approach personal-ad writing the way they'd approach writing a product advertisement. Not only do they encourage you to be more clever and creative, but they help you figure out exactly what kind of person and relationship you're seeking, and then they show you how to express that information in an ad. 25 Words or Less is too long for what it accomplishes (the way I figure it, you have to read about 3,000 words for every one that you'll write), but it will certainly help less-inspired writers pen catchier, more effective, more personal ads. --Jane Steinberg

Who me? I'll never be desperate enough to pay for a personal ad! If you've ever made that statement, you haven't read what these two professional copywriters have to say about it. This book is loaded with ideas that work. Even if you never place a personal ad, you'll find this book enlightening and entertaining. I especially liked the Foreword, he said, with his tongue in cheek!

Finding a soulmate in a newspaper ad or out in cyberspace is dicey enough, but without a guide it's like trying to find a golf ball in a snowstorm.

After reading 25 words or less I feel all warm, fuzzy, and safe...no more barking up the wrong tree or running down blind alleys... this book helps you clarify your objectives and takes all the guesswork out of writing, and placing your ad, as well as helping you along once you decide to meet that special someone.

The thing that impressed me most was the personal "personals" experiences, they were honest, and fascinating. Having true-life excerpts made it very easy for the reader to feel comfortable. I felt like I was getting advice from a friend, unlike other how-to dating books that lecture or talk down to the reader making you wonder if the authors ever dated at all. Wonderful work! Kudos to Emily Calvo and Laurence Minsky!

Everyway you can meet someone I've tried and this covers just about all of them and all the good ones. Lot's of realy good examples of the real deal. It's like having a bunch of friends telling you how to do it.

This book has way more information than you'd think possible about how to write (or answer) a personal ad. If you've tried meeting people through newspaper ads before, and failed miserably, this book will show you why--and what to do next time in order to succeed.

And it's also a quick read, because it's packed with real-life examples of actual ads, success stories, and not-so-successful stories.

He says all the right things, but does he look good on paper?? That's the question I asked myself after reading "Mr. Write." How could I (how could anyone) resist the temptation to find out using the well-written, clear and insightful analyses provided by Ms. East. Intelligent, witty and sometimes disturbing, Ms. East shows us how cryptology reveals a person's personality through the simple act of writing a note and how anyone can can apply those theories. In addition, she provides easy to understand examples. So, if you're wondering if he's as good as he seems, or too good to be true. Is he kind, open, generous and straightforward or critical, controlling and deceitful? Find out for yourself. By the way, I did. Fortunately, I learned enough to to confirm what I already knew, which was, that while the gentleman in question may not be Mr. Right, he's perfectly suited for Mr. Right Now!! So I'm keeping pen and paper handy while my search continues.

Thoroughly enjoyed "Finding Mr. Wright" - Ms East's no nonsense approach to graphology made her book very easy to use and understand - sprinkled with good sound advice and excellent examples. THIS MUST READ BOOK - I have strongly recommended o both my male and female friends.

This book is quite unlike your typically self-help books. It provides the reader with a 'slant'on the intricacies of finding a mate. The best thing about the book is that the reader can use it to improve their own personal characteristics AND see if that significant other is really the one for you.

Although the art of graphology is quite new to me, I found the book quite interesting. Also this is an easy read for those of us with little to no time for leisure reading. You can choose the 'hour' of your choice for traits you find the most important in a relationship.

As far as validity of the science of graphology, I'm totally not bought on it yet. After I recieve my in-depth analysis from Ms. East then I'll make judgement. Until then, I think Ms. East succeeded in creating an interesting, thought provoking tool to use for understanding that special someone.

Wow, what a wonderful experience to read such a different type of book. Beverley is a wonderful and skilled writer who broke it down for me, a lay person, to understand. Even though I am married and have already found Mr. Write it was nice to have this book confirm some things about my husband and I. I really enjoyed reading it straight through, and will refer back to it many times. Can't wait to read more by Ms. East.

The period of the American Civil War was not one in which belles lettres flourished but it did produce a remarkable literature which mostly consists of speeches and pamphlets, private letters and diaries, personal memoirs and journalistic reports. Has there ever been another historical crisis of the magnitude of 1861-65 in which so many people were so articulate?

