Mediocre - Kind of a Waste of Time.......2004-04-30

Haley Yates was devastated when a freak accident destroyed her chances of becoming a police officer like the rest of her family. Forced to resign from the police academy, Haley became an office worker at the Fort Lauderdale precinct and aims to become the next office manager. She knows that no one takes beautiful women seriously, so she dresses very professionally, in boxy, business-like suits, scrapes her hair back in a French twist and hides behind her coke-bottle glasses. But she is determined to turn over a new leaf on Halloween and wears her new contact lenses to the staff party, where she is dressed as a very sexy catwoman. Haley is hoping to catch the eye of Cole Fischer, a policeman who caught her eye when he transferred to the Fort Lauderdale force two years before. Unfortunately, Cole doesn't even know that Haley exists...

Until he sees her in her body hugging leotard and half mask at the party! Cole is instantly drawn to the playfully sensuous catwoman and spends the evening by her side. However, he never gets her name and leaves the party without knowing who she is. Confident that he can track her down, Cole is surprised when his beautiful Catwoman shows up to save him from a thief who is determined to get away - even if he has to kill a policeman to do it. More attracted to his Catwoman than ever, Cole starts checking out every female in the department, but he never gives Haley a second glance. I thought that this book was pretty mediocre and felt that I was wasting my time reading it. I was looking for a light-hearted romance to pass the time and instead I ended up with this ridiculous piece of fluff. Granted, I knew that the whole premise was complete fantasy from the moment I picked it up, but I was kind of hoping for a more female superhero angle than a policeman suddenly turning into a victim who constantly needs rescuing. Haley's self doubts were pretty lame and she never did overcome them while Cole was stupid enough not to notice all of the clues that Haley left him to tell her true identity - what kind of policeman are we talking about here, anyway? The whole story just got pushed over the top when Cole's father, a top-notch toilet salesman, showed up in town towards the end. The author got some cheap laughs from making potty jokes, but it wasn't enough to turn this book into a campy, fun story or a romantic comedy for me. Also, the romantic quality was definitely lacking for me here - the main characters kissed and flirted a bit, but there was really no attraction between them. Poor characterization, a wandering, forgettable plot and a lackluster romance had me rating this book lower than 2 stars, but at least the author can write without grammatical errors and spelling mistakes, so I gave her points for that (and I liked Linnea Sinclair's cover!).

Flying thru New Guinea.......2004-05-01

Mr. Henebry does a very good job describing his personal experience in WWII both in flying attack aircraft and leading the 3rd Attack Group. This book isn't quit as good as Wrecking Havoc, but does describe Mr. Henebry's personnal experience. On a positive note, Mr. Henebry provides a very good description of several raids on Rabaul and and insight into Pappy Gunn and others from the Southwest Pacific. This is a personal history vs. a unit history.

Many important questions in history and philosophy implicate some conception of time. Likewise, the study of historical events requires some background knowledge of calendars, seasons and holidays. Perhaps for this reason I find myself picking up G. J. Whitrow's TIME IN HISTORY every couple of years and rereading all or part of it. It serves as an admirable refresher to issues that keep popping up.

Whitrow starts with a general discussion of time. Children develop a sense of time gradually. Many primitive cultures have not developed a vocabulary that allows them to distinguish periods of time with any precision.

Whitrow next surveys conceptions of time in various cultures and historical epochs. The creation accounts in different religions all contain some conception of time. Although Western Civilization is generally forward looking, there is a strong conservative tendency as well. As Whithrow points out, the Romans looked with suspicion on something that was a "novelty."

At the end of the book he reviews theories of progress and change, such as those advanced by Bury, Spengler and Toynbee. He also discusses the scientific theories of Leibniz, Newtown and Einstein and the various theories of time involved with each.

For a moderately sized book it is quite comprehensive. To take just one example, Whitrow provides an overview of the controversy surrounding New Testament scholar Oscar Cullman's theory of time in the Judeo-Christian world.

Great survey of the way Time is thought of in the West.......2002-11-10

This is a fascinating history of time and the way we measure it in the West. Whitrow covers just about every topic one would expect connected to our concepts of time beginning with the evidence of Prehistory and extending to contemporary physics and philosophy.

My favorite parts are those dealing with the creation of the calendar and the ways that were developed for dividing up the day in the Hellenistic world. I had always taken the names of the months and the length of days in each pretty much for granted, but Whitrow goes into detail about how the egos of the Roman Emperors forced a renumbering of the months so that Augustus could have his month on the calendar have as many days as any other. I had never realized that July was named for Julius and August for Augustus. Whitrow also covers the development and refinement of the calendar over the centuries, and why their was the need for the Gregorian calendar to replace the Julian, and the former's gradual acceptance by all the world.

There is also discussion of the problems of clocks, of the various types, and their development. And special kinds of clocks are covered as well, such as John Harrison's that was recounted in greater detail in Sobel's LONGITUDE.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in how the Western world has developed its ways of thinking about time and how to measure it. Since these concepts undergird virtually everything that happens in our culture, it deals with exceedingly fundamental concepts indeed.

An excellent overview on the history of time........1997-11-08

I had always been curious as to the origin of our calendar, our timing system etc. This book presents a very good introduction to this, and also to the changes in the perception and importance of time to different societies throughout history. It is a good introduction though, and not a book for academic research.

Captivating look at our zoo system!.......2002-01-08

Vicki Croke does an absolutely fabulous job of completely sucking into the zoo world. She does not take away the mystery and awe that the zoos now provide for us. She gives us a seemingly unbiased factual look at how zoos were formed, how they are becoming better for animals and people alike, and what they are moving towards. Anyone who has ever been interested in visiting zoos really need to read this book because it will completely change your zoo perspective as it has mine. Thank You Vicki for such a great book!!

A fascinating look at the concept of "captivity".......2001-05-16

I really enjoyed this book! If you have an interest in animals in general, especially wild animals we will likely only see in zoos or on TV, then this is a great read. Despite a somewhat weighty topic, the book flows well in an easy to read style, packed full of examples and anecdotes. The chapters on how zoos are progressing from the cages and bars of the past to the "natural habitat" format are extremely well presented. Also of particular interest were the sections on how animals react when confined, and how zoos are experimenting with changes in the environment to stimulate the animal's mental health, with mixed results. Overall, this is a great book, and the author has done an exceptional job at presenting the topic. It will change the way you think about zoos, and the animals that inhabit them. Buy the book if you can find it.

An interesting essay of zoos with many real-life anecdotes.......1998-08-19

As a frequent zoo goer, I was able to identify with the facts mentioned in this book from my past zoo experiences. The Modern Ark provides many stories from zoos all over the world (some of them might be located near you) and the animals they house. Enjoyable reading for those who care about the well being of animals in zoos, as well as those with a general interest in zoo animals.
