        Book Description

Scholars have produced a wide variety of theoretical work on contract law. This is the first book to compile it, to present it coherently, to evaluate it, and to supply numerous references to additional sources. The author also offers his own practical perspective that emphasizes contract law's richness and complexity and questions the utility of abstract unitary theories. The author argues that, notwithstanding contract law's complexity, it successfully facilitates the formation and enforcement of private arrangements and ensures a degree of fairness in the process of exchange. Each chapter presents a pair of largely contrasting theories to clarify the central issue of contract law and theory, to set forth the range of views, and to help identify a practical middle ground. Among the contract theories discussed and analyzed are promise, contextual, feminist, formal, mainstream, critical, economic, empirical, and relational. The book should interest legal theorists, practising lawyers, law students, and general readers who want to learn more about contract law and theory.

            Book Description

The book reviews recent advances in the application of molecular biology techniques to crop improvement. A range of agricultural and horticultural problems are approached including the genetic engineering of insect resistance, herbicide resistance and suppression of gene expression using anti-sense RNA. The book considers major advances in cereal transformation, particularly rice, and documents some of the uses of molecular biology in potato and other crop improvement. The molecular biology of seed protein genes and self-incompat- ibility genes are examined and the potential benefits of this data in the engineering of protein quality or male sterility, respectively, are considered. Recent developments in the molecular biology and control of flower colour and pigmentation are also presented. The book focusses on crop plants and applications of biotechnology and shows where the potential for crop improvement lies. This combination of material has not been gathered together before and will update biotechnologists and plant breeders alike.

                Book Description

By tackling the most central ideas in chemistry, Why Chemical Reactions Happen provides the reader with all the tools and concepts needed to think like a chemist. The text takes a unified approach to the subject, aiming to help the reader develop a real overview of chemical processes, by avoiding the traditional divisions of physical, inorganic and organic chemistry. To understand how chemical reactions happen we need to know about the bonding in molecules, how molecules interact, what determines whether an interaction is favourable or not, and what the outcome will be. Answering these questions requires an understanding of topics from quantum mechanics, through thermodynamics, to "curly arrows". In this book all of these topics are presented in a coherent and coordinated fashion, showing how each leads to a deeper understanding of chemical reactions.

                      Book Description

A monograph incorporating the general physical concepts that form the foundation of the phenomenon of giant resonances and a review of the study of nuclear structure at finite temperature. Material is divided into two main parts: the study of giant resonances based on the atomic nucleus ground state (zero temperature), and the study of the g-decay of giant resonances from compound (finite temperature) nuclei. Work at the forefront of research on the structure of hot nuclei is presented, providing experimentalists with an essential guide for uses of gamma ray detectors.

                      Book Description

The year is 2084 and the liberal party has a stranglehold

on Fairland. A limited nuclear exchange between Asia

and the North Americans in 2033 set both peoples back

to the Middle Ages. Conservatives, largely

annihilated in the Revolution of 2034, were either

prosecuted as enemies of the state or eliminated.

                      Thus rose the Liberal fairyland,

Fairland. Established within the borders of the US

and Canada, it was a country of ultimate caring,

fairness and equality. Fairland's citizens are cared

for with a firm but loving hand by the beneficent

dictator, Big Mama, who knows each of her dependents

by name. Big Mama loves each of her charges equally,

but--as John Winston is to discover--some are more

equal than others. 2084 is parody, but also biting

satire. As in the satire of Voltaire and Swift, 2084

bends outrageous plot and motley characters to the

cause of exposing the hypocrisy of the present and

recent past with a humor as irresistible as it is

acerbic. Read it and laugh...but not too much.

1 out of 5 stars The writing is almost worse than the message........2004-08-19

I find myself amazed that anyone could find this book "clever" or "biting" in the least. It's a hardly even a novel - it's basically a collection of rants thinly veiled under an even tone.

The only intriguing part related to the book, for me, is that some people really believe his charming "message:"
-Affirmative action is almost the same as kidnapping non-white men and women and forcing them to work at certain jobs.
-There's a vast liberal conspiracy to destroy heterosexual relationships and force as many people as possible into homosexuality.
-Rape and sexual harassment accusations *from women* are a feminist conspiracy: no woman ever really tells the truth about those things.
-Rape against men, however, does happen and it's a horrible thing, but liberals think it's insensitive to call the rapist on his actions.
-AIDS only affects homosexuals and drug users.
                      -Multiculturalism is disgusting.
                      -Non-traditional gender roles are disgusting.
                      -Non-heterosexuals are disgusting.
                      -Non-whites are disgusting.
-Rush Limbaugh is god-like in his wisdom, and feared by the left for his, well, god-like wisdom.
-If everyone saw things The Way They Really Were, they'd magically and instantly turn conservative.

