The Complete Equipment-Leasing Handbook
ASIN: 0764553704 |
Book Description
Business Leasing For Dummies covers the fundamentals of the leasing process, and objectively addresses the To buy or to lease?" question. This friendly guide describes -- in plain English -- the financial and legal ramifications of entering into a leasing agreement. It also explains how to evaluate leases for "unique" assets, such as: aircraft, software, railroad equipment, etc.And it provides negotiating tips and hints for those playing both sides of the game: the lessors and the lessees. The book highlights the financial advantages of leasing equipment, and relates those benefits to company costs and cashflow."
Customer Reviews:
Business Leasing for Dummies.......2003-06-20
This book is more about the benefits and features of leasing. It does not give the reader any information on structuring a lease. The only benefit that I saw in reading this book was that it did inform me about different lease types.
Excellent if niche book.......2002-07-09
For anyone in the leasing business, this is a wonderful book to own. It is a complete training course in equipment leasing. The author has the only good explanation I could ever find of concepts such as leveraged leases. This book is a _must_ for anyone in the equipment leasing industry.
I wish that the author had worked out a few examples with the reader on cash flows and pricing of leases. There is some math that is not very clear to the first time reader. I also wish that there was some more information about vendor leasing and lease origination.
Regardless, this is one heck of a training course in leasing for under 20 dollars. If you are in any way involved with leasing, this is money well spent.

Book Description:
Everyone's favorite Caldecott Honor-winning porcine diva is back and with fanfare! There are going to be fireworks tonight, and Olivia can hardly wait to hear the band. But when she finds out that there isn't going to be a band, she can't understand why not. How can there be fireworks without a band?! And so Olivia sets to putting a band together herself... all by herself. Using pots, pans, her brother's toys, and even her father's suspenders, Olivia forms a band spectacular enough to startle any audience. Lavishly brought to life in Ian Falconer's signature style, and introducing an eye-catching shade of blue, here is Olivia doing what Olivia does best--making noise
Exclusive Art from Ian Falconer's Olivia Forms a Band
|
Why wasn't this picture included in the book? Here's a look inside the creation of a blockbuster picture book.
There were 60 images selected for Olivia Forms a Band out of over 70 pieces of art submitted by Olivia creator Ian Falconer. Sixty images may sound like a lot, but many pages are filled with multiple depictions of our porcine heroine. For instance, when you look at the page where Olivia is removing Daddy's suspenders, this page has nine separate drawings. On the other hand, the glorious fireworks scenes are all composed of one piece of art per page.
For this particular image of Olivia provided exclusively for Amazon.com customers, Falconer didn't feel like this artwork captured Olivia's true character. However, many people in-house at Simon & Schuster loved the picture and thought it was typical of a 5-year-old playing with her mother's lipstick. While there's a lot to love in this picture, Ian Falconer after all is the man behind Olivia. He knows better than anyone what makes something up to "Olivia standards." Sometimes that is as simple as being able to know which image works best for a particular moment in the book. In this instance Falconer felt the drawings that were used in the final book served the scene better, and with that this one was left on the cutting room floor. |

Book Description
Traditionally, randomness and determinism have been viewed as being diametrically opposed, based on the idea that causality and determinism is complicated by noise. Although recent research has suggested that noise can have a productive role, it still views noise as a separate entity. This work suggests that this not need to be so. In an informal presentation, instead, the problem is traced to traditional assumptions regarding dynamical equations and their need for unique solutions. If this requirement is relaxed, the equations admit for instability and stochasticity evolving from the dynamics itself. This allows for a decoupling from the burden of the past and provides insights into concepts such as predictability, irreversibility, adaptability, creativity and multi-choice behaviour. This reformulation is especially relevant for biological and social sciences whose need for flexibility a propos of environmental demands is important to understand: this suggests that many system models are based on randomness and nondeterminism complicated with a little bit of determinism to ultimately achieve concurrent flexibility and stability. As a result, the statistical perception of reality is seen as being a more productive tool than classical determinism. The book addresses scientists of all disciplines, with special emphasis at making the ideas more accessible to scientists and students not traditionally involved in the formal mathematics of the physical sciences. The implications may be of interest also to specialists in the philosophy of science.
