The symposium brought together more than a hundred attendees from many countries including a significant participation from Japan and other East-Asia countries. Many of the trends observed in the 1st Symposium held in 1996 were confirmed: displays are indeed the main application in LAE (photovoltaics were not included in the topics of this symposium) and active matrix display (AMLCD) is still the leading technology. Future AMLCDs integrating the display drivers onto the same substrate require much faster thin-film transistors (TFTs) than those used for LCD addressing, therefore putting a strong demand on polysilicon performances. As a consequence the quest for an improved low temperature, large area (and low cost) polysilicon process is intensive and the competitors, including direct plasma deposition and excimer laser crystallization of amorphous layers, are reporting significant steps forward. With the tremendous demand for efficient colour flat panel displays, other display technologies are gaining interest. Field emission display (FED) is one of them. FEDs based on amorphous tetrahedral carbon thin-films are stimulating intensive studies on the optoelectronic properties of this complex material.

Large area pixellized sensors for x-ray radiography and document scanning is another field of application in LAE which has recently reached initial production. Using a TFT or diode pixel addressing similar to AMLCD, this kind of device benefits from most of the AMLCD technology. However these devices present an increased complexity and stringent specifications on noise which in turn means materials with improved electronic transport properties. Finally, LAE is a fast developing area in thin-film research and technology. Initially an all-silicon domain, it now involves a large range of thin-film semiconductors and dielectrics, whose properties need to be fully understood and for which flexible and efficient processes have still to be developed.

Loving This Book in East TN.......2005-09-19

I had a great time with this book! Being from East TN, it felt like coming home! The "quirky" characters were relatable to many of the natives I've known during my lifetime of growing up here. There were several times I laughed out loud during this book! Being a former student and huge fan, this is not the first book I've read of Mr. Whorton's. In both of his books, I've found his attention to detail and thorough description to be dead-on (especially in Approximately Heaven). I look forward to the next one!

I am not sighing about this book.......2005-09-02

Well, I felt a need to respond to the reviewer who was so disheartened by reading FRANKLAND that he needed to sigh in the title of his review. This book is completely charming! I am not comparing Mr. Whorton to Shakespeare, but the complaints the aforementioned reviewer levels against FRANKLAND make me wonder: Has the same reviewer posted a sighing review of Richard III because of its "inaccuracies"? The reviewer seems especially concerned about Tolley sleeping on the side of the interstate. I am not suggesting that the reviewer knows from painful personal experience how hard it is to sleep on the interstate, but I am struck by the intensely personal nature of his overwhelming despair at the detail. FRANKLAND's narrator is a beautifully realized, shy character whose internal monologues are rich and revealing even when he is trying to hide his tenderness from us. The villains in the book are equally lovingly crafted and human, the reprobates of Falstaffian dimensions. Yes, come to think of it, I AM comparing Mr. Whorton to Shakespeare. And I am comparing the whining... I mean sighing... reviewer (who is, I imagine, a tour guide at a dilapidated museum of Tennessee folkways, bitter about its lack of funding which caused him to cancel publication of his Tennessee dialect newsletter) to someone who whines and sighs about Shakespeare and eagerly hops from web site to web site, sighing obsessively about meaningless "inaccuracies."

East Tennesseans are used to being stereotyped, but this time even the stereotype isn't done well. The setting receives no descriptive treatment, the characters are thinly developed, there is no attempt to capture the vernacular, and the narrative is not believable. Would the Virginia state police let this man sleep on the shoulder of the interstate? Why would he rent a log cabin from someone waving a weed-eater at him, when he hasn't even arrived at his destination? This weak yarn may amuse those who hold fast to their Beverly Hillbillies view of the southern highlands, but it will annoy anyone who actually knows the place.

Hilarious romp.......2005-03-17

This really is a funny book. The comparisons to Confederacy of Dunces are no lie; the main character, John Tolley, an amateur Andrew Johnson scholar, has the same mix of cluelessness and erudition as Ignatius Reilly, and one of the book's great pleasures is that Tolley also serves as narrator. His voice alone is enough to carry the book. But there's a strong cast of characters along for the ride, all of them both odd and real. There's also a really engaging plot with scraps of mystery and conspiracy of the East Tennessee variety. The dialogue is sharp, the writing first-rate. Buy it; you won't regret it.

Get off your ass and read this book.......2005-02-08

There are bits of Barry Gifford, Richard Brautigan and Donald Barthelme in this novel--mostly Whorton, but these guys too. A good read, written by a smart guy.