All of these statements are affirmed proudly and without an ounce of cleverness in the book. I have no idea why it wasn't just published as one of the endless conservative rant books - it's not as if he has any skill as a novelist.

5 out of 5 stars JESUS, THAT BOOK IS FUNNY!.......2001-09-10

Hale has got something good going here! Ridiculous? Yes! Mean spirited? You bet! The libs deserve every jibe to their naked and tender backsides this razor witted satire can dish up--and it dishes up plenty! I can't wait for Hale's next one! Take that, commie pinkos!

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious And Thoughtprovoking.......2001-06-28

David Hale's "2084: The Year of the Liberal" is an uproariously entertaining political satire. Well-paced and scathingly accurate, Mr. Hale's no-holds-barred style of writing has a proverbial field day with the societal disease known as political correctness. "2084" will be immensely appealing to conservative readers; downright maddening to liberal audiences; and food-for-thought for moderate-thinking individuals. Kudos to Mr. Hale for knowing that there is an undeniable relationship between truth and humor; in other words, the more truthful you are when you satirize something, the funnier your writing will be.

4 out of 5 stars BELLY LAUGHS GALORE!.......2001-06-19

If you want a farce that takes a swipe at all things liberal, this is the tome for you. The PC among us will hate this book but then that's their loss. For the rest of us, it's about time Hale came along and blasted the PC crowd.

1 out of 5 stars Give Me George Orwell or Give Me Death.......2001-06-14

While Hale tries to manage a vulpine sequel to? parody of? Orwell's 1984, he succeeds only in tirading relentlessly about the injustices of the public's recollection of Ronald Reagan's presidency -- and this isn't necessarily the best scheme for a novel set in 2084, 100 years after Reagan's term. Perhaps if Hale had explained or shown why the 80's had had such a lasting effect or used more subtlty in setting up his argument, I would have believed him, but plot and subtlty are definitely secondary to the narrator's opinion that the media denigrated and continues to denigrate the "great" Reagan unfairly. Regardless of whether you love or hate the former chief of state, you'll tire by the tenth or eleventh rant debunking accusations against him.

5 out of 5 stars It was like learning my father's war experience first hand.......2007-07-27

My father served in the Southwest Pacific also. He very rarely spoke about what he experienced there. All I knew was he was in New Guinea and the Philippines. After going through his separation papers and old photos after he died, I learned he was in the 41st Division in the same places and at the same time as the author of this book. It was well written and described what the men of my father's and the author's generation had to go through. A true soldier's story from the "Greatest Generation".

4 out of 5 stars Very good combat memoir of the Southwest Pacific.......2005-01-12

This book is a brief, but solid memoir of a soldier who fought in New Guinea and the Phillipines written nearly fifty years after the end of the war. The battle descriptions are first rate and his prose is very readable. The author is honest in admitting when his memory of events is imperfect but the years have not dimmed much. The author comes across as a likeable guy who is rightfully proud of his contribution to the "Good War".

                      5 out of 5 stars Very useful.......2006-12-24

I've been reading and studying about the Korean War recently. I had bought this encyclopedia some months ago in anticipation of this. While I have read only a few entries in the encyclopedia, the ones I have read have all been very informative with good depth. As might be expected given the length of the book, there is a wide range of topics covered.

As to format, there is a very useful listing of all the topic entries at the front of the book, along with a plethora of plain but clear maps. I might mention though, that the map on p. xxviii, intended to be a map of the Inchon landings, is actually a reprint of the initial North Korean invasion map. Also, under the entry for "Orders of Battle", one is directed to Appendix I, which seems to be missing. However, in an undertaking as extensive as this, these anomolies are minor.

In sum, this book is a very important and useful addition to Korean War historiography. I'm certainly glad it exists and that I bought it!

Encyclopedia Of The Korean War: A Political, Social, And Military History is deftly edited by Spencer C. Tucker and presents the reader with a thorough, comprehensive, in-depth, and deeply researched compendium of knowledge over the Korean conflict often referred to as "The Forgotten War." Entries are listed in A to Z format; black-and-white photographs sparsely illustrate the detailed, matter-of fact text. Strongly recommended for school and community library military history collections, the Encyclopedia Of The Korean War is a superbly presented reference for looking up details concerning people, places, weapons, politics, military actions and much more about this pivotal Asian conflict.

An excellent insight into the heart of the sportsman and the South's transition to the 20th century. If you are a hunter, you will appreciate how Mr. Ruthledge brings the excitement of the hunt to the reader. If you are a Southerner, you will better understand the critical time when the South shook off the long-standing burdens of the Reconstruction and joined America's march into the 20th century. Today's reader may be shocked by the way that Mr. Ruthledge describes the interactions between whites and blacks during the early part of the 20th century. It is certainly politically incorrect by today's standards. But it does reveal a much deeper and respectful interaction between the races, despite the caste system of the day. All in all an excellent book about hunting in the South.