· Presents the ideas in an informal language.
· Provides tools for exploring data for singularities.

The Bluffer's Guide to the Quantum Universe: Bluff Your Way in the Quantum Universe

Book Description
All readers need to know on the subject of computers to protect themselves from crashing and burning in social settings.
Book Description
Originally published as Embrace an Angry Wind
Following the fall of Atlanta, rebel commander John Bell Hood rallied his demoralized troops and marched them off the Tennessee, desperately hoping to draw Sherman after him and forestall the Confederacy's defeat. But Sherman refused to be lured and began his infamous "March to the Sea," while Hood charged headlong into catastrophe.
In this compelling dramatic account of a final and fatal invasion by the Confederate Army of Tennessee, Wile Sword illuminates the missed opportunities, senseless bloody assaults, poor command decisions, and stubborn pride that resulted in 23,500 Confederate losses--including 7,00 casualties in one battle-- and the pulverization of the South's second largest army.
Sword follows Hood and his army as they let an early advantage and possible victory slip away at Spring Hill, then engage in a reckless and ill-fated frontal attack on Franklin, often called the "Gettysburg of the West." Despite that disaster, Hood refuses to yield and presses on the Nashville and a two-day bloodbath that unhinges what is left of his battered troops--the worst defeat suffered by any army during the war.
Telling the story from both the Confederate and the Union perspectives, Sword pursues personalities as well as battles and troop strategy. He portrays Hood as a gutsy yet irresponsible leader--"a fool with a license to kill his own men"--whose valiant but rapidly dwindling troops were no match for the methodical General George G. Thomas and his better prepared--and entrenched--Union army. Hood, however, was not entirely to blame for Confederate failures, says Sword, who shows how decision making and actions--both good and bad, logical and chaotic--by key players on both sides helped determine the battles' outcomes.
This book is part of the Modern War Studies series.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding read..........2007-08-04
I am a young civil war enthusist and have never really studied the end of the Confederate Army of the Tennessee. This book opens the door into one of the saddest few months of any army during the Civil War. Very in depth and throughly reserched. Spends ample time on the decisive Battle of Franklin and incorprates not only the eyewitness accounts from officers, but the privates in the thick of the fight. Recommened for any Civil War enthusist.
Fascinating and readable account of disaster in the .......2007-05-27
Some people who have read this book with a jaundiced eye have criticized Sword for his accurate protrayal of John Bell Hood. Davis like the present president had favorites to whom he remained faithful despite their obvious shortcommings. As Sword points out Hood was a great general as a field commander but even before his physical injuries he was not suited to command an independent army. As radical Confederate Louis Wigfall commented, "Davis has attempted to do what God couldn't; male John Hood a general." If someone wants to understand the imprortance of the West and the disaster made by Hood, this book is required reading. It is not recommended for hero worshipers.
The Army of Tennessee Destroyed in Three Weeks!.......2007-05-01
Outstanding account of battles during Hoods "invasion" of Tennessee in late 1864. The narrative is first rate. The descriptions of the principal characters both blue and gray were extremly interesting and given due credit.
The descriptions of the tremendous blood-letting of Hood's decision to ram the Army of Tennessee up against prepared breastworks at Franklin are chilling. The destruction of a proud army was guaranteed even without their eventual defeat by Gen. George Thomas at Nashville two weeks later. The author describes thoroughly the pre-lude to Franklin as Hood lets a vast chunk of the Union Army slip through his grasp at Spring Hill. This lost opportunity sets the stage for the Army of Tennessee's destruction days later at Franklin with fruitless head on attacks. A fast and detailed read.
Living in Tennessee, I was able to walk some of the ground described in the book and picture what it might have been. The author has done a very good job of providing geographical details and descriptions. The Last Hurrah of a Lost Cause
lost opportunity.......2007-03-08
Whoever considers Davis, Bragg, and Hood inept and ego-driven will be supported by this book. Hood's step by step movements leading to Franklin, (and their consequences) are well researched. The challenges facing the Union defenders of Nashville are presented better than I have ever seen elsewhere.