When Edmund Wilson wrote those words in the fall of 1961, the literature of the Vietnam War had yet to be written, but his point remains well taken. Patriotic Gore is a remarkable survey of Civil War literature, encompassing generals, society ladies, and novelists alike. The readings of these works are suffused throughout by Wilson's literary attentiveness and--occasionally--flashes of humor. Of Abraham Lincoln, for example, he writes, "There has undoubtedly been written about him more romantic and sentimental rubbish than about any other American figure, with the possible exception of Edgar Allan Poe; and there are moments when one is tempted to feel that the cruelest thing that has happened to Lincoln since he was shot by Booth has been to fall into the hands of Carl Sandburg."

Certainly one finds the books and personages that one would expect to find within these pages--Harriet Beecher Stowe, Ulysses S. Grant, Robert E. Lee, Mary Chestnut--but there are plenty of revelations for those who are not already intimately familiar with the period, such as the possible debt the realism of The Red Badge of Courage owes to the novelist John De Forest, or the charming erudition of Confederate general Richard Taylor. The editorial board of the Modern Library determined Patriotic Gore to be one of the 100 best nonfiction works of the 20th century. Whatever one thinks of the list as a whole, nobody who reads this book can begrudge the board that decision. --Ron Hogan

Magnificent, mandatory reading.......2000-12-25

Edmund Wilson produced this classic look at civil war literature more than forty years ago and it remains essential reading for anyone professing an interest in the great American conflict. Wilson brought much to the table: a beautiful, restrained writing style and a prodigious understanding of the civil war and its primary players. His magnificent analysis of Ulysses S. Grant's memoirs remains the best and most often-quoted ode to these books. Wilson's tribute to Grant's memoirs is the crux of the book, but his ancillary analysis of other civil war works is also riveting and instructive.

"Patriotic Gore" is not only great literature, it's truly one of the best books I've ever read. It deserves a place on any serious civil war historian's bookshelf.

If only there were more books like this one........2000-09-30

I am knowledgeable about the Civil War and its literature. In fact, you would think I'd be heartily sick of the subject by now. I sometimes feel that I have over-grazed this favorite topic. However, Wilson is simply wonderful in this book. He makes the whole antebellum era and the war years live again. His opinions are orignal and well stated. He has picked both famous and obscure books/authors to discuss at greater or lesser length depending on what he has new to say about them and on whether or no the subject in hand has, through disuse, disappeared from the knowledge of man. If you are interested in this period but are tired of the same old things, Wilson can point you down paths you could never find by yourself.

I found the introduction a little too ideological to my taste but otherwise the book is darned near perfect.

I'm surprised no one more learned than I in the literature of the American Civil War has yet reviewed this book. I came to it in an attmept to get a sense of the literary quality of the various memoirs and writings left by prominent participants in that momentous struggle, after being surprised that U.S. Grant's memoirs are held in high regard by critics. Wilson's book is a very compelling read (so far - I haven't yet finished it), giving the reader a vivid impression of the ideologies of the time and the pervasive and somewhat high-strung religiosity that influenced their development. Wilson's style is a pleasure, the product of a highly attentive intelligence informed by deep, but lightly-worn, learning. It's surprising how recently this book was written, since Wilson's voice resonates to these ears (educated in the jargon and vulgarities of the late-20th-century university) with the timbre of another, more civilized age.

Over the past few decades there has been an increased interest in the archaeology of islands. Archaeological approaches to studying islands and island societies have often mirrored those of biologists because islands are relatively isolated, contain unique species or remnant populations, have an impoverished terrestrial ecology, provide opportunities to investigate the effects of animals (e.g., humans) on ecosystems, lend themselves to manipulative experiments, and have implications for helping us understand environmental and social changes on a global level from a "microcosmic" view. The field of island archaeology contributes to understanding the fluid boundaries (both physical and mental) that existed for islanders prehistorically and how they adapted to their island world. This book explores a wide range of issues including the impacts humans have had on island ecosystems, the intentional movement of goods, resources, and animals across vast distances, and ways in which archaeologists analyze islands and island societies methodologically and theoretically.