Great quality but slow shipping on .......2007-02-19

I would recommend this book to almost anyone who wants a good read. The stories are short enough that you can read in one sitting but understanding them can take a while. Unfortunatley, I ordered it as a textbook but it came too late for the class so I had to go out and get a more expensive version. The actual product that came was still in great condition meriting 5 stars but I didn't need it, so I had to return it.

Pacific war stories.......2007-07-30

I found this to be a well written and extremely interesting collection of "real war stories". It was gratifying to read the combat, as well as the "backwater" stories of the people who carried the fight to the enemy in the Pacific theater. Full of simple stories, as well as full of harrowing bloody accounts, the book brings to life a sense of how the complete war was fought from the individuals viewpoint. Highly recommended, an easy read.

THE FACT THAT THE 13TH AIR FORCE WAS WAS NOT MENTIONED IN THIS BOOK INDICATES THAT OLIVER NORTHS REFERENCES WERE FLAWED. I SERVED IN THE 13TH AIR FORCE AND FLEW B24'S ON MISSIONS TO RABAUL,BALIKAPAN, MINDINAO, LUZON, AND SEVERAL AGAINST THE JAPANESE FLEET. OUR LOSSES ON OUR BALIKAPAN RAIDS WERE AS MUCH AS 50 PERCENT OF OUR AIR CRAFT AND CREWS. WE OPERATED FROM LEA NEW GUINEA AND ANOTHER ISLAND NOT MENTIONED " MOROTAI". OUR 307TH BOMB GROUP WILL HAVE THEIR EVERY TWO YEAR REUNION IN SEATTLE AUGUST 23, TO 26, 2006.

Excellent Overview.......2005-02-07

I thought this book created a comprehensive overview of the war in the Pacific. So much attention has been given to the war in Europe, it was nice to get a better understanding of what so many overlooked veterans experienced. The author did an excellent job of gathering information and stories to help the reader see the war from many perspectives.

70 Wonderful Stories.......2004-12-02

World War II is now sixty years old. The commanders, older than the troops have passed on. The stories that are left to be told have to come second hand, or from the troops themselves, the young men that carried the rifles, drove the tanks, or more likely did the thousand and one other tasks that make a modern military work. Regardless of their assigned task, an awful lot of these people came under attack somewhere, they were captured and in prison camps for years, and these at least came back to tell their tale. Often they had held inside what they had seen and done.

Here are the recorded stories of 70 veterans of the pacific war. This is not the big story of how the Marines went in at Tarawa, learned about how to invade, polished it up, and went on to win the war. Instead this is the story of the marine that goes ashore on Guadalcanal a month after the first invasion, he eventually goes up to the combat line. He never sees a Japanese solder. This is the flyer who is sent to the hospital with malaria and misses the battle. These are the people who won the war. I am reminded of the line from John Milton: "They Also Serve Who Only Stand And Wait."

These are fascinating stories from people we'll never meet.

This volume in the series Documentary History of the Jews in Italy illustrates the history of the Jews in Sicily from 1478 to 1489. It is the sequel to the first six volumes and covers the events during the first years of the rule of King Ferdinand II. These include the prelude to the expulsion, which witnessed a further deterioration in the position of the Jews on the island. At the same time, the Jewish community on the island reached the points of its greatest expansion in population as well as economic prosperity. Some 900 documents--many of them published here for the first time--record the fortunes of the Jews and their relationship with the authorities and their Christian neighbours. Much new information has come to light, and many facets of Jewish life in Sicily have been uncovered.

The abundance of historical records in the archives of the Crown and of local authorities again compares favourably with the relative scarcity of surviving documentation in earlier centuries. This book can only be appreciated by a scholar of both history and mathematics.If you want the real story of the basis of modern geometry and where it had evolved from,then this book will amaze and educate.Three cultures are responsible for producing mathematical greatness;the Greeks,the Babylonians and the Egyptians.The book is recommended for high school students for enriching geometry skills,yet can be read by eager seventh and eighth graders as well.There are three chapters dedeicated to 'Euclid',the greatest of the Greek geometricians.Yet,only two chapters on 'Pythagoras',the more famous of the two philosophical mathematicians.Each chapter has exercises and answer keys for checking.For the price,it's well worth reading to broaden your geometry knowledge and eliminate your hidden numerophobia.

I have used this book in the past when I taught a math history course to high school students. In its paperbook form now it is a good resource book for teachers who are looking for projects or extra math history work for their students to do and study.