Refocus On The South's Heroes........2006-05-28
After the Civil War fiasco, Jefferson Davis encouraged the South to "bury its dead, its hopes and its aspirations," but the South will never surrender. He declared that the past is dead. His first wife was Sarah Knox Taylor, daughter of U. S. President Zachary Taylor. Davis was a congressman, senator, secretary of war, and President of the Confederacy. His horse's name was Thunder.
In 1858, Horace Greely called Jefferson Davis "unquestionably the foremost man in the South today" and a great president. He was educated at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky. "His occasional unintentional arrogance came
from his sense of great commanding power.
One of his generals during the war, declared the best by Robert E. Lee, was besmirked in 2005 by two college professors thusly:
This book was written in association with Texas Christian University for the American Crisis Series, Books on Civil War Era. Previously, I reviewed ON THE BRINK OF CIVIL WAR by John C. Waugh. This one, however, is what the title says all 'myth' written by two journalism professors at the University of
Tennessee. I guess they were assigned this personage, the greatest Civil War General, according to Robert E. Lee, because they work in Tennessee. Neither are from the state of Tennessee and know nothing, no facts about this great soldier of the Civil War.
They know nothing about history per se, so I am just wondering why the history department at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville would not have been a better selection to write about one of our native heroes. These frauds call their subject 'white trash' because the klan wore white sheets in his reincarnation of the group(now they wear purple, green and white outfits) used to protect everybody from the carpet baggers after the Civil War. These men are not from Tennessee, and should never have been chosen to write this book.
It is biased and slanted and exactly a 'myth' a fairy tale of the worse sort. Forrest was from a good background and family (father was a locksmith/doctor)and born in Chapel Hill, Tennessee, in Bedford County. These men thought he was born in Memphis as they dwell on something which happened which was
infamous instead of famous. Those of us at the public meeting where they talked had not heard of that specific incident, and we are native Tennesseans. His life was not a 'morality tale,' as they claim, nor was he a comic book figure. He was a real live hero, not something made up in the comics. They even equate
him with Forrest Gump, how dumb can a person be? They are blasphamous in their assertions that he was less than they.
Anyone can get a PhD and still not be competent. I have three PhDs in my family, and they have no common sense. Neither do these writers. Don't believe anything you read in this book. It is all made up, that's what journalism is these days, manufactured lies. These teachers are in the journalism department at U-T, not the history area, so they never should have taken on this endeavor.
They make N. B. Forrest out to be a dumb, silly "white trash" from Tennessee when they know better. It is just to sully his reputation as a great general.
They don't know how to present facts or truth. They did not research this book adequately, so just read it as fiction.
Jefferson Davis was born into a patriotic American family at Fairview, Kentucky. He would have drawn his sword if he could have been around to read thisgarbage about one of his best generals and a great American in his own
right.

The final glory of the Army of Tennessee.......2005-08-04
In short, this is possibly the finest book regarding Hood's Nashville campaign. While some reviewers have taken issue with Sword's opinion of Hood's leadership, it should be noted that Robert E. Lee and William Tecumseh Sherman shared Sword's opinion of Hood's leadership qualities.
Read this book to learn more about Patrick Cleburne, a man of greater ability, integrity and possibly devotion to the Southern cause than the man who sent him to his death.
Read this book to learn about the greatest charge of the Confederacy. The charge(s) at Franklin were greater in size, scope and ferocity than the fabled charge of Pickett at Gettysburg. And in some ways, filled with a more poignant courage. At Gettysburg, there was a still a chance perhaps for victory....at Franklin, there was only the chance of regaining a measure of pride for men who gave all they had for the noblest ideas of Southern Independence.
More Like a Docu-drama than Non-fiction .......2002-11-08
Buy this book and you will have something in common with Confederate General John Bell Hood. You will both be victims of author Wiley Sword. The defenseless Hood is villianized by Sword's vicious, albeit eloquently written spin. Hood's critics are given top billing in Sword's pages, while Hood's many defenders are silenced. Statistics are twisted to make Hood's performance appear remarkably poor. Sword's fact-filtering, and cut-and-paste journalism will unfortunately impress the unwitting reader, who will be sixty bucks poorer, and totally misinformed on the 1864 Confederate campaign to liberate Nashville. John Bell Hood has been described as the Civil War's most "famously unfortunate" commander. Much more accurate and complete information on the campaign can be found within the pages of Shrouds of Glory, by Winston Groom, who doesn't try to create a villian where none existed.
Tennessee-A Grave or a Free Home.......2001-10-14
Without a doubt the best contemporary, secondary source on the Middle Tennessee Campaign. Wiley Sword writes a splendid military history that reads like a novel. The book is written with excellent prose and an obvious love for the topic. Also of great use to the historian is that the book is well documented with the best use of primary material that one will find in a book of this genre. The use of manuscript material further embellishes this fine book. I highly recommend this book to all those interested in Civil War history!
One of the best on the cival war in the west........1998-03-08
The book covers Franklin and Nashville better than any other book of the war. It shows the weakness of the Southern cause by this stage of the war and the weakness of General Hood. The book also show the courage of the Southern soilder and the men who led them.
Book Description
Wonderfully told story of the campaign that ruined John Bell Hood's Army of Tennessee.
Customer Reviews:
Tragedy and the Army of the Tennessee.......2003-06-19
The Civil War is rapidly drawing to a close. The Southern Confederacy is literally being ripped apart by the Union armies. In desperation Jefferson Davis turns command of the Army of the Tennessee to a crippled general with no experience at high level command. The outcome was almost foreordained. Mr. Sword's book recounts the tragic destruction of an army that had been scourged by the effects of bad leadership for far too long. The appointment of John Bell Hood proved to be, argueably, the single worst decision that the Confederate president ever made.
In spite of ample evidence of the futility of frontal assualts Hood sent his army into poorly coordinated, and futile, attacks that sapped both the heart and soul of his army as well as it's strength. The casualties incurred during Hood's 7 month tenure as its commander destroyed it's combat effectiveness and it's self-confidence and hope.
Mr. Sword's book meticulously documents the events that led to the fateful battles that destroyed the Army of the Tennessee with both passion and attention to detail. The suffering and privation of the men; the strategic and tactical decisions; the events that affected the overall war effort are all faithfully portrayed.
Unlike many works of military history this one is hard to put down. It reads like a novel but is backed by extensive research and documentation. One is left with a profound feeling of sadness from the descriptions of the torn and wounded survivors of both the Blue and Grey and also a sense of deep pride at the accomplishments and gallantry of so many of our forefathers.
Civil War buffs will find few books of this caliber and will be moved by the pathos in it's presentation. As a tribute to heroism and endurance this book is withour peer. The Army of the Tennessee was often defeated but never conquered and Mr. Sword's account does them the honor their sacrifices deserved.
Cut and Paste History.......2002-11-03

Book Description
Adventure-filled journals of FDR's seafaring relative.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful but abridged..........2005-02-28
The only reason I gave this review four stars instead of five is that this volume is abridged. It is missing a great deal of material about actual shiphandling and navigation in the period, including detailed descriptions of harbors. It is worth seeking out a used volume of the original.
A new and wondrous world seen by an ever-curious mariner.......1998-10-22
Fans of Patrick O'Brian will love Amasa Delano's Voyages. Delano's travels took him through the same uncharted waters and touched the same exotic lands as O'Brian's intrepid Captain Jack Aubrey and his ever-curious companion Stephen Maturin, but with a difference: O'Brian's heroes live in fiction; Delano was for real.
Seldom have I read a seafarer's account with so many varied and interesting observations about the world through which he traveled. Joseph Banks, Charles Darwin and other professional naturalists wrote a good deal about the flora and fauna they studied, of course, but Delano's curiosity takes him everywhere and informs the reader about an amazing range of contemporary details of life and human behavior.
This is a captivating account of daring sea adventures........1998-08-23
Berkshire House Publishers and Eleanor Seagraves have performed a service of great value in resurrecting this account of sea voyages that played a critical role in establishing America's place in the field of maritime commerce and exploration. Truth can be stranger than fiction. Delano's extradordinary exploits are every bit as fascinating as the tales told by Patrick O'Brian and will appeal to the same readership. Handsomely illustrated.
